Well this is a new, and highly frustrating problem... - Droid 2 General

is there anyway to delete a specific file IN a backup?
I'm trying to restore my droid 2 right now, and there is one specific file that keeps locking up (literally freezing, only way out is a battery pull).
it's "GSTRINGS_PREFS.xml" by the way. and no, it's a guitar tuner app, not that type of g-string.

Use unyaffs on linux to extract the image.img
Or use yaffs explorer (or extractor i dont remember) from market.
And then repack the image.

have you tried using root explorer and going into where the file is and deleting it that way or are you not able to even get it to get that far

[Q] Replacing build.prop?

hi!
in order to test something, i need to replace the build.prop in root/system with a modified one. but trying to delete this file with astro manager displays an error message, and just copying the modified build.prop over the old one doesn't work too (nothing happens).
so my question is: how do you replace such a file?
thanks in advance for your help
are you serious!?!?!?
If the build.prop is located on the Android folder IT HAS TO BE A SYSTEM FILE !!!
if you mod the system files you could break android or the system just won't let you do it, you will need R and W privileges to do that.
edit the system files from your PC or just boot up in to windows mobile.
use some common scene next time.
hope it helps!

Do you use a cyanogen build?
yes and there is already a cyanogen rom posted with the proper build.prop fixed, so you won't have to edit anything, just search for it.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
mmmh actually cyanogen made things easy to replace a system file, just copy your file into sdcard/android/root/system and reboot.
thanks for your help / posts. but unfortunately they're not helpful.
yes, i am serious! and yes, of course it's a system file. i know as well that modification might brick android.
there are reasons for modifying this file. some people seem to be able to, e.g. for chaning screen point density or modify the data passthrough.
so, please tell me, how can i edit/modify a system file from pc or windows mobile when its within the data.img-file?
thanks for any tips / hints on this.
use root explorer

Thank you VERY much for your help - I finally got it to work by listening your instructions. It is simply different if you have HD2 and plus CM mod. That figures why it was going back all the time to 180 instead of changing it - because it runs from sd card and that's where it needs to be replaced as well ...

Swpye for D2-HELP please

I accidently deleted the file folder from my phone com.swype.inputmethod (not sure if that is the exact name, but close) and now I can't swype. Does anyone know how I can get it back? Or if it is still on my phone somewhere...I tries to restore w/ Ti, but it didn't seem to work.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
If you search around a little bit the system dump from the D2 is posted somewhere, grab the swype apk and either copy it to the SD card and install it (I generally just use astro to get the application manager to open and let me install) or connect your phone to the computer in PC Mode and use adb to install (adb install swype.apk). You will need to either run adb from the installed folder on your computer or modify your environment path to include the location of adb.
So I found it....but now I have yet another problem...I'm deodexed and the dump file is odexed....will it still work?

[Q] Fix DNS Facebook, we need an developer to help

Hi everybody.
I'm come from Vietnam, where the Facebook is now banned.
We need someone to write a program to update the host file in /system/etc/ by just a touch.
Please copy the IP from http://armabloggin.com/2009/07/facebook-dns-block-fix/
to the host file (like AdFree program).
We cannot edit this file by Astro because it read-only. We don't know how to S-OFF our Android.
Thank you so much.
I thought that AdFree is for rooted phones only.
Here's the host file
I've modified the host file for you but I don't think you can get much further until you root your phone, giving yourself access to system/etc/ where the "hosts" file is for replacement.
Remove the .txt extension and replace it with your hosts file in /system/etc/ after rooting.
If your phone cannot be rooted at http://unrevoked.com/ have a look on the sub forum here for your phone.
As previously stated, changing any system file is impossible without root.
Why can't you use a one-click-rooting program? There are plenty around that work for quite a lot of phones. If that doesn't work there will be device specific guides available, unless it's a phone that can't be rooted (is there any?).
Sorry, I've already root the HTC Desire by Unrevoked.com and have RA-recovery.
I mean that I don't have S-OFF in my device.
I also used Astro to copy the host file to SD Card and edited it. But I cannot replace the host file to system/etc/.
So I need you help write a mini-soft like AdFree.
Have you tried using adb to push the hosts file (in recovery) or root explorer? No need to S-OFF.
I think a soft will easy to use for everyone, don't need experiment in adb, root or s-off.
Anyone developer can make it easy?

I think the problem is that you didn't mounted the system partition. Try ES FileExplorer, it can work as root and can mount partitions

Hi,I am vietnamese too,if you can't root your phone you can follow the full instruction on tinhte.vn forum.
I whipped this up for you.
It doesn't look great but it does the job. Put the 'hosts' file on your sdcard (not in any folder) that you want to move and rename it 'hosts.txt'. Then run the app and press the button. You'll probably need to reboot afterwards.
Enjoy.
This doesn't back up the hosts file on your phone so you may want to do that manually.
[YOU NEED ROOT ACCESS]
Thank you so much.

Dear Meltus,
Firstly, I thank you very much to write this apk for me. You're so kind.
But it's maybe something wrong!
I install your apk, put the hosts.txt in SDCard (in the root, not in any folder).
Then run the app and press the button, reboot afterwards.
I used Astro to view the hosts file. But this file is error. It has 0 byte and can be read.
Please fix it. Thank you so much, again.
P/S: Maybe you make an options to chose folder of hosts file.
Further, you can develop this apk to change any file of system by chose the source and destiny paths.

[Q] Cannot delete some folders

So I have a few folders which cannot be deleted. ES file explorer just says xxx cannot be deleted. I can rename the folder but not move or delete. I'm guessing there is a problem with one of the files in the folder but there are loads.
I origionally rooted the nexus 7 so I could use sixaxis but found too much lag compared with plugging in the controller so decided to return to a stock image. I did an app+data+sd card backup with nexus tools and it was after doing this I have had this problem. (also most of my games which I backed up lost their saves - wheres my water, dead trigger + others is this normal for these games?)
Any advice much appreciated
(oh since applying the stock image I no longer have root)
Could be a file permissions problem, try rooting your device again then changing permissions on the files to give yourself full read/write access to these files.
If this doesn't work you could try deleting them through the command line, but this would also require you to root your device again.
Hope I helped.
Hi thanks for your suggestion. I completely forgot I posted this. Anyway I rooted my device using the toolkit and all worked well. But I still cannot delete many folders and files and also some apps don't seem to be able to save properly.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong? Apart from this the system is stable and I would rather not do a fresh install because of all the games I have (long downloads and I have had problems backing up and restoring saves in the past) is there a way to just set all the files and folders on my phone to read / write (es file explorer reports these files have the required permissions but maybe setting them might do something)

Huawei is weird

Ok so I used superoneclick to root my ladies u8800-51. Wow simple as ever coming from HTC let me say. Going to install the CWM recovery.img to it, screen was purple/Red. I accidentally renamed the folder that was there instead of just the original recovery image. So questions... What was the folders original name? now no recovery is coming up just a blue screen.. HElp me get her phone going again so i can flash some ROMS
The recovery.img is in .cust_backup\image at least in my u8800

So it having different colors n not going into recovery might b an issue right ? I might have not done something right even though I read instructions 4x n all. Lol my girl is now complaining she can't play candy crush either on it. Like I said huawei is odd n weird to me.

You had overwrite file recovery.img, no rename the folder. You are weird, no Huawei.
Now you have bricked phone.
You can try connect phone in bluescreen to pc, maybe you can see partitions.
If your phone is still visible as usb mass storage, rename the folder to "image". There will be only one folder in that partition.

Phone is not bricked. Still boots up, works n I still have root access . I'm just use to HTC n their quirks n not using superoneclick to root things. I might b weird who knows.
So me seeing partitions. What can be done from there ? How do I complete root from here
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda app-developers app
You just haven't the recovery mode(for this the blue image). This doesn't mean that the phone isn't rooted. There are 2 separate things. You can use a file explorer with root option(e.g ES file explorer), to go the the "image" folder in which are all the system images(recovery.img, boot.img etc). The path is /.cust_backup/image and in this folder you will find the recovery.img. Probably this image haven't a different name or extension. It must be recovery.img, otherwise the system doesn't recognize it. To make changes in this folder you must previously mount it as Read/Write(is Read only by default). For this you can use Remount application(you can find it on google play), and then you can from ES file explorer(or any other root file manager) to rename the file or replace and whatever you want.
This is one from several ways. You can also boot again in pink screen mode and do these changes(without the need of remounting) from pc file explorer. You can also do something similar as the first way from pc via adb.

No...
Just hold +/- plus power buttons when the phone is off
Connect to computer and drag recovery.img to the folder
if it asks, overwrite.
Out of curiousity, what guide are you following?
