Quick question, if my G2 is temp rooted (overclocked) will I still be able to receive the OTA for gingerbread?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
As long as you reboot your phone to undo the temp root then yes you can get the OTA. Might even still be able to get the OTA with temp root, not 100% sure.

You can't get updates when rooted? even If your running the latest stock rom? I thought you could? To my knowledge you can.. but it would break your root?
Oh you can get updates alright! A lot of people do it by mistake and loose root. If you want to keep the option of temp rooting i would wait to update. Every OTA has the chance to be "unrootable" or at least have some new security features that take a while to break.

Yep, he's right. There is nothing about being rooted that stops you from getting OTAs. I am perm rooted and still get notifications for the OTAs. But it you get the OTA, you will lose root. And any update above 1.34 is not rootable, temp or perm.
I thought if you were perm-rooted, you cannot get any official OTAs. I had a permrooted MT3G and got a text from T-Mo notifying me of the upcoming Froyo update, but never received it. (Which is a good thing....) Others had told me notifications will come through, the OTA will not, unless the phone is unrooted.
So if I'm temp rooted with visionary I can still get the Gingerbread update I'm infering...

I believe you will, but you won't be able to temp root anymore after you update.

I was just about to go to bed, and my newly-exchanged Epic 4G just popped up an update screen asking me to update to DI18.
Sorry if this is duplicate news, but I heard that DI18 was delayed indefinitely, so I guess they're rolling it out now.
Anyone else getting it OTA yet?

Did anyone else get their phone un-rooted by the update? After the reboot, I tried launching SetCPU, and got an error message that root wasn't available & it was running in read-only mode.
I'm not sure whether I should be happy that I didn't have to unroot it first to get the update, or furious about an OTA update unrooting what was (I thought) a permanent rooting.

The word "permanent" is used very loosely, so I've learned.

I'm rooted and I still don't have the update. I got the D107 right off the bat. I was starting to think I needed to unroot to get it.

I've been getting prompted all morning to update, haven't done it yet though as I am rooted. But yes, it will come to you if you're rooted
Confirmed that the update is rolling out. It's best to go way of manuel update with a rooted phone though.

Question is pretty straight foward. Do I have to unroot? Do I lose root if I update and have to wait until the real froyo is rooted?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Very quickly (perhaps hours) after the official Samsung update becomes available OTA, one of the developers here will surely post a stock rom for Froyo that is already rooted and Clockwork Recovery ready. There will probably be versions flashable by both Odin and Clockwork. Custom roms will be updated soon after that.
To actually answer your question you would most likely be safe with just using odin back to an older build 2.1 then let the ota take over after you boot in to your homescreen.
However, answering your question completely. Losing root is a big maybe better yet a most likely. There is a root already out that i'm almost positive will work with the official 2.2 also though.
What if I just want to update to froyo using my phone and then root later?

That would be a bad idea because it's possible that samsung/sprint will have patched all the currently known root exploits. Most likely there will be a flashable zip available on xda within hours of release that will let you maintain root. The froyo update can be altered easily to maintain root but if you use it unmodified to update and then expect to reroot you will likely be screwed.
So far I have yet to flash one OTA that has intervened with root...though doesn't the exploit effect ADB which google needs to fix..I dont think its that simple to just patch up..
If someone is rooted but has not modifed their phone in any way or removed any stock apps, would they still be able to receive OTA?

There have not been any major OTAs yet so I don't see why that would be much of an argument that this huge OTA won't kill root. We had OTA's on the hero that preserved root and others that patched it. If you want to go ahead and take your chances with the OTA be my guest, but I was just trying to let the OP know that the risk to reward ratio is way to high in my opinion.

The ops question is whether or not the OTA would not work if he is rooted..similar to removing stock apps..hence I answered based on that, not maintaining root...

Yes u will still get ota and it should work fine. U might need to reroot after but that's all. The 2.2 ota might break root on ur current setup, but I don't think the update will patch the root exploit so u should be able to run the same oneclick and get root again.
how about we wait till it happens? it could all change depending on what the OTA update does to our phones. The advice has always been wait ... Wait.. and wait.. when it is safe then do the OTA.

He was asking a lot more than if he would get the OTA. I answered his question and gave some advice. You chimed in with some crap about never having lost root with an OTA. That was crap advice so I responded.

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update on 21st? If so, how do i get back to root? Sorry for newb question.
First u probably won't get the ota cuz u are rooted ......u need to odin back to di18 stock for u to get the update... or wait a lil longer to have one of ur devs. Cook some rom ready for our root phones... personally I won't go back to di18 ... but if our devs told us (which I don't think we need to) to do it.. then ill be happy to do it...
And to get root back from 2.2 do the same method u did fro 2.1
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Is the OP on 2.2? I'm still on DI18, and it has been fine for me. I rooted, but that's it. Would I still get the OTA?
It was my understanding that you could get the OTA update while rooted, as long as it wasn't a custom ROM. Someone chime in?
Way to NOT search people, I mean seriously....
But anyway like the last half a dozen threads asking THIS EXACT SAME QUESTION, you cannot OTA unless you are on a stock rom with the stock recovery, if you don't want to revert then wait less than a day and it will be in flashable .zip form.
You should be able to get the OTA if you're rooted on di18 and still have stock recovery. The update will most likely break your root, though. All you will have to do to get root back is run the one-click.
Yes

Correct you will lose root but will get the update. You have to lose any roms also clockwork I think. Not positive so maybe someone else can comment on that.

Question: I used one click root, and it deleted the asphalt demo. Using root explorer, I reinstalled the stock app, but it gave me a notice that asphalt was still in the system apps. I know you need to have all the stock apps when updating, so will I have any problems?

Ya, as other users have said, 2.2 is stock so it should ova update but remove your root (was in thesame situation with my mytouch and 2.2). Of course just superoneclick after you update and you're good to go

My Atrix 4g is rooted on 4.1.57 and I am not seeing the latest 1.8.3 update. help!
Me either. I'm pretty sure its not because of root though since others with root have gotten the update
Thats what I was wondering. I was able to update with the root last time, I don't see why this would be different
So we need to unroot and then update ?
And then root 1.8.3 with Gingerbreak?
Nothing should effect your ability to see it. If you have one of the pseudo roms installed, that will prevent you from installing it, however.
I don't think we need to un-root to see the update - that really shouldn't effect anything. Once we get to 1.8.3 GingerBreak will root it fine, the issue is just getting to that point via OTA Update which we aren't seeing
no root here and I'm still not seeing it yet.
1.8.3 isn't live yet FFS. So much damn misinformation floating around.

Rolling out doesn't mean live for everyone. Also, this update isn't official until ken releases Gingerblur 3.0 anyway, since the stock experience is pretty much a joke.
Is GingerBlur the best rom? // easy to install/update?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Just flash the sbf it doesn't wipe any data of course im not running any mods or "roms" other than root. It did get rid of root though and running gingerRoot wiped my internal storage (like it said it would), but i backed that up no harm ;-)
So my area in NC is not "live" yet it seems.
Not live in Philadelphia either
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
The patch isn't live yet folks! It's still being pushed out in testing.
I believe it's not root, but deodexed files which cause issues with updating. People with root have managed to update, but people like me who had GreyBlur had to flash back to 4.1.26, update to 4.1.57, update to 4.1.83, then root and sideload again. Also, before rooting, it's adviseable to use Kennethpenn's deodex flash for 4.1.83 first.
rooted, running gingerblur 2.5.. no update available yet here in south Florida. not too concerned about it though.. i did the HUSPA mod & i'm content for now
Hello my name is Melvin. I have a HTC EVO 4G. I had previously done a temp. root with unrevoked. I had 2.1 OS, and i think i may have screwed up. I new the new 2.2 was available, so i unrooted (temp.)To get the new FOTA. Now im interested in a custom rom, (gingerbread-deck-evo). Im obviously new at all of this. So, tell me did i screw up?
Or can i still root with unrevoked since it was only a temp root for tether purposes?

well if in case you do have 2.2 Froyo then you're still in luck with the rooting option.
in most of our cases we were either dumb and did the OTA update to 2.3.3 or like myself got an upgrade from my LG Optimus S to the Evo 4g and BAMMMM 2.3.3 out of the box which blows.
on the other hand I have heard rumors that Google recalled the 2.3.3 updates and no the Evo's that havent updated wont receive the update yet and are still rootable.. Could it be that the reason to that is all the Talk about Google unrestricting the bootloaders?
