Does the SGS II have NFC (Near Field Communications) Support?
Answer:
P-Eazy said:
I have an email from Samsung claiming that no models worldwide will support NFC, I have posted it earlier in this forum. Samsung Korea have also confirmed that NFC capabilities will be included in new uSIM or MMC technology, it has therefore been left out of their phone models.
The extra thickness of the SGS2 in Korea has nothing to do with NFC, they have an extra chip/antenna on board to connect to high speed internet services.

Why doesn't my phone show all 1GB of RAM?
Answer:
MrYiff said:
The SGS2 does have 1GB of RAM however some is reserved for use by the GPU and so doesn't show up in any task manager.
For example my phone has been running for almost 24hrs with various applications and games being used and is currently showing as 165MB RAM in use and 528MB free.

It is the same as your screen unlock password. So if you use a text password, just enter it here. Similarly, if you use a numerical "PIN" to unlock the screen, just enter it on the upper row of numerical keys. If you use a pattern lock you will not see this screen.

OMG WTF I was conned. Where's my 16 GB??? I WANT IT NAO!

Your device uses 500 MB of space for the actual system software, plus around 2GB for your applications and their data storage. There are other partitions used for other system functions, and these take up some of the remaining space.

what is the biggest microsd card i can put in this thing. What do the 'classes' mean? which class is recommended?
Answer:
Beards said:
32GB
The classes refer to the speed the card can read & write date.
The greater the class the greater the speed.
Classes start at 2, then 4, 6, 8 & 10.
However not all manufacturers class rating is equal in speed.
i.e. A Sandisk Class 2 is greater in speed to a Kingston Class 4.
My favorite card is the Sandisk 32GB Class 4.

The Samsung App 'MiniDiary'.
This is very similar to the version Samsung put on the SGS.
Whilst it looks great it does have one major flaw..... You can not save the cards you add to the diary.
As such a fresh factory reset deletes all MiniDiary notes and photo's.
Question therefore reads ~ Has anyone found or can think of a way to recover the cards saved using MiniDiary?
If so it would be good to add this to the Topic here.

You could use something like titanium backup - or if you don't like that, you can just use something like root explorer to copy out it's data directory. Both requires root though, and I can't see a way around that...
The idea behind a diary app without internet syncing is terrible though, although I don't know of any that actually do sync...
EDIT: If you go into a diary entry, you can publish that one entry to facebook, or send as an email.. but yeah, hardly a backup.

Yeah, thanks Ryan. I did think Titanium and rooting would probably have to be the only option.
It was a long-shot to hope there could be a better way of syncing the data.
As you say, it is inexcusable in that Samsung provided a Diary App that you could not sync or backup.... They did it on the SGS and I complained to them then. Obviously no one listens or thinks deeper than the surface of using this App.

Would z4root work with the SGS II?

z4root will not work - only known method of rooting is flashing a different kernel. Hopefully someone finds an exploit...
As far as diary apps, there doesn't seem to be any internet syncing diary apps in general. So maybe nobody has thought of syncing with a blog or something yet... weird.
Maybe I should make a diary app that syncs back and forth to google docs or something, haha.

There is Journal - Orange Diary which has Import/Export to Google Docs and Backup as well.
It also allows you to add photo's similar to MiniDiary but with Journal you can add as many photo's as you want, plus audio notes as well.
However, it doesn't have the same facility as MiniDiary to link your photo's directly to a map which is a boom, plus I rather like the eye-candy of MiniDiary.
You make a Diary app Ryan that does all this and I'll pay.

Host mode works great. To further enhance this, there is now a tweak on his forum to allow you to replace the network operators name with the current profile. Clicking on this will launch PA Host.
QUESTION:
Have you had to set "use broker" for alarms to get the email notification to work. Without this option set, i only get the notification when i wake up the device. I'm guessing its due to using a custom rom (pandora 1.3). Using the broker option does solve the issue.

yes. Host mode is used when you do not have the today screen active - ie when running manila. Host mode will be enabled by default on the HD2 and an icon will appear in the top bar. This can be hidden and a shortcut used to open phonealarm if you prefer.
Its a great app with many options including data counter, call costs, automatic profile changes etc etc

Thanks, one more: will it work INSTEAD OF the WM alarms function or will it have it's own handler?

I wasn't dissing the HD2, it was just a genuine question as to why everything costs so much on windows phones as I don't understand? If one platform can give so much for free, or very cheap why not another? Is it people trying to cash in, or is it down to something like the costs to develop the programs?

my guess: iphone apps are an hipe now so there are a lot more ppl downloading apps from apple store rather then wm apps, so developers can make more money by quantity rather than price...
In addition apple store cuts down a lot advertising costs as all iphone apps are in one single place, so developer does not need an extra effort (read: money) to advertise his app on too many websites/forums/etc)

It is totally customisable. For instance you can select whether you want phonealarm to control email, sms, mms, im, missed calls etc notifcations or leave it to WM. Also it gives you the ability to set repeat alarms, again completely customisable for each alert. The alarm function is not tied to WM and therefore resolves many issues that others have faced.
There is a trial that can be downloaded - fully working for 14 days. Suggest you give it a test drive. It will take some time to become familiar with the many options. There are skins that can be used to make it look more flash - all the info is on the forum. The support from Bruce is excellent. I had an issue this morning with the latest beta and within 1 hour i had a fix for it!.

I present to you a FAQ for newcomers or the generally uninformed to find quick answers.
General
Q: What is a ROM?
A: A ROM is a complete system image of the Android operating system. For much more detailed info, read here.
Q: How do I install a ROM?
A: ROMs can be flashed once you have rooted your phone and flashed a custom recovery image. After that, you can apply a rom zip via the recovery menu. Detailed info here.
Q: Where can I find more info about ROMs?
A: In the two links above.
Q: What is Apps2SD and how do I use it?
A:Apps2SD is a script that will do exactly as it implies so you are no longer limited to your phone's internal storage. First you must be running a custom ROM that supports it and secondly you need to format your SD card as FAT+ext2. Once that requirement is met, the rest will be automatic. Alternative you could install a2sd on stock rom manually if you wanted to for whatever reason. Warning: Formatting your SD card will erase ALL of the data on it. If you want to keep it, make a backup.
Q: All the Market downloads are stalling. How can I fix this?
A: Sign into Gtalk. The two are closely related even though you'd never guess. For an in-depth discussion head over to this thread.
Q: How do I sign my zip or apk?
A: First you must have java installed on whatever OS you're running. Windows users download the Win-sign.zip attachment. Linux users download Linux-sign.zip attachment.
HTC Hero Specific
Q: How do I root my Sprint CDMA Hero?
A: You've got a few options concerning this. There's the auto-root, flashrec method, and asroot2 method.
Q: How can I remove pre-installed apps?
A: Head on over to How remove apps thread for detailed instructions.
Q: How can I get rid of ringtones and notifications I've downloading from showing up in the Music app and use them without downloading a Market app?
A: Create a folder in the root of your SD card called "media" and a folder called "audio" inside that one. Inside the "audio" folder, create a "notifications", "ringtones", or "alarms" depending on your needs and place the files in the desired folder. Example: media>audio>ringtones>custom-ringtone.mp3
Q: How can I tether my Hero to my PC?
A: You've got several options here. There's Wifi Tether, EasyTether, PDAnet, or without any app! You can read up respectively on each of the apps listed about to learn more about which might be best for you. Now, here's how you can tether without any of that stuff.
Step 1: Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable and make sure all other forms of internet are disconnected.
Step 2: Install HTC Sync.
Step 3: On your phone go to Settings>Wireless controls and enable Mobile networking sharing. Your PC will try to recognize your phone and install proper drivers and will probably fail. So do it manually using the drivers from HTC Sync located in the directory you installed it. PC should be recognizing your phone now if done properly.
Step 3: Within the Wireless controls menu go into Mobile network settings and change Mode of operation to 1x only.
Step 4: Go back one menu to the Wireless controls and turn off the Mobile network. Now, turn Mobile network back on and enable Mobile network sharing as quickly as possible. This may take a couple of tries. If you did this fast enough you'll get a message saying HTC sync is disable but you won't get Error 67.
Step 5: Change your Mode of Operation back to Hybrid and enjoy.
Leave a suggestion if there's something you think should be added.
Me likes.
Though I think that this would work best as a Wiki so that other informed users can add to it as things come up and we dont have to rely on just one user/dev to maintain it.
Thanks for taking the initiative on this, I am getting quite tired of all the useless threads and continuous thread hijacking over issues that have already been covered 20 times. I dont have all day to read through all the BS that has been filling up the threads lately.
Almost 200 views and no suggestions?
I don't know if this is up you guys' alley, but if any Cricket folks could put together a step-by-step on how to flash to Cricket, especially how to flash with sms/data working, that would be so helpful.
Something else that I can't find good and thorough instructions for is the Cricket broadband workaround, where (if I understand correctly), you use your Cricket USB Broadband modem for all data on the Hero via proxying into it. All I really find on the latter is vague directions to use Anycut/Bettercut and no details about what to do in either program or how to input proxy settings. The most detailed guide I was able to find seems to actually be for a different model phone, since the instructions either only relate to WM or a GSM Hero.
I am trying to figure this out, and if I do before anyone else straightens it out, I'll write something up. I know how annoying it is to get the same questions over and over in these forums. (I've tried my best to help out the Axim x51v community at HTCGeeks with these kinds of things.)
At any rate, it would be awesome to see some more Cricket Hero chatter, even if it isn't revelations, on this thread. I know we're out there lurking, appearing to be Sprinties.

i think this is because (almost) EVERYONE that owns a mac also owns a iphone...annnd a ipod....and a macbook....and a ipad....and don't need to develop android software because they have something with a shiny apple on it.
nothing against you, Negrito but most people (that i know...personally) who use macs are completely nuts for apple. hardcore apple fanboys.
my "friend" won't even hold my hero, i think he thinks it will convert him...and he knows that i know this...
So with the emulator leak we have new things to look at
Namely:
- downloading maps
- Applications + settings and SMS are now able to be backed up on CLOUD (http://clip2net.com/s/29yZl)
- PIN for app purchases on store
- upgraded camera UI
- OneNote separated from Office - probably something like OneNote MX?
- IE10 has again "Find on page" option!
- Data Sense application - to measure data usage (WiFi, cellular)
- Search page is now greatly enhanced with News, In Theatres, ... (Personalized suggestions - requires Hotmail account signed in, but that doesn't work.)
- Multiple photos selection (http://clip2net.com/s/29z2y)
- More settings in Ease of access (maybe they were just US specific before that?) - text size, high contrast mode, screen magnifier throughout the system
- Ability to remap the STOP button in IE to something else - namely favs, stop/refresh or tabs
- Partial blocking of cookies (tracking cookies?)
- Lockscreen to show Bing today picture rather your own one (NEAT!)
- LOCKSCREEN TO SUPPORT CUSTOM APPLICATIONS!
- Zune Music is now called Xbox Music including reporting "what are you playing now" to Xbox
- SafeSearch settings for Bing search
- More detailed phone storage informations including buttons to move photos or music to SD card
- Native screenshots (winkey + camkey) -- thanks to wpcentral!
The list shall be updated!

Are there any APIs that can filter calls or SMS?
Windows Phone 8 is going to be a killer OS!! I seriously can't wait to upgrade from my aging DVP!

I highly doubt that, didn't see any api
Here's my list, what I have found so far in the .chm file:
SmsInterceptor for capturing SMS messages
SpeechSynthesizer, SpeechRecognition - sounds good
Battery class for accessing remaining power, finally!
LockScreenWallpaper - API for changing current lockscreen
VoipPhoneCall - if you want to create your own Skype clone
SaveAppointmentTask - to save appointments into calendar
App to App and App to Device Bluetooth communication
FlipTileData, CycleTileData, IconicTileData - new types of Tiles, including that 3 size tile
Second post GREATLY updated with A LOT of images. Click on them for full resolution (WVGA).
If anybody would be interested in some kind of video walkthrough - I suppose it could happen during the weekend as well?
Also it seems to run with only 256MB RAM without a page file, so hopefully we will be seeing devices like the Nokia Lumia 610 at a low price.
anything related to wifi? I really want an option to not lose wife when phone is locked
Thanks
i still don't see myself pulling away from android. i really want to though...
I want to see the lock screen in action, and I want to see if they made any changes to the toast notifications.

i was wondering...
is VOIPcall based on skype? or a standard like SIP?
i work in a telephony company, and i'm interested in this functionnality: i already have lot of ideas of how to use voipcall in my desktop software (switching from desktop softphone to WP8 voip automatically, adding mobility to my desktop softwares, etc...)

There are some registry values relating to SIP, and it has already been announced that it supports skype.

i hope it will not be skype only.
some registry doesn't mean "it will be ok for SIP", but it's a good start
What about multitasking?
Is the multitasking the same as Windows Phone 7.5? Is the number of "freezed" apps increased? Are there any changes?
The only thing we know from MS is that VoIP apps and GPS apps will be able to run in background (or get much less limits compared to regular apps) - so apps like GPS navigation or Skype will run in background as you'd expect them.
Wanted to root my Nook since I got it a month or two ago, in part to replace the terrible standard reader, in part for custom dictionaries. Finally managed to find a SD -> MicroSD adapter here in India (where I'm travelling and have got as far as making a full backup using the steps here upto no.8 ( URL nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting/Manual ) but as the rooting procedure on there seems very basic with no included apps I thought I'd have a look at what was possible.
I think the Minimal install looks to be most suitable for me, but from the reading I've done it seems this and other Nooter Project procedures I can find only support firmware 1.0.0/1 or 1.1.0 and my device is running 1.2.1
Is there any process for rooting this device? Does the process from the page I used to backup the device work whatever the firmware version? If so I could always sideload ADW Launcher along with reader apps and dictionaries. But I don't really want to be risking things now knowing if they will break the device, even with a backup on my computer...
This is probably the easiest way with firmware 1.1.5 and up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35267728 Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. As it happens just found exactly the same thread (although slightly different URL as think yours points specifically to first post) from Googling and rereading a guide on another site and the following a link from there back here. Will try and find the time to try it tomorrow.... Although think might be going on a 2-3 day trip tomorrow now so might have to wait a little before poking at it again.
OK have the device rooted. My eyes are too blury to focus on anything right now though, so not going to have a proper play just yet!! One quick question though.
How do I sideload application on this device? Just copy them into /system/app and they will work? Or drop them in a folder and click on the .apk files to get them to install, like I had to do on my Sony PRS-T1?
Also had a strange moment. Had done nothing but have a quick look around, 95% sure I hadn't actually changed any setting, and it wouldn't let me go One Level Up from the SDCard., so thought I was stuck not being able to browse anything! Running a Restore factory Settings from the main Settings Manager cured this though. No idea what it thinks I clicked to make this happen though...
EDIT: yep, this is easily re-creatable! :
Root device.
Click Home -> Re-Launch (click OK on page which pops on first open to close)
Click One Level Up
Click Settings Cog
Click on any setting (Well I've tested the first two, Start Mode and Work Mode)
Click Cancel (to not change anything)
Click Back
Click Home.
You will now be at the SDCard and not able to navigate up a level until you Reset Setting to Default Values!!!
This is really rather annoying! Especially as I don't seem to be able to make Root a Favourite!!

That still doesn't answer my question of whether I can just drop them into /system/app or if I have to transfer them and then select them with a file manager such as Total Commander (like I had to on the PRST1) to install them.

By posting that I assume you're saying that the packaged file manager packaged with the root install is known to be very buggy and wont be fixed. Correct? If so I'll try and get Total Commander on it...
Whatever. InstallIng all apk files by moving them? Rooting & modding isn't for everyone.
Obviously neither are manners!
There is nothing "broken" with the file manager in the Relaunch launcher app. With Relaunch go into settings>advanced settings>general settings and you can set up the file manager as far as start directory and whether you can browse up from there, just copy over most apk's to the SD card and click on them to install, some apps, such as keyboards don't work very well unless they are installed as system apps.

Thank you very much. That is as I expected. Although a quick bit of searching on the very poor internet I temporarily get out here in India also showed I can install straight from ADB so I might take a look into that. Although I only got it to work once on my PRST1 before it died (it was on its last legs and the internal ROM was starting to corrupt) and all the guides I could find at the time were very out of date and not for the current version...

I would call the fact it stops you from being able to go up a level without you actually changing a single setting, only viewing them, as broken behaviour personally! See my steps above and try following them if you don't believe me.

Where was anything rude in that post? Pointing out that you didn't actually answer anything, which you didn't. In fact you only very tersely posted links without even including any text as to what they were, which on further investigation it becomes apparent neither are even directly related to what I asked! Learn to read properly and reply in a reasonable manner. It's really not that hard a skill to master!
QED.

It doesn't stop you, that's the default behavior, as I posted above, you can easily modify the file browser behavior to do pretty much anything that you want or need. So it's certainly not broken. I personally think that Relaunch is the perfect launcher for e-ink devices, extremely light weight and fast without the normal graphical interface that's unnecessary on the nook. To each their own.

But I CAN go up a level before looking at the settings options. It's only after viewing some, with no changes made, this option disappears! How does that make it the default option.
Anyway. I'll try resetting it from within the options and see if this makes it keep the setting correctly... Other than that little bug it did seem pretty sweet for an eReader!

You have issues as this sort of personal attack is against the forum rules.
I want to disable the stupid Windows feedback app, which is always popping up when I press the <on/off> and <down volume> keys by accident.
Any suggestions?
As far as I know, that's not possible

Thanks Teddy. I think I am going to have to find a way to root the phone. There's lots about it I like (e.g. the update to the camera app that means I now have a panorama option that actually works quite well), and lots about it I don't like (e.g. the fact that it seems not to be able learn the words I use regularly - every time I type "for" it insists on telling me I really meant to type "fir"; and the bluetooth is pretty bad - I can't connect to my Bose SL III reliably, but my ancient Samsung Galaxy II has no problems).

Well, there are some tools available to root the phone. The way I can see that might work is to completely remove Win Feedback from the phone by accessing the OS FileSystem and deleting app's files.
You can very easily gain access to the filesystem: Create a shortcut to your C: drive on pc and upload it on the phone, from here open it with File Explorer and you're on the root of the device (this actually works ). From there try to find the Win Feedback app and delete its files. Be careful as doing something wrong, you might need to reset the device.

Hmmm ... tried that but I must have stuffed it up. All I get on the phone is a link to the shortcut on my PC. I'll try emailing the shortcut to myself on my phone, then save it from there. Will let you know what happens.
LATER: Nope, that didn't work.
I have the answer !!!
