If (for any reason) you lost the install on your SD card that came with the Evo, I have created a torrent for this.
If you've never used a torrent before, just go and download uTorrent to open the file.
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5609530/HTC_Sync_2.0.31_(Evo_4G)
You may ask "Why use a Torrent?", well it doesn't bog down the xda servers and can offer very fast download speeds when used en-masse.
Enjoy!
Why not just go to the source and get the latest version (which is 2.0.35 by the way):

some people, apparently, can't access it. maybe they're out of country or something. i posted the same link in a thread yesterday, and someone couldn't get it.
I can't get it. it takes me to a screen where it wants you to select your phone, and the EVO is not listed.
v2.0.33 is available further down, but will not install on my Win 7x64 system.
Sorry, it installs, but won't run; some .dll missing, I uninstalled it. I reinstalled as admin, and same thing, uninstalled again.
Can anyone post up the v.35 file somewhere?
thanks
They don't make a mac version, do they?

I had the same thing happen to me (some log.something was missing) with the shiopped version (2.0.31). I just ran the installer again and ran the app after connecting the phone and it worked.
Edit: and yes, you have to disable virus protection (and a reboot after install couldn't hurt either).
It would appear that even on the website (which shows At&T blocked apps) that the sideloading wonder machine is gone.
Dang! wish I had got the sideloading machine.
isnt it still available at android central? Those are the guys who wrote it, I thought...
if at was at androidcentral then you would have to sideload it, completely defeating the purpose.
Why don't you just put the .apk on your phone and install it?

that's sideloading. Anything other than a direct market download is sideloading, and blocked by At&T

Yea...that's what I'm saying. Enable side loading it takes like 30 seconds. It's more of a hassle to use wonder machine.

lol....The Side load wondermachine stays on your computer. You download an .APK file oyu want, plug the phone in and it will side load it to your phone for you. You do not place the APK on the phone at all.
There is also a video on how to use the program:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzs_1DeSgWI&feature=player_embedded
Quote from the website:
"Installation:
Unzip the SWM folder to a conveinent place on your Windows computer. The program, and all files inside the SWM folder need to stay together.
You will need to install the USB driver for your model of Android device. Information about this can be had from your carrier, or from your device manufacturer.
Usage:
Ensure that USB debugging is enabled on your Android device. For most devices, this can be found in menu>settings>applications>development
Plug your Android device into a high speed USB port on your computer.
Start the application, and browse to the apk file you would like to install by clicking the "Choose a file" button.
Once you have chosen the apk to install, the "Go" button will be enabled. Click it, and you'll see the command window which prompts you as it installs the file. "

Root the phone. It's completely safe. If you follow DG's instructions on the thread it's pretty much idiot proof too. And then sideloading will be enabled!
edit: a bunch of other things will be enabled too. and he also has an unroot script there for you.
Yeah, I don't really get this. Download SuperOneClick. You can root your phone and enable sideloading all at once. If you ever want to go back SuperOneClick will also unroot your phone as well. There's no danger doing it this way.
SuperOneClick isn't the best way to root and enable your phone. There is an issue with Busybox. Designergears recommends using aroot to root and enable sideloading. If you used SuperOneClick to root...simply unroot it.
I'm afraid I don't know enough about software to use superoneclick and such.

Hey, i think the best way for you is to do it like it says in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981866
except if you have a bell atrix, i think than youll have to wait a bit so the devs make it for it (im not sure if its a problem tho)
use aroot. I rooted with super one click and also clicked enable outside apps but it didn't work. I then used aroot and everything worked fine.

You didnt try the Sideload wonder machine? Check out all the links and instructions I posted. It is really easy, especailly if you dont trust yourself enough to root the phone.

Seriously, he posts that the SWM is down but I don't think he even knows what the SWM is.
And for everyone telling him to root, transferring files with SWM is so much easier that rooting just for side loading is kind of a waste.
You can also sideload via adb without root.
I've used wonder machine and worked beautifully.
you can always use Droidexplorer or adb
and if you can navigate this website and consciously comprehend what is being discussed (aka process the text on the screen in your mind) you should be able to follow DGs root method
Hi Everyone,
It was brought to my attention that there really isn't a clear explanation anywhere (as far as I know) on how to capture an OTA update file once you've downloaded it (for backup and/or testing purposes of course). So I've decided to write up this brief and simple "How to guide".
1. You need a rooted device
2. You'll need to download and install root explorer or Super Manager
3. Go ahead and download the OTA update BUT once downloaded DO NOT INSTALL yet, hit your back button or simply tap install later.
4. Open root explorer and navigate to the folder that says cache.
5. You'll see the OTA update file in there tap and hold then select copy.
6. Paste file to your external sd card (from there you'll be able to move it to your PC or where ever.
7. Since you have now successfully made a copy of your update (purley for backup purposes of course) navigate to your settings>about phone>system update and this will bring back the option to install the update
Any questions or suggestions I would be more than willing to answer or make edits to the OP if anyone sees a step I skipped or missed
Thanks to DarkRyoushii for the idea
Thanks dLo GSR for the super manager suggestion

cool, i heard a new prerelease update should come
if you don't want to buy root explorer, Super Manager is a good free app as well.
So it just like nandroid ?
Its a full back up of the system? (ghost?)
Its only make a backup of the update? no backup of the system?
Edit:
OH, its backup the Update that available.
but how do i make a nandroid ? without a recovery..
step 1. get a recovery.
step 2. make nandroid.
:3
I'm sorry that was mean, I honestly don't know if its possible without a recovery though :S
Ok, I receive the 1.75 message and did the steps. There were two files in the cache folder and I copy the most recent one. I hope it is what we are looking for.

DID YOU SIGN UP FOR THE BETA?! If yes, please remove it and respect the NDA that you agreed too. We are trying to set a good example at xda by respecting motorola, regardless if it helps us get a bootloader solution earlier. :/
If you didn't sign up and just got the update randomly.. I'm amazed XD

what area do you live in, where you running .26 or .57, did the update pop up or did you check for it manually? Also I don't believe that to be the update. They're usually zip files and the .57 update was around 17mb... weird if that was your only file
he said that there was 2 files but he only grabbed the latest one.. so I'm assuming he only picked up the market.apk (probably from a market update) instead of the .zip
I live in Mexico. I have an unlocked Atrix. I need to be rooted because I use the hotspot app a lot. I didn't sign up any beta or NDA. I just received an OTA message to update to 1.75 two or three days ago. I haven't do that until I'm sure I can continue rooted. If there is anything else I can try please let me know. The other file is not too much different of this one.

as previously mentioned in another thread, press okay and let it download, it will then say install now or install later. YOU MUST CLICK INSTALL LATER. then you can goto the cache file and just incase you get the wrong thing, copy EVERYTHING from the cache folder like instructed in the OP of this thread.

You don't need to root. Hypothetically, let's say you didn't have access to the Play Store and wanted to download and install apps. Just find the apk file for it, such as "File Manager APK," transfer to your phone, then click it to install it. It might ask you to go to settings to allow Unknown Downloads, and if it asked, do so. Only use this for free apps =D
Ah okay perfect! What is rooting for then? Also does anyone know a site that specializes in free APS? Not paid necessarily just apks to get

Rooting helps with some apps that require it in particular, such as Titanium Backup. Rooting alone just helps unlock a few features, although it doesn't add anything until you act (unlike Jailbreaking which adds in Cydia and such). Read here
As for the free apps you can't get from Google Play, just searching on Google might bring something up.
I prefer to just install over adb.
Code:
adb install *.apk

Just pay for them. I used to do what you're talking about and its ****, not only was I ripping developers off and stifling their innovation, I was also wasting time looking for new updates and finding fixes
I don't sideload any paid apps now, if I like the app enough to want to look for the apk, I'll buy it ... If I can't afford it, I add it to my wishlist and purchase it when I can

Also, you should remember there is a risk on installing apps from an unknown source.
If you don't want to use the Play Store, you can download some APKs here, on XDA. Those apps are non-commercial versions released by the greatest developers in the world: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1913 , http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530 .

Okay, I have a question;
There are some free apps that aren't available in some countries. Also, there are some free apps available on specific websites only which aren't on the Play Store (like free apps on XDA, Swype).
I tried emailing a free app to my friend- he has a Nexus 4- but it won't allow him to download the .apk file on his phone and run it. I've also tried to send .apk files to a Galaxy Nexus via Bluetooth but it says that the file isn't supported and fails to be sent on the phone!
Is there a solution to this or is the answer to simply transfer the file via the USB cable?

How are you sending the APK file? Through email? I know some emails block out files that can be 'dangerous'. For example, gmail doesn't let you transfer exe files.
What is the exact error that he's experiencing?

Or he may upload the file to sites such as mediafire. Or change the "Tail" of the file, from exe to anything else, or zip it.

I have the .apk file stored on my memory card of my Galaxy S3. I simply attached it to Gmail and sent it to his email address through my phone. I know for a fact that Gmail does not block .apk files so there's no need to zip them! He said that the phone would not let him install it. I really hope that he has "Unknown Sources" ticked. That would be embarrassing if he hasn't allowed that (he's new to Android and lives far away so it's hard to get a quick reply from him).
But onto my point of sending the .apk file via Bluetooth; it simply would not allow me to send it to a Galaxy Nexus (yes, I know this is a Nexus 4 forum but I feel that I'd experience the same issue on a Nexus 4). The file was not compatible, apparently (although it ran and installed fine on my Galaxy S3).
I simply don't have a Nexus device to test these things with and my friends keep asking me such questions that's why I'm asking around. It'd be great to know the answer so that I can fully recommend Nexus devices to iPhone users.
Alright, this mod is dedicated to mariog, who helped me to not give up on this idea.
Now, on to the MOD...
This mod is a ROM that gives the NST an experience that is as-close-as-possible to legitimate Android. This mod will be flashed using the CWM for NST. There's one problem, I had a release ready, but when I tested it, well that's another story. The point is, I deleted alpha-1 in a fit of rage over it not working, so, I need more devs to help me build this, because A.) I can't dedicate my every waking hour to this. (I'm in school most of the time) B.) Because my first attempt failed even though I looked it over like a Trillion times. Obviously I'm doing something wrong.
In the future, I hope to branch this mod out to other black and white Readers, But at this point, I'm just worried about the NST.
THE MOD WILL INCLUDE:
-The best homescreen possible for the NST (Was using stock 2.1 Eclair launcher, not sure what is best. Launcher 7 looks good)
-Barnes & Noble stock reading apps
-B&N OOBE. (Modified?)
-Android Market/Gapps
-Dropbox included in install
-No bloatware (ie: phone.apk etc)
-Best NST internet browser (opera mini) installed as default browser
-"Chef's freezer" app (look it up)
-Probably more.
-I will also include a minimalistic version. (No: dropbox, browser, freezer, Gapps other than Gmail)
All I need is devs willing to devote just a little bit of their time to this project.
Note: ROM based on android 2.1, I will try to do 2.3 once CM7 support is made for the NST.
Note2: All you readers will be lucky if I get any sort of release anytime soon. Don't rush me. If you want to get this fast, then you can help me! I need beta-testers and devs anyways. No unofficial releases will be made to non beta-testers. If you want them, become a beta-tester!

Original Thread: .
First betatester of course.
And I have made progress! Couldn't unzip the stock update file in Mac or Raspbian Linux. (yes I code with a R-PI) Now, I have borrowed my friends windows machine and success! But, it is slow, and not a permanent fix. How do I unzip the update in Linux or OSX? When I try in OSX the .zip file unzips to .tar.gz and THAT unzips to .zip and so on. I am using the regular OSX unarchiver. In Linux, the unarchive just fails. (Any suggestions on that? I'm good with android, but OSX is a mystery to me)
Anyway, I have most of /system/app done, and I am REALLY exited. It looks like this project isn't going to fail, but I NEED MORE DEVS!!!

It might be because the B&N zips are signed and that causes problems with some unzip programs. Stripping the first 0x1a3 (419) bytes off the start of the file takes the signature off and turns it into a unsigned zip that most unzip programs don't have problems with.

NCT is quite useful, just also useful to know that certain options within it trigger a no confirmation reset to stock. I wasn't intending to deride it. Haven't rerooted since I realized the only tablet mode features I'd been using with any regularity were replacing the screensaver banner with an "if lost, contact" message and a persistent battery bar, with occasional use of a third party reader to download new books without connecting it to the computer
I was already aware of this issue with factory resets. That is why I am wary of including NCT in the ROM.
PROGRESS:
After getting tons of help from friends, I am pleased to announce that release #1 is coming VERY soon. Lots of help has significantly sped up the development process.
What I did:
-adb pushed my modified /system/app (Everything worked great!)
Release will include:
-Launcher7
-Amazon App Store. (No Android Market YET, sorry)
-ADB Konnect.
-Device Registrator
-Opera Mobile
What I don't have working YET:
-Bloatware still exists in /system/app (ie: Phone.apk, Messaging.apk) I don't yet know if it is safe to simply delete them. Release #2 will include a fix.
-No Chef's Freezer. (I have no excuse, sorry)
-No NookColor Tools. (3rd party apps is enabled)
-I don't think that this will be CWM flashable. It will probably be a dd .IMG file, but I am currently not sure.
