[Q] Permission denied when rooting my glacier - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

K well I'm an overclocker/tweaker when it comes to computers but am new at phones.. Specifically androids os.. So be gentle.
I have tried rooting with adb and during the file push it said permission denied. Well I somehow got it to push the files.. Then when running the files on the phone through the terminal it then again says permission denied. I think I was running "rage"
Anyone got any help or helpful topics? I really wanna get my phoned rooted so I can really start moding it and install a new and better rom
Thank you

Search my posts.. I posted a link in a thread last night that work for people having problems.I would give you the link but I'm on my phone and can't figure out how to do it
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

Same problem it won't let me click search all posts by you...
Got it. Found the link. I'll try it as soon as I'm at my comp to format my card

Try the gfree method it can all be done on your phone. I typed up a simplified version of the stickied one in the development thread. Its really easy.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

K I tried another way.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021
That one... When I run the script it says
$ export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$su
# cd /sdcard/root
# sh root.sh
Inserting kernel module
insmod: init_module '/sdcard/root/wpx.ko' failed (Function not implemented)
Duplicating hboot
2048+0 records in
2048+0 records out
1048576 bytes transferred in 0.293 secs (3578757 bytes/sec)
Synchronizing
Powerdown and reboot into hboot to check if s=off
#
So it fails.. Boot to hboot and it says s-on still... Ideas? Retried a few times.. Settings are correct
If this don't work I'm gonna try the way gixer posted in another topic

Cannot root G2- Help?

Hello. I am encountering a problem when attempting to root my G2 as outlined in the wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik..._Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29_using_gfree_v0.5). I get an error message with this step:
Code:
# ./root_psn
Returns the error message:
Code:
# ./root_psn
./root_psn
cp: can't stat '/system/xbin/busybox': Not a directory
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: Not a directory
./root_psn: /system/xbin/busybox: not found
cp: not found
cp: not found
Unable to chmod /system/bin/su: No such file or directory
#
As a possible side note, something worked: I have ENG S-OFF but no root. Any idea what went wrong?
There is a topic in G2 development forum using visionary "and" gfree to root. Easiest way to root the G2. Dont even need a pc.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Except that Visionary doesn't work on my phone, curiously. I would have tried that already if it did. But thanks for the reply
Busybox isn't where it's supposed to be it looks like. The cp command is dependant on a working busybox binary, if the location is incorrect, or or it isn't executable, you'd get those errors.
Okay, thank you. I will make another attempt when I am back home.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
okay I tried to do it again and hit the same wall: same error. Pretty sure I pushed busybox to the right location. Is there anything I can do now since visionary doesn't appear to work (temproot) either?
I used Z4Mod to Temp root my G2 for OC purposes only...

Still getting "Permission denied" from terminal emulator/Titanium backup. My G2 REALLY does not want to be rooted it seems...
You need to change the permissions on those files chmod them too 755 i think. It should be outlined in the guide. Sorry i cant give you specific help

I am now getting 'mmap<>failed. Operation not permitted' on '$ adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter'
bump please - this problem is aggravating

Myt3G 1.2 Rooting

I am having issues trying to get my phone rooted.
I have followed tutorial on theunlockr.com. I have created my goldcard as indicated. But when I try to update the phone with the provided sappimg.zip it gives me wrong model ID. It tells me that try creating the goldcard again, and it doesn't work.
I have even tried to do the clockworkmod tutorial with superoneclick method and that does not work. Can someone assist me in getting this to work? What I'm looking for someone to do is to spend some time helping me. Is there a different way to get this working?
I have also tried 3 different goldcard's.
OS version 2.2.1
Does have 3.5mm Jack
I realize that I need to get that sappimg to install before I get that SPL and radio changed.
Have you tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10824837#post10824837
?

Try rooting with gingerbreak. Or root manually using gingerbreak, rageagainstthecage, or killinginthenameof. Try with the gingerbreak apk first, and if that fails cone back and ill give you different instructions
I have tried gingerbreak on the phone manually installing. It reboots, but no superuser on phone.
I have tried superoneclick v.1.7 and 1.9.5 with rageagainstthecage and gingerbreak. It says it roots but I get the sending "su" command and fails. It states that device is full error too as you see in the post.
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A Ship S-ON G.
I have created a goldcard right but when I try to install the SAPPIMG.zip it tells me incorrect MODEL ID. From where I read you have to get the ENG SPL on this first. I also read that 2.2.1 update has locked to bootloader.

Gingerbreak the app or the binary the app uses to root?
If the app doesn't work then I would try going to c-skills.blogsot.com and downloading gingerbreak or killinginthenameof and rooting manually (run exploit. Push su, install superuser)
Also it could be possible that it ran out of space for the superuser app. Try installing it from the market and see if it works
Also, the website is just from memory, could be wrong. If it is then go googleing
I tried gingerbreak the apk, and I have tried the gingerbreak from the superoneclick method. I will try this other one. Thanks for the help.

Try doing it manually (from adb shell or a terminal emulator on the phone)
Run the exploit. Remount system rw. Push su. Install superuser from market
going to need some help on that one. If you dont mind.

Sure. Just tell me what part you need help with
Two ideas.
Use superoneclick to get shell root then push su via adb. Then install superuser from the market.
Or downgrade to 1.6 and root via universal androot
That sounds like an easier way. I will try yours. I'll have to look around how to downgrade to is that cupcake or donut?
Is there someone that is willing to IRC chat with me to get it done? Im running into the issue that it says that device is full.
Is there anyone willing to assist me? Or me to send the phone to to root with AMON-RA Im willing to paypal $20 to do it. This phone is a piece of junk without it being rooted. I dont have money for a new phone at this time. I will in the next couple months.

I guess as you've already achieved root / S-OFF etc, you find the command to S-ON there will probably be a command switch to S-OFF. Failing that, when I S-OFF'd, it produced a backup.

Yes i do currently have S-OFF but need S-ON again because the phone is beeing returned for repairs..
Might be able to use rage, for temp root.

Re reading your post, i'm not sure psneuter is root for 1.34 i used it to get temp root on 1.72 downgraded and used rage for root on 1.34. Look in android development for the guide to downgrade and root (no links on app) start at after the 1.34 flash bit. gfree is the app that s-off so its likely gfree can also s-on. Running gfree with no switches should give a manual page, or just search gfree switches. (I'm not responsible for bricks etc!!)
Edit, rage gives temp root on 1.34

Okay so i've managed to get root on the device ! Finally..
However i still have trouble running gfree.. i've tried a few methods but it gives me the same output
Code:
# /data/local/gfree -r /sdcard/part7backup-1298979588.bin
/data/local/gfree -r /sdcard/part7backup-1298979588.bin
/data/local/gfree: 1: Syntax error: ")" unexpected
# /data/local/gfree -s on -c HTC__Y13
/data/local/gfree -s on -c HTC__Y13
/data/local/gfree: 1: Syntax error: ")" unexpected
I "think" i managed to get root.. when i write 'adb shell' i dont go directly to a root shell, but only '$'. Writing 'su' phone ask me if i want to let permission to give a root shell which i accept whereafter i get the '#'
EDIT: Just tried it again using a newer version of gfree.. (The one i used above was 0.4) Same problems with gfree 0.7. But i have an idea that it can be because of this:
When i download the file 'gfree_07.zip' am i supposed to just rename this file to only 'gfree' without any extension and then with push it to phone with 'adb push gfree /data/local/' ? OR am i supposed to open the zip file and extract the gfree file within it and then push that file to the phone ?
Yes, you must unzip gfree_0x.zip file and move the extracted gfree binary file to your phone as instructions (and this thread) states. Good luck!!!
How I wish we wouldn't need to do this kind of trickery just to use our own phones as we wish...
Let us know if it eork. Ive been having the same trouble

Apparently it works too, this guy has that build number: http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-...downgrade-root-2-43-661-1-up.html#post2995693
Finally we have a way to downgrade from 2.50 !!!
Hi All !
I tested it and it worked, so here are the things you need:
Download the downgrade.zip
An SD card with the 1.32 PD89IMG.zip
Connect your phone in Charge Only mode with USB Debugging enabled.
Run these commands with enter after every line:
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start F0000000 -end FFFFFFFF
If you success you will see this message:
Potential exploit area found at address (maybe fbb6b600:1a00 or something else).
Exploiting device...
Then run the following:
adb shell (you will have to get the "#"
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.31.405.3
adb reboot bootloader
Run the ROM setup and you will done
This method is the same as CubZ
im all over both threads, please post offsets at which the exploit was found on your device.
so as we can narrow down the searches to make a quick one click method.

CONFIRMED on Telus Desire HD running 2.43!
Follow the instructions on this link here:
http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3867.0
I just completed Step 7. Step 8 will have to wait until I get home, since I don't have administrative access on this computer, so I can't run the batch to turn off Radio S-Off yet. BUT my phone is rooted now. Now running on Android 2.2 build 1.32.405
Also, just perm rooted using Visionary+. Just tested it with adb shell and got the magical #.
Thank you JSL from Dripther.com!
Totally works! No problems at all on my unbranded DHD.

It found an exploit area at fbb7f800:1800 on my Telus-branded Desire HD.
EDIT: I've tried the process about 4 or 5 times, and everything goes fine until it boots into the bootloader. Whenever it gets to that stage, nothing appears to get flashed and my phone goes right back to the way it was. Any particular reason for that?
Finaly, i give it a try.

I had the exact same luck with that. I've used this exact same SD card with my old HTC Hero, so it's not the card. Could it just be something as simple as me having a corrupted download of PD98IMG.zip? I'll check the MD5 and report back.
This works for 2.50xxx. Just did it. If it fails 1st time, unplug and try again.
