Am I good to flash radios? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There's a thread over in the development section with a could of radios, and I was gonna try flashing the third one.
This is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059347
My question was whether or not I was clear to flash them. I used the visionary method to root, but does that mean I have radio S-OFF? I've rooted the phone, i have the engineering bootloader, and I've flashed roms before. I'm nervous to try a radio because I've heard flashing radios is one of the more dangerous things one can do with an android phone. Also, will all of the mytouch 4g roms still work, including stock?

No you need real root perm S-Off plus engineer bootloader. Visionary is just temp root every time you reboot you'll lost root.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App

I did the permroot using visionary method. I have the eng hboot and S-OFF. I know what you're talking about, but there is a way to permroot using visionary.

what version of visionary? Last time i check visionary is just temp root. Then Good luck to you bro.

Visionary has been perm root for months now, but he would still need to Gfree to S-off.

I used visionary for perm root s-off on stock rom, and just updated the radio thru hboot, so you should be able to do the same thing.
[via XDA premium]

Wait, he's talking about using the root.sh file to gain S-OFF. He didn't use the Gfree method like most of us. I'm still rooted using the root.sh file. Will it work, he's raido is still S-ON but his bootloader is S-OFF. I remember reading somewhere when I had the G2 that, the radio is still locked.
Wait, just to be safe, root using the gfree method and then flash the radio.

That's just what I needed to hear.

And by the way here's proof that there is a perm root visionary has a permroot method - this is my phone.
I think this is enough to be able to flash a radio, right?

That is correct... You need the g-free method (ultimate s-off/radio off) to unlock your radio, so the new one can be flashed.
You also should install the eng. bootloader.

Here's the thing: VISIONary is ALWAYS used to temproot and to permroot, but somewhere in between you need to run an exploit script. You used root.sh to root your phone. Other people have used gfree to do it. That's where methods differ, so saying "I used the VISIONary method" is unclear and doesn't tell us exactly what you did.

Ohhhh, fair enough. I'll remember that next time. But this still doesn't really answer my question. Is it safe to flash a new radio after using that method?

According to your photo you can flash the radio.

I read it, but it doesn't provide a way to tell if you have a REAL radio s-off or not.

You don't have radio s-off because you only used visionary method to perm root and I wouldn't flash other radios if I were you, just to play it safe. You need to use gfree method here to get radio s-off (turn off radio's security completely). You need to restore back to stock ROM for gfree to work because it didn't work for me when I was on another ROM and I had to restore back to stock and do gfree method. If the gfree method from the previous link that I gave, doesn't work, try this newer one from here. You can find instructions and download links to HTC Glacier's radios from there also and other files.

Oooh for the love of god people you made me post. I don't normally post but in this case ill make an exception. Now listen carefully as ill say this only once.
You do NOT need to have "Radio S-OFF" via gfree for it to flash the RadioROM. All you need is S-OFF and yes using VISIONary+ permROOT you can flash the new radio. All you have to do is download it and place as /mnt/sdcard/PD15IMG.zip and restart in to the bootloader. Once its detected just follow the instructions and press down to accept or up to deny.
You do NOT need gfree meth to flash the radio has it can be done using VISIONary+ permROOT. I hope this clears that about the OP.

what does flashing the radio accomplish?

Looks like I have to post again. The RadioROM controls the device's power control along with other radio interfaces for example wireless, data, wifi, bluetooth, gps, ect. Since resection capability is also handled in Radio each can have different impact on cell/battery which depends on the location thus not giving same results for all users. On serious note RadioROM bricks the phone if image is corrupted due to the radio bootloader which is always device specific thus controlling the firmwares that is directly interfacing with the OS.
PS: When you mess with the RadioROM's you get Hard-Brick not Soft-Brick.

The diference is that S-ON means singature verification On, in other words your phone is not rooted now. If you try install another rom, it wont install. Could you please Copy the details wich are on Fastboot?
PLease try remember the last modifications wich you've made on your phone before become S-ON after you rooted.
A well rooted phone is something similer as:

I still have root access. I can use the su command in terminal emulator. Does S-ON just prevent from installing another ROM?
hmm interesting. You are a 32B i need to study those (I only understand of 32A But since we are a community surely someone with a 32 B should know the awser but i'll also study those) . But according to theory you cant flash new rom. Could you provide the instructions you followed please?
Superuser app installed, i'm not sure at wich point it should work completly with Sign ON.
Please test by going to the adb and enter in su mode then type cd /data/app-private if it works than the ROM is rooted.
But the Singature verification is ON so i supposed the protection again rom flashing is on also.
S-ON prevents you from using fastboot commands. It does not mean you're not rooted.. You can definitely flash another rom with S-ON

Ok but there are still methods in the forum for unrooting just like how you rooted. I would just do a search for them and choose which one you feel is the easiest for you to understand. Also if you are getting another EVO unrevoked 3.21 is as many in here have said easy peasy for rooting.
Good luck

Precisely. It can be found here:
*OFFICIAL* RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_rel.
One thing to check first: do you have S-OFF? This would be the case if you ever ran Unrevoked Forever or Unrevoked 3.21. If so, you'll need to flash the Unrevoked Forever S-ON tool from recovery before running the RUU.

Reboot into the bootloader (turn phone off, then hold power+volume down until it comes on). Then look at the end of the first line.
If it says SHIP S-ON, you're good.
If it says SHIP S-OFF, you need to run the Unrevoked tool.
If it says ENG S-OFF (which should be the case if you used Toast's method), it is indeterminate.
However, if you never used Unrevoked at all, you shouldn't have to worry about it. You can check after you run the RUU, which will reset it to the SHIP bootloader.
I believe the 3.29 RUU resets everything, including the PRI. Toast's method downgraded the PRI, and it was difficult to get it back before the current update, so this used to be a sure-fire way of telling whether you had rooted. Unless you had a bad Wimax flash and broke your 4G, I *think* you should be OK. But I don't know for sure.

Perma-rooted G2 a while back, do I need to Root it with Gfree??

Ok I got my G2 when it first came out. Used the old rage method to get S-OFF and perma root. Now i'm reading people say that they have "real" S-OFF and real permaroot. Do I have to do the "gfree" method now or is my phone good as it is?
I understand that with gfree you can unlock your SIM and you can switch between S-OFF and S-ON.. I'd like to have those functions. How should I go about it? Do I do a factory reset to go back to stock and unroot and then use gfree method or is there a simpler way to do it?
Here's what I have right now:
Stock rom, I NEVER installed any OTA's.
I have Baconbits.
My baseband is: 12.22.60.09bU_26.02.01.15_M2
Kernel: 2.6.32.21-cyanogenmod [email protected]#1
Build #: 1.19.531.1 CL255798 release-keys
Thanks for all the help.
Since you have root and a stock rom installed, just run gfree -- that is ALL you need to do. The advantage, aside from unlocking the radio, is that with the proper s-off, there is some new security for the radio... for unbricking and for being able to withstand accidental OTA updates. A true radio s-off can take an OTA update containing BOTH an SPL and a Radio, and yet s-off remains.

See the Wiki for details. Assuming you are running a kernel where gfree works (again, see the Wiki on this), you just need a root shell on your phone, copy gfree to your phone (e.g. via adb push), then run gfree with the appropriate options, e.g. "./gfree -f".

Using gfree does not get rid of the engineering hboot (or modify your existing hboot in anyway), so it's safe to do. And even if this was not the case, you can still flash the CWM3 recovery without the engineering hboot, only you'll have to use a different method than fastboot.

Not sure about Baconbits, check the Wiki for the list of kernels that are known not to work with gfree.
If you apply the OTA after unlocking with gfree, you will still lose root but you won't lose the S-OFF and other stuff from gfree.

Not just gfree on its own, but you will need to go through the steps of getting temp root then perm root, which does use gfree as part of it. It's all in the Wiki.

gfree does NOT root your phone. It UNLOCKS RADIO SECURITY -- permanently. You only run it ONCE, you NEVER have to run it again... EVER.
With UNLOCKED RADIO SECURITY, gaining root is TRIVIAL.
What gets root is RAGE or PSNEUTER.

Yeah but gfree is often used as part of the rooting process, so I can see why people associate gfree with rooting.
gfree might be run more than once on a phone as part of the process to lock in root, i.e. to defeat the NAND write protection. Even though it's only needed once to unlock the radio etc, you might run it other times if you need to root a stock ROM and updates to that ROM.
gfree can be used to unlock radio security, but it has other options too. Sorry but I think your reply might confuse more people than it helps.

I'm perm rooted! but I lost the ota update cause I was simi-brick how can I get the OTA update? do I have to to a factory reset?
You should get the OTA right away after restarting the phone, I know I did after going back to stock on just Saturday of this week. The first time I connected to the network it said an update was available and it was the OTA.
that hasnt happen and it need to hurry up!! lol
So do a Factory reset?

Want to repurpose/play around with my G1

Hello,
I recently got a Nexus One to replace my old G1. Now that the Nexus One is my daily driver phone, I want to get my hands dirty and play around with my G1. Even though I had my G1 for nearly a year, I never went ahead and installed any custom ROMs on the thing fearing that I'd somehow brick the phone or mess it up in some way, so I stuck with the official Donut update (it's been hard using Android 1.x while everyone has been using >2.x for the past year or so).
Anyway, I've wiped the G1 back to factory settings and then downgraded it to RC29 (using this guide) so I could activate it over WiFi (I don't have an active SIM in the phone). So right now, I'm on stock Android 1.0.
I think I want to try a Sense ROM on my G1 (Sense is my favorite custom Android UI and I think it looks pretty darned good, too). Are there any decent Sense ROMs for the G1 that are fast and stable? Preferably, I'd like them to be based on Android 2.0 or higher for better app compatibility (and maybe multi-touch).
I won't be using the G1 as a phone (or at least I don't plan to). I intend on using it mainly to browse the internet over WiFi.
Since I've never done any rooting or custom ROM installations on my phone, I'm a bit of a noob at the entire rooting/flashing process. Are there any special precautions that I'd need to take on a phone running stock Android 1.0?
Thanks.

hey,
here's a good sense rom:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116154 it's android 2.1 Eclair.
to flash that rom, your going to have to root and upgrade your radio/spl here's a good guide for that:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098899
Just follow that guide and you should be good.
and your also going to have to partiton your sd card with swap and ext 4 partitions so just follow my instructions:
Ok, so heres what your going to do.
We are going to partition through recovery:
boot into recovery
go to the partition sd card option
click partition sd card
use these sizes:ext 2: 512 mb, linux swap : 96mb, and the rest is for the fat 32 partition
then once that is done, click ; SD:ext2 to ext3 :: Convert ext2 to ext3
then once that is done, click : SD:ext3 to ext4 :: Convert ext3 to ext4
and u now have ext 4!
and there ur done.

Before I do anything, should I upgrade to Android 1.5 or 1.6 or will it be easier for me to do this process on 1.0/RC29 (which I believe can be easily rooted).

Upgrade to android 1.5 it'll make things easier.
Sent from my Gingerbread on Dream using XDA App
yeah i believe you need 1.5 to gain root access on device
@maximo thanks for reccomending my ROM & rooting guide
@beanboy if you have any further questions maximo and myself are usually available so dont be shy to ask questions!!! there is nooooo stupid question out there when it comes to rooting your device! nobody wants a brick in there pocket
Easiest way to root would be upgrade to 1.6
Run universal androot
Install rom manager and flash recovery of choice through there.
Then you should upgrade to the 0013d spl and 27.08 it 28.25 radio.
Then flash rom.
(For sense I recommend senselx. (Yes I'm recommending a rom I kinda helped develop )
Otherwise I recommend ezgingerbread.)
I got 1.5 installed, but when I try to update to 1.6 from the SD card, I get this error:
http://i.imgur.com/NuEvT.jpg
I guess I'll have to wait for the OTA update?

I think ldrifta's guide is for 1.5
I've never used 1.5 and I only used 1.6 long enough to root and flash cm.
Universal androot might work on 1.5. Try it and see what happens. If it works then find a flash_image binary and a recovery image and flash it manually
Manual flash instructions via adb:
adb push flash_image /data/local
adb push recovery.img /sdcard
adb shell
$ su
# chmod +x /data/local/flash_image
# /data/local/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Flashing from the phone works the same way, just with everything run in a terminal and changed appropriately
Or if you have an eng spl you can use fastboot and 3 commands to get the latest radio and spl and custom recovery. Look for ezterry's 14mb ram thread
I think something is up with my G1's hardware. Before I completely wiped everything, I had been having problems with the SD card not being detected most of the time. I tried different cards, and none of them seemed to improve the situation. So, I followed ldrifta's guide since I was already on Android 1.5. I was got through step 1 (installing OI File Manager, installing flashrec from the SD card, and then flashed the backup recovery. I rebooted into recovery mode (I guess it was just the new recovery that I had just flashed). I then wiped the device and when I went to flash the .zip file, it wouldn't let me do so, giving some errors about not being able to read the SD card or something. So I rebooted back into normal Android 1.5 (I think) and now I'm stuck not being able to activate the phone because there's no data. I guess I'll have to go back to RC29 to reactivate. This is beginning to seem like way too much trouble. Ugh.
I had issue with class 2 sdcards in my device. They randomly wouldn't work. Maybe you are having the same problem. Try a class 4 or faster card.
Or if you got to the point of having an eng spl, the only thing the sdcard is needed for us flashing roms. How far did you get into ldrifta's guide?
I got through step 1 and had just started step 2 where I went to wipe the device. The installing update .zip didn't seem to work. I went ahead and reflashed back to RC29 and now I'm back with Android 1.0.
I've tried two SD cards: A 1 GB Transcend (no class because it's not an SDHC card) and two different 4 GB SanDisks (each class 2).
Try to follow his guide up to getting an eng spl if you don't already have one. If you have one then flash the new radio and spl and a recovery via fastboot. Then try to get a class 4 sdcard and see if it helps

I assume I still have the default SPL installed. I don't think I was able to flash any other SPLs. I'll go through and try to upgrade Android again to 1.5 or 1.6. And speaking of that, do I need to install 1.5 before installing 1.6? I see that the .zip for 1.5 is much bigger than 1.6's. Are the updates incremental, meaning I have to have 1.5 installed first and then upgrade to 1.6?
Okay, I got 1.6 installed. I installed 1.5 CRB43, and then 1.5 CRC1, and finally 1.6 DRC83. Apparently you can't update directly from CRB43 to DRC83. I guess I'm now set to start rooting, flashing recoveries, flashing radios, and installing custom ROMs...
I'd suggest Ginger Yoshi 1.2.1
I'm still a bit confused on the process that I'd follow, however. I see guides that say that I need to have a certain radio, installed, a certain recovery, etc. I'm still not exactly sure of what I need or what I need to do it. I know that I can't just flash a custom ROM from the stock recovery and expect it to work. For example, how do I check my radio version and recovery (I think I have the stock recovery)?

Does it say s-off? Or eng ?

[Guide] S-Off and Supercid for m8

S-OFFWhat is S-OFF?
When you buy the m8 it comes with security measures into bootloader, which prevent you from installing custom firmwares or other tweaks. By obtaining S-Off, you can completely ignore those rules and do basically whatever you want with your device.
How to get S-OFF?
Currently there is only one method of obtaining s-off and that is by using sunshine. It costs 25$ but its worth it if you ask me. It is found in the form of an app., when you first install it it will check for compatibility if your device is compatible it will bring you to the paying screen.

You can find it here
SupercidWhat does Supercid do?
It allows you to flash ANY FIRMWARE to the device regardless of the carrier.
This method is via fastboot This means that no script or editing is required
S-Off required!!!!!
1 ) Download adb tools from the attachments
2.) On your PC open your C: Drive (or any drive)
3 ) Create a new folder called "adb" and extract the files from adb.zip into it. Make sure you get a folder location of C:\adb
4 ) Open command prompt and type
cd C:\adb
5) Switch on your phone (regular home screen) and connect it by USB (Ensure USB debugging is on and fast boot is off in the settings)
6) Enter in the command premote
adb devices
You should get a list of devices attached with your serial number
7) Then enter the command
adb reboot-bootloader
device WILL reboot in bootloader and will connect via fastboot
8) Then Enter
fastboot oem readcid
Make a note of your original CID, this is very important
9) Then Enter
fastboot oem writecid 11111111
10) Then Enter
fastboot oem readcid
You should get a conformation saying that your cid is 11111111
11) Then navigate to the power down option on your device via the volume buttons
12) That is it Now you have Supercid !!!!!
To return to stock cid:
It is the same process but in place of step 9 enter the command
fastboot write cid YOURCID
where YOURCID is the CID you made a note of
so for me this would be
fastboot oem writecid HTC__J15

#12 now you can flash any rom you want is wrong. You can flash any rom you want on any cid as long as the bootloader is unlocked, a custom recovery is installed and that you are running the compatible firmware. Supercid is definitely not the thing you need to flash any rom.
This all gives the impression you need supercid to flash roms which is wrong.
S-off serves the purpose to put back any boot loader flags, turn it back to LOCKED for lets say warranty purposes. And to enable you to convert the phone to any (branded or unbranded) firmware you wish, to downgrade and upgrade the hboot. Those sort of things.
Supercid alone does not debrand a device.
Example :
The phone is vodaphone branded then you can flash the wwe *.**.401 FIRMWARE to debrand it to the wwe type devices. Putting superCID on a vodaphone branded device does NOT unbrand it !
Nice guide but definitely not complete.
Just saying.

Edited thanks for that!!!!
Not to nag....but it's still there. I would change that to ANY FIRMWARE instead of ANY ROM.

Sorry just to add on to this post if you don't mind.
I currently have a Three UK branded M8 and I'd like to turn it into the stock European/UK unbranded version so that when the 6.0 update arrives I don't have to wait for Three UK to get it months after (also I want rid of the Three splash screen).
Can I just flash the latest Euro/UK unbranded RRU without needing S-OFF to enable the OTA to come or would I still need to change the CID as well to the Euro/UK one (which I think is HTC__001?) to enable OTAs?
As far as I can see from all the searching I've done I couldn't change the CID without S-OFF and therefore would have the Euro/UK image installed but not have OTAs enabled as the CID would be different?

If you can't change the CID and MID
you can't flash different RUU
to do that must have S-OFF
if you just want OTA just unroot flash stack Rom unroot onev and flash back stack recovery you can get OTA

My phone was also on three UK. I S-OFF'ed last Sunday and changed the CID and MID to US unlocked. Now I'm enjoying marshmallow. There is only one way to de-brand and that is S-OFF.

Check your MID and do the respective RUU first to return your firmware to complete stock.
