Samsung, AT&T holding event on May 5 - Galaxy S II General

Per CNET blog:
excerpt -
"...and now a press conference on May 5, co-hosted by AT&T and Samsung.
The two companies just sent out invites to the event, which will take place in New York starting at 1 p.m, PT, but revealed few details about what they will discuss. The invite does indicate that there will be product demos, so it's pretty safe to assume that we'll see a new phone or perhaps a tablet?
There are a couple of possibilities. It could be the Samsung Galaxy S II, which was announced at Mobile World Congress 2011, but our Android Atlas blogger Scott Webster believes it will be AT&T's version of the Nexus S..."

Infuse 4G, nexus s?

It's probably for that 4.5" Samsung phone (Infuse 4G). It has a Super AMOLED Plus display, but isn't dual core...

Wish it's GS2, I feel Infuse will not be a popular device.

Yes, I noticed that later. When I went to post originally, a list of "similar" posts came up and I reviewed it . None appeared to be the same (but the site was running very slowly so my patience was thin). So I posted.

They can "speak out" all they want, but until they deliver, I'm not buying anything they say. As someone in the comments wrote, "talk is cheap". I honestly don't think ANY carrier / manufacturer is this bad with an update.

This article is why I love Engadget and all of the posts. It can become quite entertaining at times and that thread is very heated. People are beyond pissed off and all Samsung can still say is "soon"? WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT SAMSUNG! They should change the phone name to "The Daikatana 4G."
Let's see if anyone is old enough to get that reference.

Samsung's about to make you it's b!tch!
Daikatana was actually released, you should use DNF as a reference instead.
EDIT how I wish Google did all the software work, the manufacturer just did hardware (and sometimes drivers), and the carrier just provided the service. It'd be like a real computer, and it would work.
Yeah, until we see an official ROM release from Samsung, their statement is nothing more than damage control for bad publicity. Their Twitter "support" was being bombarded with messages last night; it drew much attention from other tech sites. Samsung's next step is to come up with with an official (vague) excuse for the delay and then hope it tides the community over...
It's been half a year, promises are pretty shallow at this point.

So Samsung says "The Reports aren't true." Way to go with some serious insight. I bet their next response will be when someone calls them frauds they'll say "I know you are but what am I?"

Folks keep in mind this was pretty much a direct response to the accusations that they're charging for upgrades. I'm not saying I believe the response or that they haven't been awful at providing an update or adequate communication.
What I'm saying is you clearly have to make accusations to get a response (true or not).

Screw samsung. As much as I love my Epic 4G's hardware, all their support and the community is much smaller. I probably will never buy Samsung again. I might even sell it and eat the ETF once the new androids/windows come out with dual cores.

The problem is when Samsung and Sprint say ASAP it really just means "Another Sorry A$$ Promise."
I'm sorry everyone. I am the reason why we don't have Froyo yet. Let me explain. Every other smart phone I have ever had in the past 5 years on Sprint was an HTC phone. I went through 3 or 4 Moguls, 2 Touch Pros, and 3 Touch Pro 2s. I thought that since I had so any issues with HTC hardware I would try a different manufacturer so I got the Epic. Well.... It looks like the black cloud has followed me! Anyone want to pony up and buy me an iPhone? LOL I'd love to take this black cloud over there!
Well it is nice to hear Samsung open up and say something, but I sure am getting tired of getting the "details will come soon" BS from both Samsung and Sprint. We've been hearing "details will come soon" for more than 4 months. Perhaps we have different definitions of the word "soon."

I think with another other carrier releasing the 2.2 update for a SGS phone, it will put pressure on other carriers to follow. No longer can they say it's someone else's fault.
But honestly, I bet we'll see noobnl release an operational version of Gingerbread before we see Sprint push 2.2 out.

If Kry says he's legit, he's legit. I wanna throw my guess to the big announcement-I think that they will not only release source but will have Vanilla android builds for those not wanting to wait for Touchwiz customizations (w/bloat obviously).

I am a bit skeptical about this announcement since user complaints seem to have fallen on deaf ears for a number of months. However, I hope this will really be something substantial that will sway myself and many other users towards purchasing samsung phones again instead of holding up #neveragain signs. If samsung would be willing to fix my GPS on my vibrant that would be amazing.

An announcement as to if and when T-Mobile gets a galaxy 2 is what I would like to know. The vibrant 4g is the phone the vibrant should have been out of the gate 6 months ago but I think that was probably tmobiles decision. We probably could have had the international version if tmobile had asked for it. My concern is that if they are getting the 4g version vibrant at the end of this month then its going to be a fairly long time if ever that we get the full featured galaxy 2.

May 5th AT&T/Samsung Announcement

http://www.androidguys.com/2011/05/02/att-samsung-announcing-nexus-5th/
a couple of android sites are reporting that they've been invited a press event where they'll have a "special announcement" i'm hoping it's about the SGS2 but more likely it'll be either the Infuse or the AT&T Nexus S. but you know... hope springs eternal.

not counting the kyocera echo of course
OP, the majority of people in that old thread "In USA: Where to Pre-Order" think this is the Samsung Infuse and not the Samsung Attain yet, in my opinion the AT&T's version of SGS2, because of the first 3 letters. There is no way VZW, Sprint or TMOB are taking that name. Well TMOB could.

That review is not correct.
I just received that exact phone last week, from Amazon. Each Galaxy Note has a region code to indicate where it came from (Mine was from the UAE). This code can be changed to any region you want. This will allow for a stock upgrade to ICS, when it comes out.
Also, just like the previous poster said, you can root and put any rom you want on your Note.
I am running the stock ICS beta, from January. For me, it is awesome. I am running at 213 DPI which gives me the tablet mode look.

So you neither discredit nor credit what is posted on xda and Amazon reviews nor do you place credibility on the opinions or facts of those places above what you personally believe which is based off the things you read which may or may not have any significant validity as to its claims, which is still eclipsed by the fact that you take everything with "a grain of salt" that is on the internet, which is the place you have come to with a question seeking an answer.
I think you should meet with an authority figure who you can't discredit, in person (to eliminate the internet factor), so you can get the facts.
I know the perfect person, he can be found in a mirror.
P.S. stay free
It'll get updated to ICS. Don't worry. But it will be layered with TouchWiz. In this year, Samsung will not be stupid enough to cut the cord on a 3 month old device. That would be pure suicide. The PR nightmare.
Basically true. My conclusions is derived from all the information I've gathered with consideration of credibility of the various sources.

Reviews and hands on not out so far. Why?

Anyone here has any info on why there are not many reviews or hands on by any of the tech sites? We had more leaks and even reviews before the handset was released but even after 4 days of official announcement, there has not been much coverage about the device. Most of the tech sites only talk about the specs. That looks a little odd. Maybe there is some restriction on publishing reviews of the device till 13th?
Most likely the sites got their phones after the reveal on noonday, Androidcentral has got their unit and they were the ones who broke news about the GLONASS feature . Thus they need a couple of days to try it, probably under NDA until Google says so. They will probably time it with the delivery on the 13th or 17th or whenever it is supposed to launch they want to spread the hype over time to create mindshare and pick up some space in the news-cycle.

This is exactly why. If you read the Android Police teaser review, you'll notice he says he had to run somewhere in New York to pick up the review phone Google had. These are the phones they'd have handed out if the press event had happened as planned, but with Hurricane Sandy cancelling the event, things have been thrown a little off-track. I'm ok with that, too, because the reviewers will have more time with the phone and can give us a more in-depth review.
Patience...
