Root and Gingerbread - Desire HD General

Hi,
Before upgrading to Gingerbread, I would like to know if the root
for Gingerbread is working fine and if the phone is, after being rooted , stable.
Daniel

If anyone wants to give this a bash you could try Gingerbreak:
NB. Your phone MUST already have S-OFF if you don't want to have to downgrade first.!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765

I think you need to downgrade again before you can root your phone.
But in the development section there are stock 2.3 roms with root. Probably that's the right thing for you

Hi guys. I installed the gingerbreak apk & ran it.
It said it didn't work so I ok'd it & exited the app without rebooting.
I opened gingerbreak again & it asked if I would allow super user permission. I said yes.
Is this when I downgrade? Or can I just put new ROM on sdcard and boot into bootloader & flash it?
Sorry guys, all this is pretty complex stuff to me

Hi Folks.
For me Gingerbreak ran flawlessly.
Came from stock rom 1.32.405.6 rooted. ENG. & Radio S-off.
Installed Stock Gingerbread OTA.
Set USB debugging on.
Download & install superuser from market.
Download & install Gingerbreak.
Run Gingerbreak.
Choose "Root device"
Done!
Took about 5 min. Not counting OTA upd. of course.
Regards.
ELO

I installed the gingerbreak apk & ran it.
Gingerbreak rebooted my device but it is still not rooted.
I have S-OFF, USB debugging on and have ibstalled Superuser.
I have tried it twice.
Any idea what to do?
I have just noticed that after having upgraded to Gingerbread, My phone became S-On . This is the reason why I can't root my phone
Daniel

problem with s-off
I have problems with the s-off procedure after upgrading to android 2.3 official.
Gingrbreak works and permits rooting programs, but I'm not able to flash any otrher rom.
Any ideas? What am I doing wrong?
Thank you

The information you need can easily be found in the guides on the forum, there is no need for us to hold your hand and guide you step-by-step through the whole procedure. That's what the guides are for. You need to educate yourself a bit as rooting and flashing etc. are for users with atleast some experience. We're not using iPhones here where iTunes and Apple do everything for you. This might sound a bit harsh but there are tons of people filling the forum and asking for other members here to practically do everything for them. I suggest that until you understand what rooting and flashing involves, you stay away from it.
Here's something to get you going: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936214

To obtain s-off and root with gingerbreak, these is the steps to do in order?
Root visionary-> S-off-> (Eng-off??) -> Gingerbreak, and finally clockwork recovery
But visionary is working with 2.3.3 stock htc?

You actually rooted it when it asked for Super User permission, when it didn't ask the first time around, that's because SuperUser was installed by GingerBreak.

I am still running the Verizon stock rom for the DroidX. It is nice, but I want to explore the other custom options out there. What do I need to do in addition to rooting I guess, is my real question. And is the z4 root method sufficient, it was just one click and a reboot, but I do have superuser abilities now.

yes z4 root is sufficient as far as rooting goes ,now install rom manager and koush bootstrap recovery from the market ,they are free,as far as deodex you shouldnt have to worry about it since most roms will deodex for you when they install, but if you want to just place a theme without placing a rom then you will have to deodex first since the rom is not there to do it for you first.i would suggest reading this and get a better understanding

You might wanna use Unrevoked to root your device. Also, this is the Droid X forum, head over to the Evo section and there's loads of helpful information over there, including how to root using Unrevoked.

The first link is the thread over in the dev section that will link you to the second link I posted that will actually walk you through rooting and enabling side loading.
Good luck and back up your data first. You've been warned.
Ill tell you in a nutshell;
Flash 1.26
Run gladiroot
Upgrade to 1.57
Upgrade to 1.83
Run "afterupdate" gladiroot
Now you're on 1.83 rooted!

That route works as well, but takes much longer and is tougher to do if he is already on .83
From what I understand he would be better off using the Gladiroot method, but he may not be able to do all of that depending on his skill level.
update didn't screw up root
I am new to rooting as well and new to android (messed around a lot with WinMo with generous help from xda thanks).
Rooted my atrix just prior to the OTA update with intentions to try out how rooting worked and hoping that the new update will give me a fresh start if I screw up.
Installed my update 4.1.83 and looked to see if I lost my superuser status, and lo and behold it was still there. Also managed to side-load an apk (original intent for rooting) successfully after the update.
Haven't come across similar experience along the way so far.
(I used gingerbreak).
I had GreyBlur on 4.1.57, did Titanium backup to the EXTERNAL CARD (not internal storage), ran RSD with the 4.1.83, re rooted, reinstalled recovery, reflashed GreyBlur and most of my apps and settings stayed. the missing apps just got installed by Titanium and I had to resetup my home screens, but it was pretty painless. if you go all the way back to 4.1.26, it will put your phone back to stock and you will have to start over again. The last PITA is to modify the build.prop to get rid of the OTA message.

Root with updated to gingerbread

Right my phone has been in repair the last couple of weeks and since then a ota has come out UK device. Might be bit stupid can you get root and if so how or is it same as first getting root like the older roms.

Hi, I'm not sure if I could help you on this case based on my last experience, I've freshly updated my HD last week with a RUU rom (not OTA) and, when I was playing with Gingerbread, Gingerbreak app didn't worked to me, so, I've followed this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 ...
step by step on the Gingerbread case to get back on Froyo 2.2 and, later, I did what it's written here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037315Here
to reach (on 2.2) root, s-off, and those nice things , then I've updated again RUU rom and Gingerbreak, finally worked, with root, s-off, all perfect!
Hope u have luck, only left to said that mine it's a Spanish mobile, not Uk, but maybe it could work for you.
I just want to root to get Market Enabler. I don't want to change roms. Do I also have to downgrade and do all that? I think even a temp root would be fine just to download from the market. Any advice?
hi, if you have S-OFF (if you dont know what it is, google it!) then find the GingerBreak thread, follow its instructions.
If not, then you have to downgrade, root, and upgrade to 2.3(find a stock-rooted ROM). - (first link in the post above)
you could, alternatively, then S-OFF after downgrading and rooting, and officially upgrade then use GingerBreak.

[Q] Flashing ROM for the first time: Temp root or perm root? (GFE question too)

So after lurking in these forums for a few months, I've finally decided to put a different ROM on my MT4G, but it seems like most of the guides are out of date. Is it still OK to use Visionary if I'm going to flash to a Gingerbread-based ROM afterward? And if I want to use Good for Enterprise, what do I use to unroot and re-root any of the ROMs that are pre-rooted to begin with? I'm not afraid to tinker, but this is my first Android phone and I don't want to get it wrong. Help?
The ROM that you're going to flash has absolutely nothing to do with the ROM you currently have - and the ROM you currently have (and nothing else) has everything to do with the rooting method.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is do I need to perm root the current ROM in order to flash the device to a different ROM?

You are going to need perm root
More information on perm vs temp see here (or use google search)
There are a couple guides on how to gain perm root (click on the link in my sig for a list of a few guides under the "Rooting" section of the resource bible)
I personally used the terminal emulator version of this method when rooting my mt4g
Once you achieve S=Off and permroot your phone, there is no need to do it from ROM to ROM. Your phone will remain rooted until you decide to unroot it.
Ok, thanks! Will give it a try tomorrow.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Next question... Now that I've perm rooted, tried a few ROMs, and settled on one (Generation-X stock), does anyone know if Gingerbreak works to re-root the device if I were to unroot this ROM (in order to use Good for Enterprise)? I'd hate to back myself into a corner I can't get out of...
When you have custom recovery installed, you're not dependent on the OS at all.
Flashing SU update.zip will root you.
Nice! Thanks for the info!

Help? 2.2 vs 2.3.3 vs 2.3.4?!?

Okay, so bare with me. I am still on 2.2 running visionary r13 one touch and oc'd. I haven't messed with my phone since last year and this is as far as I got and was completely satisfied running this setup.
I have had the 2.3.3 ota hit my phone but I didn't install yet. When I researched a bit, it seems that many people are getting 2.3.4. Will I have to install 2.3.3 first and I will get an immediate OTA for 2.3.4? Furthermore, if I install 2.3.3, or 2.3.4, how will I go about oc'ing my phone again? I'm assuming there might not be an easy 1 touch root available. I'm limited to my abilities and found visionary 1 touch convenient and easy. Any help for a noob would be great!

well once you ota, you need to root your phone again before you can oc. also you need to ota to 2.3.3 before 2.3.4. also DO NOT USE VISIONARY, it will brick your phone
Try gfree to root ur phone!

I would personally recommend that you first properly root your phone using the wiki method (gfree). Then you can flash a pre-rooted OTA update. That way you'll keep root but also be on the latest software.
possible to "gfree" (root) even 2.3.3 stock?

I have official OTA 2.3.3 so does the wiki method (gfree) applies even for me? Or there's no-one that been able to root 2.3.3 version?
If the root has been done, can you please provide me with the links? Thank you.
Ok, so i pretty much need to uninstall visionary, install ota 1.3.3, install ota 1.3.4, and the finally perma root, then I can run oc?

If you're currently on the 2.3.3 OTA update, you'll first have to downgrade to 2.2, then achieve root with the gfree method, then go back to 2.3.3 with a pre-rooted ROM. Info I believe has made it into the wiki, but you may have to search some of the recent threads in here also.
do not update to 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 unless already rooted on froyo. There still is no official rooting method for those ota's. You will have to downgrade, root, s-off etc then flash a pre-rooted stock rom...or any rom for that matter. I am running completely stock 2.3.4 pre rooted and it runs great! Also as far as i know you do not need to move from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 you can go straight to 2.3.4. Also As far as i understand it t-mo messed up and labeled the update as 2.3.3 but it was really 2.3.4 once applied.

uninstall visionary, follow wiki to root, s-off, supercid (sim unlock) install clockworkrecovery and eng hboot. sounds like alot but gfree does it all in one shot. then your free to flash any pre rooted ota, or cm7, whatever you choose. and you wont brick your device...
hope this helped.

Sorry but this is bad advice. You shouldn't be using visionary for temp root either. It is unnecessary.
Well I'm just stating what I did. I just followed the sticky thread and out went without a hitch. Figured that it was there because it was a trusted method. Oh well, sorry it worked for me lol.

I agree that if you do use Visionary, it should only be used for temp and not perm root, but there are plenty of ways to root without visionary, and there's no need to mess with it.
