It worked for me. Do you have an external SD card in the phone? Are you still connected to the PC in mass storage mode with debugging enabled?

I flashed Gingerbreak with USB Debugging and None.
Gingerbreak should be on your internal SD, so no need for external SD to be in there.
you are suppose to have a an external sdcard in there while you do this.
From what I have experienced, you MUST have an external SD card inserted or it will not work. Also, it has wiped my internal SD every time I've ran it.
Gingerbreak worked for me on 1.8.3. However, you MUST install Gladenable to enable sideloading.
I didnt have to use gladenable. I had gingerbreak waiting on my ext SD card when I started the whole process:
RSD to 1.26 -> gladroot (+enable sideloading option)-> OTA 1.57 -> after update gladroot -> RSD 1.83 -> gingerbreak
I didn't even have my phone connected to my PC via USB. but I did have debugging enabled. installed gingerbreak from external card

After I installed Gingerbreak, I didn't have the option to install non-market apps, so that is why I had to go the Gladenable route.

this is interesting ...
last time i did gingerbreak on my friends phone i just load it right on the internal SD card ...
and gingerbreak didnt format / delete anything either ...
he was on 1.5.7
i was confused for a sec but i m like ... it works so whatever ...
Yeah I had no problem with the internal SD being formatted. Strange. I have heard that it requires you to have the external SD.

yes it does. back up your internal SD, every time I rooted w gingerbreak it wiped out my internal SD memory.
Doesn't make sense that for some it wipes out internal SD and others it doesn't. Either way, it works on 1.8.3.

gingerbreak utilizes an overflow exploit, so the varying behavior is to be expected.

I'm currently on 1.57 Gingerblur. Why did you root twice? Could we just flash 1.83 via RSD then run gingerbreak to root then gladenable to allow side loading? Just trying to make it simple as possible.

I did this because I wasn't sure if I could just flash 1.83 via RSD and successfully run gingerbreak without any other actions, since gingerbreak is an apk, and sideloading may be necessary to install such apk's. I couldn't find any definitive information in these threads about what works and doesn't work. Seems like some methods work for some while some don't. I was just covering all the bases. I'm no expert and I doubt if the course I took is optimal. All I do know... is that it worked... and that is what matters to me.
and yes I can see the contradiction in logic with the way I did things. but like I said.. it worked and that's what matters.

Same here. I guess if you use another sideloading method earlier in the update process you might not need it. I do a total wipe then flash 1.8.3, then GingerBreak, the GladEnable. Works great.

So I had stock firmware running rooted and using chainfires lag fix(ext3).
Today I tried to do the free sim unlock and it seemed to work fine.
Upon next reboot I kept on getting FC on all my apps, including launcher pro. Now I am getting a message saying that my memory is full and all the good stuff. I might have screwed something up when I was getting the blm3 file but my question is what is my best way to proceed, should I try to just revert back using chainfires exe or should I just use Odin and reflash the firmware.
If I reflash the firmware using Odin, how can I clean the internal sd card so I do not have remain of crap on it from the lagfix?
Thanks.
you could always get ROM Manager, and try a "fix permissions" it may help.....
can't install anything from market, freezes at starting download, also all my apps the built in ones show as 0 bytes space
I will most likely reinstall, too bad because everything was perfect before it all broke.

yes, both internal and external sd cards are mounted, I can see them in the "files" application and in terminal emulator

wtf lol, i probably should have been more specific haha but yeah idk...
could you push the rom manager apk with adb? or you could try applying the lagfix again. I think your best options would be to either nandroid back, or better yet ODIN back, then unlock(you have the key), then root, then install all the goodies.
Maybe try reverting the lag fix? Is there an undo script for the particular lag fix method you used?

undid the lagfix and market was broken still, I ended up doing an Odin restore on my gf's pc (32 bit windows) x64 was getting stuck.
All in all not bad, and me being stupid, I am applying the lagfix again on the fresh install. Once I know how to do it, it's a cakewalk.
Thanks Peeps.
i used gingerbreak to root 1.8.3 and now when im in the market it says my only apps installed are maps and youtube.
anyone else get this?
all the apps still work. only market doesnt recognize that they are installed
Sometimes Gingerbreak formats your entire internal SD card. I've never had it happen myself though. And I've rooted about 4 different times with gingerbreak.
it did format my sd. i backed everything up though and put it all back on the sd card
Yeah i had a very short list of apps that were there... and it did format my internal sd card the first time I ran it.... so maybe that's what the deal was. I flashed the 1.83 sbf today and ran gingerbreak again and it didn't format the card.
Not sure what a fix would be, but it would be nice to get updates for those apps eventually.
settings, applications, manage applications, all tab, market, clear data
should solve it

I tried that and it didn't seem to help.. I was hoping it would re-enumerate the applications. Not sure If I've rebooted since then though... let me try that.
UPDATE: Clearing data and rebooting worked.

Why don't you like Gingerbreak? That's what I used and had no problem with it.
If it is because of the possibility of wiping your internal SD, just back everything up just in case. It only wiped a couple items off mine.

Can't you just move the apps that are on your SD to your phone until you root with Gingerbreak?
Then you can just connect to your PC and backup your internal SD? Or just backup you whole internal SD on you computer and restore after?

I'm confused. Just copy and paste your whole Internal SD contents to a folder on your PC. Then if anything gets deleted, copy it all back.
Define "easy." I think that
1: 1.2.6 sbf
2: Gladroot 4.2
3: Update and run afterupdate
Is extremely easy. And it leaves your internal intact if you're worried about that. (Doesn't your hard drive have a couple spare gigs for short-term backup?)

Don't even think you need to restore it to 1.2.6. I was rooted on 1.26, updated to 1.57 and lost root, then updated to 1.83 and used GingerBreak to root and it worked fine.
Akira: the only thing that GingerBreak will possibly erase are some/all of the files for the apps you have installed. All that information is visible if you have your phone connected to your computer as a mass storage device. Just copy everything on your phone to your computer (i usually just make a separate folder on my desktop), let GingerBreak do it's thing, and once everything is up and running again... if you're missing some of your apps, just copy the stuff you copied to your computer back to your phone.

Exactly what I was stating, and it works quite well. Very easy.
You still need a sd card since gingerbreak uses the sd card for temporary files.

DO NOT USE GINGERBREAK! you can just use afterupdate.bat if that is how you rooted before. I can confirm this works.
i completely understand why you wouldn't want to use gingerbreak. copying off the entire internal SD card is a huge pain in the ass.
so if i used aroot i can do afterupdate again?

Yes, as long as you haven't done any mods. If you did mod you will have to SBF, GladRoot, update, retain root.

I just picked up a Xoom last week and have been messing with it since and ran into a problem.
I have put in two different SD cards into the top slot and none of them are showing up when browsing with File Manager HD. When I go into Settings->Storage, under SD card it is greyed out and says insert an SD card for mounting.
I don't mind wiping the card, but how do I get the Xoom to recognize the card?
Have u formated it to fat 32?

I just took it out of my phone and tried to stick it in.
The card works fine on my phone and on my Gtab.
I haven't rooted it either.
Ok, so now under SD Card it lets me select Mount SD Card, but nothing happens. Why is it so hard to use this feature?

wow, this sucks monkey balls.
my gtablet running an HC ROM, which doesn't even support HC, can have access to the SD card fine and is changeable between my phone/camera/pc, but for it to work with the XOOM has to be formatted to FAT32. Also, I can't write to it unless I root.
what's the point of the SD card then?
Mine worked straight from a card I had in a LG EnV Touch. I don't know what the deal is. Has your XOOM just come back from the upgrade or is it the WiFi version?

Without root, you can access music, video, pdfs other files from your micro sdcard...up to 32GB, which adds lots of storage. There is no apps-to-sd in Honeycomb, but if you root, you can have R/W access to the micro sdcard and save your nandroids to it, TB backups, write files to it, etc. When you root, you'll find the micro sdcard at mnt/external1, on same directory level as sdcard (32GB internal storage) and mnt/usbOTG. Xoom uses micro sdcard for media storage/playback in non-rooted state and that's fine. But if you root you have a hell of a lot more features. that's our reward for the work (pain) of rooting.

This is the best way I know: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
It can seem pretty daunting but we all did it, some have done it multiple times, and so can you.
In the first section where it talks about setting up adb on your pc, there's a link to an alternate approach to setting up the files. It's supposed to give you just the files needed for rooting and nothing more. I never tried it but you could if you want to...may save a step or two.
Anyway, this guide should have everything you need.
Take your time, print out the instructions and read them carefully. The Xoom was made to be rooted, it's just a complex device, so there's no 'one click' magic.
hello everyone!
i am using a sgs gt-i9000 with 2.3.3
i want to root my device with gingerbreak v1.2
i read the instructions, but i still have some questions.
1. does the phone have to be connected to PC when i click the 'ROOT' button?
2. is an external sd-card necessary while rooting? (i generally don't use external sd card)
3. after rooting, all my internal memory apps and data will be deleted right?
i mean will only the apps be deleted or all my images and everything also?
Please help me! I want to get my phone rooted asap!
Thank you very much!
1) Use the CF-Root method to root your phone. PC connection is not needed as you will flash it in the recovery mode.
2) Nope, an external sd card is not needed as well.
3) Rooting your phone will not wipe any applications or data.

Hi, search here for CF-ROOT from ChainFire XXJVQ 2.3.3 if you are using it or enter in About Phone and search for your Firmware CF-ROOT, put phone in download mode and flash as PDA
