I installed a new 32gb class 10 sd. It shows up in Astro file manager as being available. However, none of the many APP2SD programs I have tried allow me to move my apps to the card. What am I missing here? Do I need to format the card first and if so, how do I do that?
Apps2Sd will put apps in the "SdCard" directory which in the Iconia is actual internal memory.
You can only use your card for extra storage (like music/videos)

So, where in the file system is the actual SD card?
It's under /mnt/external_sd
the USB is under /mnt/usb_storage
They will not show up with the USB connector cable attached, but can be accessed through ADB on the host computer.
I think you are meant to actually pull the card and put stuff on it then put it back in the tablet.
Not all media players will see the card because of this name change in Honeycomb.

In the "First start information" document that came with my Acer, it states:
Transferring files from a microSD card (optional) to your PC
Remove the card from the tablet and use a card reader or USB adapter to access the card as an external storage device.

I put something into it and only things in this folder i can see on my pc why? I would like to copy photos or music directly to the sd card...
can anyone help me?
If you try to access your SD card from the External drive folder called "SD" it won't work.
There are 2 drives actually for this phone when you plug it with USB, one is the External sdcard (the 6gb partition that comes with the phone) and the other is the microSD card. Both are in My Computer.

Im not using a USB Cable to acces the sd card, I put the card out of the phone into a cardreader and then I cant see any files on the card only the files in the folder called "sd" on the card but in the phone I see there more folders on the root of the sd card.
On the phone I see following folders in root of the sd card:
albumthumbs
Android
bluetooth
DCIM
....
and one folder called "sd"
Everything in this folder "sd" I can see on my pc but not the folders on the root of the sd card?
why?

That's because those files and folders you only see on your phone are in fact part of the internal memory and NOT from the microsd card.
The microsd card is in fact the folder named SD.
Your best bet and it is the one I personally use is to leave the card in the phone and attach your phone to the PC via USB.
Once you have 'mounted' the phone you will then see 2 (two) directories.
One directory will be the internal memory (roughly 5.6GB) and the other the microsd card.
On mine it shows as drives E & F.

Sorry on my phone it isnt that way.
On the root of my phone there is folder called "sdcard" in this one I can find this folders:
albumthumbs
Android
bluetooth
DCIM
....
and one folder called "sd"
only things in the folder "sd" are visible on my pc. for ex. if i take a pic and store it by the cam app to the sd card its saved into the sdcard\dcim\ and it is on the sd card. when I put the card into the pc Im not seeing anything... if I go with astro and copy the pic from sdcard\dcim\ to sdcard\sd\PIC and put the sd card into my pc Im seeing on the sd card ONE FOLDER called PIC?!?!
Ive just checked it with the usb cable and its the same thing, if you plug it in you get two drives one with the folders
Android
bluetooth
DCIM
....
and another...
BUT BOTH ARE THE SD CARD, try to connect the phoen without a installed sd card to a pc you will see nothing...
And this point I would like to change.

You are misunderstanding what I am saying.
The folder sdcard is the internal memory
Whilst the folder sd is the MicroSD card.
If yours is different then I don't know what is going on with your Galaxy S

Yes, I agree... it is confusing.
On a Windows Mobile device the SDCard relates to the external SDCard.
With the Galaxy S, because it has an 8GB storage card (of which you only get to use around 5.6GB) it treats this as the SDCard and of course anything saved does indeed go to this storage.
Looks like we will have to wait for Froyo to arrive on the Galaxy S before we can download direct to the MicroSD card (which as we know is indeed buried inside SDCard/SD.
I just wondering if I got it wrong. I have a sd card in the a500 which I can see when accessing via Astro file. I cannot though see the sd card when connecting the tablet with the pc. Is this correct or am I missing something?
I have the same problem. It works on my Samsung Captivate running 2.2 but not my A500?
I read that this is by design and may be fixed in some update (some day)
I hope it soon!!
CW
Same with my A500. I get a "write protected" message but no way to change the permissions on the SD card to remove write protection.
I can see the internal storage space
I can see the internal SD of the tablet on my windows box...not the sd card thats in the slot. I did however install usb drivers from acer they are on the support homepage of the acer a500

You should be able to go through sdcard folder to external memory. Acer gives root directory instead of just sdcard.
I cannot see external CD card as well via PC.
Astro reports it in /mnt/external_sd
yes, this is a well-known issue that is most likely honeycomb related.
Hi all. I have a stock a500 with 3.1. Not rooted. I put in the 16gb SD card with files in it and I don't get any indication of the card in the bottom right corner. My phone however will recognize it and the files that are on it. Any suggestions? Ty for any replies
"Try unplugging it, and plugging it in again" - Mistabishi 'Printer Jam'.
What FS is the card formatted to? Have you tried any other card that is known to work? Also, try formatting the SD as FAT32 again from the phone.
I am having the SAME issue on my acer. It wont recognize my 16gb sandisk card. I tried formatting as described and I tried another card. Both are showing up in my HTC inspire but nothing on the acer. Whats the deal? When I go to storage in settings- the external SD total space is recognized but it is not allowing me to access it for storage using app2sd?
this SD card worked just fine on the transformer I took it out of.

Are you even able to see the SD card? check /mnt/sd-external to see if it shows up. If it's there, create a directory, then delete it. Also, check the ".android-secure" hidden directory that should be on the SD card after using app2sd. If the permissions are not set correctly, you won't be able to use app2sd with it (reason for create/delete of the directory). Sidenote, I've seen quite a few apps named app2sd, some of them listed are showing up on my end as non-working with the A500 where others listed should work fine.

Still, that does not give me anything to go on. Did you format the card again? Is the card formatted in FAT32? Have you tried formatting the card from your computer using a card reader? I've had SD cards not show up before, reformatting them correctly solved the issue each time. If you don't know what filesystem the card is formatted with, grab a LiveCD with gparted on it (almost any gnome distribution) and I can help you from there. I haven't used Windows since XP SP2 was first released (FCKGW-... if you know what I mean) and I have refused to touch anything Apple since the IIe. Hence the signature.
formatting
Not sure what format they are in. I used a thunderbolt to for mate and a fsscinate and neither were visible. I'll go check what you recommended above though.
What are you guys talking about?
To the OP: You won't have any indication at the bottom. That feature doesn't exist on our devices (but some custom roms based on xoom and ?ASUS? have it). Just check the System screen to see if it finds your sd or simply make a photo from your camera (just set it to save the pictures to your SD). Or use a program and check /mnt/external-sd
To da9b16: a2sd won't work on this device (besides it has enough internal memory).
You'll only be able to access SD directly from your internal memory if you root the device and use a program that creates a symlink from /mnt/external-sd to /sdcard (USB Mount All does this but it's not free) or if you simply navigate to /mnt/external-sd with a file explorer.
I hope that this clears some confusion.

hey i have a similar problem , when i put my SD card does recognize but the apps like photo gallery or play music wont read any file from my SD card what can i do
So I rooted this stupid tablet and put the custom acer recovery app or whatever it is on it. Installed the proper CWM, and when I boot into recovery and try into install zip from SD card all it shows is "Lost.dir". Nothing else. What am I doing wrong?? The ROM/Kernel I want are on the root of my sd card, why isn't it showing up?
Because the tablet isn't stupid it knows exactly where the files should go but you didn't put them there? You just put your files into a wrong directory namely your internal storage.
/sdcard/ = internal storage which isn't used by CWM
/mnt/external_sd/ = SD card which is accessed by CWM
EDIT:
And in case you're looking for USB... The tablet mounts it under /mnt/usb_storage

Take your time and have patience. I know the feeling. How are you transferring the data to the micro SD card? Can you use a file manager app to access the card, /mnt/external_sd?

Again over and over ..try another SD card maybe two this is a very common issue.very common
Try diffrent SD cards if you have not
Or use a USB drive and flash from there. I do it all the time if I'm to lazy to copy the files to my SD card.
I am also stumped with the the acer reading the micro sd card. I am able to see it using root explorer. However, I cant see it when it is connected to my computer. I had to place my sd card in my galaxy tab in order to transfer files to it, and then place it in the iconia. That appeared to be the only way to put the rom on the root of my sd card. I want to save my stock back up to my computer in case I damage my sd card, but there seems to be no way to do it with out removing the card and placing it in another device. Am I missing something? Dont want to start another thread, so I'm asking here because it looks like it's been seen by other users.

FYI ( just in case ) !!!
When fully booted... SD CARD is the internal storage... and the physical card is shown as EXTERNAL SD CARD !
When at CWM recovery... SD CARD is the real physical card !
again KNOWN ISSUE

No problem here but I am running the rom listed below. I see it on the tab and when I plug it in the computer. Everything works.

Hey everyone, need some help and been searching for hours for an answer. I have a rooted Galaxy s4. I have apps that are installed to my external SD through the system options and I also have used folder mount to transfer some apps to external SD. I'm guessing that these are hidden files on my external SD card. I want to swap my current 32GB card for a newer 64GB card. How can I create an exact copy of my external card? I tried copying and pasting all my contents from my external sd but it didn't transfer everything because my apps weren't there upon installing the new SD. How to I copy the entire contents of the old 32GB external SD to the new 64 GB external sd? Thanks

How did you copy them? If you plug in the phone over USB then it won't show all files on the SD card in the phone, you either have to put it in it's own USB reader or get the USB Mass Storage app to mount it
