I just got two Streak 5's from Dell. One is "new" and one is "old". The old one was made in 10/22/10. I have no idea when the new one was made. The IMEI numbers are separated by about 2,000,000. Just looking in the battery compartment, the parts are different. The screen that comes up when you don't put the battery door on is different. The old one has text. The new one has a picture. More importantly, the old one boots and shuts down faster. The new one puts up the Dell logo right away. The old one takes a second. After that, there's no contest. The old one quickly moves to the rainbow flare Dell animation and then the Android desktop before the new one even makes it to the rainbow flare. On shut down, it's similar. The old one shuts down in about half the time as the new one.
Are the differences documented anywhere? Is one better than the other?

Both are running 2.2 factory fresh from dell. Dell opened up all the Streaks they had in stock and upgraded them. Obviously, the BIOS's are different, thus the different back door missing screens.
What does it say on the settings -> about phone screen?
and what is the model number on the back of the streak?
Old ones are usually M01M001
Mine also has a picture when the batt door is off and it's was purchased in december.
I believe that is controlled by the recovery/boot images, if you decompile them you'll find the batt images inside them.
Are they both on the same roms? It could be due to the fact one is signifigantly older then the other romwise

They are both M01M001. In the phone screen, they are both running the same version of Android, 2.2.2.

I'll look when I get home. Yes, they are both stock. I only cracked the seals this morning.
Hey, I noticed the same thing as OP. Left one is "new", right one is "old" stock. Both shipped with original 347. The "old" stock was sent as a replacement because my "new" one had a hiss noise in the background. Unfortunately the "old" one has the same hiss noise. I also tried 351, it also had same noise.
I didn't like the "old" one's screen colors. It's more dim and colors are less vivid. See the pics I have. "New" is on left, "old" on the right side.

My "new" one has streakmod for the recovery partition. I don't know if that has any effect on boot speed.
Is there a way to backup the recovery partition in fastboot from the computer side? I want the 347 recovery image, but it seems impossible to get. One other thing weird is that when I flashed the "new" to 351, somehow the recovery partition reverted back to 347, and I had so much trouble getting it to boot up. It finally worked with streakmod installed in the recovery partition.
Thanks for posting that. Dell must have sourced different LCDs. I quickly checked mine and my screens are the same. Whether they are both good or both bad, I don't know. That's definitely something to watch out for though. I've decided to keep my old one and send back the new one for no other reason than that it boots quicker.
I'm probably going to keep my original one which has a better screen. I tried to backup everything from the replacement which boots faster, and tried using fastboot to write over my original streak. I failed in writing system.img and userdata.img. I backup everything up by using ssh terminal as su, and using 'cat /proc/mtd' command.
There were
boot
system
recovery
recovery_bak
splash
userdata
LogFilter
oem_log
I recovered recovery.img and boot.img to the original 347 version now on my original. Then used system.img made from streakmod a while back. I wonder if I should try flashing the other files in my list.
So there is one other difference. The "old" one comes with a Class 2 SDHC card. The "new" one comes with a Class 4. Also, I think I figured out when these were made. My old one was made in Sept 2010. My new one was made in Jan 2011. The new one still smells... well new. The old one is no longer outgassing.
i dont know for sure but im guesing the new screens are stronger. originally alot of people where having problems with dell streak 5 screens breaking very easy, maybe dell had alot of complaints and started producing them with stronger screens

Well, I just got off the phone with T-Mobile, and they are sending me a replacement G1. Why? My G1 had a wobbly screen. I question whether this is really worth the hours of work I spent in rooting and customizing it and even adding on a ShieldSkin too. But, I know this sounds immensely stupid, but I feel pretty bad about it. Its as if I have bonded or something with my current G1. (and it isn't helping that I am listening to Halo by Beyonce on the radio while I am writing this). I have the choice however once the new phone comes, to choose not to keep that one, but the wobbly screen... is starting to annoy me even though it isn't that big of an issue.
must be the biggest sap on the earth. I went ahead and canceled the order a few minutes ago because I just felt too bad about it.
I hear ya...
My G1 has two dead pixels on the screen that I noticed the second day I had it. I thought about getting a replacement, but I just couldn't bring myself to part with it. I still have it, I just try not to look at the screen in that area when I watch movies or that part of the screen is black. I am actually not sure it would be such a big deal if it was easier to restore. My treo was awesome. Hard Reset, replace it? just hook it up, choose your user name and it was just like your last sync, but I hard reset my G1 once, and won't ever do it again. I had used my backup, thought that it would back up the apps (ie, information and applications) only to find out that it only backed up the app itself, I had to redo all the information in everything.
Well... all my Apps are on my SD card, and I am very familiar with rooting and could probably do it in under 30 minutes if I were to get a refurb phone from T-Mobile... I canceled the order only because, like you, I just couldn't let it go. But, I wonder if that is the right choice, because after looking through the service manual (oops!) I realized that the problem with my G1 really cannot be fixed by me... so I really don't know what I should do.
One thing you hadn't considered is that the screen on your replacement might be wobblier. It's unfortunate that htc went with this swivel-slide design as it joins the two halves very unsecurely. I fear that the problem is a design-level issue, so whether the replacement is better or worse is luck of the draw.

well i replaced my black g1 once because of that, but ive noticed, even when you get a new one, over the course of time (a few months) that damn screen will loosen up on you, its done it on both black g1's ive had, and both white g1's ive had
I was considering doing the same...ive only had my G1 for about 2 months now but from what the tmobile rep said they all do that...he showed me his and his does it worst than mine. seeing he could probably get his replaced faster than me but he still dealt with it just says its a minor design flaw..but im still 100% in love with my g1.
My phone started that loose jiggle thing..like when its closed it can separate from the body of the phone like 1/8th of an inch and it droops down lower than it used to as well. I've had mine since about October I think and it just started becoming loose in the last 3 weeks
Yes this is a problem with all G1s due to the swivel design.
An easy temp fix is to stick something (like leftover screen protector material or creatively folded one-sided tape) underneath the screen on the keyboard portion of the phone on the top right corner (if you're holding it upright).
Well, for now I've actually found a cure. What I've done is actually cut out paper in the shape of the arch where the screw is in, I put the paper arches that are slightly bigger than the arch itself in, making sure that it goes under the screw and it stays in. I did one piece of construction paper, and then another piece of construction paper with a layer of tape on it to help it slide better. Now my screen opens and closes tight! Here are some pictures:

No, look at the photo sharply, it has a "phone" button. The media player device has media player, video player etc instead
it is just a backplate
the entire front is our screen
there is no much of a case for the phone,
the case is just the back plate
the sides are just a bezel to clip on to the back plate
our phone is the slimest of all

Oh dear. I am so going to have to get this.
is really hard to see the buttons if they are black or white without a better quality picture
I can find plenty of front/back pictures but none of the side!
I also found this
So there are 2 possibilities of what the white version will look like!
is funny how many of the cell phone carriers will call minor things as "exclusive"
it's just a white shell
any one can get it from ebay retailers and choose the colour they want.
it's not so exclusive anymore to have white.
unless it has a White front plate
Ya cant see the power but the volume looks white it is hard to tell for sure.

Just to clear things up for you all curious about the new white Galaxy S.
It has a white battery cover and body underneath is white too.
I have just received my white Galaxy S and I could say it does look like an iPhone 3GS but it's far better than that.
My first impressions are good, especially for the GPS, but further testing will be done.
Hi, first post everyone Has anyone tested out the new white Galaxy S yet? I recieved one earlier this week from a well known company online(i already had it in black but wanted it in white) but when making a call there was like a humming/buzzing coming from the earpiece, thought it might be because the volume was on max but still the same problem, tried changing sim to no avail. I went to the shop the next day to return it and exchanged it for another one in the same colour, got home and it still has the same problem as first handset. So im wondering what it could be as i bought the first one online and the second one i recieved was instore so they cant be both from the same batch could they? Is it a software problem it came with Froyo 2.2 JPO? Dont know if its worth swapping for another one, really like the white though, any ideas anyone? Thanks alot.

Hi again, earlier today swapped the phone again and exactly the samem problem, im stumped, do you guys think it may be a software problem or a hardware problem with the white galaxy s's. Would appreciate any ideas especially if you own the white one. Cheers.
This is a seriously sweet little phone. There doesn't appear to be any other threads about it on XDA so I thought I'd start this one, and with some good news:
Universal Androot works.
/system is mountable as rw.

It's perfect for a bit of Pokémon
does anyone know if this will get at&t 3g?
AT&T have the Flipout which is basically the same phone with a weirder design.
Sad to say I might actually wind up returning the phone.
I LOVE the form factor and performance is good enough, but...
Theres 2 big issues
I can't keep an internet connection, it's constantly dropping and not getting picked up again unless I reboot or reactivate and deactivate airplane mode.
The colors on the screen are sooo washed out. It looks like 8 bit color, it look's like there's a bright version and dark version of each color.
This is a hard decision
-Mike dg
You're right, the terrible screen is my main problem with the phone... not having any internet connection problems though, that's odd.
sooo
do any roms work on the charm? it's technically a motorola device so i'm tempted to just try one of those roms but don't wanna brick it only a couple hours after buying it.
I don't think so, it's QVGA after all.

Oh it's QVGA? I was never sure. I like the Charm as a device, I just don't like Motoblur or Motorola for that matter. Motorola doesn't give a **** about non Americans, here's hoping someone finds a way to make a custom ROM for this device.
ugh, I think the Charm is a seriously ugly little phone. Terrible screen and crippled with Motoblur which makes it seriously lagged. No thanks.

Yeah the T-Mobile Charm is butt ugly, the Telus Charm however is much better looking- no bright green text on the keyboard and it's all black instead of that bronze/brown bezel. It's not THAT laggy, it's less laggy than the LG Ally/Shine Plus.
I rooted it and tried to checkout the recovery partition. I guess mounting it as yaffs2 wrote to it and now recovery won't boot. anyone able to make a NAND dump?
Normal system still boots fine, and /system is editable. It's just my first Android device since the G1 and I didn't play with it much so I was trying to see how things worked. Oops. I did a backup of several mtd partitions but I suppose after I broke the signature.
Any help greatly apprechiated. I even tried to see if I could edit the version string the device sends to motorola to check for updates to see if I could find the download URL... no luck there. arrghh. Sniffing the HTML request and resending it myself also came back as Unauthorized, weird.
edit: in a root terminal: "dd if=/dev/block/mtdblock5 of=/cache/recovery.bin" should be what i need...

That is the full flash, incase you mess up your phone you can fix it back to factory. Also, in case they later patch the root exploit, you can use this to downgrade and then root the phone.
I have an unlocked Telus Charm that was bricked, and I flashed it with the T-Mobile rom found at the link posted. They are the same phone, so I thought this would be fine to do, but I now have no service (actually, only extremely intermittent service—I've caught a few bars once) on my device (using a Fido SIM). Any ideas? Any source for an original Telus rom to try? Maybe someone would be willing and gracious enough to provide a Nandroid backup of a factory-state Telus Charm?? Thank you so much for any help!
So I don't not have my MT4G yet. Still have my MT3G chugging away. But I just ordered the 4 so i thought I would ask a couple of questions in preparation for mine arriving next week.
1st. How do you unlock the screen from standby? Is it the menu button like my 3g, & old g1, Or is it an awkward ass button in an annoying spot like the g2 (cant stand the unlock button up top on my wifes g2).
2nd. How bloated is the stock rom? I have seen reports of it being full of crap thats not needed & most of it not wanted unlike the g2 that has a very clean install. And if it is full of **** is there a good factory replacement rom (after rooting of course) that will still get updates & has all hardware working?
You can unlock via the button, or by pressing the track pad
As for bloatware, there is some, but you can always flash CM
Agreed. The power button and the trackpad will both unlock.
As for bloatware; I removed (froze in TB) all the games, my faves, friend stream, visual voicemail, swype and a few other small things.
Runs fantastic now.

right on.. So the biggest problem being the unlock is a non issue apparently. I wish it would work that way on my wifes g2.
As for the OS can you also remove the sence UI. I used it a while back on my g1 & honestly prefer the generic android interface.

mt4g has some bloat for sure. i removed faves/family app and widget, news app and widget, stocks app and widget, flickr, facebook, all of the stupid themes to setup the phone other than carrera, all of the stock wallpapers and ringtones, all of the yahoo crap, monopoly, asphalt 5 and some other stuff i dont remember. phones running great. i made a few of my own tweaks to it, but u can definitely remove the above crap safely with no issue. just make a backup first in case you need to send the phone back. on a sidenote, you said the g2 was a clean install. to an extent. i had a g2 as well and it was full of bloat, right on par with the mt4g. i mean 15 or so google apps preloaded on it, not to mention the rest. anyway though, i hope this helps
I'm with Wind Mobile (who's vague as an abstract painting about their release), but they're only giving out phones to new accounts.
The trick is to go to one of their corporate offices (which would be a "warranty repair centre") where they can't deny you a sale of said new device.
So, tomorrow, bright and early, this guy's going into town with the hopes that they have one in stock.
Wind doesn't lock their phones like other carriers do (not at all), so it's going to be interesting to see whether we can get full root on this thing or not (fingers crossed).
Who's going in on said device here in Canada?
Post phone lock states and whatnot to this thread! For science, and curiosity. :fingers-crossed:

Apparently the Wind shop closest to me is backordered on said G5 for at least one week, rep would not confirm anything else (still vague).
Roommate snagged one up at a Bell kiosk just as they got a shipment of camera modules in stock. He spent an hour there between the kiosk rep and on the phone with "customer loyalty" trying to get a better deal since he's been with them 10 years, and nothing came out of it other than the standard free attachment.
His phone warmed up a fair bit during initial setup and charging but he seems happy with it overall. His only gripe is -- why can't the camera attachment hardware buttons snap a photo while screen off?
I got mine - here in Manitoba.
Picked mine up earlier today with the cam plus module for free! I thought they were only giving these to those who re-upped for two years.

- But I did re-up. Sweet, fast phone with some refined MM goodness. Watch out for the edges of the screen protector.
The screen "tapers" or is slightly thinner at the edges/corners - looks like a recipe for frustration as the screen protector will not remain perfect for long. I noticed the after enabling Dev Options I have the "Enable OEM Unlocking" function. I have no illusions that anything would be this simple.....

my plan was to get the device as soon as it came out, but when I got our demo device in store, I put off my decision till hearing more about the HTC 10.
The things I have noticed with the demo at my store is
1: The module at the bottom does not line up with the device, it might not be lots but it is enough. Plus worry about the future if the gap will get bigger
2: Audio quality is really weak. After using the G4 for the last while, I find the G4 has better placement and a better speaker all together.
3: The phones "metal body" feels weird. It does feel solid but at the same time it does not. Hard to explain
Those are my main issues, now with the camera, I do like the idea with the wide angle lenses but i wish the dual lenses was to help with zoom. Also I wish they upgraded the 16MP shooter. Dont get me wrong, the sensor is great with the G4 and G5, but I would have liked to see it improved even more. One other thing I would loved to see is before the phone was even released, LG going to the different accessory makers to give them the module access so when the phone launched they had more modules.
I dont know, maybe I am just being nit picky but I think LG dropped the ball a bit on this one. My final decision will be when I get my hands on the HTC 10 and G5 at the same time.
Got mine on Friday morning. Comparing this with the G3, G4 and Note Edge I find this thing to be ultra fast. Camera is pretty good although bright, its very noisey. Audio quality is ok.
Waiting for a root method,. unlocked the oem part, hopefully we will see root soon, Cant wait to seeing v10 camera app ports and custom kernels with exposed stuff
