I'm also looking for some mods as I have just recently rooted my atrix as well.
So far I have done the Telstra mod --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049434&highlight=Telstra
although I found the thread a little overwhelming. I found a youtube video that walked me through it and now my download speed is 5280kbps and upload speed is 1210kbps!
An app that requires root that I downloaded today is pretty cool as well, its called Wireless Tether for Root in Market. Its free and it turns your phone into a wifi hotspot at the touch of a buton. Works great.

Well since you already took the plunge and rooted your phone, the very first thing I would suggest is to install CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
It's not really that hard to install, and once you do install it, you can then create a back up of your entire phone (much more than Titanium backup). It's kind of like a creating a windows system image. That way if you mess anything up in the future, you can always restore to your backup that you made. Plus most mods, roms and themes are now using CWM for installation. Just follow the directions, ask if you get stuck, and read the thread, and you should be ok.
After that I would also suggest that you download Root explorer and SQLite Editor from the market; they come in handy.
If you get these apps, you can manually do the following (I always manually do my mods for the most part):
How about free mobile hotspot?? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980636

download dolphin browser, set user agent to desktop
modded adobe flash, grab and extract the zip.
use root explorer or adb shell to:
move libflashplayer.so to your sdcard
rename libflashplayer.so in /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib to libflashplayer.bak.
move /mnt/sdcard-ext/libflashplayer.so to /data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/
power off/on the phone, fire up hulu on dolphin browser and you're set.

Ok, you can download root explorer and SQLite Editor in the market, you just have to be rooted to use them.
Here are my instructions for enabling flash w/ Dolphin HD Browser. As stated above, you need to go to the dolphin browser setting and set user agent to desktop mode and set enable plugins (under advanced) to always.

Didn't work for me. Hulu gives me a message that Hulu requires at least flash version 10.0.32... Was fun playing though. First time I've used root explorer. I'm impressed.

You need to install Adobe Flash from the market first... probably was uninstalled during gingerbreak or flashing sbf.
1) Uninstall adobe flash
2) reboot for good measure
3) install a fresh adobe flash from the market
4) Follow the instructions in the post, replacing the correct flash file and making sure the stock one was either overwritten or deleted.
5) reboot for good measure

Root Access, Can't Uninstall Bloatware

So I'm rooted on my Evo and as far as I can tell I've flashed the stock rom that should allow me to uninstall the bloatware, however, I dont see any uninstall options for that crap like facebook.
Anything I'm doing wrong?
I followed this guide to root and flash. I've tested my root using the "Terminal Emulator" and typing "su" and it returned a "#"
Thanks XDA, I love most of you
You know you need to uninstall from your computer using adb
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
I've installed Android Debug Bridge but I was under the impression that rooting my phone would allow me to do things on my phone, such as install and uninstall what I want.
Could you explain the process more or send me to a link that does?
If you want to do it in android you either need console program or a file manager. Root explorer us the best one and easiest. Looks just like a typical explorer, tap the rw/ro button for read only or read write and delete away.
You have to have completed the second part of unlocking nand. Otherwise your only option is using a computer and adb in recovery.
They dont make this easy do they? I would have figured Android to be very open for things like this, I'm starting to feel like I have to "jailbreak" again, only this time it's to remove crap.
This seems like so much work to get rid of facebook and sprint tv.
It took me 10 minutes total including the file downloads. Its a one time thing and there is a learning curve with any new platform.
Aridon, is there a free explorer you'd recommend? I dont mind buying software, just want to make sure I'm not mistaken before I buy something that is worthless to me.
You get a trial on any purchased software in android. After its installed if you go backto market and pull it up again there will be a refund option. So no risk. I think its for 24 hours.
As for a free one I'm not sure when I first started messing around with android I bought it because people said it was the best. I don't have any regrets.
Just remember to tap the top button for rw. Long press brings up options. Menu had an option for multiple file select and other goodies. its very powerful.
Aridon, thanks for everything, just 1 more question. I bought it, and the program is slick. I went to /system/app and deleted facebook, is that all I need to do?
Cause I still see it in the menu
I may have done a bad thing, my phone just reset itself.... I need a trainer to be with me at all times.
So after that restart, the files I thought I deleted are back.
Yes just go into system/app, make sure it says rw up top which means read write access, then select the file, general an .apk and .odex and delete. Not all files have both and some roms don't have any .odex files.
I'll be up for another 30 min or so and I'll keep an eye on this thread in case you have any questions.
Ok that means the second part where you unlocked nand wasn't done correctly. Make sure you go slow, download the files again because they are different and watch for errors.
The only hiccup I had was when I copied the new recovery and other files to my sd and tried to adb push it gave me some kind of can't find file error. I had to reboot and it was fine. It send after the boot I could go back in and adb the files it must have been some kind if a refresh error on the sd while in recovery.
Edit. I'm responding on my evo and in bed so excuse errors.
Go to sleep, I'll resume this thread tomorrow if I'm still having trouble. You Sir, are a life saver. This is why XDA is THE FORUM for anything mobile.
Good night then.
I know it can be a bit of a pain to do this but I promise you it will be worth it. Things have only just started and the custom roms are already awesome. Once we get the source code things are going to be insane over here.
Got it! Everything is working well. However, now my voice mail says it can not download messages.... Rebooted and it's all good.
Facebook and Twitter Free! Also, no more Sprint crap.
Life is good, again.
Another terminal substitute is Android Commander, out is naturally a file explorer that allows transfer and deletion off whatever you want. This program runs in your pc.
As Was mentioned above, root explorer is the easiest way.

So with Android - one simply deletes the application rather than un-installing it? That doesn't cause problems with the system thinking the application still exists somewhere?

It depends on where it is installed. /system/apps do not allow you to just uninstall you have to delete it. One this is done its gone. Obviously if you delete phone.apk you are going to have issues or if you delete a process that is running you may get a force close but for the most part unless you delete an app like people or dialer you are fine. After the single force close everything works properly.
Some custom roms moved programs to /data/app which allows them to be removed the other way.

a quick little trick to get some nice apps that samsung only gives to i9000

heres a way to get a couple nice apps for free that samsung thinks the i9000 guys should have but not us (asphalt 5, krazy kart racing), theres also an updated version of task manager, and a few others that i wasnt interested in. if your using your stock build.prop file and open the samsung apps, it will show an updated version of our camera app but i have not updated it yet but i will report back when i do. but to get all the nice apps, you have to temporarily replace your build.prop file with the one ive attatched. also download the samsungapps.apk ive included and put it onto your sd card and install it. download the build.zip ive attached and extract the build.prop file to your desktop.
so now with root explorer, go to /system and long press and copy your build.prop file and paste it to your internal sd to back it up. long press again and rename it to build.prop.bak or whatever you want.
now put the build.prop that you got from me and put it on your sd card. now go back into root explorer, long press on the build.prop that you just put on the sd and copy it. now you want to paste it in /system and click yes to overwrite the one you have. reboot your phone. under settings- about phone there should be some of the version info changed and all that(thats all this does). now if you open the samsung app store that you installed you will see a few apps available for free. install what you want, then just delete your modded build.prop on your sd card(or save it to your pc or whatever in case they add some more stuff so you can do this again) rename your original build.prop.bak to what it is supposed to be(build.prop) and do the same-copy this file, paste it in /system to overwrite the modded one, reboot, and now your back to how you were just with some nice free games or whatever else you downloaded. everytime you switch between these files for downloading things from the samsung app store, go into applications, find the samsungappstore.apk and delete the data and cache so it will reset to your current version.
this is a long post but it takes less than 5 min.lol
you could also do this with adb but if you dont know how to use adb do it this way.
This is cool, I didn't really know what the build.prop file did, little things like this help me put the pieces together. I also notices that swype won't work with your build.prop file. Maybe why it won't work in ported i-9000 and vibrant roms that I've tried.
Also the proper version of asphalt is great. Hardware acceleration makes a difference. The lighting effects are much beyer than the version in the market.

ya and its were like the red headed step child to samsung compared to the i9000, but thats to be expected.

You have to go to settings/applications/Samsung apps and autorize new application notification in I9000. When you are notified that the application is ready for you to install, you will be able to click and install. Please note asphalt is a huge file and will eat up a lot of download time. It is strongly recommend you use wi fi for asphalt and not packet notification.
What version is the task manager that is included in this? My phone has version 1.11
Also, any difference in the camera update?

The system was authorized for notification, the app did fully download through WiFi (all 70 MB of it), it did ask me to install, and I installed it successfully without incident (which is what my post already implied). It is shows up in the application list, but when I start it, there is a dialog box that pops up in the background and closes before I can read what it says. After this, all that starts is the intro video, which actually plays through the phone's movie player application. The game itself never launches. Have you actually spoofed your Captivate to be an i9000, downloaded Asphalt 5 through SamsungApps, and then run it successfully. If you have a market bought full version of the game, that doesn't count. I am thinking that this game has some additional security measures that prevent it from being launched.

[Q] Adding browser back to [or fixing] a rooted Nook Simple Touch

Sorry for the total noob question, but here goes. I have rooted my NST, using the following instructions: http://tinymicros.com/wiki/NOOK_Simple_Touch_%28NST%29_Rooting_For_Practiscore Forgive the external link, I just wanted to be clear on where I am at.
If this isn't acceptable, apparently the source of the info is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and I used the "the 'Normal + Xorzone's mods + adb Wifi' build "
Practiscore works flawlessly and my nook does what I need it to do. Now I have been thinking that it would be cool to be able to surf the web or at least be able to use the internet over wifi to load apps without having to load it on the SD card manually.
Right now, when I open the browser, it will actually open www.google.com when I set it to the home page but then crash whenever I try to do anything - even just clicking on the search box. The fact that it will actually open google, tells me my connection is working, but either the root process broke the browser, or something else is wrong. I can also open the market and get it to show me some apps, but it won't let me search or surf to any app. Searching just hangs and displays nothing.
I've tried searching but I haven't had any luck in picking the proper search terms to get an answer, and for some reason there is a script running wild on this page that refreshes it every 2 seconds interrupting what I am doing. That problem is probably on my PC, but firefox is what I have.
Ok, I got some things to install by d/l'ing the APK's directly to the SD card on a PC. I still haven't gotten the app store to work, or google.
The app store search will not work on your nook touch, the only way to install apps are either sideloading them or installing them wirelessly using google play on your computer.
You may want to use Opera Mobile instead of the basic browser, it would be easier than getting the stock one working.

Ok, this thing is just not working, everything I try in the market or using the browser just crashes. I downloaded the opera mini, but I didn't get an apk, so I have no idea how to install the extracted files. Most of the apk's I have found to put on here don't work either and just crash. I cant even get hangman or a crossword to load for pete's sake...
Did you root it to run Practiscore on?
If not, I'd suggest restoring your backup, upgrading to 1.2.1 firmware, then using NookManager with NTGAppsAttack (see the Nook Touch Android Development Forum here on xda). That worked just fine for me. But I don't need to run Practiscore.

Yes, the link in the OP was what I used.
1. NTGAppsAttack - working google play
2. use SeachMarket.apk to look for APK's in Google play.

3. Use Opera Mobile instead of Mini.
4. To manually install .apk (without using ADB)
- put it on your uSD.
- open it using Relaunch or any other file browser that you use.

Now all I have to figure out is how to get rid of those extra apps [that suck and don't work]

Android 4.3 Needs To Bring Back The Default Browser!

I love my new Nexus 7 but the lack of the default Browser is rather painful for me to do without. Does anyone else miss that Browser? The ability to never see the address bar as it frees up screen real estate as well as the Quick Controls, which I find are superior to any browser on Google Play, are the main reasons I want to see this browser back on Android 4.3. I already tried to install BrowserGoogle.apk and it just will not install. I wonder is anyone up to making this work for 4.3?

You can't just install the standard browser like other apk's:
Once you have root, remount /system rw.
Copy the browser.apk I linked before to /system/apps
Rename browserproviderproxy.apk and .odex to something else
Ensure the permissions on browser.apk are 664 (rw-rw-r--)
Reboot
ES file explorer can be used for everything if you're not comfortable doing it from a shell session.

Im not sure I follow your logic.
The APK it installs is from 4.0 for the browser and the Flash is from ICS....What difference does it make if the app to install it is for 4.2.2..Almost every single App I have installed from playstore is from 4.2 or bellow....Not to mention Most of these peeps here wont even want to change the name of an app, then place it in a folder, then change its permissions. Hell just the fact that this thread was started shows that most won't even search for the how to.

I'm not talking about the app to install it, I'm talking about the version of browser.apk the app installs. I didn't realise it was the 4.0 version of browser installed, I assumed it would be the version taken from aosp 4.2.2 and would be updated to install the version from 4.3 shortly. Why isn't it installing the latest version of browser available? Only reason I can think of is for compatability maybe?
Similarly, I would always reccomend downloading the latest version of flash directly from the adobe website than using some apk posted on xda, personally. If people can't be bothered and the shortcut methods work fine for them then great! But there's no harm in giving the info on how to do it manually. Knowledge is power!

Ahhh gotcha. :good:
I appreciate it guys but when I was trying to root, I got my new Nexus 7 stuck on Fastboot mode screen. It's no longer recognizing USB through the PC. I can't pull the battery, power + - vol doesn't work. Is this thing bricked?

Sorry... I had to hold power + - vol a little while longer. It's up now. Thanks for your help. I'm going to do some thorough research so I can properly root this thing.

Install the flash player attached after.

You are welcome.
This is perfect thanks for posting. Sadly I have three websites I use for work that are flash intensive.
So much flaming, so little time.
Take it elsewhere kids. Unless it relates to helping the OP get an AOSP browser, do not post it.
Do you know anything about the AOSP Browser Installer in the Play Store ?
What is this browser ?
I installed it and it took 5 minutes the the device to reboot ... then it seemed to factory reset my device kinda ... all the google apps were older from when I updated recently. Also, every app that had been purchased was gone ... I had to re-install and it gets worse before I could re-install I had to go into the /data/data folder and delete the paid app's folder then it would install ... not sure why this happened it was a pain to do this, is their any tool that could have fixed this ?
Google should have never removed it from these devices on the stock ROMs. Chrome even today is still not as smooth.

Cannot install apps on rooted NSTG

iOS have rooted my NSTG using glownooter and all went well in that it boots and everything is there as expected. Unfortunately I can see no way of getting apps on it. I have tried the following
-installing using browser, it crashes
-Opera mini does not work
- installing new browser, none available in market (I'm sure I've found dolphin there previously. )
-Amazon AppStore, does not work
-gmail attached app, cannot download
-email app, crashes
-google drive, box, Dropbox links in gmail, launches browser which crashes
-super manager crashes
I would really appreciate any help, all I really want is the kindle app working as the nook store is no more.
Thanks in hope
Frank

Not for installing an app. AFAIK, the last working version of Opera Mini is attached below.

Better than Opera Mini (IMHO) although more ancient, is the Opera Mobile I've attached below.

No, that is dead. Either uninstall it or disable the app (as for Browser, above)

OK, well, you've tried just about everything that can't/won't work
How about something that will? Copy the apps onto your SD card and locate them with a file manager (nice older version of ES File Explorer attached below). Tap the apk file and it should install. You can do this with the Kindle app as well. Unless you've got GApps working and can access the Market via the SearchMarket app, side-loading like this is your only recourse (well, almost....there's also ADB).

Hi thanks for the comments. I would love to get ES file explorer on the Nook but I have no way of installing any apks so I can't see how I can side load the apps. Previously I have got the first app from the market and gone from there but there does not seem to be any apps I can use to do this. I'm guessing I'll have to investigate ADB.
Thanks again

So there is a bigger issue. I'm not familiar with glownooter but I did look it up. Whether you used that exact same version or not, it sounds like you have the makings of Market access, not to mention abdwireless. If you can get the Market up and running then you can download any old file manager that will install just to get going, or you can get apps directly from the PlayStore (though the pickings are somewhat limited for Android 2.1
So what's the real issue? Have you tried the GApps sign-in procedure? Did it not work? The glownooter package is supposed to include Market and then you get SearchMarket from the PlayStore once you're signed in. From there, the rest is easy.
If you don't have any apps on your NTG like Market, or YouTube, or GMail, then something is not right about your rooting process.

Ok, patience appeared to be the key. I checked after a couple of days and the ntg had appeared as a device on the play store which it wasn't originally. I now have a file explorer and Amazon. Unfortunately Amazon won't download any books but one thing at a time. Thanks for the help, Frank.

Good! Yes, the PlayStore dance takes time for whatever reason.
If by "Amazon" you mean Kindle, then you will need to update your certificates in order to interface with the books you have stored with Amazon. See here for more info.

Hi, I'm a very new user here. How do I rename this like you suggest? I've tried doing it through the adb shell (via ADB Konnect utility) and it complained about being read-only (yes, I am root and even su'ed to be sure)
# mv Browser.apk Browser.apk.bak
failed on 'Browser.apk' - Read-only file system
Then, I installed ES File Explorer (v3.1.0.1) and tried doing it through that interface, where it complained simply "Task failed". Then, I thought "wait...I should make sure I have root permissions given to this app", found the setting, got root, tried again and got a message indicating success! Except...the file didn't actually get renamed.
I'm out of ideas and time for now. Help is greatly appreciated!

I have not used adb to rename, but I have used both Root Browser and ES File Explorer to rename apk files (never know when you might want it back....) without any problem. It should not be necessary to change the permissions on the system/app or data/app folders--or the apk files themselves. The file explorers do require root access, but it sounds like you have that covered.
I am a little distrustful of the newer ES File Explorers, as they are mucho bloated and troublesome to use on the NST/NTG sometimes. Maybe try the one attached to this post? It's what I finally settled on (but you have to go to SearchMarket first and mark ES FE as "do not autoupdate" or the older version will just be wiped out).

Thanks. Yeah, I tried that one out earlier, but I couldn't see right away how to browse around in / like I could easily do in a 3.* version of ES FE which I had tried out first. Will play around with it more now...GOT IT!
I'm also intent on disabling the Amazon Appstore now, but I can't figure out which apk(s) to rename. Should I just do a regular uninstall then?
While at it, I disabled some of the apps recommended here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933615) because I saw how damn much the phone utilities were killing my battery life!!
So I can't find the thread where I found this earlier, but here are a ton of older versions of that apk if anyone things that's useful: http[://]es-file-explorer.en.uptodown[dot]com/android/old (sorry, about the [dot] stuff, as a new user I can't post external URLs yet).

It's something like com.venezia...blah-blah...near the end of the app list in data/apps. Just uninstall it. When it was still working back in the old days it was always giving me trouble with nags of one sort or another. It's just one piece and useless so might as well uninstall.

You might be surprised about some of the "phone stuff" and power consumption. The mechanism for reporting battery use on the NST leaves something to be desired. See my post here. In any case, the actual phone.apk is responsible for android media volume control so if you ever pursue USB Audio, you'll need it. The telephony.apk, not needed.

There it is...ended up being called com.android.venezia.apk. I deleted it from the ES FE interface after failing to be able to do it through adb uninstall on my computer. Still need to figure out how to get write permissions there, apparently.a
