Hey - didja know?
Google has removed the way cool green icon WiFi Tether
from Market..
That application makes my Incredible a little powerhouse.
Since I'm always messing around with new roms, I usually
go to Market to get my new dose of Tether. But lately, it
hasn't been there. No mention of it anywhere.
Did a search and discovered that Google has removed the
application from Market. No longer available, period.
So, if you like it and use it, download the APK and use
a Market installer program to get it on your Incredible.
Save that APK in case it somehow goes away forever!
Get it at: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Interesting. I just loaded the market and when I look at my apps, WT is not showing up even though I have it installed.

I rarely tether, but when I do, I've still been using the built in app and go in and make sure I edit the settings (doing the hack). I've still never been billed for it or had any problems. Then again, I'm not rooted.
Its kinda disappointing to me that Google gave in to Verizon and pulled those apps. Not that you can't just download the apk from somewhere else, but its the principle..

I've done the "hack" on the stock ROM before I was even rooted. Works perfectly. Free tethering, without even having to root.

Same here. I am not rooted (yet) but I have never been billed for wireless tether. I also have easy tether pro backed up so I am good to go.

remember if you want the bluetooth tether option, you need wireless-tether, not wifi-tether. Dev has said previously he is separating the functionality between two apps.
Verizon sucks even though I get my bill from them. I have alltel esns er phones I wifi tether 24 7 to 5 computers using wifi hack on an Eris. it's nice to have high speed internet in the woods where internet is not offered. funny thing is wifi tethering is way faster (2mb)than internet on the phone itself(80kb) I have true unlimited internet with alltel esn phones for a measly 9.95 extra per month known as connect3 pack. if you have alltel plan with verizon never never never upgrade or you will lose it forever. there are other ways around it.

I'm an Alltel customer that was picked up by Verizon and I did an upgrade to get my Incredible back in May 2010 and I was expecting to be converted to a Verizon plan but I still have my Alltel all in one bundled plan and I'm not billed the data package from Verizon since my Alltel plan is an unlimited Data/Email/Text plan with 500 anytime minutes, 10 friends and family numbers, and nights and weekends starting at 7pm. I figured it was a fluke that I kept that plan when I upgraded to the Incredible. How do you get around them changing your plan as you get a new phone? Would I need to purchase all my phones full price going foward? I'm guessing with my Alltel plan I'm saving at least $35 or more a month. I have a corporate discount as well but since my Alltel plan is a all in one plan at one prices I get the discount on my full bill but if I switched to a Verizon plan I would only get that discount on the monthly basic plan price and the data plan and anything extra would not qualify for the discount. I would love to keep this Alltel price as long as I can so when it comes time for me to get another phone next year I'm not sure if I should do the upgrade or not chance it and just my next phone out right.
As far as tethering goes, I have both the WiFi tething app as I'm rooted and I have done the "hack" so I can use 3g mobile hotspot. I have tested them both and I get consistantly faster speeds on WiFi tether then I do with 3g Mobile hotspot but they both work great.
Most Roms come with it installed. SR4 does
Just wanted to point somethings out,
Google has not pulled any tether app from the market. Yes, it is true that you can not find Wireless Tether, PDAnet, or any tethering app if you search for them while on the Verizon Wireless Network. They are just blocked if you are their network. If you jump on a wifi network, and do them same search the apps come back up and are not blocked. This is the case for not just Verizon users but AT&T users.

I currently have a Vibrant and have unlocked the wireless hotspot that comes with the phone. I want to get the mytouch but T-Mobile is now imposing a 14.99 tether plan as of November 3rd. I do not use tethering enough to justify that expense, do you guys think we will be able to unlock the tethering that is built into froyo or just use some sort of app off the market to avoid paying the 14.99?

Should work as long as they don't gimp the market like AT&T has.
In either event, hacks to re-enable FroYo's built-in tethering should be trivial.

Yes, gimped. As in, you can't install un-trusted sources. It's an option on every other android handset, except those from AT&T. They pretty much took the best part about Android and neutered it.
Are you rooted? I'm talking about stock settings, where you can't get at the option to change it. Of course, rooting is another story, but having the android market being the only official source for apps sucks ass.
Speaking as an employee of T-mobile, I am seriously confused as to how the company is going to implement these charges. I just got the mytouch 4g as a champion device, and the tethering works just fine for me! I didn't change my account or anything, but then again I am not on a standard account. Now, I doubt that the phone automatically disables the feature when it detects an account without the tethering feature, but maybe T-Mo has something up their sleeve. They like to leave us in the dark with the important details.
Edit: Also didn't consider that maybe it's something to do with the champion device itself. Perhaps they left it unlocked for us to screw with, but I'll test a retail unit soon and see if there's a difference.
I just installed the latest update and am in love with the 5 minutes I have used it. Everything seems bigger and much more pretty. Love the blue theme as well.
Anyway, I now have a "Mobile Hotspot" icon that I never had in previous android. I am on unlimited data right now from ATT grandfathered in. Can I use this hotspot that Gingerbread provided? Will I lose my unlimited data? any negative side effects? Thanks for the help!
Are you rooted?
You must have a tethering plan. For an alternative, you can use a tethering app without rooting, called pdanet. Which you can find on google, not in market. Its on sale for around $16. I love it.

I am 100% stock, no rooting or anything of the sort. My previous installment of Android 2.2 did not have any visible "Mobile Hotspot" icon that I could see within my applications list. Suddenly, this one has it.
I have been with [email protected] forever and am grandfathered in. I was under the impression that if I had a "Tethering" plan that I would lose my grandfathered status. Again, this icon appears in my applications list when I did the 160MB update to Gingerbread last night.
I dont want to use this green "Mobile Hot Spot" icon in my app list if it will change anything on my current plan or switch me out from unlimited. If it shows up in all installations of Gingerbread just for the hell of it thats fine with me, I just need to know not to touch it if its going to change things or charge me haha.

if you don't have a tethering plan and try to use it, it won't authenticate anyway so it won't work.
Your right! It did not validate. So if I find and use PDANET, I run the risk of ATT on my ass about tethering? If I did tether at all, it would only be a little.

Has this been proven? I'm assuming this is the method where you add another APN, the one that is available in gingerbreak I think, or gladroot.. one of them.
Is it known if they can tell about tethering through barncle or pdanet?

I use both and tethering never appeared on my plan. When I try the mobile hotpot app in the phone already, it says I don't have a tethering plan. So pdanet and barnacle don't trigger it. That's my theory.

With 2.3.4 you can edit the entitlement check then use the hotspot app. I have used it numerous times and nothing has changed on my unlimited plan. Checkbthe dev forums for the post on changing the entitlement check. And yes you must be rooted.

I know this is an old post just updating some account info....
If you are on the old grandfathered real Unlimited data plan, never, ever call ATT and ask them to enable mobile hotspot or tethering on your plan. ATT does not provide tethering or hotspots anymore on the enterprise unlimited data plan like they did in 2007 for PDAs.
If you ask them to do it, they will require you to change your plan to one of the two data plans that do allow wifi hotspot and tethering which are 2 and 4GB plans and depending on your usage like me will cost you, even though the low plan is half of what you are paying with the Ent Unlimited.
Its ATTs way of forcing everyone out of grandfathered plans into a new price point for them so they can make more money. Not worth it.
As stated in previous posts in this thread just change entitlement to "disabled" and be done with it, free wifi hotspot =)
And for me it is awesome....
Hey everyone, I just bought my EVO 4g and the main reason I bought it was because of sprints unlimited data. However, after I bought it, sprint lady tells me they charge extra for tethering. If I run cm7 and use the tethering app, will they catch me?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I have never heard of anyone being penalized by Sprint for tethering with a rooted phone before but that does not mean it has not happened. I do use tethering once in a while when I am away from home and need data to my laptop. If you are not going crazy (don't run bittorrent on a tethered phone) then you are probably ok. You do have "unlimited" data (what ever that means) but if you start using more than 10GB a month you may attract attention.

You have unlimited web surfing, email, and pictures. Running up excessive amounts of data by downloading or uploading movies, hosting video games, non-stop usage of a video camera, as well as tethering are all violations of your contract.
Sprint cares more about excessive data usage (whether you are paying for tethering or not) than who is tethering without paying for it, because too much data running through the system affects service. Tethering is just running data to your computer from your phone. They charge the $30 because if they did not, more people would use their phones as their primary internet and run up enormous amounts of data (I DON'T THINK SPRINT AGREES WITH THE 235GB CAP PER MONTH THAT COMCAST ALLOWS). The people who have been flagged by Sprint were all using large amounts of data, and quite a few were actually paying for tethering.
I tether exclusively...i download torrents, music, and everything...been doing it since June 4th 2010...no problems! Tether on friend!
I never paid the $30/month and I tether 15-20GB every month. Never had any problems with Sprint.
I also have an employee discount and only have to pay $60/month. Not bad.
I'm a light tetherer but a heavy data user. I use 6-10gb monthly and I have since I started my sprint contract 4 months ago. Just keep down your roaming as sprint allows only 300mb of off network roaming.
sent from my 7/23 iNfEcTeD EVO 4G
It's just important to be responsible about it.
There's nothing wrong with tethering once in a while when it's necessary, there is something wrong with using it as your home internet connection and not paying the extra fee.
It's important to understand that when you abuse the system you're not just hurting us, you're hurting yourself. Why? Because you encourage Sprint to go the route of others. And if they do that, you won't have the option.
Ive EASILY tethered on 4G 100+GB since May. Ofcourse, 4G is ABSOLUTELY unlimited no matter what. I dont think they monitor 4G as much as 3G, since the 4G comes from Clear, really. I dont tether 3G much at all. But yea, tether away....just dont do anything illegal.

Sprint store employees try to sell sprint's $30 a month hotspot and will tell you that is the only way to tether. I do not have this service, and I tether like a madman and have never been charged. I've used PDAnet, wifi tether, and the cm7 built in hot spot option. You have no need to worry, tether away.

If you are by 4g when you tether then knock yourself out. They don't monitor 4g at all so u can do whatever. But if you use 3g they track the amount of data but its still unlimited. Just like everyone else said. Don't go crazy with the 3g and you will be in the clear.
P.s. I tethered while out of town for a month in a very good 4g area. Easily used 40+ gigabytes of data during that month (torrents and whatnot) and nothing. No message, no extra charge. Zilch. So if your in 4g ur in the clear as far as I'm concerned.

They need to let you know they are changing your plan before they do so. I have been tethering with my phone for years now and ATT has never said anything to and I think it has to do with the amount of traffic. If they see a huge spike of activity and then they look at where that traffic is coming from and they see that you are connecting to battle net then they will know something is up(i know the traffic is not coming from battle net). What I am trying to say is do it within reason, as my guess is the people that they are catching are using well over 2GB a month.
I hope a mod moves this soon... But I heard of at least one person getting nailed with usage <1GB.
i used to tether my blackberry to my ipod touch forever and att has never said anything, i used to use it on my netbook when i went to school too. this was bluetoothtethering. but im think it has more to do with what a user is doing/amount of traffic they are using etc. as for the <gb guy, that may have been a random check or something else. but tethering to play online gaming you will surely get naildd... so use at your own risk knowing the consequences if they/when they find out
I've been tethering for years. I regularly go over 5gb's and at&t has never said anything. I am grandfathered in on the unlimited tho, and I normally only use it for tethering my tablet which is Android so it probably looks as tho it's just coming from my phone. Oh and occasional tethering to my Xbox when my DSL drops out. Lol.

I believe it has to do with the internet stack in the phone. Seen an article a while back on this. If you use a cooked rom they will know if it is based on the stock kernal and rom. If you use something like cyanogenmod they shouldn't ever find out. I think I seen this explanation with verizon tethering and how to get around it.

but that wouldnt explain how i could tether with my blackberry to computers and ipods with no ATT wrath, and i know these are android phones but tethering is tethering..right?
How AT&T can find out?
About four months ago I received a txt from AT&T thanking me for enjoying my trial period of tethering for my iPhone and that a tethering package would automatically be on my next bill. The forum I was on (don't remember where) simply stated that all I had to do was go into an AT&T store and demand that I NOT be placed on the tethering plan. I did that and after a quick phone call from the store to a CSR they pulled it off but with a warning. They said that if tethering activity was monitored again that they would add it back and I couldn't remove it (yeah right).
I was using the MyWi app from Cydia that works perfectly. I used it for nearly two years with no issue. However, the PDANet Cydia app has a "Hide Tethering" option in the program that always made me curious. What is it hiding? MyWi doesn't have that option.
I also used a Windows Mobile phone prior to that with ICS installed and regularly tethered to that as well. I think that ROM was a NotaTreoFan ROM most of the time and then Energy.
I would love the option of adding tethering to my SGS2 but I refuse to pay for a tethering plan. I'm still grandfathered into unlimited data.
Thoughts?

They shouldn't notice anything. I have used barnacle tether on T-Mobile and sprint. So both sim and cdma for a while now. And so far nothing. I'm pretty sure barnacle tether just uses your mobile network and shows up as nothing more than data usage. Bc when using the built in carrier tethering they see the app in use and send that data back. I check my tether stats and network stats and it just shows up as network use. I think you will be fine

With the Vibrant I was using a Team Whiskey rom not the stock rom. Do you think it could be the stock rom or just tmobile being more smart about detecting this now.

I'm only tethering to check work e-mail and that's through VPN, so that may have something to do with it.
I tether everyday, never had this txt message.with stock rooted or custom
From a glaxay better than yours.
I got this message once or twice on my vibrant. I was using my tether a lot and for heavy tasks though.
dont use internet explorer, use firefox. i found out they can detected if you use Internet explorer
Thanks seems to be IE and T Mobile doing a better job at catching it.

I hope Tmo doesn't find a day to block it. I have no ethical qualms tethering without a plan. Tmo has no business telling me through what medium and velocity I go through my 5gb every month.

I agree with that last sentence wholeheartedly!

I use stock rom and I tether my phone to my galay tab and I never received any text msg from Tmobile. My phone is rooted and I have deleted tether management app. Also I use Open Garden Wifi tether app from market. From what I understand, it enables the build in tether but without sending a msg to Tmobile.
All you smart people, please correct me if I am wrong.
I have been using Open Garden WIFI Tether for almost a week without any problems. I just leave it open while driving. My son access it with his IPod Touch and my daughter with rooted NOOK Tablet. So far so good.
Tmo rep here. The tethering plan has always been $15 but Tmo has never really enforced it. They have recently started preventing tethering from working on devices but it is still pretty hit or miss. On my coworker's stock Amaze she is getting blocked even on the employee data plan but on my GS2 I have never been restricted but I've always been rooted.
Starting on the 25th of this month, they will be adding free tethering to 5GB data plans so if you do a a 5 gig plan, just have Tmo update the data feature and you should have no problem tethering. If you are just on a 2GB plan, you should be fine if you are rooted.

God damn, you guys are lucky.
We all know AT&T has some epic systems setup to prevent tethering, at least for the iPhones.
Thank god I haven't been caught yet. ^^

Just called in (had to call in and ask for cancellations to even speak to anyone) the idiot I spoke to never heard of this promotion. Never had a tethering problem until yesterday when I tried it after reading this thread. I never had a problem with my N1 or Sensation. I really hate having to talk to people at Tmo. 90% of the time they are so stupid I'm ready to cancel my contract. I guess I will root and axe the wifi mgmt app and see if it works. If I have to call those idiots again I may be moving to Sprint.
From the wording of the TMO News document picture
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/01/t-mobile-launching-new-hush-hush-promotional-plans-on-january-25th/
it looks like you have to be upgrading to 5gb or 10gb to get this. The person I spoke to today said they always charge for tethering. Just like the dozen people I spoke with 6 months ago told me they always charge for wifi calling and there was no $20 5gb preferred plan. Not sure if dealing with these people is worth the money saved. smh
i juts called to ask about a thing on my bill and they offered me the upgrade to the 5gb for an extra 10 dollars per month, i dont really tether and im always either at my home wifi or my work's wifi, but im reeeally starting to think about sprint here, the problem is i travel overseas and i need a gsm phone.
if not ill switch to simple mobile, a friend has it and he has had no problems so far with it with international calling and 4g for 60 bucks i can be happy with that price, i would have to ask about the quality of the service though and get the unlock code for my phone first.
