Have had a look around, but can't seem to see any threads like this, so am posting a new one.
Has anyone on Orange (or any other network) found that "their" network is no longer showing a name in the list of Available Networks (Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Networks->Network operators->Search Networks) ??
In the list of Available Networks the "Orange" network is represented, and "starred", (so I know it's selected) - but it's not showing a name of any sort.
If I click the checkbox against "Mobile Network" (Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Network), the line underneath just seems to hang at "Turning on....".
I have had issues getting a 3G signal recently and I think it might be connected to this?
The phone is not rooted - it's the standard Orange UK release of Android 2.2. I'm using LauncherPro Plus as the homescreen UI, but otherwise haven't made any other changes that could affect this (that I know of). I have "looked" at some of the APN settings, but have not made any changes to anything.
Anyone had anything similar??
Addendum - ok, playing with the phone this minute and the data connection is working! But I still have the missing network name - so any suggestions?

Curious: You say the representation is starred, what are the symbols / letters next to the star where you expect it to say "Orange"?

That's just it - there's nothing. There is an entry in the list, the entry has a green stylised star (to indicate its the chosen one), but there's no wording, nothing at all.
Vodafone UK, O2-UK, 3 UK are the other available networks.
Oddly, the "Mobile Networks" entry on the list of options on the previous page DOES have "Orange" showing.... ???
Oh - just realised that I am using SwitchPro Widget on my homescreen, but this shouldn't affect things if I go to the network settings directly, should it?
No idea if its related but I am on t-mobile (and elected to be part of this roaming onto orange if mine is unavailable thing many months ago)
Seem to start occuring yesterday but I lost all connectivity to 2G/3G but fine with Wifi. i.e. phone just said Emergency calls only. Not really any issue as reception in town where I 1st noticed it is variable but my mate with his Desire also on t-mobile was sitting nexting to me with 4bars and normally I always get a better signal strength in any given location LOL
So I went into settings and tried the auto select network. Wouldn't have it saying something along the lines of your requested network is unavailable. Tried the manual selection option and after about a minute it said it couldn't complete this operation.
Power off the phone and still emergency calls only.
Only selecting restart the phone put it back to t-mobile and 5bars again.
It lost connectivity several times during the afternoon and evening (different cell towers as I had travelled in between ocurrances) but so far today its all been fine.

On my Cingular 8125 I don't have the option to select which tower to connect to. I'd like to be able to select between Cingular Orange and Cingular Blue as Blue has a much better signal at my office. I was able to do this on my Motorolla v551 and it worked great.
But when I go to Settings --> Phone --> Network, there's only a "Find Network" button and I don't have the option to choose which network it actually connects to.
I know the Network tab has network selection features (they've displayed for me a couple times when I was on business travel roaming), they just seem to be hidden when I'm in my home calling area.
Any tips on a reg DWORD I can flip or something to enable network selection?
Unless you have a pre-2002 simcard you won't be able to select any network that isn't already added in the network list.
My friend has a 2125 with pretty much the exact same plan... signed up same time as me, got SIM card same time as me... why would he be able to select networks and not me?
I still think there's gotta be a software solution. :-/
I upgraded my 8125's ROM to the 2.17 version and now I have network select. Also I have a 3G sim card.
I'm on 2.17 as well, and I do NOT have these options! This is a real problem as I have no signal at home or work! I need to be able to select the old ATT tower in this area (which has perfect signal!!)
Someone block the SIM from doing this to us all please!
Ok, my network name shows up wrong on my wizard and I was wondering if there is any way of changing it?
I am subscribed with our local operator Wave Telecoms. They are a subsiduary company of Jersey Telecoms and actually use the same frequency etc in both of their networks (means I can roam between networks at no extra costs )
For some reason, my wizard shows my operator as Jersey Tel UK, rather than Wave.. Is there any way I can change this? It always used to say wave when i used the SIM in my old Sony Ericsson....
Also - is there any way that you can show cell broadcast messages on the wizard. I can't seem to find the setting anywhere - or even where it would show on the phone.....
For cell broadcast open your dialer with the green button, click menu, than options, then the tab named more. There is an option to enable cell broadcast channels.

i to m from guernsey and you are correct. about a month ago it show wave now is JT GSM.so you are not alone.wave cell broadcast on channel 50 and the only thing tha it broadcast is network name every 5 minutes as a message .it becomes very anoying.
Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Dave
Didn't have time to browse all the posts on this issue but while we're waiting for the next useless hotfix from HTC, I tried to go with manual settings for the network and network type by doing the following:
1. Wireless controls>Phone>Band: Change network type from Auto to WCDMA. Left Band Frequency on auto. Done.
2. Settings>All Settings>Personal>Phone>Network: Changed "Network selection" to "Manual". Your device will search for all available networks. Pick your carrier/network from the list.
3. On the same screen as 2, tap on "Set Networks" and uncheck all other networks except your own primary network.
With the above change the phone will only have my home carrier to choose from (not sure if that makes any difference) and the network type will always stay with HSPA which is no problem for me in the area I live, in fact I want that.
Cant confirm if this does it since the issue occurs sporadic, but so far five days without any SMS stuck in the outbox which is unusual for me, used to get it every single day.
Obviously the above leaves it to you to manually manage the network settings as well as running H all the time may be a problem for some, but if this works as an interim (hopefully not permanent!) solution for some users it could be worth giving it a shot...
Cheers.

On mine under Wireless Settings>Phone is only has the options for sounds available?
Jammie: Doesn't sound like the right place. It's basically just the Comm Manager.
Thats right: Comm Manager/Phone then scroll down to Band to make those changes, then Done or Cancel and hit the Menu/Network or Advanced Network tab.
Bear in mind that if you select WCDMA only as opposed to Auto, then you will have no signal at all if you go to a non-3G area (of which there are still many thousands of square miles in UK!); overall its best to keep this at Auto for everyday use.
OK, I did steps 2 & 3 but on the first I had problem... Phone couldn't connect with the network with WCDMA, only with gsm, so I turned it from auto to gsm... I don't care about 3G
have tried all that and it didn't solve the sms problem for me...
Hello AndroFrieds!
I have serious problem with my HTC HERO. I tried to find solution in yours IRC chat, but no one responded even on my side. So - I come here.
Well. Like month ago I installed new ROM, flashed, installed with zip file. Almost everything as written in tutorials. Only thing, like man with balls, I didn't done any backups.
At the moment I'm using MoDaCo 3.2. Also I purchased unlock code, and unlocked my phone.
Calling, sending sms, receiving calls and sms, using wlan, 99.89% apps - working well. But today I hit serious problem.
I have 3G internet connection available trough offer of my provider. I don't know, how to explain it, but probably, you know.
And right now - step by step. I got my settings, went to Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile network settings > Access Point Names, and inserted those inside. Any other options I left untouched, and I saw after few seconds on Connection status H icon with flashing bullets, which means "HSPA in use".
I went to my favorite browser (Dolphin), and tried to open any page. But loading bar got stocked, and nothing loaded. Funny things - I started to receive Twitter updates from Twitdroid. This means, that internet is working.
Unfortunately, I realized, that in Signal Strength icon place should be Roaming with R icon, not just those 5 bars.
I tried to find out, whats happening. I went to Settings > About Phone > Status, and there is written: Network: 3G LMT, Signal strength: -89dBm 12 asu, Mobile network type: HSDPA, Service state: In service, Roaming: Not roaming, Mobile network state: Connected.
As bolded text says - Not roaming. Then I went again to Settings > Wireless controls > Mobile network settings, to check for status there. And There is written: Data roaming: Automatic.
And this means, that roaming should start without any permissions, but my Hero don't understands it.
And after this detailed story, i have questions:
* Does anybody got this problem too?
* Is there any problem solutions?
I would be very happy, if anybody have solution for this.
Thank you!
