Doing a Froyo update - Galaxy 3 General

Ok, I know this going to get instantly downvoted into oblivion for my incompetence, but can anyone give an idea of what is involved in upgrading my i5800 to froyo?
Samsung UK are being as useful as chocolate teapots with regards to the official update, so I'd like to get some froyo-ey goodness into my handset
Basically, I have a few questions:
What is the best way to backup? Can I create a complete image, so I can restore completely to as it is now if i need to?
Which firmware is best to use? I quite fancy rooting, so I'd like to get a firmware that offers some protection, or an app that can provide a similar thing.
And what software do I need to perform this?
Sorry if this seems a bit "Hurr Durr, red teh other pages plox"...
Cheers
Michael.

1. You can use Titanium Backup for backing up currently installed app.s & data. You will need to root the phone to use this..assuming you're on eclair right now, use the z4root app. to root easily. Additionally, you can also backup data like contacts, sms etc. in Kies.
2. You don't really need to backup & restore entire system image..just note details your current ROM & download it from samfirmware.com in case you need to flash it back. For flashing you will need Odin software.
3. Download any recent European Froyo ROM from samfirmware & flash it with Odin. Use SuperOneClick to root once Froyo is installed.
You will find all the info that you need in the rooting & flashing consolidated thread in dev. forum. Wish you all the best.

Very new and complete noob

Hi all.
I have a Samsung Vibrant that's still on 2.1. I want to get into rooting and running custom ROMs, but my first attempt failed miserably. I had only rooted the phone and played with a little bit of overclocking for a couple of days when I received an OTA update announcement. Not thinking about it, I accepted it. After that, I got stuck on the "Vibrant" startup screen during the reboot. I took the phone and flashed it back to stock using the method most use (ODIN?). Anyway, even back to stock it would get stuck in a loop of running the media scanner during startup...needless to say I had to get a new phone.
My point is that I want to get my phone more personalized but I'm a bit stand-off-ish because of my prior experience. There is a ton of terminology I'm not familiar with at all...the most I can do with a computer is turn it on and use it.
Is there a place I can go that's an entry level course in rooting and the terminology associated with it? Thanks.
Check my signature. Noob guide. If something is not answered please pm me so I can add it.
I would not use kies to get 2.2.
What is "kies?" Also, I've been reading through (obviously there's a lot of reading to do) but I have another question that relates to my previous experimentation with rooting:
Is there ANY way to do a full back up of my phone now so that if I ever have to go back to stock using ODIN I can go back to how my phone is now? The last time I tried I could not find the same software I had before and a few things had been changed...basically like it wasn't a true stock file.
OK, so you are nooBie
Here are a list of things you are going need if you want to update your phone to 2.2
1. If you do not know what you are doing (which is the case) then, read
member-s15274n Noobie guide in the Bible. This will get you up to speed on the knowledge necessary to modify the phone.
2. If you decide to do the factory (from tmobile/samsung) update, then read on that process. I personally do not recommend updating that way.
3. If you update via some of the excellent roms in the Dev section (which I recommend) then read up on them Master's Axura, Jellette's Einherjar rom and Team Whiskey's Roms are all excellent and there are others YOU NEED TO READ UP ON THESE,
4. If you go with a custom rom Then you need The following programs/patches:
A. Odin 1.7 (this installs on the computer)
B. Oneclick root. (Go to unlockr.com) they have a video easy to follow and have the links for this.
C. Clockwork (Rom Manager) free installs on the phone
D. Titanium Backup (installs o nthe phone)
E. Original 959JFD 2.1 stock ROM (in case you f#ck-up) you can odin back
F. The Custom rom of your choice.
That is all you need, read up and once you get going you will maybe have questions..... Ask in the Q & A we all here welcome a new person to the forum and help them.

Samsung Kies is an official program that syncs your phone to your PC. This includes downloading and installing official OS updates to your phone.
A NANDroid backup can backup everything except the kernel. When you restore this backup your phone will go back to the state it was in when you backed it up.
Remember to always read a lot before doing anything.
I'm kinda new too. I personally chose Team Whiskey's ROMs. Their guide and s15274n's Noob Guide helped me a lot. Have fun!
Thanks for the information.
Ok, now I really feel like a noob....I am to the phone rooting idea, but not to forums...but I cannot for the life of me find the Developers section...

[Q] Backup Options For Tab

Hi Everyone. I am brand new to Android and want to get started modding but want to have a good fallback plan in case something goes wrong.
I have been looking at some of the backup options and with all my searching I am having trouble finding out exactly what each of them do. The most popular seem to be Titanium Backup, Roto-Backup, and ClockworkMod. Are those correct?
From what I have gathered so far Titanium backup looks like it seem to get all your apps and settings and looks like its firmware independent. (You can backup from stock and reapply on a flashed ROM and it will keep your firmware the same and just reapply your settings and apps over top)
What I cant find is much detailed information on Roto-Backup and ClockworkMod Backup. Would someone be able to explain what the differences are and what I should be using.
What I want to be able to do if possible is basically take an "Image" of my device as it is now (Stock Rogers Tab JJ6), flash it to try Roto's new ROM, and be able to flash back to my existing stock Rogers setup if needed. What I am actually afraid of is that say official gingerbread or honeycomb comes out and if we are using something like Roto-JMG, that we will not be able to upgrade to it.
So basically I guess what im asking is, is there a way to create a custom ROM of my current Tab so that I can always get back to my stock carrier Firmware?
Thank you guys, and I apologize if I have missed a previous thread that already has answered this.
Use Roto-Backup, it does pretty much the same as nandroid but in a much more easily recovered from way. (CWM relies on a custom kernel, Roto-Backup doesn't)

I have spent two hours on this site and I am clueless, please help me!! (srs)

First Get your selft updated to 2.2 or 2.2.1 if available.
1) then look for CF-Root in xda ...that will help you...
2) If not then install OCLF from Market and root it.
3) Use SuperOneClick ... Be sure to read manual first.
To elaborate a little on the last post....first try to update to 2.2 or 2.2.1 through your local service provider or by using Kies (available from Samsung, their official firmware updating tool). However Kies does not work in all regions and is very finicky, and you should research it here before you try to use it.
As for rooting, I rooted 2.2 directly using SuperOneClick but I believe it can be used for 2.1 as well. You can learn about it and downloaded here at XDA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682). It is very simple and easy to use but be sure you read the entire thread about it and even watch the video included. Remember forewarned is forearmed.
If you then wish to install a lagfix without changing any other element of your software, then you can use OCLF from the Android Market. Look for it here on XDA and as always, read up on it before you use it. Some people feel that the Ext2 lagfix method OCLF uses is unsafe, but just as many people swear by it, so read up on it, and make your own choice. Lagfixes will often improve your user experience dramatically, especially on on stock firmwear.
Next, you may wish to flash a new kernel. Even more then swapping mods, kernels can bring some very impressive changes to your phone and is also essential if you wish to use Clockwork Mod for backing up and flashing your firmware. The best guide I have found for doing this the first time is put out by Hardcore, and his SpeedMod kernel is a great choice for new users. Find out all about it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756 and be sure to follow his instructions EXACTLY for best results.
If you decide you want to flash an entire new Mod, there I can't help you (haven't had the nerve to do it yet, but likely will once final Gingerbread mods are released), but there is plenty of great advice around here on that topic, seek and ye shall find.
Good luck
If you want to download paid apps for free you don't need root, you just need to find a place to download the apps from. Discussion of warez is not permitted on XDA though, so you better find yourself another place.

OP doesn't actually mention paid apps, they used the term "free apps"
We have a thread for aussies here mate, so come on in and ask friends ;-)
Bring flame proof budgies though LOL

The majority of Android apps are free and on the market and downloadable on older versions of Android .

@threadstarter read the sticky ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 ) we mostly don't flash with kies we use heimdall or odin .
2.1 is a pos against the new very good 2.2.1 roms
Before flashing read more and test your 3btn combo
yea my 3-button-combo works
ok i used the superoneclick and have succesfuly rooted my phone thx guys
now wat do i do

You can for example install titanium backup and make a backup of your apps and backup your efs folder never know when you need it
Next i would suggest you reed about flashing and if you are comfortable with everything install a custom rom like darky's (beginner friendly) be aware of the risks and have fun with a much better phone
But I think my phone is still Android 2.1 as it says under Firmware version; 2.1-update1 this I obtained from the Settings->About phone.
do i need to update or something cos i still can't update via kies
2. Flashing stock firmwares.
--Why, when, where: You should usually do this if your phone doesn't work with your current firmware, if there is a new firmware out that might work better or if you just want to go to a stock firmware.
--Prerequisites: Odin, a stock firmware (from www.samfirmware.com for example).
NOTE: Apparently there are people that report that using Odin v1.3 might interrupt the flashing and leave you with a soft brick and that v1.7 doesn't have this problem. I have always used v1.3 and never had problems because of it, but if v1.3 isn't working for you, you might give v1.7 (or even heimdall) a try before giving up.
The steps to flashing a stock firmware are already described in a couple of other threads, like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
Nonetheless, here a quick sum-up of what you have to do:
2.1. Open up Odin.
2.2. Put your phone in the "Download mode" with the 3-button-combo (Volume Down + Home + Power).
2.3. Connect your phone to your computer (DO NOT CONNECT THE PHONE BEFORE OPENING ODIN OR THIS WILL NOT WORK).
2.4. Odin should recognize your phone and one of the "com" boxes should light up yellow. If this isn't the case, try repeating the previous steps and eventually connect your phone to another USB port.
2.5. Select your firmware in Odin.
2.5.1. --OPTIONAL-- If you want your phone to be like new, you can select "Re-Partition" in Odin, which will make it repartition your Internal SD. In this case you also have to use a .pit file (WARNING -- you will lose all of your installed applications and settings).
2.6. Take a deep breath and click the "Start" button.
2.7. Wait for the firmware to be flashed and for the device to be restarted.
2.8. You now have a stock firmware. If you also selected "Re-Partition" in Odin, all your programs and settings will be gone and your device will be like new.

Has anyone done a stock Vodafone update from android 2.1?

Had to send my phone back to get serviced and am now rocking a k800i!
Grabbed my g/fs phone to surf and watch iplayer.
SHE'S STILL ON 2.1!!!!
Isn't that eclair?
I asked if she wanted the update done and she's worried about losing app data and all that. I can't find out if the standard vodafone update will nuke her phone when it updates.
Does anyone here know? (better answers from here than actual voda forums I'm guessing)
Hi,
In most case, a firmware update make you lose data (App installed, SMS...)
You just keep what's in the SDCARD (Pics, mp3...)
I think there is just the minor upgrade let your data on the phone...
So if you upgrade from 2.1 to 2.3 you gonna loose your data...
- So before updating i suggest you to backup your SMS, CONTACTS with a software (You have Backup&Restore i think). You also can save your app with configuration with an app like titanium backup
- I also suggest you to root your device to make a full backup of your data...
- And if you are courageous (lol) i suggest you to unlock your bootloader, install a new Kernel (Like that your phone will be faster and you will have Recovery). With recovery you can backup all your rom (Like a windows restoration)
- After that you can choose to stay in the stock rom or to install a custom rom (More customizable, faster...)
If you want to unlock, root, flash use Flashtool .. there is a guide in my signature...
If you want to install a new Kernel search one on the site and refer to his thread
If you want to install a custom, do the same...
I hope it helps...

[Q] SafeStrap, Rom & Titanium Backup Related Questions

Howdy all - been doing a lot of reading about rooting & custom ROM's and am looking for a little bit of clarification.
My Note 3 had MI9 when I got it and I took the OTA to make it MJ7.
I have root working well & paid version of Titanium Backup installed.
I have Safe Strap 3.65 installed as well.
1. For Titanium Backup - I've done app/system backup. I would use that backup if I froze or uninstalled an app and experienced a problem and needed to unfreeze or reinstall a particular app - correct?
2. For Safe Strap - if I install a custom ROM - I am starting over on my phone from scratch, correct? I would need to setup EVERYTHING - accounts, apps, music, ringtones, calendars, wallpapers, the whole nine yards, right? I can't utilize my Titanium backup to restore any of those settings or apps, can I? I'm just trying to figure out the quickest method to get the phone "re-setup" to my liking after a custom rom or reset.
3. Last question - if I wanted to put my phone back to un-rooted and without Safe Strap - say to turn it back into Verizon at some point - would I just need to use the regular download mode (I believe that's also referred to as Odin - or is Odin something else?) and install a stock MJ7 tar to get it back to that state?
Also, I saw a post that had MJ7 tar & modem - I don't need both, right? The tar would include the modem. The modem is available separate if I wanted to install just that modem, on say, MI9 or something.
I think that's all I need. Just want to make sure I'm prepared for whatever I do in the near future. With Titanium Backup - I've got a pretty nicely running de-bloated phone - so don't know that I "need" a custom ROM - but I like to tinker - so I will probably experiment a little depending on what all the available custom roms have in them.
Thanks for helping me clear these things up!
