if you delete or rename these rumor has it that if you do a factory reset to default it will brick ur phone ill will upload the files along with a update.zip tonight
I was also able to remove Acer Sync.
I removed nemopalyer.
Guys,
When you say removed, do you 'App deinstalled' or 'Apk file deleted' ?
Cheers,

First I backed up the entre /system/app folder on an sdcard.
Then I started removing apps using Titanium backup (uninstall option).
I too removed Acer Sync, among others.
you can also rename the file extension to bak. that way u can easily restore it if needed...just reset the tab when your done and it will not load on start up but remain in the folder.

so all .apk can be changed to .bak? like acersync.bak???
and what about the other one? .obex?
Guys, quick question - by default there are 123 files in /system/app, right (.apk and .odex), right? Just making sure I haven't misplaced a system app while tinkering!

I rename all apk's to bak instead of deleting them...that way if u need it later you just rename it instead of having to load them back on the device. I haven't renamed the odex files but I assume if you rename the file its associated with then it should be fine.

2 members report that bricks the acer and both of them has renamed the phone.apk.

I wouldn't remove them - you've got plenty of space and it doesn't bork you like "Link to xy"
I also removed NemoPlayer and Gallery 3D, they both have running services.

It's not about saving space in this case. It's about not having a process running all day looking for a 3G signal on a device with no 3G and wasting precious battery.

Do not removed or rename these two apks!!! If they are missing (or renamed in my case) and you do a software reset, your unit will be bricked. This happened to me and I've seen that it has happen to some others as well.

Can't we just rename them back before doing a reset?
Is there any other harm?
True, but you'd have to remember to do that.

This is why you don't go trigger happy with the delete functions of root file managers. At least make a back-up of what you're going to delete. If what the 2nd poster said, another music.apk probably won't work on your phone.
Best bet is just do a factory reset or download SEUS and reinstall the firmware.
(please backup whatever you need.. sms, whatever. if you lose these, not even SEUS can save you; use the backup and restore app that SE gave you. provided you didn't delete that as well.... )
I did it hahaha.
I'll copy the Music.apk and the odex file if anyone needs it.

By doing this wont we lose the ability to receive future OTA's or manually update without jumping through a thousand hoops? .... like when Paul's app modified the system folders to remove goggles?

It doesn't matter too much now. Just wait and we will get all kinds of custom ROMs and you can flash whatever you want. After OTAs come out, usually you can get a custom deodexed version within hours. At least that's how it was on my N1. I'm pretty sure there are more G2s in peoples hands now than N1s, hence more interest? Just guessing...

Back then, we didn't have S-OFF so putting the app back after it was deleted was impossible. Now we do have S-OFF so we're all good, as long as you backed-up the apps prior to removing them.
do i have to delete the the original .apk and .odex files from the system/app after moving the originals to the sdcard/backup? or do i just move it, and leave the original stuff in the system app. and reboot. and then install the CM apk's?
dam legit!

If you move them from one place to another, then they are only in the place where you moved the to, and are no longer in the place where you moved them from. Hence move not copy.

Yes, have cleared the Data. Then copy the new Mms.apk, change rights and crashed system service (no reboot required). But get Force Close.
Then Reboot, checked for app data (is cleared), but get Force Close.

can anyone help?
I can install other apps no problem. I'm trying to download vplayer from the play market, and it just wouldn't install. It says not sufficient storage, but I do have sufficient storage, and I can install other apps no problem.
I had vplayer previously, but uninstall it, is there anyplace I can clear the data? this is quite frustrating
You can try deleting the .odex file for that app under /data/app (I think you might need a root explorer)

if you are rooted, otherwise
open Terminal
Code:
su
cd /data
cd /app
ls
rm (packagename.odex)
ls will allow u to see the list of all the files in that folder and help u type the exact name with ease.
Just download lucky patcher it will automatically remove unused odex files

Worked for me too..
I'm with T-Mobile if that helps or changes anything, running 4.2.2. Now, I've gotten my phone to stop bugging me to install the OTA update. But the problem is the OTA update is still downloading in the background, it's just that I'm not being bugged by my phone to update it (i.e. there's no icon showing up in the notification bar). It becomes a sort of "silent update." So why is this a problem for me?
Because I'm on T-Mobile's cheapest plan which is the 500mb data plan. Each time the OTA downloads it eats up 155mb. And twice already this billing cycle it's done it, so that's 310mb of data wasted.
There are posts saying to use Titanium Backup Pro and freezing an app called Software Update MUC, and another post referring to the file as Software Update 2.3.0.5, but on my phone (using TB Pro) there's no file starting with "Software" anything.
So how do I stop my phone from downloading the OTA all together? Please help. Thanks.
Just install the update, that will make it stop for good
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk
Sorry, forgot to mention doing that won't work. For some reason my phone doesn't properly install OTA updates. I don't mind being stuck on 4.2.2. I just want the OTA downloads to stop in the first place.
Give this a try...
If rooted, use a file manager like Root Explorer, go to System/Etc/Security, (mount R/W) and rename otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak
Reboot phone.

I've done that already. I renamed the file to otacerts.zip.back (instead of .bak). I assume that doesn't make any difference. I believe renaming the file is what is causing my phone to not show the OTA icon in the notification bar. But as I said, the issue for me is that my phone is still downloading the update itself.
Any other ideas?

On my phone, the file listed that comes before where lgfota.apk/odex should appear is LGEIME_THEME_BLACK.odex, and the file after that file is LGGallery.apk.

I don't have a system/priv-app folder, either. I'm on stock rom, but I removed as much bloat as I can, including certain apps I find no use for (e.g. double-tap, voice command, etc). Maybe this will help: I used Root Explorer's search feature and searched for "fota", and here's what I think are the most "relevant" results:
/lgdms.fota.rc
/lgdms.fota_update.rc
/etc/fota
/etc/permissions/com.lge.fota.xml
/system/framework/com.lge.fota.jar
/system/framework/com.lge.fota.odex
Does this help? Anyone?
