4g on CM7 vs Sense? - EVO 4G General

Hey guys,
I was hoping I could tap your brains for some EVO knowledge. I've been rocking CM7 for awhile now and love it. The only "problem" seems to be how it handles the 4g connection. It seems like it will either use 4g OR 3g and if I turn on 4g but there is no coverage (or it drops out) it does not immediately default to 3g. I know on Sense roms that when 4g stopped, 3g kicked in. Has anybody else seen this?

I find 4G on CM7 more unstable than on sense when I use it. It's hard to keep a connection and seems to take longer to connect. One of the reasons I recently switched back to a sense rom.

I've actually experienced the opposite.
I could barely use 4G on any Sense ROM. It would spike my CPU at 100% (even after full wipes), it would disconnect and take forever to reconnect.
Since moving to CM7, 4G connections really quick and usually stays established with no problems.

i use cm7 and when i lose 4g my 3g automatically kicks in and my device uses that. i recommend updating to cm 7.0.3.1 they use the updated google 4g codes

Where are you reading that they updated 4G codes? Their changelog only says they changed a notifications bug and also a security hole.

They updated the code but I just realized it's only on the nightly. There is a problem with the nightly where mms wont download, so if mms is important, don't flash it yet

That's going to be in 7.1.
I've found WiMax on CM7 to be about the same as on Sense, which is to say it's flaky on both. I don't think it's really the phone or the ROM's fault. Sprint/Clear just hasn't built a strong enough 4G network to provide a good experience. Any time it constantly has to switch back and forth (which is going to be the case with the high frequencies they're running at and insufficient power or tower density to compensate), the experience won't be very satisfying.

I too am interested in this topic

I was using cm7 for a little bit...4g in chicago was slowwww to connect if it did at all...i just switched to virus's gingersense b3 and it is awesome...waiting on his kingdome port with sense 3.0 sometime tonight

i think it's pretty expected that two unpaid coders won't make as good of a code than a multi-billion/million/lotta$$$ corp can. amazing work either way though. that said, try one of the cm7.1 nightlys (any #60+ nightly, not counting stable 7.0.3, that's still 2.3.3) as the new android 2.3.4 has google's own 4g wimax coding in it.

Waiting to download the Kingdom ROM from XxXViRuSXxX. Apparently 4g works great and it has the new Sense 3.0, which is beautiful! It won't be bug free but I plan on jumping in and helping out and soon it will be a daily driver

What is cm7?

Htc hd2 custom srock rom for 4g tmo network?

Ive been searching for a while but didnt find this topic.
I like using android cause its a better os than winmo, and cause it connects to tmo 4g at 2800 kbps unlike the stock winmo rom that tmo pda engineers said is software capped for 3g speeds of 640kbps.
Is there a customized stock winmo rom thats avalible that has ability to see and connect to the 4g "H" network? Reason i ask is i do
still have use for winmo on hd2 for work purposes and when i do need to have it on for work, would like to browse web as fast as i do when android is on.
Thanks

I don't think it's the software, I'm pretty sure it's the hardware, the HD2 can't handle the speeds, it wasn't designed for it. I think TMO might have been talking about the new G2 that CAN handle the newer speeds.
It can handle up to atleast 3000kbps. but the engineers said its software capped at 3g, and confirmed that the android ports can reach higher 4g speeds (he said his did the same). its something in the android roms that unlocks it to work to atleast 2700kbps from the tests ive done with winmo and android (winmo full bar "3g" 700kbps android full bar "H" 2750kbps from mobilespeedtest.com). being in boston the 4g is live, and the 2 speed tests and completely different. I asked if there was going to be an update from htc to unlock windows mobil to use 4g as it can handle it, probably not as fast as g2, but faster than standard 3g. He said probably not so they can sell their g2, and suggested for the faster net to continue using the android port.
So figured id look here, and see if its been done yet, or that if its now a known issue, if the dev's can make something to unlock it.
That is odd. I used Elegancia and now ChuckyDroid and both of those show an H as my connection. With Elegancia I would easily get 2400 around town. Never tried with ChuckyDroid as I boot directly to Android now.
You should not be capped. Not with any of these ROMS here. Many have posted figures as high as 3000+ on this board.
Yeah im using the stock 3.15 tmo rom, and the darkstone desire hd rom. I try to stick to factory rom as i find it easier to navigate, and like the htc clock/weather widget (nice seeing if its raining ect before i leave the office)
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
On Android on my HD2, I topped out (using speedtest.net) at ~560 kB/sec (bytes) download, and 160 kB/sec upload. I guess that is somewhere around 4.5-5 mb/sec rate?
I'm in nyc metro area

You need to try the energy roms they allow you to connect to H. There are several in the thread, some offering a very factory feel but better and more efficient. (They also retain the clock widget and few cool variants of it)

I have always got the H symbol
with all the stock ROMS. And with speed tests teathered I get over 4Mbps. so It's not capped by software. BTW, I get those speeds on mobile speed tests too.
Yeah that information about the software being capped is complete crap. I use the stock 2.15 ROM and I consistently get 3Mbps AT LEAST on H and most of the time around 4Mbps while im out and about. For whatever reason it sounds like your Android port is "faster", but it also sounds like you use WinMo at work, and Android in other places, which would also definately account for your difference in speeds. The hardware itself is also most definately capable of utilizing "4G"(as I was recently just made aware).
Actually the test was taken at same spot, in parkinglot with full bars. Start in android get 2750 with "h" reboot to windows, same spot full bar "3g" and get 650. Wont connect to "h" in windows

check this
there is a spot in the data settings where you can turn HSPA on and off make sure yours isn't turned off. I don't have the stock rom so I am not sure where it is on there any more. I do know that it isn't turned on by default on some phones for some reason though.
Im in the Bronx,New York City area. Back in march when the phone 1st on the market . I was able to get speeds of 2.5-3.0mb/sec On H . Now I can only get 1.4 or so . It's fast enough that I can stream netflix movies thru my H connection to my Laptop when I'm on the go say on the Bus uptown. Right I'm using the energy 21680 rom with 2.14.50.04 radio.
Just because you don't see H doesn't mean your not connected to the H network. Many roms, including the stock roms, have the H symbol hidden. Many customized roms usually show H. Don't worry about seeing H or not.
In regards to the speed in android vs. win mobile, my hd2 gets slower speeds in windows mobile and much faster speeds in android in many areas. I download at around 1000/300kbps but on android i would get 3000/500kbps. I would imagine its because android uses ppp or rmnet connection methods vs. whatever windows mobile uses. (I think its ppp and rmnet at least. don't ask me what they do, not too sure)

please explain to me how ive hit 5.5mbps on my stock rom? The stock HD2 software/hardware is fully capable of utilizing HSPA 7.2 though you'll likely never see 7.2 mbps in real world usage due to network congestion and TCP/IP overhead. like others have said on here, tmobile hides the "H" on their stock rom. why? ive no clue, maybe to not confuse the hell out of your joe blow customer who knows what 3G is but hasnt a clue what the H means
Out of curiosity though, does anyone know what needs to be changed in a stock rom to make it display the H? im assuming its a registry mod, or a replacement icon library file which contains the H icon

That is very true. Using the stock notification icons, I could only see [3G], but using a custom set with the stock ROM(or any ROM for that matter), I switch between [H] and [3G]. Thanks for pointing that out!

Curious if you could link to this custom icon set that can be installed on the stock rom?
I do not remember where I got it from exactly, or who made it, but I do know that there are a plethora of them available in the "HD2 Themes and Apps" sub forum of the LEO section here at XDA. Heres what my homescreen looks like now with the custom icons:

Please don't use all CAPS, it is considered shouting.
Not to be too obvious, but have you purchased a data plan from T-Mobile? If so, they can assist far better than we can.
Your HD2 will not connect to "4G"....
You may be getting confused with HSDPA which over here sometimes gets called "3.5G"

4G on load craps out

seems like the entire time on 2.2, a hard load on 4g connection causes the radio to cease thoroughput..
just makes me mad because it makes it hard to download my huge porn files using the network, and have to resort to slower 3g.
**Using the Sprint hotspot app. But Happens even using 4g on the phone, not tethering.
If I recall, I do not remember this happening on 2.1 and certainly not on my Evo 4g just for comparison.
I will miss 2.2, but I will have to nand then odin back to 2.1 next night and check this.

[Q] RoyalMiui ROM - Wifi calling

I flashed the miui rom which I love by the way. It's so clean. Even with the battery drain I can't get myself to go back to my previous CM7 final. So this is my question, what's up with the wifi calling feature? Maybe I'm just missing something. Service is crap in my house so I use wifi calling quite a bit. Please help!!!!
Thanks.
anyone know anything about this? I live in a rural area and am lucky to even get a signal. I loved this feature when I got my mytouch 4g. Miui is great and I can live with out this feature on it, but it would nice if it could be added.
Thanx ppl
There is no wifi calling with that rom it doesn't work.

It may not always show H.. but still has the same speeds.

Battery life seems imoroved as well....but i am using "powersave" governor and underclock (MIN368/MAX1068)....lasts 25% longer
I'm kinda new to all this so i might be wrong. I've been having this same issue before i even rooted my phone. I'm using cm7 rc 4 right now and having the same in and out of 3g/4g problem. When i was on stock i called tmobile's android department to complain about this cuz when the 3g and h kept going in and out i couldn't use internet at all. They told me to switch to 3g only for awhile instead of keeping the data setting at auto. I'm still looking for a solution to this cuz right now on 4g my speed is less than 2mbps. i have the speed test to prove. cm7 doesn't have an option to set to 3g only! so i'm pretty much f*ed unless someone has a solution. P.S. i'm not throttled ive use 1.5 gb this month.

cm7 does have 3G only option....
You must add the status bar widget to access it
are u sure cm7 rc4 has access to it? or are you talking about a different build? And I don't understand what you mean by status bar widget. Are you talking about the power control widget that comes with cm7?
Yeah..i mean notification power widget
Menu >> settings >> cyanogenmod settings >> interface >> notification power widget >> widget buttons >>toggle 2g/3g
After adding this you must scroll down to "network modes" and select one of the "3G only" modes

CM9 4g connectivity?

My 4g usually has an okay time staying connected, where I am setting. I am using cm9 a3, and when it does connect it never lasts long. Doesn't matter if the phone is setting still, but the connection drops all the time... Anyone else?

I was having that issue with the mobile hotspot. It seems that the problem sorted itself out when I rebooted the phone.
Hmm, haven't used my hotspot in ages, and have rebooted a few times today...
Somewhere in the forums i read someone's suggestion that perhaps the number of bars showing could be better calibrated with the signal. That popped out at me because on CM9 I've never had many, if any bars on either 4 or 3g...been on EL30 modem for awhile and get great bars on CleanGB, as well as CM7. That being said, it did SEEM to me as well that connectivity overall on CM9 is more in and out too, especially with 4g. Don't really have any answer here, but I hear ya.

Are you able to use the mobile hotspot on 4g in CM9?! Soon as I turn on the native hotspotc 4g cuts out, same as with CM7. Third party tether app worked for me in CM7 to use 4g, but not in CM9. Really a bummer because thats one of the main reasons I'm not running CM9 daily now. Tethering at 3g is just too slow for me.

Well I know I am not in the best signal area, but I can usually get a connection and hold it for awhile. It seems to go to idle and shortly disconnect afterwords.

Could be...but after trying it out on alpha3, I'm pretty sure I was connected on 4g. Unscientific, but I was able to watch netflix brilliantly on my Google tv. At my desk at work I get a decent 4g signal, but next to no 3g signal (3g is effectively unusable) i was able to tether to the 4g and get decent speeds from it.

Seems to be even getting worse, I am lucky if 4g will connect at all...
Actually, it won't connect at all, not even outside... wonder what is wrong...
I'm using the A3 as well & I guess I'm the lucky one because I'm not having all that many connectivity issues with it (yet).
The alpha tag says it all when it comes to anything not working quite right do your part and report it in the bug tracker.
The Epic CM9 guys are on the ball with there **** if they can reproduce it (assuming they don't already know about it) they should be able to fix it.
