there seem to be much of Touch/Finger Friendly apps looming around..
how about a Finger Friendly application launcher? i know, Most, now uses HTC HOME as their all in all, time, profile and app launcher plugin.. but the HTC HOME launcher only permits 7 shortcuts and the icons are ugly, and shortcut name is not supported..
and for those who don't want their homescreen/todayscreen be eaten up by a 180 pixel high plugin (HTC HOME), maybe a better touch friendly launcher is a good approach..
how about a 40 pixel height single-row app launcher.. it can't go higher than that.. what makes it different? it can stack lots of shortcuts even it is on a single row..
HOW IT SHOULD LOOK?
initially it shows only 5 icons.. but if you swipe your finger left or right.. it moves or slides the icons and reveals other icons/shortcuts in the horizontal list (originally hidden off screen).. when you reach the end of the list, you are then looped back to the first icon.. much of a carousel.. maybe icons can be changed using TGA or PNG, and customizable shortcut names is applicable..
the concept saves a hell lot of Today Screen space (so faster to redraw) and is fun to use, also, it would be the first Today plugin to utilize the Touch drivers/concept..
how about it guys? if only i have programming prowess, i'll be the one to create this..
Good thought, but one thing i hate about the HTC Home is it is bog memory hooging application.
I want one with less memory consuming.
Very nice concept hope someone will take up this project.
Such thing exists already. Just google for RLTODAY. It's not only a clock, but also does a good job as launcher. Can be easily customized for any requirements.
I use clauncher, works great, icons the size you choose, tabs etc. but sometimes it doesn't appear after a sr. with wm6. Ilauncher is similar, but I think not free.
I second the vote for RLToday, highly vertasile, and very easy to use.

Hmm, I'll have to look into what famewolf posted, but I'm still a fan of either HTC Home or RLToday. I know a while ago there was a post on how to exactly duplicate the iPhone look with RlToday and some themes, but I believe it's been taked down due to copy right reasons by Apple.
yes i know and already used RLTODAY CLAUNCH and ILAUNCH.. the only drawback is, as i said earlier, is the todayscreen usage..
RLTODAY and ILAUNCH eats up today screen estate.. as you add additional icons, additional space is required and more columns are made.. imagine, if you want 16 shortcuts at 32-40pixels each, that means you will have 4 columns having 4-5 shortcuts each.. eating up almost 200pixels of today screen space..
separating the shortcuts in TABS, once again eats up space, for TABS eat about 16-24 pixels of estate and they are uber ugly.. added the fact that they are NOT FINGER FRIENDLY..
a feature i want to utilize in my concept is the DRAG AND SWIPE method.. USE TOUCH CONCEPT ON TODAY SCREEN!
USE ONLY 1 COLUMN OF SHORTCUTS and HORIZONTALLY SWIPE YOUR WAY TO THE LIST.. no need of itching the tabs..
and NO! (@famewolf) i think we don't need another AYEPHONE clone.. it's time we stick to what we have and THINK OF NEW CONCEPTS on how we utilize OUR own interface.. another FULLSCREEN AYEPHONE like launcher is another RAM killer and a launcher takes more time to load than the application you want launched is crazy..
The launcher I posted is the "whoneedsaniphone.com" launcher which uses flashlite 2.1(adobe flash). It leaves the today screen alone. It's been mentioned in multiple threads on this board.
@famewolf.. i appcreciate the reply and the link.. thanks..
yes i know WNAIP.. i've participated on the beta testing of that app (tried it more than once).. and that's my point.. it is a LAUNCHER application.. it is not a today screen plugin..
using a LAUNCHER APPLICATION means, you need to START the LAUNCHER first, before launching your desired application.. it takes more time and RAM.. and it runs on FLASH.. and rendered in full screen makes it more slower to redraw.. and as far as i can see.. it IS an IPHONE springboard (the original iphone launcher interface) clone.. and i can say for most that it is starting to become SICKENING..
we're killing the ESSENCE of our TODAY plugin.. why not just improve what we have instead..

I believe I gave you what you asked for. As far as a "today screen launcher" various solutions already exist..everything from the laucher built into batterystatus to claunch, the favorites in pbar..etc. I personally like my today screen just like it is showing my appointments and status of various things.
As far as the flash interface...all new PROVIDER rom's are going to start coming with adobe flashlite installed by default..the trend in future will be to use more flash based apps so you might as well get used to it at some point. Personally the "launcher" I like most is Microsoft voice command..hit a button and say "run xprogram" and it does.
Check out V2R. Think this is one company and product most of us here are not familiar
Tried it before. Pretty good. But I'm using iLauncher, so didn't want to add this in.
Can't you do a scrolling row of apps with SPB PocketPlus?

+1 for UltimateLaunch
It's fast, smooth, light and highly customizable.
Take a look at iphonetoday
iphonetoday is a good one. light and easy to use and is being supported in XDA forum. Highly recommended.
I prefer a system like:
1. LauncherPro
2. Free Power Widget
3. Digital Clock Widget
4. Smooth Calendar
5. Snowstorm weather widget
6. Increasing Ring
7. Visual Task Switcher Free
8. Calendar Snooze
9. 3D Gallery
10. Belo Call Dialer
on market
11. Lockscreen - sense HD on XDA - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791315
Thanks, you posted some cool apps which I needed: Smooth Calendar and the Visual Task Switcher.
I went away from Sense just recently, since it's slow - Especially in the app drawer.
Anyway, do you know a good Mail-Widget? I like the one from HTC but that isn't useable (as any HTC Widget) on LP. (I got Launcher Pro Plus btw)
My only problem with non-sense launchers(LauncherPro and ADW Launcher) is that they both lack a good looking mail widget or a facebook widget(No, don't suggest Pure Messanger, its not even close to HTC's).
I think that LP is a cool launcher, althou its preformance kindda lacking...
Its choopy and laggish when moving between docks, to the point it rly bugs me, other than that, top notch.

What about LauncherPro Plus? It iterally has cloned sense widgets incl. Facebook, twitter, friends (friendstream) messaging, bookmarks and contacts

I am using Launcher pro plus at the moment and it does not have any sort of mail widget. Pure messenger does not cut it

How did you set up the Sense HD Lockscreen?
It's good that we have choice people, no need to down rank aosp android or sense or xyz....
I always return to Sense no matter what rom I try. AOSP, MIUI, Cyanogen....For some reason 'regular' Android just seems 'bland' to me.
And also, Sense isn't slow but I do agree that the app menu is slow in scrolling. Something that plagued Sense since the Hero 1.6 days.
OP: Great set-up, I am sure people will he thankful for your set-up.

for Sense HD Lockscreen
While Sense brings alot of benefits, I've always found that the default homepage is very wasteful in terms of screen real estate. I want to replace it with something like the default Android homepage - a search bar, and a selection of as many widgets and shortcuts as can fit on the screen. What's the best way of achieving what I want?
I've seen references to MaxManila and Co0kie's Home Tab Editor - are these what I'm looking for?
You should check out other launchers like LauncherPro from the Market
But, really you can make any homepage look like stock with widgets

Whoa, you might be jumping around to different device forums a bit here. MaxManila and CHT are mods for the old Windows Mobile OS, which does not even run on the G2/Desire Z. Different devices, different OS.
On Android, the app that is tied to the home button, and constitutes your home page and apps drawer is known as the "launcher". The stock Sense launcher is really slow and a resource hog. I highly suggest trying an alternative launcher.
As mentioned above, Launcher Pro seems very popular by users here. That, and ADW Launcher seem the most popular alternative launchers. I personally like ADW Launcher, since it has the option to lock the home screen. GO Launcher also seems pretty cool, and there are others. The ones I mentioned are all free (but have paid versions with more features). So just find them on the Market and see which you like best. You can even switch back and forth easily by using the Home Switcher for Froyo app.
Hey guys, just wondering why some of you sware by sense. I am currently on Unity and the only thing I really use is the weather lock screen. I had to switch to Launcher Pro due to the lag of the stock launcher. I love eye candy but not at the cost of speed. Sense has always kind of been associated with the word lag it seems. So what do you guys like most about Sense and what you keeps you from moving away from it? What am I missing about these Sense ROMs?
Notification bar offer the last used applications and you can switch view to rapidly disconnect your Wifi, GPS, etc.
It's Eye-candy,the camera app contains lots of effect, you can locate your phone via htcsense.com, etc.
Also when you plug the phone to your computer you have a better interface with a lot of options like hotspot, internet computer->phone, internet phone->computer to PC AND Mac OS x.
It's awfully purty...

Im on the awesome mexdroidmod rom, but I do miss a few aspects of sense. The lock screen is amazing, but what I really miss is the dialer and camera. I have tried many replacement apps for these but haven't found anything that suits me. I also seem to get better facebook and hotmail contact integration on sense roms. Still the speed of the non sense roms is more important to me.

I swear by sense because it is exactly what I am used to. I used the HTC touch pro using sense for winmo and now sense for android. I like the feel and integration HTC has done for their UI.
I don't really use the Sense 3.0 (or Sense 2.0 for that matter) weather app at all.
What I do like about Sense is that it has the wifi hotspot available out of the box; no need for any extra apps to get that function.
Sense 3.0 camera also comes with the panoramic function which I think is quite handy.
I also like the quick settings available after dragging down the notifications tray. Not too sure if that's from Sense 3.0 or is it an added feature of Unity though, but it's handy and saves me from having to install the toggle widgets.
I like sense because it has the extra conveniences just like everyone likes using. I like the integration of FB contacts with the contacts. I really love how you can launch apps in the lock screen with 3.0
I dont like using the weather that much either, but the overlay is just very very pretty. Htc sense is one of the reasons android is better than iOS.
i'm on MIUI now, love MIUI's notification settings toggles, way better than sense 3.0... any way to import MIUI notification bar to non MIUI roms??
not much to complain about MIUI, some gps problems tough :/
Senses dock is so nonfunctional :/ only 3 shortcuts, and 2 of them are "useles". no need to keep customize button available @ dock. And then the appdrawer button, like to use launcher pros swipe up to open appdrawer.
I like sense too because it gives selection of usb connection types, MIUI only asks if i want to mount sdcard. for internet share, need to go though all the settings.
I'm on Unity now as well, and the Sense 3.0 launcher actually feels less laggy than past versions, especially considering all the animations. But you're right in alternate launchers are still faster/smoother, and also much customizable. I'm using ADW EX. People often ask, why use Sense if you aren't using the Sense launcher. But there is actually a lot to Sense, besides just the launcher.
The Sense camera continues to completely pwn the stock Android one in layout, looks and features. I also prefer the HTC dialer and keyboard over stock Android, although many of the differences for those are aesthetic, and its just a matter of personal preference. Of course Sense 3.0 has "trace" on the keyboard, but Swype is still better at this style of text input.
The notification area (with quick settings) and lockscreen (with fast launching of your favorite apps) on Sense 3.0 are quite nice. The HTC stock and weather apps are pretty nice too. Nothing special that can't be matched or beat by Market apps. But its nice to have apps that are integrated with the general theming of the ROM, no ads, etc.
Agree with above comment that the Sense dock is pretty useless. It takes up a lot of space for so little functionality. HTC actually added the ability to customize the dock apps for the version of Sense on the Flyer tablet. Hopefully, this is a feature they bring to the phone version of Sense.
one more thing, i like senses web browser app, it's great, is there a standalone app for nonsense phones?
Almost There Sense
For me, the things I like about sense are the social (wish tweeter and facebook were separate) and weather widgets, the lock screen and the overall look and feel.
Things that keep me on CM7 (with launcher pro) are: configuring of the dock, scrollable widgets, speed and free memory, no "The application HTC Sense (process com.htc.as) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" messages.
If the dock on the Sense ROM was more configurable (may have 5 icons instead of 3) and scrollable widgets, then Sense might become my DD.
On a side note, I haven't tried Launcher Pro with Sense, so maybe there is something to try. Curious how many people use Sense with non-sense launchers.
-brad
I use sense with laucherpro. Main reason for me to use sense are the following:
-Smart Dialer
-Email app (unified mailbox)
-Contact list
-Calendar (like the way how it looks)
You probably can get these options by downloading some other apps, but i like to keep my phone as stock and functional possible.
I've used CM6 and CM7 and I always end up back on a Sense ROM (lately, Sense Unity), for several reasons:
1. Camera - the stock (and CM) camera experience is ABYSMAL. Completely terrible. The Sense camera app has so many more options and just gives a MUCH better experience.
2. Sharing - this is hard to explain, but in AOSP-based ROMs, when you click to share something, the intents menu that pops up ISN'T scrollable - that means, if you have lots of apps that tie into that menu, it may crowd out the one you want to use. In Sense ROMs, this submenu is scrollable, so I can access EVERYTHING on that list.
3. Exchange mail - the Sense mail app has several improvements in functionality over the stock one, including the ability to subscribe to folders (so they automatically update), an integrated inbox with all your subscribed folders, etc. It also looks MUCH better.
4. The Sense 3.0 lockscreen is freakin amazing. Anything prior to Sense 3.0, CM7's is actually better
5. Settings - Sense has the extras that let the ringer mute itself when you pick up the phone, switch to speakerphone by putting it face-down, etc etc. I *believe* the later versions of CM7 have that as well, but it wasn't commonplace until recently.
I use LauncherPro Plus, and have on all my phones, regardless of the ROM. The customization options and lower memory profile make it a slam-dunk. I don't use Sense Launcher and I don't use ADW, so all my Sense benefits are on the backend.
I haven't used the ROM's stock launcher since my HTC Hero running 1.5. My current choice is GO Launcher EX with the paid version of Colorize Widgets or the free GOWidgerts. I would love to figure out a way to run the Sense 3.0 widgets with a third-party launcher.
As many people have already mentioned, the Sense 3.0 weather lockscreen is great. I also love the "cylinder tumblers" style of setting date and time values. I hate having to click + and - buttons. The only way it could be better is if tapping on the value allowed you to type in the number, like in stock Android. Check out the implementation in the Sense Calendar app... it has click-stops every 15 minutes.
I tend to use 3rd-party replacements for everything else (dialer, SMS, keyboard), although the camera app is quite nice. If it were possible to get just the Sense 3.0 lockscreen (with wake/sleep-on-trackpad), I'd probably go back to running CM.
After installing Launcher Pro and using it for a while I love it, but I can`t seem to find any of my motorola/blur widgets anymore. They are in neither the widgets list, nor the launcher pro widgets list. I`ve done some googling around and have seen people complaining that some of the widgets don`t resize properly (or didn`t when the forum threads I found were made) but I can`t seem to find them at all.
Looked around a bit and did some other searching but all the results I`ve found have been dealing with problems resizing/widgets not rendering properly after some amount of time.
Running a rooted bell atrix with 2.3.4.
Any idea what`s going on?
like HTC widgets, you cannot use motorola widgets on a different launcher. you will have to go back to the default homescreen to use them.
which moto widget were you trying to use? They were all easily replaceable with better widgets such as Android Pro Widgets
the motorola works for me on launcherpro; the only widget that doesn't work is the world clock (but it works on adw)
the motorola widgets will be found under just "widgets" instead of a separate motorola/blur category.
