Gingerbread Discussion Anyone? - Epic 4G General

I was gonna ask what others are looking forward to in 2.3 in the other thread but it got locked =/
So what is everyone looking forward too? Got a specific thing? Me personally I heard Sensor was fixed. No more emulator fix needed =) and obviously an update, which is always a great thing.

I want 4g. Oh wait gb wont solve that. Lol. I want a new modem that doesn't have my signal go from full bars to the 1x while I'm in the same spot.

This is more of a Samsung/Sprint build thing for the upcoming GB 2.3 build but i read they fixed it so that if you're using the AUX Out, like in your car w/ pandora, and you get a call it routes the sound through your headset so you don't have to unplug it. And yes wtf is up with no 4g in PHX STILL!

Seriously. +1 that,
Similar note. I'll be in a phone call and there's no Bar's, so I gotta end call then it'll go back to 3bars. Jumps around alot.
Edit: I get 4G connection in my house but sadly, my 3g is faster.. wtf is with that?

my coworkers that have gingerbread (droidx and nexus one) say their battery life is noticeably better. So yeah... that.

We've got 4G all over my city. I even turned it on a couple months ago. The problem for me is that I *never* get it indoors, anywhere. So leaving it on and searching for a signal it rarely finds just sucks up battery with no benefit to me. It's really the biggest disappointment to me, since I spend a lot of time inside, and when I'm outside I'm typically not using my phone much anyway.
With regard to gingerbread, I haven't heard much that gets me excited about it. I'm loving Syndicate ROM and will definitely wait until the ACS team does something with it (gingerbread) before I consider giving up what I've got right now for it.

no what i was saying is if u press and hold the screen then select gallery pic a picture before it would onle be 1 box that you can expand or make smaller now you can pic between a portait or landscape. try it lol. also if you go into battery usage they have a graph of everything thst is using ur battery. my phone has been on for 5 hours with only 1% tws

Tws doesn't decrease battery. Only causes graphical appearance of less battery. I've always had 0% tws

I second this.
Although I haven't tried CM7 Beta for the Epic, I have had an EVO on CM6, and every version since then on my G1. So, I definitely been around the block with Cyanogen Right now I'm running SyndicateROM and think its great.
I guess GB would be better... But, I'd rather have a more stable and feature-full phone.... Lets be honest, there is a lot of unstable **** on this phone...And I'm gonna have to say, All in all, my EVO was a lot more stable.... I admit, I miss: Wiimote + kickstand + Emulators = hours of fun. So, I hope to god my Epic will be able to do it too! ( - kickstand )
Blow Samsung out of the water please. Both of you teams! Please make the Epic, EPIC!!!

I honestly don't know what all the hype is about the evo.. a lot of people not just urself make the evo seem "epic" and I bought into all that was said so I traded my buddy for his evo, and well yeah the sceen bigger but id take AMOLED anyday of the week! And that processer ontop of sense kinda reminded me of my moments days lol, idk I guess maybe the evo a good phone I just really prefer the epic

There is no doubt that i love the Super AMOLED screen. There is WAY more physical things about the Epic that make the EVO look like it was over-hyped... I completely agree...
But i was just mentioning that CyanogenMod on the EVO, is pretty sweet, and i cant wait for a stable release on the Epic. It will have Wiimote support right? (crosses fingers)

I wish the epic got what it deserves. It has the best hardware in sprint. Its an amazing phone. But its soo under appreciated.

It's posts like that where I think people really aren't paying attention to their signal. i've been streaming music from pandora or watching a youtube video and i've seen my signal drop to 0 and then come back, and it's not just "a graphical appearance of less battery" it is actually dropping the signal and then re-authing to sprint's towers... It's a fairly serious thing that noticeably decreases battery life.

Traded away my Vibrant for a Mytouch 4G.. and i almost regret it!

I miss the Super amoled screen
Pros:
FFC
HSPA+
LED FLASH
FM RADIO
Physical Buttons + Dedicated Camera Button
Great build quality
Cons:
No Super Amoled Screen
No 16GB Internal Memory
No more Bionix :/
I don't regret it as much but going from a Super Amoled screen to a standard screen really made me realize how great my Sammy Vibe really was! I took it for granted!! You will be missed! (EXCEPT THE GPS ISSUE)
Well i jumped ship.. can't wait for the SGS2 though! Hope to catch up with some of you guys later in the SGS2/HTC SENSATION threads!
Goodbye!
Especially you s15274n. You have been really helpful! Without you knowing. lol
The bionix team and whitehawkxx wish you guys the best.
heading over the the MT4G/Glacier forum now. Peace!
Yeah i feel you man. My wife got a Mytouch 4G and its really nice, i mean really nice, but the Samsung Vibrant has the better screen with the Internal Storage that came way in handy for me. I rooted her mytouch 4g up already and put on some Gingerbread which i love with everything working, and the Vibrant still dont have everything working on Gingerbread. Well i guess ill be seeing you over there. I go from the Vibrant forums to the Mytouch 4g forums, switching out like crazy. =D

Yeah true its just GPS not working. But also the Battery drain on the phone is terrible, which is really irritating. But once battery drain is fixed then i'll probably be back on CM7 or MIUI.

Wait, I have an extended battery, so I completely forgot. *facepalm*
Sucks, but if I didn't have this battery, I always have a place to charge the phone. And I heard the drain isn't as bad as it used to be.

I agree with you, but since i didn't buy a new phone and simply traded i feel that jumping ship wasn't a bad choice. I still plan to upgrade!
Also the MT4G can be resold for a higher price than the Vibrant on craigslist.
BTW... WINNING!
To any CM7 users of vibrant and another phone with CM7(nexus one,MT4g,G2 etc.) are there any other difference in speed? I'm using Cm7 on vibrant but i can't compare it cause it's my only phone.
I picked up a g2 for cheap but still have my vibrant. I don't know what all the fuss was about. This doesn't feel any faster than my kb5 vibrant, and the "build quality" just makes it feel heavy and bulky. Its a decent phone overall, but not any better overall than my vibrant.

Traded the Mytouch 4G for a G2.. G2 is a way better phone than the Mytouch 4G. Some people don't miss keyboards.. but you are crazy not to have a keyboard!! Bought the game gripper and wow.. just wow. The G2 is an overall fun phone and great speed/development/great everything!! Even the hinges on this unit are amazingly stronger than the other g2's i have used.
I really like my wifes mt4g. I began to dislike my G2 before I sold it. It felt like a phone meant for someone that doesn't know how to dress themself. It's hard to explain.

Not quite sure what about the SGS 4G would renew your interest in comparison to the Vibrant, unless you are in a 4G area and just really CRAVE the extra bandwidth so much that you won't miss the internal 16GB from the Vibrant (4G only has 1GB internal).. And of course, FFC.... which really AFAIC is a "bell and whistle" that 99% of people use once and never use again.

Add the bad/good screens, dust under the screen issues, bad eMMC chips that are said to cause bricking, creaky buttons on a few units, and off centered FFCs on a few. I wanted to trade as well, but a look at the forums steered me right away.
Well, the only phone I'm moving to when I get the chance is the SGSII, no matter what.
I love HTC phones but plenty of those are CDMA only and that doesnt work in my country :[
I bought the mytouch4g back in January and it was so great to have a phone that worked well right out the box and every custom gingerbread rom I've put on it has ran smoothly. However, I find myself constantly going back to my Vibrant. I miss the screen and I feel like the Vibrant has a lot more devs working on roms. I was just about to sell my Vibrant so I could have a few extra bucks when I read about the GPS fix. If I can find the perfect Gingerbread rom I will be keeping my vibrant until Samsung releases a dual-core phone for T-Mobile.

[Q] Thinking about getting an EPIC, can people help with a bit info on it?

I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.

GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I wanna play Nova with a gyro not a touch screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL MOVE OVER TO IPHONE JUST FOR THe GYRO, if still no phones/apps on android support it in Nov.
the keyboard is great for using Terminal Em. or punching in passwords. But ya it might not be worth the bulk..

I don't see anything about the Epic anymore in the Epic forum. It's all about the SGSII, Evo3D, I'm leaving...wahhhhhhh..cry me a river please, give me lunch money back, etc.
Would be nice to see stuff about the Epic again in the EPIC forums.
I'd much rather read noobnl posts/threads than sift through more and more threads on devices like the Evo/Evo 3D/etc which have nothing to do with the Epic and don't even belong here in the first place, or people griping about how the Epic is undersupported and 'woe iz us' and proudly boasting which manufacturer/device they're moving to because of it and why and all such blather as that as if everyone both wants and deserves to read it.
At the very least noobnl's threads and the reactions within them have some semblance of entertainment value usually.
This is a great phone and there are a ton of fun and interesting things to do with it. I guess I'm just not jaded enough because I don't buy the newest latest 3x a year for full price. No offense to those who do, but the Epic for me at least has plenty of life left in it.

A limited amount of items left to fix?
Outside of TV out, I am not really sure what there is left to improve on my Epic
The ROM fast and stable, battery life lasts all day, my signal and call quality are great, I couldn't be happier with my theme, tethering works with 4G... whats left?

Putting Cyongenmod 7, MIUI, AOSP, HTC Sense 3.0 and Touch wiz 4.0 on this phone for starters. So we can assure long term development on our devices.

No offence, but what is the point of this? To rag on a member? I have not been here long, or post often, but if you are saying the Epic forum is going to **** due to threads like Noobnl's, then what is this thread for?
Threads like this are why, counter productive and flamebait.. noobnl whether you like him or not, even if you think he stole everything he ever released, he still contributed more than 3/4s of the people talking ****..

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

Yes, you are absolutely right. The updated ROM from Sprint will never be rooted.

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

PS. Don't knock the Site, or the Dev's. The work they do is because they want to, it's not an obligation.

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Rooting in and of itself isn't going to make a damn bit of difference in battery life. It's what you do with the root that counts... lol, sounds like a phallic joke gone bad...

Cool story, bro......

Well ladies and gentleman I did the unthinkable. I was going to hold out for the galaxy s2 but I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the EVO3D. I just want to say thanks to devs, trolls, mods, friends, cool kids, baby mama's and daddies, all the people who accepted the GB OTA especially the one guy who keeps making accounts asking for root, people who helped me, people I helped, people who annoy me, people that love team win, people that despise team win, people that create pointless threads like this one, and anyone else I left out that made these evo forums awesome!!! See you on the other side.....
First impressions: Only having the phone 1 hour I can say right now that the camera button and 2d/3d switch is already driving me insane. I hold my phone with my left hand and my fingers rest on it. I HATE IT, I HATE IT so effin much lol. Other than that the phone is godlike.......

The camera button bothers you only because you aren't used to it. After you get used to it, if you use the camera, you're gonna love it.
I didn't know you ever had a kickstand to begin with....zing!
The fact that on the evo 3d the charging port/ hdmi port is one in same makes it a no go. At least with evo 4g you can stream Netflix, HBO go and other internet streaming sites while still charging the phone makes it a plus. That phone will be 99 bucks after Christmas.

Being a over the road trucker must truck stops have free high speed wifi. I have a 387 peterbuilt truck with a 32 inch flat screen mounted so streaming movies saves a ton on entertainment. They want 26.99 for a new release DVD... No way.... So for me the evo 4g is where I will be parked for a while and if I do upgrade I will still keep the phone for that purpose ... I think there will be much better phones offered in 2012.

Hell, they may have a root for the Evo 2.3.3 by then, too! lol

Same here. I cannot stand Sense. I actually played with an EVO 3D, and comparing it to my rooted, fully decked-out AOSP running phone, honestly it wasn't much faster either.
I'm sure it will be blazing once root is achieved and it has proper support, but my LauncherPro was certainly faster than Sense 3.0, apps loaded about the same speed, the browser pinch to zoom was almost exactly the same.
I'm sure for flash videos and graphics-heavy games it would certainly make a difference, but aside from that, a rooted EVO 4G easily matches the speed of a stock EVO 3D.
