Hi i bought a dell streak from someone on CL and didnt notice that this phone is a engineering sample and i've had nothing but problems with it crashed and hangs on the Dell logo till i pull the battery for atleast 3 hours or sometimes i can plug it into a computer with the USB cable and it will boot into 2.2 i've flashed a number of roms but still experience the same issue.
So what's the deal with the engineering sample ? did i buy a POS anyway to save this so it works. Its really random when it breaks i used it last week for 3days no problems but now im stuck again on the dell logo which really sucks since i was at work and can't use this phone at all till it decides to start working again.
What can i do ? I'm assuming i can't return it to dell. Any help would be appriciated.
Go to dells web site it will tell you if the warnaty still good.

I tried but it can't find the service tag on there site.
engineering samples don't carry warranty so no point on calling.
If you are the adventurous type open it up and change the internal SD and see how it goes from there. Can't think of anything else that could be failing.
So is there a certain firmware that i can flash to possibly get it working again if it isnt a hardware problem?
Most possibly caused by a dead internal sd card, open it up and replace it is recommended.

looks like it is the internal SD card that's the problem when i go into the engineer menu it FAILS with a error of cmd/data test: fail so is there any workarounds ? im assuming not if i have to replace the SD slot how do i go about doing that ? any instructions anywhere ?
I saw someone cut out the plastic next to the battery so they would not have to take the phone apart. If I find it I will post it for you. Think it was over at modaco.com

Quick update I just took apart the phone and swapped out the internal card with another 2gb micro i had lying around and was able to factory reset and now the phone is working once again. Lets see if it last's heh anyways thanks for the info
I used http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell-Streak-Teardown/3512/1
shows you how to take the phone apart actually it was fairly easy compared to other phones i've taken apart.
glad it worked!!
Good to hear! And thanks for that valuable information.

I bought a focus on craigslist which I am assuming was the store demo because after a minute the demo comes up. Is there a way to get rid of this?
craigslist+demo mode= 99.9% chance of being stolen...
Sounds like you need to flash it with a genaric ROM. Check out the HTC HD7 forum and look under development. Seems a "Football" guy has cooked up a ROM for HD7. It worked great when I flashed my HD 7. Ask real nice and maybe he'll cook up a ROM for you to flash your Focus. What ever you do make sure it's the correct ROM for the phone as it may cause damage if it's for a different phone.
Either that or try to get your money back from the Criagslist seller.
shoot me the imei and ill check which att it was stolen from. Seriously though, thats the demo loop we load up to the devices. it supposed to also wipe the phone out nightly, not let you load a live ID and will not go away even with a hard reset. sorry dude, return the phone to seller and report to police.
I got one of these puppies on Ebay - same thing - stolen unit with the demo ROM. The battery was even dead from constant playing and hmm... the back cover was mysteriously missing." I want to report the guy on Ebay but I want my money back first.
ya me to,
I had something and am stuck now with a demo phone. Who else got one in Vancouver pm me and lets compare who we got from. Its hard to get cash back from craigslist people, the police don't really care so i wouldnt waste my time with them. But a good old lynching goes a long way. Back to flashing from what i understand you might be able to flashthe omnia 7 Rom just don't flash the radio. Focus and omnia 7 are identical phones and the Rom are these except the radios differ. I might try and see what happens. Not much to lose or wait till an update comes out.

Yes my battery cover was missing too. Even had screen burn in at the top that says windows phone
Sorry the device alive is not intended to be removed from the device. I installed them on our windows phones in the store and am pretty sure it stores the demo rom on a place that it can not be removed from. If you do find a way to add a new rom make sure you delete any folder that ends with windows7_samsungfocus.devicealive... Or something like that.

how did you flash the demo rom onto the device, what program you guys use for that, Also what program can we use to look at what files are stored on the phone.

Trust me... you do not want the demo phone ROM flashed on your phone. FYI the guy who commented on having it loaded works at a store that sells WP7 device and has flashed the ROM for demo purposes.
The file is from a zip file that at&t marketing distributes through our internal website.

Is it a rom or just files that are installed on the phones ram partition. If its just files that are installed somewhere then they would be able to be removed, full rom would mean it would require a flashed rom, I read on the omnia7 forum that people there have had recived phones with demo mode on and simply reflashed a new rom and that was all that was required to remove demo mode. the issue with the focus is there is no roms around to flash or the program to flash the phone, im sure the omnia7 flash tool would work on the focus.

I have the same issue with an LG Quantum, so I sent it to LG to have the stock rom put on the phone. I'm pissed that i don't have my quantum for 2 1/2 weeks, but, no demos and fully functional when I get it back!

I bought my focus on ebay but it was stuck in demo mode so I figured to boot the omnia 7 rom as I could not find anywhere a focus rom and I have no idea how to cook one! Unfortunately the phone now does not function properly, its accelerometer sensor is messed and soft buttons are not working.. does anyone know where I can find the focus rom to boot it back? pleasw I am kinda desperate here!
Thanks!

Have you tried playing with registry at all, or anything in diagnosis, from what I hear we will see the update for wp7 on the 31st on jan. I have searched high and dry for the focus rom but there is none around, when the update comes out im sure you will see the rom here shortly after. Does everything else work ok though,
What you mean by playing with registry? I am kind of new to these stuff, sry! so my only hope now is waiting for the wp7 update? and then what I have to do (if for example comes tomorrow!)?
We shall see after 7th feb..
I delete at&t DA on my phone but demo still come up.
Did any of yall bother to check out the phone before you gave the cash to the craigslist seller? Every time ive sold an electronic they play w/ it for at least 10 mins.
Seems like this guy on eBay is selling stolen phones too.....check out his feedback lol

Hi,
I'm really hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.
I've had my Desire HD for about eight months now, and counting the one I lost about 10 minutes ago, I've gone through a total of ten memory cards.
Each time I get a message saying it's been unexpectedly removed, or that it is blank or damaged. I've tried Sandisk and Samsung cards, all Class 2 / 8GB.
I hardly ever remove the memory card, but when I do I am always careful to unmount it. The same as when I connect it to my PC via USB.
After the 8th memory card died, the Gingerbread update had just been released, and I was hoping it was due to a software issue. However, as expected, my 9th memory card died shortly after. I contacted HTC who sent me ONE replacement SD card, to which I explained that I wanted my phone repaired. Courier picked it up, they said that it was being caused by a software issue and simply done a reset.
I knew it wouldn't work, and low and behold my 10th memory card has just died.
I am now contemplating going to Phones4U and asking for a replacement, as someone else has mentioned in the forum. However, there was one thing I wanted to check with people first.....
I connect my phone to my car stereo via Bluetooth, which I use as a handsfree and to listen to music that is stored on my phone. Now, normally I just turn my car stereo off. How likely is it that this could be causing the card failure? I don't see how, as the memory card isn't physically being removed, but I wanted to get people's thoughts on this before I start pushing Phones4U for a replacement!
I don't think your cards are physically damaged. They just need to be formatted.

I don't think it's my cards that are physically damaged, but it must be a hardware issue with the phone. Each of the memory cards either say it's been removed, or that it's blank or damaged. Some of them I can put into my PC and repair. Some of them worked again after I had formatted them, however 5 out of the 10 would not even be picked up by my PC.
I have now emailed Phones4U, so I shall see where I get (if anywhere) with them.
What HTC firmware are you using? There was an issue with 1.72 that caused symptoms such as yours. That is one of the issues that got the OTA pulled.
I have the phone number for Phones4U's written complaints team, the team that you always get told don't accept incoming calls. Should you need it, just let me know.
Sounds a very similar problem to mine mate........

Hi there s32bauer,
I think i may have seen the same problem, although i have only tried 2 /sdcards and they BOTH work on the PC or lappy afterwards.
See this thread for more on my issue,
Hope you have a little more luck than myself.
I have had some great help off some great people on here at XDA though......Thanks guys...
P.S. Have you been running any custom ROM's? If so, what were they?
i had the same problem when on 1.72, i went through 3 16sdhc cards. i fixed this by rooting and using leedroids gingerbread.
all three cards which were broke i managed to fix and they are now in good use in my wifes wildfire and our galaxy tabs, the 32gb card i now have in my phone has been in there for about 4 months now with no more unexpected removals.
The only other time i had this problem was with my motorola milestone, it also ate cards - but the phone was next to useless as it was sig locked and never updated (got a full refund as flash never arrived in the 9 months i owned the pos).
Gone through 10 memory cards that's absolutely insane!! Even more insane that a OTA can be released that causes it.
I think your owed some replacements if the cards are screwed.

The same has happened to me... I broke around 5 SDcards like that. Problem solved by rooting the phone and Gingerbread !

I've been through quite a lot. The first two died on 1.32 I believe. Then I lost SIX on the 1.72 firmware. Another one once I'd upgraded to Android 2.3, and then the final one the other once I'd received it back from HTC.
The number for Phones4U would be brilliant, thanks!

Hey, thanks for the link. I'll have a look through, although I'm going to continue to push for a brand new replacement I think.
Tried 1.32, then to 1.72, and then Android 2.3. One of them was a custom ROM, but had one die on that one too unfortunately, so I'm quite sure it's just my phone being a dud! lol

Just been looking at the SanDisk warranty on faulty non working micro SD cards - you should be able to get replacements as long as you have proof of purchase.
Maybe spread them out over a few weeks each if you have a few

Any pointers on which type of card yours is? I think it needs to be a sdhc card but dont know what class number it should be. I seem to see that they have different classes.
Or which seller you purchased from??
I was trying update to GB.... and by accident nudge the usb cable off! Now its Hard bricked! It has no response at all (cant power on, no display, nilch!!)! Any ideas how to rescue it?
the future is bright, the future is Galaxy.
use the search and look for : how to recover hard bricked devices, I am pretty sure there is something you can do, and if everything fails get it to Samsung repair service and ask for help.
good luck my friend, the only advice I would give to the people who own such devices is DO NOT FLASH YOU TABLET FOR NOTHING! IT IS A USFUL TOOL TO READ AND MAKE PHONE CALLS NOT FOR BETA TESTING ALMOST ANY AVAILABLE ROM OVER THE NET.

Nothing! as long your device is still in warranty they won't charge you for it, they can check from your serial no. or if you still have the receipt. Go on samsung site and lookup your nearest service centre.
"in the brightest day in the blackest night, no Apple shall escape Android's might"
I've used this service before. Cost was total was $50 plus 1 way shipping to them. They paid the return shipping. I got it back within a a few days of them receiving it. Make sure to get unbrickable mod applied to it. Then you will never have to worry about bricking your tab again. Unbrickable mod is a hardware modification that makes your tab into a developer version of the tab. It kinda puts your tab into a a different download mode when you plug it into a usb port that lets your flash a new bootloader over usb if you accidentally delete yours.
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-unbrickable-mod-repair/
And Rpatton I am sorry I didn't see your PM. I haven't been actually signed into xda very often until recently. I really recommend this service if you still have a tab in good condition. I was in the same boat you are in now for almost a year until I finally got off my ass a looked into getting it fixed. Although I haven't had to actually try using this mod, I know that it does work and there are tutorials out there about how to recover once you have this mod applied.
used them they are great a little hiccup with them but they fixed it got my tab back been using it like new since . Great service i would recommend it to anyone.
Well got my streak last week of fleabay, jeez great if you dont use it, but 10 minutes of use and it goes into the endless boot sequence until battery taken out and wait 20 minutes. Can be left on standby until battery drains with no problem.
I know this seems to be a common-ish problem, but what is the cause and a solution? Had a look around and done the factory reset stuff gone into flashboot to check internal sd all showing no problems. Its as if it gets above a certain temperature then resets itself. Is it related to the battery?
Contacted seller who states it was fine for him, hes admitted selling it and getting it back once! Lodged a complaint for a refund, but to be honest If I can get it sorted I would like to keep it. Love the size of the screen.
Does replacing the internal SD card and/or putting DSC on help at all? or is it f*cked?
Help appreciated
Send it back and find another that works. If it has problems now it's likely to have more soon and the seller doesn't seem to have been honest about it.
Put it into dispute, but wanted to know if there is a solution and what causes it. If there is a solution was thinking of asking for a partial refund to cover time to fix etc. The fone looks like new so if it can be fixed would prefer it.
Thanks for reply though
first thing i would suggest is starting out from sccratcch. stock Froyo ROM, recommend 360 as it was one of the latest. Use it for some time and see if its stable

110 US dollars? you can pick up a working one for about that or just a little more.
I wouldn't touch it, that's for sure. Without an sd card there's not a lot you can do, a new mainboard would cost about $110, and although im sure there are plenmty of skilled electronics engineers that can swap out teh sd card slot, its probably pretty tricky, and we all know how easy it is to accidentally destroy something else when opening them up. There are LOADS of threads that start 'i opened the case to fix X and ended up ripping the volume cable/button cables/gps antenna/and now wifi dopesnt work/touch screen has stopped responding', , even several cases where a repair shop hands teh unit back to teh customer worse than when they took it in to teh shop.
aww so its better to leave .. and my search continues...
TFYI.
