Is anyone with a mac having problems connecting to the Tab with their mac? I downloaded the Android File Transfer Utility from google but it crashes every time I connect it.
I'm having the same problem. Currently i'm transfering files using micro sd cards and ftp. Though it's not ideal. I hope some devs can fix this :/

Ok so at least it's not a hardware problem for me.. I'm guessing it has to do with Acer's somewhat proprietary USB sync bloatware on the the device..
Why they didn't use mass storage or at least have an option for it is beyond me. Still, the interface and snappiness is pretty damn sweet. Gonna wait to see over the next 43 days how the reviews and my experience with the Iconia compare to the Asus. So far I'm leaning to keep the Acer.

The reason Honeycomb uses MTP over mass storage is so that both your computer and the tablet can access the storage simultaneously.
Remember that official Froyo APPS2SD is quite limited due to the storage being dismounted from the device when attached is USB mass storage mode.
Regards,
Dave
Ok, so I just uninstalled the acer sync app (read bloatware) off of my Tab and will do some testing to see if it has any effect will Mac syncing. Hopefully that will be the problem and I can get back to work on my dev stuff.
*update* no change
I am on win xp and having minor usb issues. i see no way of "safely" pulling out the usb cable. I am connecting teh acer to a usb hub and every time i reconnect i need to unplug he hub and plug it back in for the device to be recognized. works fin3e after that.
Well I'm just going to have to return this thing. I REALLY love it.. but without USB support it's useless to me. Acer support doesn't even recognize it as a problem. What makes things worse is that I paid for it with a debit card at best buy.. so it'll take 10 BUSINESS DAYS to get a CHECK from Best Buy.
Maybe I'll just sell on ebay or something
Having the same issue!!
TrevFMT: I saw your question to google about it!
The thing that sucks is that it was working fine for me a couple days ago (4/32 4/3); and now the Android File Transfer application tries to open automatically when I connect the Acer to my mac via USB, but keeps crashing before it can fully launch.
The USB connection is important to me as well.
I'm thinking it's something strange with the OS; perhaps I made a change I'm not aware of after downloading some apps. I downloaded File Station, but I deleted it today when I started having the issue with Android File Transfer app.
If anyone can figure this out it would be much appreciated!!
OK, I have some good news and some bad news!
Good news:
I got the Android File Transfer app to launch and work correctly!
Bad news:
I had to "reset the software back to factory default configurations"; in other words, I had to loose all the sweetening I did to my A500 because I couldn't single out and identify what actually caused the problem in the first place.
Anyway, I've started over and hopefully the forthcoming updates to the OS will offer a fix.
*UPDATE*
For me, the problem appears to have something to do with the 4GB microSDHC card (SanDisk) I purchased this morning. After inserting the card, I can no longer get the Android File Transfer app to launch on my mac when I connect the A500 to it via USB -it just crashes. Even if I remove the card and try to connect again, it still crashes. But when I "reset the software back to factory default configurations" again, I can connect the A500 to the mac and the Android File Transfer app launches without any problems. So, it appears that the card does something to the OS.
Perhaps someone who knows the OS better than I do can figure out why this happens ...
Workaround
Macs don't natively support the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), i.e. what Honeycomb is now using. Google's file transfer app isn't yet ready for prime time. Until they fix it, there is a open source workaround application called XNJB that works fine.

LOL...nice graph. Just tryin' to help the Apple fan boys out you know
Kidding aside, I am a software developer by trade (mainly .NET). I design/build enterprise level applications for fortune 500 companies. I also use Linux, OSX, Android, and I have an iPhone. I used to think the same thing about Apple after 15 years of Windows and Linux, but OSX is actually a really nice POSIX-compatible OS with BSD roots. I grew up programming on 8088s, C64's and Apple II's in the 80's. I just have a general love of OS's and computing in general...hence my nickname "motley".
I use a Mac at home and run VMWare Fusion so I can run Ubuntu and Windows as VMs and have their applications provided seamlessly all on one desktop. My favorite OS is Linux though, I have to admit.

The same thing happened with me using both microsd and a USB ext hd. XNJB works just fine though.
its not a mass storage right?how do i eject it safely?
I have a Macbook Pro and really, I've given up on actually plugging it in to a USB port. Honestly, I've found it more reliable to use a flash drive for transfer or (even more interesting) my NTFS external hard drive. I use my 1TB Toshiba external hard drive to transfer all kinds of movies and such to the tablet.
Now if this didn't have a full USB port, we'd have issues, but as it's the only one currently available* with Honeycomb and full USB port built into the tablet itself (not to mention rooted NTFS support), I could not even dream of returning this tablet.
*only one available as far as I know

Universal has WIFI so youd be better off just mapping a network drive or something rather than using bluetooth which is very slow.

That would be a PC Its certainly possible that somebody could make a card for the SDIO slot that would support USB Hosting but I am not aware of one.
Better wait for cheaper 4 gigabytes sd cards
Hi jimcl,
You have the same idea as me! I was thinking of hooking up my external 60GB HDD to my Exec using just a normal camera USB cable. As you have thought, it didn't work. Wouldn't it be great if things just works the way we wanna them to be?
I assume that if it works, the battery on your Exec will dry up very quickly as the HDD draws its power from it.
Anyway, if you find anything that allows you to do that, please post it out here and share it with everyone!
Cheers!
Regards,
Johnnie
Wifi would be much better, and is already available, but they are not designed for mobile use, mains supply required.
SDIO to USB is, I think is in the pipeline, but prehaps a better solution would be SDIO to Wired Ethernet, more likely to find this for PDA's with no Wifi, and USB/Ethernet hard drives are available now. Although ethernet drives still require mains supply but USB ones would suck power to quick from the host
I think we will see host controllers as standard in future PDAs.
I know the 5Gb is not particulary good on the Toshiba device, but I doubt it will be long before the capacity increases.
I must admit, SD/MMC cards are a better way to go and I think 8gb is in the pipeline now and prices will drop over time.
of course I'll share the solution... in case I find it!
I more or less agree with all your comments... but sometimes we just want to work with the things we have, ... I already have a mobile hard drive. That's all.
Apart from 4GB SD cards - and future 8GB - maybe we could find a solution in the WIFI way, but anyways 8GB SD card sounds great - maybe not its price..
If your looking for a solution for home or car try the asus WL-HDD wireless access point / hard drive
I picked one up off ebay for 50ukp with a 60 gig drive in it,
Also lets you copy stuff from other usb devices to the hard drive (without a pc) or share other usb devices over the wireless (with new firmware from asus).
http://reviews.cnet.com/Asus_WL_HDD_2_5/4505-3382_7-31080278-2.html?tag=nav
Power wise it needs 5v @ 2 amps
Being linux based there is also some hacked firmware that will let you use other usb devices or turn it into a webserver and other things..
http://wl500g.info/
currently selling in the uk without drive for around 36ukp (scan)

Yes, you can connect the Universal to the hard disk directly WITHOUT going through a router/access point using Wi-Drive, here:-
http://www.edslab.com/products.htm
Spoken to the developer 2 days back and was told that it'll be ready this coming August. It'll be released with a 30GB hard disk as this will be more affordable to the public. If you need higher capacity hard disk you'll need to install it yourself.

You da man!! Seems like an awesome software .. However, what kind of cable you would need .. because HTC TyTN is only mini-USB but the projector would need a monitor cable ..
Best guess on the cable at this stage: "Google is your Friend...."
Ok that google is your friend, but do you know what is the cable. Because here whe are talking about a output image to other device, this is possible using a cable, wich one. I know that is some new projectors that have a bluetooth connection and one sd connector (too expensive) that do this. But i havent head nothing about cable connection.

Basically, a mini-USB to VGA converter. Also, "NYDITOT Virtual Display" is for connecting to an external display but what's the point of the software really without a cable?
Sorry bud, but I haven't seen any external mini-USB adapters to date.

Well I'm glad somebody is going to be producing one of these... I do hope it's sturdy enough to get through a couple presentations, too!
Best of luck!
PS. I think my initial comment still applies -- you're going to need a screen scaler to work with this device (otherwise, your presentation will be 320x240 resolution!)
PPS. I haven't found any information that says the MicroSD slot is SDIO compatible (and I have no way of testing)... I hope it is though!
Pocket Controller is your solution.. works when connects any PPC to the PC using USB-Activesync...
Sorry for the time to reply...
Nyditot works in you TyTn? i need a Hard Reset every time I tried to change the resolution...
What you can do is buy a usb to vga converter, then buy a cable to can convert the usb to mini usb and your all set. Then you just need the software for the resolution.

You're kidding, right?
This this:
http://www.spectec.com.tw/sdv842.htm
I saw them at CES and they have lots of SDIO products. They were using the a prototype when I was there. It was Micro SD but I did not recognize the phone. It definitely not a states phone.
It worked well though.
Ever heard about that?
Yesterday I received my ShowMate (http://www.impatica.com/showmate/). It is a bluetooth/vga adapter. So far it is working pretty good, but didn't had enough time for hardcore-testing.
But you have to know that you need a software on your pc to convert your ppt's. And you also need a software to project (and resize) your converted presentations.
There is also another bluetooth adapter
http://www.infrablue.co.uk/index.php?a=irmabluetooth
I think, you also need software to convert your presentations for this adapter.
Impatica is currently working on a solution to show your hole ppc-screen as you can only show the presentations with the current releases.

How it can looks in the real :
on picture you see a USB hub (without external power), a self made Y cable, LEO1024, USB mouse, USB Memory Stick and a bunch of cables.
I can see data on USB stick inside file explorer and can control device by mouse (cursor invisible by default). White cable go to USB male which used as VBUS 5V source.

nice , good job Bro
Wow, impressive work! I don't use the HD2 anymore, but it's bloody great to see some real good dev work being done on it, especially for WM6.5!
is that mean i can browes my flash memory from my HD2 ?!!
Class, able to use a mouse on the HD2 brilliant! Keep up the good work
Hi Cotulla!! you finally made it!
I´m your early "beta tester" from Argentina, we chatted via msn some months ago. Sadly I don´t have the HD2 anymore to try this again. I have an DHD now and there are some people trying to develop this same thing for the DHD.
Congrats!:
Cotulla, please port this to Android. I don't have an HD2 anymore, I upgraded to the Sensation, and i would LOVE to see this on there!
Thanks for not forgotten Windows Mobile 6.5. I am so grateful to see some continue development on this.
A great project, thanks for our big Bro... 謝謝老大。
Great work Mate....
I will flash win6.5 again just to check this....
I might move back to Windows!! Thanks for the great work Cotulla!
Brillant !
I try it with a mouse, it"s fine.
And this evening, I'll try with a 1 Tera mass storage.
A HD2 with 1 To : Where are all the challengers from any brand ?
done a little 5 euro donation (i'm a student and i'm very poor...but i appreciate your hard work!!!)
GO GO GO Cotulla, we hope in a USB Host in Android too, a new MAGLDR, and a Mango 7720 build for our HD2
Thank you for your hard work! What software do I need to connect a mouse? I don't see cursor. USB HDD and keyboard works fine.
For me - USB Stick conflicts with microSD card. If I remove it and reboot, USB Stick works. Else USB Stick not detected.
Wow, the awesomeness of this is too awesome to describe. Very good work Cotulla! I wish I had a HD2 now
Very good work. Congratulations.
The linux of wince htc kernel has had USB host support for a long time now. You don't need to revert to WM6.5
Aim for OP is to do that on Winmo.
Cotulla is king
Thanks for developing. Do you have plan start usb host on android ?
It is only for HD2 or will this work too on Acer Neotouch S200?
Any one tried to connect gamepads? Il try if i get one from my friend. Is gamepad.hid working with leo?

Man you're a genius!
So I recently switched from Windows 7 (32-bit) to Windows 7 (64-bit) because I upgraded my memory to more than 4GB and ever since I've been unable to reliably connect to my Epic 4G through adb. Before the upgrade I had no issues with connectivity and even creating a VM (Windows 7 (32-bit)) on the same machine connects to the phone ok. Have been searching for a solution for a while but haven't come across anything. The phone appears to connect ok in Win 7/64 but quickly goes offline.
Other android devices I own are working fine in Win 7/64 so I'm wondering if I'm just missing something or if the Samsung drivers have an issue with Win 7/64. Thanks in advance for any info...
did u try DL drivers again ? = worked 4 me when I went from 32 to 64 myself
I let Windows Update update my drivers and they work great on my 64 bit Gateway.

The Win 7/64 was a clean install. However I have tried uninstalling all the devices from the device manager, rebooting, re-installing the Samsung exe, rebooting again and connecting the phone. Have also tried using USBDeview to remove any left over registry entries and what not.

Grrr... It still works off and on. Certainly not as reliable as my Win 7/32 laptop (or VM). Do you guys with working connections have to retry things often and/or disconnect/reconnect?
This is the kind of stuff I get:
Code:
C:\Users\ccharlton>adb shell
$ exit
exit
C:\Users\ccharlton>adb shell
$ exit
exit
C:\Users\ccharlton>adb shell
The last 'adb shell' command just hangs as does everything else until I dis/reconnect (ie: adb logcat). I can successfully repeat the same commands all day long on my Win 7/32 laptop/VM so I'm not sure...
Have you tried a different cable than the stock Samsung cable?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Yup, bad cable. Get a heavy duty Blackberry or Palm Pre cable.
I went through the same thing on win 7 64 on my buddies pc and we tried literally everything. He ended up swapping his motherboard at one point and low and behold it worked fine... I honestly think that microusb is so touchy that certain USB busses have compatibility/power issues, especially with non standard applications like odin or adb commands of any kind. On my PC I can only use my onboard USB ports. The ones on the front of my PC absolutely will not make it through a oneclickroot or Odin, yet I can plug into them and transfer data and charge my phone no prob. Very frustrating.
getting win7 to detect + load drivers for your samsung device is a bit trial/error, where the PC auto detecting + loading drivers part usually works out fine but the SDcard file won't mount (even after tapping 'USB connected/Mount') .......have experienced a conflict where the drivers were obviously installed yet MyComputer would not show the device as an external drive (to the mounted SDfile in the Epic)........in that instance have instead Odin'd the device and flashed a ROM (proving the usb cable was ok)........thereafter have been able to run SWUpdater --again, using the supplied samsung usb cable-- or else mount the SD card direct to the win7 and work w/ the SD file in MyComputer, something that it had not allowed me initially to do.
Edit: was on the PC last night (win7professional 64 bit) and experienced this very issue again , the external card on the device mounted (w/ PC notification beep), but not viewable as external drive.......tried changing various cables, + finally re-booted both the PC + Epic (was not going to ODIN as i did last time w/ this issue), and FINALLY the D: drive appeared!.............very likely (as others on this thread have suggested) the cable is the culprit, what else could it be?
Ya I'm at a loss here...
- All three USB cables I have work fine w/ another laptop (Win 7/32), on the same laptop while redirected to a VM (Win 7/32, different system drivers since it's a VM), and in the past on the same laptop when it was Win 7/32...
- I get connected for a brief period of time if I connect/reconnect (it's a crap shoot and honestly something like 'adb logcat' will run forever [when it works] as long as I don't disconnect)
So I'm not really sure what the issue is as there as so many potential targets. Very frustrating...
I have trouble now and again where i get a lockup when transfering files(using winxp) to my epic and explorer crashes.
I cross my fingers whenever im transfering large files. Im also using the latest samsung driver off thier site.
Ive also used many different types and quality of cables and all of them act the same. Bleh

Install & run this app (requires root) Funky Fresh Samba Share:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba&hl=en
Now, any USB hard drive you have connected to your Amazon Fire TV can be shared using SAMBA network protocol. You can have 10 hard drives connected to one AFTV and share ALL of its contents over your network with other AFTV's and computers. Instant NAS! And it even works while the AFTV is in SLEEP MODE!
There are TWO inconveniences with this type of setup that need to be solved:
When you reboot your AFTV, you have to launch and enable file sharing again.
You cannot sync Kodi across all of your AFTV's. Remember, it still cannot be used as a MySQL server, it's just a NAS. For example, you will have to set up sources for each AFTV and update each AFTV individually instead of sharing the same Kodi video database...this is not a big deal since you can set Kodi to SCAN FOR NEW CONTENT each time it starts up.
If only there was a mySQL server for Android, then you could run MySQL on one of the AFTV's and have all the other ones synced up to it!
I think these two issues are merely inconveniences and not deal breakers. However, it would be cool if we could figure out how to solve them.
If you use 2.5" laptop hard drives, you can create a very low power, always-on NAS device that uses only 3.3 Watts of power!
UPDATE: Funky Fresh Samba Share has been pulled from the Play Store, it's attached. Just rename it from .ZIP to .APK
The problem with this, at least for me, i get very slow speed with wifi transfers (around 1.5 mb/s ) it take ages to transfer or copy big files.
I dont know about wired network. ..

I think that's because your wifi is slow. My AFTV is connected via ethernet and I get 58MB/s copy speed.

XDA's image attachments don't seem to be working, so here it is again.
How is this usage different than plugging an USB drive to my router so every device on my LAN including AFTV can access the files on it ?
I mean what can this setup do that a share drive plugged into a router won't ?
Could be that my wifi is slow. But i would like to know from others if they get good speeds with this setup using wifi?

My aftv works as a server, but I prefer my rpi openelec, probably because it's hardwired, it's a good server, extremely low powered and I hate to see it go to waste. I use aftv as a samba server but most of the files I play on it are from my rpi.
I have a good router , Linksys wrt1900ac with stock firmware, my download speeds are fast on WiFi over 125mbps but file transfers are slow. Doesn't effect streaming video from online or local but I get about 3.5 mbps transfers. I usually only need to move one at a time so it's not a big hardship but if anyone knows of any tweaks I'd be interested.
Fyi--when I first started using samba I just did it from my wireless MacBook to other wireless devices and it worked fine for streaming. So I'd encourage you to try the aftv as a server if it's just the transfer speeds that are your concern. You can always change your mind.

Not everyone has a router that allows you to plugin a USB drive.

The usb port built in the firetv will limit you to usb 2.0 speed. 58 MB/s sounds to high to transfer over 100 Mbs network and go over usb 2.0. Should be around 30 or 40 MB/s real life max over network alone not to mention going on to a usb hard drive that i can only imangine is hooked up to a 10 port usb hub since you said you could hook up 10 hdds meaning that every drive on the hub would again be slowed down to compensate.

Are you sure it's only USB 2.0? I have this hard drive hooked into my AFTV:
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-Drive-STDR2000100/dp/B00FRHTSK4/
If it really is USB 2.0, then I have no idea how it is transferring so quickly?
Anyone else got a USB 3.0 drive, plug it in and let us know what speed you're getting.
This is the file copying app I used: https://codesector.com/downloads (make sure you turn on ENABLE WRITE BACK CACHE, it copies faster)
I know that a USB hub will share the bandwidth among all devices connected but hopefully, all devices won't get accessed at the same time.
Its USB 2.0 says it right on the page for it

Hmm, then I don't know how it's transferring at 58MB/s?

i have installed samba share just for the heck of it, going straight from pc to firetv and max speed i get is 6 MB/s . One nice thing though i was able to at least watch a 10 gig mkv from usb on firetv to pc with no stuttering.

TeraCopy = megaBYTES
Acutally...isn't USB 2.0 good for up to 480 megabits?
That means 480 / 8 = 60 megaBYTES, so 58MB/s is still within spec.

What's your network speed? Mine is a gigabit Ethernet home network. It's a brand new house.
Send the following Intent to broadcast receiver at boot to automatically start the samba server on boot:
com.funkyfresh.samba.RESTARTSAMBA
I use tasker to do this.

Yes, if you are rooted you can install the PlayStore. If you are not rooted you could sideload it, grab the apk from your phone and install it on the FireTV.
Thanks for the info. Trying to get this working. I have a rooted AFTV and have installed Samba Filesharing for Android. When I try to add "Second Shared Folder" under "Other Fileshare Settings", I get the error "No other read+write FAT based filesystems were detected."
I'm testing with a USB flash drive which is formatted as FAT32.
Is there anything special that needs to be done to an external drive for it to be recognized?
Thanks!
