I am a new Android user coming from using Iphones.
I am wondering what the benefits are for rooting the A500.
What can be done and what softwares can be run that cant be done in stock?
any real cons to rooting the tablet?
Also, is it possible to make netflix think the tab is a desktop or a phone that is verified to work with netflix? just wondering if netflix is possible on A500. as far as i know, it isnt
Screen capture apps, uninstall bloatware, terminal, roms, themes, overclocking, etc etc.. ROMs wont come until we get recovery in there
For me... top reason: CIFS support !!!! (and another Thank You!! to thor2002ro for providing the CIFS.ko module - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058713).
CIFS support allows my rooted Acer to mount network shared drives on my Windows PC and then access them via any application on the Acer as if they were locally attached. This means I have access to my PC-based Music, Movie, eBook and Comic/Manga libraries.
Biggest reason for me is that I can then run Titanium Backup and regularly back up and restore my system.
Second reason is custom ROMs since that's the only way A500 purchasers will ever see any really decent OS upgrades.
Uninstalling the crapware was my biggest motivation, though I should probably back stuff up as well...

I don't have Netflix, but I know that Skyfire and Dolphin HD browsers both have settings that let you change your "user agent" to "Desktop" instead of "Android"
Netflix wont work. There is a leaked netflix app out but it's disabled for honeycomb. Unfortunately switching a browser to a desktop agent mode wont work either because netflix on the desktop actually uses silverlight rather than flash.. It's all pretty stupid. The app works PERFECTLY. They are just choosing to disable it

Sadly, Netflix is device activated and not OS. Exception being laptop and desktop OS's.
All portable devices must go through an approval process and the OEM needs to pay Netflix to set the device up and run on Netflix servers. The only OEM for an Android device to do this so far is LG (Revolution).
Not sure if this is how it will always be, but does not look like it will be app or OS activated.

If Acer aren't going to provide decent updates to the OS they had sure as hell better unlock the boot loader.
I don't understand why they would lock it, it makes the device much more desirable unlocked. What do Acer have to gain by locking it?

The problem is the people can still root their device, then brick it and have no recourse because of the locked boot loader. So it could actually end up worse. If I bricked my device I'd take it straight back to the store I bought it from and get a new one. If the boot loader was unlocked I could restore with custom roms.

I know, sucks eh? I was under this wrong impression too when I bought the device. I thought Google would update and we could get it straight away, turns out we are at the mercy of Acer for the updates.
Bootloader
is the bootloader locked for good or are we waiting on a hack? I like both the asus and acer tablets, I am going to buy whichever tablet has the most community support / activity (well if asus ever gets stocked locally). This is why I love my nook color so much. With the capability of booting from an SD card it's practically unbrickable. I accidentally formatted my boot partition using CWR, with any other device it would have been devastating.

My G1 is two days old so came from the shop (T-Mobile, UK) with Android RC-30 already on. I've been trying to use it as a modem for my laptop on public transport (without success).
So far I have Tetherbot installed and the Socks service started on 1080, Android SDK is installed on the lappy (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) and 'adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080) creates a port to which I can telnet to (and terminate from by pressing return). FF is configured to use a manual proxy on localhost:1080..
Also set the about:config network.proxy.socks_remote_dns flag to true.
All good, except when I enter any URL into FF, the status bar immediately shows 'Done' yet there's no rendering being done at all - still looking at a blank screen.
I've yet to try FoxyProxy which I'll give a go tonight - but I was wondering if it is currently possible to configure a instance of RC-30 w/o root access at all? Reading around, some people say it is while others say it isn't..
Many thanks,
Duncan
Definitely works in ota RC30. Snippet from the Tetherbot thread:
Make sure that you set FoxyProxy to use SOCKS for DNS lookups(under Global Settings)...this stumped me too at first

Thanks! Web-browsing now works with FoxyProxy although I have to keep re-entering the ./adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080 command every few minutes..
Setting up the port-bouncer for ssh on 22 was less successful though, as it usually causes the Tetherbot application to crash.
Any ideas why T-Mobile wouldn't want you to use the phone as a modem anyway? Having come from an O2/Xda package I'd just expected that all modern phones would work as modems. Shame about the root lock-down too, I was half hoping for a meaningful bash shell and porting/installing Gnu utils, etc.
I guess the G1 would have the same data problems even if it were paired with a tablet like the N-800?
Many thanks,
Duncan

My guess is it has to do with anticipated network usage. I don't know how tethering works with data plans in the UK, but generally in the US unlimited data is divided into handset-only and full unlimited (e.g. for pc cards). Not only is data usage generally lower for mobile applications, you're also highly limited by battery life.

A lot of people were hoping for that. The G1 isn't that device though. Full unencumbered shell access would just be a nightmare from a customer service POV. The G1 is first and foremost a consumer device. A lot of those people could end up easily and irreversibly bricking their phones from a root shell.
Yeah i hear that, thats why i really dont care if i have root access. I'm sure in time all that we are wishing for will come out for g1, dont wanna ruin my phone!!! All i really want is internet sharing on mine.

It has nothing to do with customer service, but T-Mobile's desire to retain control over things. They probably don't want people to do internet sharing, because it will slow down their network. What they don't realize, is that soon there are going to be a lot of unlocked android phones available which wont be subject to their policies.
What I don't get is that with any other HTC device you can boot the phone into SPL mode and flash a new image. With the G1, that is not possible.

Your speculations are incorrect. T-Mobile stated that they will not stop or block internet sharing, but they will not help you either. Basically they remain neutral and that is why you think T-Mobile is against you.
Google blocked the usb mode image flash. So far we just don't know how to flash a new image because we are not sure if it is supposed to be DREA100.IMG or what is even in the image itself.
Back on topic, I think you will see a real solution when Android 1.0 is released. Or at least have a way to get full root. Basically from what has been said root was locked down not because of anything we did but because the source is not open yet. They are working on things behind the scenes and they need to finish those before they want us to fool around. Give them time to finish their projects and then they will let us start our own.

A few things...
1. The source code has already been published (minus a few hardware specific drivers) at source.android.com. You can build an image from source and boot it on the emulator that Google has packaged with the android sdk. There still is no way to load said image on a G1 unless you have root of course.
2. Google didn't lock down SPL on the dream, HTC did. And it was probably because T-Mobile didn't want people loading their own firmware on a device that is already running on open source software.
3. Ever since this root nonsense has come to light, I don't buy the whole neutrality thing. If everyone had root access, we would have a much easier way to tether.
@jashu: I know exactly what I'm talking about because I tried doing the same thing on my friends G1 with the official RC30 firmware on it.

1. Google hasn't released the entire source code, even they have said that officially on the android site.
2. Google asked HTC to do that.
3. Google is the one that locked down root not T-Mobile. Again this goes back to them not having 1.0 released.

Not only does this convince me you don't know what you're talking about, it also leads me to believe you don't know what you're doing either. Just because you can't figure out the simple instructions to perform socks-based tethering when everyone else already has doesn't mean it is broken.

Duncan, I think you should have another look at what device you have, tmouk devices came out with rc-7 and an ota put them upto 8, so before you start askin questions get your facts right. Also it wasn't tmobile alone that blocked the device being used as a modem it was a joint effort between htc google and tm to promote the use of the open source to its full potential. It also doesn't breach any fair use using the hset as a modem which if it 'wasnt' allowed then you would be breaching the fair use. Ta

Hi guys

lets make our device better
ok...Done
Done. There are some good questions on the survey.
In the comments I requested support for HTTP Proxy, in case anyone is trying to think of things to wish for
poll is not "from" archos
please change the title
Thanks for alerting us to this survey. I hope that Archos really takes note of what we say. Here's what I posted for Archos to consider:
Archos, you guys have done some very good things. The battery life on my A70 is phenomenal for example. But more important than getting everything right, is PRIORITIZING what your customers need.
1. There is no 3G on any of the Gen8, so Bluetooth tethering is absolutely CRITICAL. I have had my A70 for over a month and I still cannot successfully tether it to my Android 2.2 phone (which is absolutely capable of tethering). That is a shame. An Android tablet should be able to tether to an Android phone like brother and sister. If Bluetooth is too difficult to get done now, at least add support for Ad-hoc WiFi. I need SOME way to tether my tablet to my phone. Please.
2. After tethering, your next priority (as in working on it right now) has to be getting Honeycomb pushed to the Gen 8. I know it will be a few months maybe, but please don't make us wait 8-10 months after other devices have it like some manufacturers do.
After you do those things, then you can focus on the rest of the stuff:
3. Increase RAM, yes even if you have to change your file system or whatever.
4. Allow charging via USB.
5. People have been begging for this since we got our hands on Gen8. Please, please, please create a system option to hide the on-screen buttons (back, menu, home, search) in certain situations. It throws off alignment on the homescreen and isn't very useful in the video player either.
OK, Done +1
Done.

Thx, done.
I requested a standard 'enable root' setting, essential for backups. Without it, you have to use an uncertified tool like Archangel or install the SDE and an uncertified OS image. Not having a standard root option in the development settings is actually more of a security risk than having it.

Just a word of advice. When writing to a company, generally telling them what to do and how to do it doesn't get you very far. Additionally, when telling a company "what the people want" you need to be able to back it up with fact. Otherwise they will likely view it as your opinion and thus you are speaking for one which lessons and "power" your message could send.
I mean your points are good, don't get me wrong. I just think a different style of writing would have gotten more than a circular file response...

I don't know what is it, or how they do it, but first I wanna know why they do it. All I heard is root! root! root!
get to know it
Do not root update install 3rd party apps until you know honeycomb and android
Of course root is obviously needed it also puts system files in your hands to mess up.
Please be careful and read all the forums and threads here
Thanks for hearing my 2 cents
If you dont know why you most likely do not need to do so yet
There are a great bunch of people here .take your time and do not jumpinto to deep
If you're not going to root, obviously the first thing is to set your tablet up with your Google account (either an existing GMail account or a new one.) Then set up any other email accounts, and install any apps you know you want that aren't on the tablet already (Kindle/Nook, games, utilities, TweetDeck, Pandora, MoboPlayer, etc.)
Find yourself a good File Manager; Android doesn't come by default with a program to let you view the files on your tablet :| I personally use ES File Explorer, but HD File Manager is also pretty good and was designed for Honeycomb/tablet size displays.
As Erica said above, don't even consider rooting until you've worked with Android a bit. If you don't need the tools root provides, you're better off not doing it.
Rooting your tablet (or other Android device) installs a "SuperUser" application which can allow other apps to act as the owner of the operating system (for Windows user, Administrator level privileges rather than User). In most cases, the method of getting root involves using a device- or Android-version-specific exploit/security hole.
With Root/SU, you can:
Run root-only apps like Titanium Backup, SetCPU (profiles only currently)
Remove and/or replace apps and other files not normally in the "user" space (CAUTION: Acer's update process expects damned near all of the pre-installed apps to still be there, so ALWAYS back up the original files!)
Once the hard-working and never-appreciated-enough Devs figure out a way around the bootloader (or Acer unlocks it), you can replace the kernel files, overclock, replace the entire ROM with a custom one
Some caveats:
Rooting will almost certainly void your warranty (if discovered should you have to return it for warranty service) and if you do it wrong, you can brick your device (i.e. you now have a flat black brick, not a functional device)
Some apps will not work on devices that are rooted (and/or have the SuperUser app present). Currently this includes at a minimum Google Movies and Blockbuster.
DON'T waste you time trying to update. It's been pulled until release fo HC 3.1.
DO enjoy the unit!
DO download apps and play.
Root at your own risk, but HC 3.1 is around the corner and you will have a dificult time getting it if you don't know what your not a techie.
Lastly, put it in Airplane mode before sleep mode to save battery. If you are turning it off, no dif.
Get Astro file mgr - free

Load a micro mem card with all you music and videos, and enjoy one of the best devices in production.
If you have a memory card reader, blow you Ipad friends minds by asking them to borrow the memory card in their digital camera, plug it into the USB and swipe through their pictures. They don't have an app for that.
I have had my A500 since last week. I have basically just been trying out apps and browsing Forums to get more info. In the end the forum here seems to be most active and contains the most interesting information.
Also try to google for list with "Optimized for Honeycomb". This will make you fiind the apps that are optimized for the Tablet.
I did not root my device as I dont have any need for it (yet), but I am certainly waiting for 3.1. The current version of honeycomb is a bit unstable.
For the rest just enjoy the tablet
Smile, you just bought a great tablet
So what are you guys saying is that I should not update my build version, and wait for the 3.1 update
Of course first have to buy a screen protector before remove the plastic cover. Apply the screen protector before it get dusted. Then only turn on the device, sign in your Google account and connect internet and do setting. Then go update the firmware.

You are aware that ubuntu has no proper support for touchscreens; even if it runs you won't gain anything by doing that. When I installed a linux a few months ago on another device it worked, then I was fascinated about one minute and then I decided that there is no use for it an deleted it eventually.
I just do not understand why it is so important to get a desktop-os running on a smartphone. Battery drains fast, no support for the radio etc.

Its not important, but funny and cool if it works (on this device). How did you do it?
Until recently I still had my old samsung-omnia-winmo6.5-phone. There was an app for linux available; you just had to install an imagefile to the sd-card. The fun did last for a minute and then I realized I cannot do anything with this small screen and that it was pretty much useless.
I think that a lot of people here will just read the topic and think "omg this is amazing, now I can have my desktop-os on the phone, great" and later they realize how much time they just wasted.
If it really is fun for you guys, I won't try and stop you
How about using linux programs? i think that it may be quite useful sometimes... Put honestly... it is just for funright now... but it may be helpful if we could dual boot.... maybe in the future
I got this working, it isn't that slow as you could imagine, firefox takes around 30 sec to start and load the front page. That said, the keyboard works but is way off and impossible to use (I push "d" and "f" shows up and so on).
if anyone understand this the keyboard will be fixed:
In VNC’s xstartup file: $HOME/.vnc/xstartup
You have to add the line export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1 before
/etc/X11/Xsession or gnome-session (in case you use GNOME)
Screenshot actually taken with an ubuntu tool, I have set the resolution to 1200*800 in the virtual enviriment.
Here is a video with Huawei Ideos X5 running Ubuntu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SaoneDtNqA&feature=BFp&list=WL01C152CD7D31A7C8&index=1
Will try this later tonight and let you guys know if it works. Just have to work first >.<
The significance of linux running is to have a backup operating system to use on the phone if the Oracle / Google dispute over Java begins to really disrupt the market.
Think also freedombox.org, your own personal, secure and anonymous cloud system as a refuge if a dictatorship emerges or particularly nasty rise of corporatism occurs.
At heart, our U8800's can easily be linux box server with up to 32Gb of onboard storage with wi-fi AND gsm network connections. Being battery operated, if the thought police decend upon your community, you could take it to another place, unknown to the nasty guys, and re-establish mesh network connection to get reports of civil rights abuses out to the rest of the world.
Reason enough to have the capability to run Ubuntu Server edition (or any other Linux Server flavour)?
If you're interested to see what's already possible, even within Android (Linux will deliver more power), install "File Expert" from the market to get your very own web file server, right there in your phone.

You didn't Found a better ubuntu boot-file, x5 faster, keyboard works, WIFI, pre-installed with many programs ( Open Office for work.. etc) easy to use with touch screen. here is how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUG9aC_tH5s
And the files/instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962023
I am using a Shield TV Pro (2015) never rooted and I have stayed on 5.0.2 for all this time waiting for a stable update (6.3 sounds really stable compared to older OTAs) but now as soon as I heard about that OTA version's release,it started showing a different OTA upgrade than it should which is...version 5.2! :crying:
Please, how do I fix this ridiculous problem?
I know that this is the notorious OTA upgrade version that fails to download and fails on updating so I would probably end up bricked if I try to update to it in order to reach 6.x versions.
I am sick of being, for one, unable to use adobe flash player because it broke on 5.0.2 but I also want-ed to take the risk to get 6.3 since it wasn't getting huge amounts of major issues mentioned like every previous upgrade.
If it was at least 6.x then it wouldn't be so awful, but its that accursed 5.2 "upgrade" instead.
I seek help here because my Nvidia forum account has been compromised by bad username syndrome since they did that fused account crap and the stupid user rename function isn't openly allowed.

So.. I take it you are not rooted? only way I can see is either going through all the updates or rooting and then flashing 6.3

I read on the Geforce forums about sending a message in order to be added to the server for a full 6.3 update but I feel like that might not even work for bypassing the 5.2 version.
My main fear of it is also that it has been sitting on their server for a long time and by chance it could be messy due to the age of the upgrade files.
I also don't know if I have to wait for stability of the SSHD to optimize before updating to the next version afterward but I would probably do that just for safety.

Don't think the age of the file matters. I also read the forums and fewer than more have had problems with a OTA update, matter fact in my opinion the majority that do have a problem are not telling the full story.
I went ahead and double updated and am now on 6.3 with it performing decently from the start.
The thing that pisses me off though is that any form of swf player or adobe flash is still crashing!
Why is this happening on my stuff when others on builds 5.0.2 or newer claimed it was working for them?!?
Puffin's method is awful because quality is garbage and frame-rates are choppy even on lightweight stuff, and plus the controls don't work right and you can't access local swf files with it.
The other stuff used to work before the 5.0.2 upgrade.
I wish someone would hack the latest flash player version and get it ported to Android to be a hero to fans of ancient interwebz stuff.
Otherwise, where the hell is the ACTUAL replacement for adobe flash that allows full access to playing any SWF file in parity to how Adobe Flash does it?
And no,Adobe AIR is useless because they were jerks by making it only able to run stuff with actionscript 3.0 which leaves out a F-ton of old stuff that one wants to toy around with and even tons of new stuff that still uses the 2.0 actionscript.
I might have to drag out my old FireTV to see if it still works and use it primarily for a working SWF player device.
The main problem is that I can't just use my laptop to access swf content for prideful reasons and for risk of any recent ad attacks that aren't prevented in any filters at any given time.
Although,I guess I could set up a strong (but slower) VM to access all the SWF stuff in the (partial) safety of a computation layer in hopes I don't immediately get Spectre-d or Melt-ed anyway.

Also Nvidia recommends all with pro version let it sit for about 30 min to settle in after flashing, because of the hard drive. I saw that on the forum when people were complaining that they flashed and the shield was slow or stuttering.......You do know that more and more sites, companies, etc are phasing adobe flash player out and not using at all. Also here is some information for you to look at if you have not already....http://www.aiseesoft.com/resource/adobe-flash-player.html
Sorry to be rude but I don't give a **** about those facts,I just want mah swf players to work.
The whole point originally is that I wanted a device I could hope on to use for swf content while my other devices are safe from it since I never use flash on my laptop.
Do you know of a way to reset a Shield TV without deleting storage files at all?
I may just bypass that by storing everything I can, getting systemless root, storing the rest of it (browser cookies to retain logins) then do a clean slate and root again to restore all of my browser cookies to restore the logins.
I F * * * ING hate restrictions set by root access requirements! No easy way to export all cookies and import them back because the god-damned storage location of it all being in a root-access-only protected/locked directory.
Unless I am missing the idea of such a feature on all Android web browsers.
Yes,I am that guy who uses side-loaded web browsers on my SATV via a wireless keyboard.
Even a temporary root access would be grand,if only that kind was still feasible but with no chances of automatic damage.

only way I am aware of is being rooted and flashing the developer image, as resetting will delete the data
The thing is,that build for 6.3 is really bugged out and allegedly corrupted from the talk on the Geforce forums.
Its missing some files for Vendor which I think is greatly important.
Also, you edited when I was amidst the not caring about facts,I was only talking about the facts of them killing adobe flash.
I read in the settings about the account sync function but don't know if it also stores everything for stuff like cookies and the logins for specific stuff like side-loaded browsers such as Opera for Android.

Which build? I have the Pro the 2015 and 2017 are the same purchased mine in 2017 have been bootloader unlocked and rooted since 5.02 every new ota I wait for the developer version and flash via flashfire and I have never had one problem unless I did something wrong. I will tell you this also I know personally of people that have contacted me trying to flash the ota via twrp, you cant its encrypted, I also know of people that thought they knew but tried flashing wrong in flashfire an last not least I know of one gentleman that said his developer image was corrupt, only to find out the problem was it was not acting right with the version of magisk he had installed
Wait,that was for the 16GB device/s.
I have Shield TV Pro (2015) so there only is a chance that it is fine.
The BIG problem is that it will take literally forever to wait for everything to be done due to the large SSHD for any kind of thing.
When I asked if Magisk worked a long while back,I was told that I should use the updated SuperSU instead of Magisk because it also had systemless root added to it and Magisk was known to have stability issues.

Yep like 3 hours but you only have to do it once
Took a bit to find the best place for SuperSU but I only just found out it was put in other hands which luckily they are keeping it alive rather than doing any awful things.
Though the latest version is from nearly a whole year ago by now from May 2017 which makes it an easy chance of something going wrong from any OTA released after that last supersu version since ya never know what might make things not work at all.
Hoping I can get root working, backup all of the app stuff, overhaul the thing then test if swf players work and if they do,I will just have to root again and recover everything to regain all of my apps and data, likely using Titanium Backup since that one seems really popular as the best option for rooted users.
I can always enable full updates then take the next entire OTA to get out of root if that works at all.
Hoping it can all be done using systemless root, otherwise it kills the point of that kind of root,at least for initially backing up everything first.
Recovering all of it via the nuke-everything-once-done action with unlocking bootloader would be okay so long as it ends up working fine if I can't do it all on systemless root.
I should be able to copy/paste browser data if I have to resort to that if systemless root allows folder read/write access in granted root priveliges.
To clarify, now I am on OTA 6.3 so this thread is now moot-point.
Its running perfectly fine at first glimpse, but I do have that stupid keyboard app missing/replaced by russian keyboard issue.
