Got SGS II from Carphonewarehouse Talkmobile Contract - Galaxy S II General

Purchased my SGS II from Carphonewarehouse on tuesday 3/5/11.
TalkMobile (Vodafone 2g/3g network)
12month contract
25 pounds per month
300mins
1000 texts
Unlimited Internet <- no fair usage applied
and paid 200 Pounds upfront for the phone.
Firmware:
PDA I9100XWKDD
PHONE I9100XXKDH
CSC I9100XEUKD1

Apologies for the bump.
I'm thinking about going for a similar deal to you, but I'm worried about Talkmobile... Can you, or anyone else, confirm how good they are, especially with data? Do they give the same speed as their parent network, Vodafone?
Many thanks

Hi,
Was this a special deal for you or would anyone be able to get the same deal. I have just checked online and could not find the same deal. Seems like a very good deal.
Thanks

Currently waiting on my SGS II being delivered today. Selected Orange, 24 month contract (600 mins, unlimited txt's, 750 MB data allowance @ £35 via Orange Panther).

First thing to do is check out your 3g speed. Sorry but orange is rubbish for internet speed. Good overall coverage in the u.k but crap signal strength. You should try a swap with a different network provider if u can.

Thank's for the heads up. Will check as soon as it arrives. You wouldn't happen to know if Orange butcher the SGS 2 with their branding on case cover would you? I'd imagine as well it will be locked to Orange too.
The more I think about remaining with Orange the less appealing it seems.

It seems to be available here:
http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/choose-tariff/SAMSUNG-GALAXY-S-2/MONTHLY/NEW
I'll be going for the £30pm one as it ends up only £10 more expensive over a whole year, and you get an extra 100 minutes

I'm still waiting on mine to arrive 2 weeks after it being sent. To be fair they did send it but the couriers lost it so they will have to send a replacement.
As for Talkmobile - so far very impressed, great 3G coverage and speeds and it appears to be much more reliable for me compared to Orange.

been having nothing but signal problems with the s2 an talkmobile in central/sw london - outside it gets a 3g/H signal, indoors and i'm lucky if it gets edge!
still not sure if its the phone (from all the other threads about poor signal) or the network...
my old iphone 3gs on O2 always managed to get a 3g signal indoor at home/work.

Ah well - it's still better than what others are trying to sell me. I thought maybe you were doing some extreme rounding

Well I just think of it like this. Phone costs 500 right?
25pounds x 12 = 300
+ 200pounds up front for phone
= 500 pounds.
So for 12mths I'm getting phone + intenet & data. So good deal for me. Whereas if I bought the phone straight off for 500 sim only I'd have no data.
Most importantly its a 12month contract so I can move on after a year sgsIII and still be able to sell this sgsII for at least 200pounds.

What? So you're saying that CPW needs a custom firmware to allow the phone to accept sims from any network? Technical data please.
How do the straight from Samsung phones do it on stock firmware?
You seem to post heresay and speculation on a lot of posts with no technical information to back it up. This doesn't benefit the community.

Galaxy Note- Expected delivery Date T-mobileBuymobiles.net

Is anyone else waiting for their Galaxy note to be delivered by buymobiles.net on t-mobile. I have been waiting a long time! it says expected by 19/11/2011. I called yesterday and they said wait till next week! when will i get this device. Its killing me!
Yup, also ordered from them here! Looks like early next week before we see our devices, I'm guessing we'll have it by Tuesday/Wednesday!
Anyone know if it is unlocked? (Should be easy to unlock as far as I know.)
Yes hopefully its unlocked. Cant see why it wouldnt be. What contract did you get?
Looks like a great deal except it doesn't include HSDPA. The 'unlimited web' is 3g (384kbps) only. I think you can add HSDPA for £5 a month (?) but then T-mobile isn't any better value than any other network.
My order has been dispatched, if the email is to be believed.
I popped into town today, as Phones4U had them in stock when i rang, got there and the idiot i spoke to thought i meant the Nexus
He then preceeded to question why i want a Note. He clearly didnt know much about them, as he was telling me the Nexus is better, and screens are the same.
I then went to all the other high street stores. Carphone Warehouse had a display model, which was awesome. Guy said they had them in stock, then after trying to buy one, his manager said they are demo models, and cant be sold.
I would have gladly bought one, and just sent the buymobiles one back.
Ho hum, lets hope it arrives Monday, and that my gf actually answers the door!

with T-mo there's a "fair use" policy that says 500mb, check the fine print. I expect most carriers have something similar if they aren't stating a limit in the tarrif. It's aimed at curtailing heavy streaming use.

I am on the 3gb android limit, currently with t mobile. I used to stream loads of stuff download hd films with ease. Speed never dropped. hmm. I have read a thread which says you can call t mobile up, as them to put you on hsdpa speeds for free.

I will try that, see what happens!
Can someone who ordered theirs from buymobilephones.net explain what sim free means? I don't want a plan. Does sim free come with or without a sim?
Also, I thought the GN doesn't officially support the T-Mobile 1700 spectrum that gives you H+ speeds. I learned (mostly by reading these threads) that if you are on T-Mobile you can use it as a phone, but you'll only have Edge speeds.
Is this correct?

SIM free means the phone without any SIM card and no carrier customisations.

Ah, I think you're referring to T-Mobile in the USA? We are talking about T-Mobile in the UK which we have 3G/HSDPA access on the Note. (Though the speed is artificially limited to 384kbit/s )
384kbps?? I just did a speed test while on a moving train and got 1.8mbps on the t mobile package your talking about.
The 500 mb cap only counts for downloads and streaming. Once you go over the 500mb you can still surf etc. but they block any downloads or streaming for the rest of the month.
I ordered my note in the last week of October and was told I would receive it the first week in November! It's now the 21st and they still can't even tell us when we are going to get it! If we'd bought this phone on Orange we'd have had the phone for nearly 3 weeks by now!
I'm going to question them on their Twitter feed again later today (@buymobile_help). I'll report back what they say.

These dudes take the pee. I will call them up again today see when im getting the phone. Its been too long! The dude told me I will get it on saturday!
I got a reply from twitter. Two other people asked the same question at the same time i did on their feed.
They told one us it would be another 7-10 days for delivery and then me and the other person they had no ETA.
Reading between the lines.... They don't have a clue when they will have stock.
I just want to clarify what I've read elsewhere about the 384kbps 'cap' on the T-mobile unlimited web bundle. I haven't experienced it myself, as I don't have a T-mobile account.
Apparently if you buy an Android phone direct from T-mobile, you will get full HSDPA speeds. However, if you buy from a reseller like Buymobiles.net, it will be limited to 384kbps only. People have apparently been charged an additional £5 or £7.50 a month to get a 'web and walk plus' bundle that gives them full HSDPA speeds. There is also one post where someone says he managed to get HSDPA enabled for nothing. I cannot verify these claims. I can only suggest that once you get the handset you make sure you have HSDPA before the cooling off period finishes.
I myself have ordered a Note from e2Save on TalkMobile. £379.99 for the phone + £12 a month for 24 months for 200 mins/200 texts/1Gb data
Andy
They have idea. Yet they have taken my 49.99£ b---ds!

I went on the O2 50 plan. 24 month contract, £13.50 Monthly, £279.99 Handset cost.
I'm not planning to use this SIM, I just got this contract to get the handset.
Apparently it is possible to remove data from the monthly bill after the first month. This would reduce the monthly bill to £10.50.
£10.50 * 23 months = £241.50 + £13.50 for the first month = £255.00 for the contract.
£255 + £280 handset cost = £535.00 - £50 QuidCo cashback = £485.00.
Not bad if you think about getting the contract for the handset on its own
I plan to use GiffGaff instead of O2.

O2 gave me such a fu©king run around with promising to match that deal, then 2 days later saying they couldn't that I decided to go to Vodafone after 11 years with O2.
Yesterday O2 send me a mail saying my order was being processed for £250 handset at £75 a month for 24 months... I was proper peeved. Sorted now, but put me off O2 a hell of a lot.

The reason they don't need to be on the networks system is, the phone supplied through p4u, cpw, etc are often SIM free. So effectively your network contract might as well be SIM only. All the reseller needs is a price for the phone and an agreed commission for selling plans at particular prices and then they can start taking pre-orders. The bonus is no network branding, which can range from acceptable to dreadful.

No I don't get cash back I'm afraid. This is an orange contract but they're giving me 2 orange swappables. That didn't mean anything to me until they explained I can use 2 services that don't tap into my data. I.e. Being able to watch certain programmes or streaming/downloading music without using my data.
Edit: I've never used my full 1200 minutes in all honesty. I rarely use my phones for calls and I still have my magic numbers I guess.

I really like it, I really do, have one or two little annoyances, but generally I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a phone that much (maybe iphone 4)
So yeah, i'ts going back but i'm gonna commit (and for someone like me who changed phones and find fault with phones all the time thats quite a big thing !!!)
I upgraded to the Orange panther 41 contract through p4u, 18 month, 600 mins, unlimited text, 1gb data, HTC One silver free with flip cover.
The best bits are, p4u gives 5 pounds discount on the tarrif so 36 per month, then they give 144 pounds cash back (directly wire to my bank 42 days after activation) so effectively I am paying 28 pounds for 18 month!
Good deal you think?
The reason I could get that was because dialaphone was doing a new contract deal, essentially the same as mine but with 4 redemptions each 36 pounds.
And I mentioned that to p4u so they matched the price.
Just checked dialaphone, they don't do this deal anymore but panther 36 with means only 400 mins and 750mb data. Same price with 4 redemption.

almost the same as me, except i got mine from dialaphone - though my cashback is in installments instead of in one lump sum - dialaphone did offer me a lump sum, but it wasnt as much as im getting now - now i will get £144, they offered me £100 in a lump sum.
i might call up and ask them to switch me to the lump sum - i will probably forget all about the bill sending in thing!
also, did you use a cashback site?
with quidco or topcashback you can/could get an extra £70 cashback
edit. regarding who to go for - yea the deal h.han and I got is the cheapest of all I think, depends whether what is included fits your needs and whether orange/tmobile/ee are good in your area.

Sounds a fantastic deal but i had such **** with orange a year or two back i vowed never to go back to them, now they and t-mobile have merged it might not matter that much .... if anyone see's any other good deals i'd appreciate it !!! thanks to you guys for posting this up
P4U are usually the best however i went direct through Vodafone this time and i got;
Free Phone
Free Flip Cover
£37 per month with Unlimited Calls, Text and 1GB data (unlimited for 3 months) on a 24 month contract.
Also got the phone within 2 business days of ordering
your t-mobile has gotten better recently because they now share networks with orange and also EE
i would also say don't let a free flip case from any company sway you - its crap lol

I did not go through cashback site cos I was looking for upgrade.
I did ordered a new contract at that time on dialaphone through quidco initially, but it was a mistake, I thought I could port my existing Orange number to the new Orange contract, but that's not possible so I cancelled that. And accidentally had a chat with p4u so they offered me the same deal as dialaphone but upgrade, too good to miss so I took it.
No cashback from quidco though, but I am happy.

I don't have good experience with Orange either, their 3G is the slowest amongst all the operators because they didn't buy the best 3G frequency, and I had to upgrade 4 times since last Friday through p4u and make tons of call to Orange to remove a stupid flag in their system to get my 4th upgrade attempt approved.
But their price is the cheapest through p4u so I just took it.
Oh, by the way, the 4G from EE definitely is the fastest in all operators since the frequency band is very good.

here's a question
like ee say you have 1gb of 4g data per month
what happens if you go over that, does 3g signal count towards that etc ???
im even contemplating going 4g ... i would go with 3 but i cant get signal in my spare room and thats where i tend to spend a lot of my time working of weekends

dont you have wifi at home?
i am assuming that by paying EE for 4g, you are simply paying for "access" to their 4g network - your 1gb will be depleted whether or not you use the 4g or not.

And to add to that, maybe I am misleading here, my contract is with Orange, the 3G brand of EE, so I do not have any 4G service in my tarrif, only 3G.
If you want to sign a 4G deal with EE, the price will be much higher.
With 4G service, it only means the option of connecting to 4G is there, but whether you will get 4G in your area or not, is irrelevant and those 1gb usage includes all traffic on 4G, 3G and GPRS.
If you go over, you will need to pay extra to get additional data.

No option for delivery, and doesn't seem to be instock anywhere. I've checked quite a few postcodes and it checks the 10 closest stores.

It's now back to its original price!
Never once saw it available either for delivery or collection at any of the local and nearby stores. Seems like a scam to get you into the shop or something weird?

From their Twitter account:
I am sorry the deal was only on for 1 week and as it was such a good deal we quickly sold out of stock in most areas. It may go down in price again in the future however we are not given any prior knowledge of this. Julie
Hi, I have checked and we we will be getting more stock in of 133/4139 around the 19th January. Julie

Yes, but at the offer price or not? Not much of a bargain otherwise.

Well as she said it's unknown. Seems like a dirty trick to get people visit their site to keep checking stock. I don't believe there ever was even stock of 1 Moto G 16GB. Surely London would have at least some stock if there was stock.
Kept checking Argos website every day and never seen 16 GB in stock. And even now when the price went back up to £169.95 Moto G is out of stock.
I tend to ignore these Argos deals now. It's just a dirty trick to get publicity on Hot UK Deals. These have never been in stock while at this price, just as the LTE Nexus 7 wasn't £269 until it was already out of stock. If you want one of these the bigger Tescos tend to have stock of the 16GB now. For £131 unlocked they're still a bargain.
its definitely a trick Argos do. I've noticed it on all kinds of things they sell, whenever they come up on price match sites, it is ALWAYS out of stock.
Tesco is the best bet, 129 pay and go, and then 2 pound to unlock..

I'm considering picking one up for free* on a Tescomobile contract - £12.50 per month for 500MB data or £15 for 1GB - uses o2 network - o2 would charge me £16 for 750Mb data sim only contract direct through them. Only thing that's making me pause is more expensive data roaming charges with tescomobile.
*not quite free - I'd have to pay £60 to terminate my current o2 sim only contract....

over 12-24 months its nearly always cheaper to buy the handset outright and then go on sim only plan.
Buy the phone, stick with you current sim only contract until it expires (im guessing soon if 60 is the buy out), then move onto Three Mobile.
Just picked up mine today at P4U. The guy told me no 16GB version so I was sad untill he scanned and showed on screen 16GB version. He looked at the box and YES! it was the 16GB version. So paid £169 for phone only (no contract, no PAYGO). And still got free back cover. Happy days (after 2 8GB's).

I'm using mine on OVIVO payg £20 for the SIM £15 you keep credit. You get 200 minutes 300 texts and 500mb every month and you NEVER need to top up again. Ive had it 6 or 7 months and other than buying SIM it's cost nothing!

Ovivo is a one-off charge of £20 for the sim and nothing more to pay, ever. The service is ad-funded. The ads are fairly obtrusive (every 3 pages or so) on your browser but are not tripped on other apps using your data allowance. Downside is that Ovivo piggybacks on Vodaphone so your data availability may be patchy here and there and speeds aren't great. Voice and Text are usually OK pretty much everywhere.
Outside of crazy misprices and huge cashback deals, it is the cheapest deal for low users.
