For all with locking issues, fc's, and other annoying stuff... - Epic 4G General

I would just like to put this out in the open for those with serious issues with ec05. My epic recently was going absolutely bonkers. From randomly frequent freezes to framework fc's. My phone now is in perfect working order. What I found that screwed everything up for me was the stock odin of ec05. The version I had (EC05 FULL) was causing these issues. If you have the same issues try this...
Odin back to eb13 and upgrade to ec05 ota instead of flashing ec05 from the get go. What I found was that the version I had must of been modded in one way or another. Not only that but when I redownloaded ec05 full I couldn't extract with winrar. I get getting a file is corrupt message. Anywho if your having issues try the above. After the above I have absolutely no issues. No freezes, no fc's, and my battery life is back to top notch and the phone flies! Cheers!

I've been running midnight 5.2 with journaling on @1.2ghz since then with absolutely no issues whatsoever. Just an fyi if your curious...

Im gonna say a mojor percentage of problems are coming from the kernels,I am now using DRockstar's kernel, and no problems at all. So for me its either "clean kernel 1.02" or "Twilight Zone 1.0.4" for the most stable ROM. I dont disagree with what you have said, but I think the bigger problem is the kernels.

Im sure it is too. Not negating that. A software issue wouldnt make my screen artifact and turn into a dark yellow haze. Lol I swear I thought my phone was done. At one point the phone locked up and the screen went black with just 3 blue and red pixels. After flashing my phone a crapload of times since ec05 came out this has been the surefire way to get ec05 to work properly. From a stock rom standpoint atleast. I believe we still don't have the official ec05 tar right? If so next time you decide to flash from scratch try this method instead. My phone hasn't run this well since acs 2.1 shuriken. That says ALOT lol

The only real stock EC05 was put out by K0nane and ACS. All other tars were modded and prerooted.

Just odined back to 2.1 and it runs great.

+1 on 2.1 for me
No I love dk28 with ext4 and bonsai rom with no journaling. Phone has never been this fast before. Also 1 meter locks on gps and even in my house. Never got a lock on eclair before. I'm never going back to eclair. I'm gonna update to the official froyo manually.
Guys,
What do you mean by better? GPS fixed with better battery life with snappy speed than when it was launched or are you refering to it being more reliable than DK28 leaked froyo?

You are def. Right. By the way I love your theme mystery. I've showed it to a lot of people that don't have epics and they all love it. Thank you for everything that you and to all the developers. Without you there wouldn't be a point in rooting our epics and we wouldn't know how.
Sorry I don't agree. 2.1 is buggy because Samsung doesn't have it set up right. DK28 runs smother, faster, and gps performs much better.
I agree with the OP. GPS is the only real world improvement that the dk28 roms have brought me. I like to play games on my Epic, and the graphics performance is just not up to par compared to di18. I still get the occasional lag and jitter in the UI also. But I need gps for one of my jobs so I'm gonna keep running dk28 roms untill sprint drops the official froyo.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
No way DK28 is much smoother and better battery life; however, I have not hd much luck with the custom DK28 roms. Sticking with stock DK28.

I'm back on 2.1 because I finally got win7 on my comp and wanted to test odin. Had problems reoding dk28 so I went back to di18. Works great.

Yeah, I went back to di18 every time. Some of my dk gripes were the checkerboard and flash in stock browser and being unable to successfully put a custom hosts file in it and it works. I left out of frustration and went back to di.
Quantum Rom working great for me on DK28. The only thing I am not pleased with is the inability to tether w/ infrastructure mode.
Im on my second dk28 rom ive actually had running for more than an hour, midNIGHT 2.6 w EXT4, and Im pretty happy with it. I have seen for a split second the checkering on the browser, i think, but I was wondering, is that just what the browser does when its having issues loading, i.e. an annoying, but normal issue? I did not like it on some of the early dk28's, but that was with a lot of other kinks that appear to be worked out. Also, has anyone who went back to di18 noticed the keyboard dropout issue??? I never noticed it myself, but as someone else had pointed out it may be software, I chalked it up to 2.1 builds... but I THINK i have noticed it, maybe 10 times, but could just be looking for any little thing and actually missing keys. Maybe I dont text-type as fast as others, idunno. Also, w my third epic (second a replacement that fc'd on everything, but was the most solid physically built ive held), I noticed that hardware quality varies a lot, I expected this with the slider, but maybe extends to the kb? Anyways, di18 feels stable, but I wonder if its just the feeling that it is 'official'...
Good info. I've run quantum, bonsai (I prefer it leafless), midnight, ee all are amazing I just always find my self back at stock. Oh yea cyanogen nightly's are fun too.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I've tried dk28 twice now with different roms and went back to di18 each time. Besides the gps "issue" di18 is the most solid phone build I've ever used.
Dk28 has the last.fm skipping, considerably bad keyboard lag/missed keys, captivate button lag, touches to the screen lag randomly.
Dk28 to me feels exactly like what it really is. A "good enough" leak, but it is far from polished.

Just to toss this into the mix, I've had this happen on stock Eclair as well (rooted but that's it) even. It only happens randomly/occasionally, but it does happen enough to be noteworthy.
I have since flashed back to stock 2.1 and have not had this happen at all. Overall my 2.1 stock experience has been fantastic with no little bugs or hangups that I experienced on DK28. Hopefully the eventual stock 2.2 doesn't have issues.

Bonsai 3.0.1 Users Beware of...

using themes just yet. This may affect Syndicate frozen 1.0.1 ROMs as well. When I tested a few of the Themes for both Bonsai 2/3 and ACS Frozen 1.0 on Bonsai the TWS bug showed up and went away after restore. This also occured with the AOSP lockscreen. They all work fine by appearance but if the TWS bug shows up there may be other issues to arise.
I'm sticking to the basic theme for now because this ROM is flawless for me and I just wanted to warn others of my findings without trying to do it in multiple threads.
Yes, it does effect any rom that uses the newest CIQ method. Wait until the Theme is updated as flashing themes over these new NO CIQ roms may cause instability.
ugh, after the last restore the TWS came back... maybe it has nothing to do with themes after all. It wasn't there before...
is this thing ever going to die?
OK, Someone else can answer this, but I have no idea. The TWS is gone now. I'm not sure if the battery cache in CWM holds that information and it has to be reset. It may not have anything to do with it.
But after restarting again, the TWS is gone without having to do the "airplane mode fix"
So, it most likely was the themes causing it.
When flashing themes you only need worry if it changes any jar file as that is where the ciq stuff is, I believe atleast.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong anyone

That is exactly what I did when gmail FC'd on me and have no issues now.
Gmail FCs on me every time I flash bonsai (.0 or .1) but then I just install transparent gmail and there's no problems and its prettier anyway.
Using Bonsai 3.0.1 with honeycomb theme no problems, but I haven't found a boot animation that doesn't cause all sorts of FCs. Stock bonsai boot is pretty, but it doesn't match my color scheme.

Syndicate Frozen lags, what could it be?

Ok I posted a few weeks back about my phone being a little laggy when I first started it up but it started becoming progressively worse even with closing all running apps in the settings>applications>running services thing cause I thought there might be a lot running but that didn't help.
So last night thinking a fresh start would help I reflashed the newest syndicate frozen rom and my phone is still being a little slower than I would want not to mention slower than everyone elses reviews. And on top of that my battery drain iis pretty bad (dropped like 20% in the last hour with moderate use).
So I was just wondering if there's any way to pinpoint what might be causing this (like certain apps running) or a way to try and correct it? Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Not sure what it is but ill give my experience. A while ago I had the same issue. Turn out there was something wrong with the stock ec05 tar. I had a modified version and didn't know it. No matter what rom I flashed it didn't perform well. Also, I use my epic is my main form of internet use. Most roms and mods I dl str8 to my phone. Well, it also turns out that downloading roms str8 onto the sd card game me some errors. Probably because of some fault in the data. Redownload everything you need. When you odin back to ec05 format your sd card also. Should do the trick unless there's something wrong with your phone.

One thing that might help is if you have Titanium backup or Mybackup Root freeze DRM content and SNS services. Also are you running setcpu? If so try removing it to see if that helps. If it does then your setting are off and you need to tweak your settings. Do you have journaling enabled? Another thing what kernel are you using? I liked Vision kernel over Twilight some have also mentioned Genocide being good also. I am NOT saying Twilight is a bad kernel just it does give some people issues with certain setups.

Thanks for the response. I already had drm frozen, just froze sns (what does that do?), so we'll see how that helps. I also uninstalled setcpu to see if theres any improvement there.
Im running twilight kernel, maybe if the problems persist ill have to try out another one. With kernels all I do is flash? Will any info be lost or wil I have to wipe etc? Or just flash and your good to go?

Also, don't use twilight 1.1 that came with srf. I've tested it and it has several issue's. Use genocide. (Genocide 1.1 was posted on pages 195-199 I believe)

Thanks everyone! I just rewiped and reflashed the SFR 1.1.1 again and it seems to be working fine so far.
I haven't installed all the apps I had before and don't plan on it because I have all I need on it now and it could have been an unnecessary app causing problems or just a bad wipe but either way so far so good.

Ok so I reflashed and it was working perfectly, buttery smooth no lag nothing. I was completely happy. I charged my phone and used it until about 10% turned it off and replaced the battery with a 100% charged one I have as a backup.
Once I turned it on it began lagging again, as well as draining the battery quicker than before and on top of that it did an old problem I had that I didn't mention before which when you turn off the screen it turns back on showing the lock screen then goes off after about 5 seconds.
I have no idea what it could be and why it magically came bac after a shut down/reboot :/
Also if I switch to the genocide kernel do I have t reinstall all my apps again or does it just flash and keep all info? Do I have to wipe data/cache?
Thanks again

I have been using [ROM]ACS ICS v6 (Now with moar gps! (and a theme)) [eh17]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295515
I have also been using the above ROM with the following kernel
[KERNEL][ROOT][GB][EH17] nubernel-2.6.35_v0.0.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326679
Before you apply the following theme, that installs lockscreenmods amongst other really cool items (reboot, recovery, etc), download the .zip to your machine and open the .zip and remove the /system/apps/phone.apk from it before flashing to your phone:
[THEME][EH17][ACS] ░▒▓█4.0 ICS█▓▒░ [lockmod]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320894
With everything above, I have a stable GB ROM with no reboots and no FC on phone calls ending. Battery life has been slightly better than SFR 1.2 and I use this as my daily driver with 0 issues (other than some lock screens showing erroneous battery details, but if that's the only thing so far then so be it.

Ha ha. Plus one on this combo. I didn't use the theme though I might try now with the step to remove phone from the zip. I've been using Ripple Lock and loving it with the theme and it works like a charm.
Kinda insulting that samsung just can't get it right but the developers here can. So far I been testing the hell out this rom. Not one single problem yet. Even the boot up time is faster

+2. I've been using the same setup since V6 was released (sans 6 lock mod) and no reboots, no FC's, and the keyboard skip is gone!
One weird issue I've been having lately- (might not be ROM related)- SMS messages are not coming through. Or I'll get replies to SMS' I've sent like 3 days later. Probably more Sprint than anything else....

I've been thinking about taking this for a drive; I used bamboozle EF02 and it was pretty nice, I went back to EC05 because of the reboots using gb leaks (tried EE03,EF02, EG22, EH06 and EH17) and well my battery life with this ec05 rom is nuts.
I really like marcusant's stuff. He is young but talented.
I'm really digging the whole blue theme. Still so far no random reboots. A few days before flashing this rom I would get about 50 reboots a day. Really frustrating now my phone seem to be running like a new right out the box phone
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
I also installed this and wow, it feels like I just got a new phone.
I also dig the blue and dark theme. This stockish ICS theme is really what I was looking for.
So far the phone is snappy and GPS works, and looks so bad ass.
On the side note, I can't go back to stock EC05. I went back to froyo to get stable GPS but the UI was laggy compared to gingerbread. The froyo for Epic is so not optimized I had to go back to leaked gingerbread.
