[REQUEST] More than just a continuous client - Android Software Development

I have an idea that I'm fairly sure hasn't been implemented in such a large scale as this suggestion. A continuous client is something that supposedly connects a client, an instant messaging program for instance, between all platforms (PC,android, etc.) so you can do something on one, and pick up right where you were on the other.
So here's what I'm envisioning:
An app that when installed on one phone, backs up all that it has about it (Text messages, contacts, call logs, a list of apps with saved data related to them, background, settings configuration, remembered wifi points, etc.) and allows for the restore of all of these things on a different phone or ROM.
This idea came from my incessant need to switch between roms, and the time consumption that comes with the manual restoration of apps, contacts (Sometimes I forget to sync them to Google...) and everything.
More so, I thought this would be a good thing to actually directly build in to modified roms if possible. I'm talking anywhere from building the app in to the rom, such as rom manager in cyanogenmod, or as deeply ingrained as cyanogenmod settings or the "welcome tutorial" at the beginning of many AOSP roms. Basically, you load a rom, boot up, go through said tutorial that is on many roms, and then a window comes up asking if you'd like to sync with your account in *Whatever this app would be called*.
I don't know if something similar has been implemented before, and I'm aware that something like this, if done as I described, would require dedicated server(s) and a lot of storage space if it became popular enough. I know that a project like this would be massive, but if it really became a thing, it would be one of the most useful tools for ROM addicts.
I'm no developer, I'm no coder, nothing. I have no idea how one would go about doing this, but that's why I came to XDA.

sounds like titanium backup with dropbox but with a few additions. i dont think titanium backup does settings, accounts or messages, just app data. i just use it to quickly get all the apps back on my phone.

So either a correlation between the two are built to support more phone info, or a new app

For contact and sms backup and restoring check http://www.bloove.com. Call logs are backed up but not restored to another phone. Wifi points are in waiting list. It doesn't require root so it's not possible to backup configuration and other apps.

Backup AND RESTORE SMS messages?

Hello,
I've searched the board several times since months and haven't found a solution to my problem yet.
My problem is as follows:
I have my Wizard (O2 Germany, so Xda mini S) since february (in fact it is the third one, O2 support changed it two times because the stylus didn't lock anymore after few weeks of use... have to change it again...).
And few months ago, I tried Sprite Backup, what I am using since then. Although it worked well, one thing is annoying: sometimes after hard reset and restore of only my mail database (cemail.vol, the only thing I really need to be backed up), the Messaging app doesn't show mail accounts anymore, but when I try to create new ones with the same names, it says, that the accounts already exist. So I created new accounts with different names, as many other users did, how I could read here. They co-exist and take memory.
Interesting thing: the Spb Diary messaging program can see the old accounts, and so it is also possible to delete the messages, that are still there in the old accounts. It can take a long time and many clicks (taps), because you can delete only one message at once, but it is better than nothing. One problem persists: Spb Diary can't delete the accounts themselves.
Therefore I am searching for a way to extract only my SMS messages (eMail is not important, I have it all on PC), start with an empty mail database (hard reset) and restore only the SMS messages into that new database.
The only program I have found so far, that really looked well for the first moment, is Jeyo Mobile Extender (or Companion). It backups the SMS Messages to PC, but not all of them. Messages in subfolders are ignored (I have subfolders for delivery notifications, call missed notifications and so on). And the restore doesn't work as expected. The date of the messages gets messed up, long messages (>160 charactes) get cut, and even the sender/receiver of the messages can get flipped.
But it must be possible to write a program, that fits my needs, I think (by the way: what is going on with the developers of WM2005? Backing up messages from mobile device to desktop is ESSENTIAL!!! Why isn't such a feature included?).
And because I am sure that I am not the only one with this problems hoping for a solution, I could imagine that someone already has written such a tool.
So, please, if anyone knows a tool or a different solution (editing mail database, removing everything except SMS messages...), PLEASE, help me!
Thank you very much in advance!
Yeaa im also really looking for a soultion to this, i Recently got a Windows Mobile device and i really wanna just be able to transfer my Series 60 Messages in Text format now.. to my Pocket PC's Messaging.
I can't believe nobody has made an app to backup and restore SMS's despite the growing number of people who need just sucha an app.
Except for Kai's, I don't think there is anything out there that does the job.
I hope SPB includes an option in the future to backup specific accounts only, because it is by far the best messaging backup app I have used till date.

jeyo has. works fine
jeyo is crappy piece of ****. better than nothing, but doesn't back up all messages, no self-created subfolders, no dupe-check, shows error message on ppc on every connect...
you will find out, when it is most important to you, believe me!

Another Noobish questions

On my previous nokia, it came with a full software for the pc which allowed me to do a full back up of my phone, from contacts, to email account settings and set up, calendar, sms, games, the works.
HTC does not.
Is there a program that will allow this. I know our phone comes with two ways to back up emails and contacts, but not the actual account settings, or programs or even lay outs.
If I understand correctly doing an update will reset the phone back to day one.
On my old phone I was able to even place all the settings back, from ring tones to image files and back rounds.
Please advise if there is a good back up/ restore program available for our phones.
Thank you.
you can use Microsoft myphone to backup contacts and a few other things

Thank you for the response. that I know
I need something by a third party which does a better job, and will copy settings files, for example i have 4 non popular email clients runing on my phone. they are for my domains, not Gmail or yahoo or anything liek that.. and take time to set up with the servers and ports and funky passwords, so if there is an app that can copy all of it and store it, then restore after a flash, that would be great.
And im sure one exists, just need to find it.

AppBrain Overwrote my Synced Apps After Flash

So I finally got the chance to put AppBrain to the test. I flashed a new ROM, installed AppBrain and logged in. Instead of bringing my previously synced apps over to my phone it overwrote my sync list with just the currently installed apps on the new ROM.
I don't know how else to use this but I obviously did something out of order because the whole concept would be useless if this is how it worked hehe.
If anyone has an idea on what I did wrong I'd greatly appreciate the advice, I did email them but forum responses are faster .

Yeah I'm using the free version for SMS/MMS backup, I'll probably go for the donate since it has seamless app install (app reinstall on the free version is somewhat of a pain).
I actually bought MyBackupPro when I first got my Hero, but even with its root support it backs up SMS in a very inefficient way, instead of copying the database file like Titanium does, it converts all your messages into an xml file or something (I assume) and takes forever to backup/restore where Titanium takes a couple seconds.
I haven't done it yet, but it looks like you want to do as follows.
AppBrain website > My Apps
Select All > Add to List > Create New List
Give your list a name (I used "backup") and click Create List
Now you have your apps in a separate list that won't be overwritten when you connect up after a wipe.

Yep, I can confirm that the steps work.
I used this workaround all the time while flashing my HTC Touch with various ROMS.
Basically, create a separate "back up" list.
Copy all of the apps you have in your main list to that back up list.
Then when you flash the next time.
It will erase the apps in your primary list.
Just copy the apps list from your "back up" list to your primary list and you will be good to go.
I do agree that this appears to be a problem.
Cool, didn't see (or look for) that option on the website.
Sounds easy enough. Thanks for the help!

Yeah you should have made a new list with your apps backed up there, i figured that was obvious

Why is that obvious? Show me one other sync service that overwrites my database with what's on my newly empty phone. My contacts don't disappear from Gmail when I resync my phone that's newly devoid of contacts, my calendar events don't get cleared, my emails don't vanish.
Sorry for the useless reply, but the way AppBrain works now is not intuitive; it's not difficult to overcome when you know how it works, but it's not the way a user would expect it to work.

06ms6,
I also agree that the App Brain sync process is counter-intuitive.
Other than that, it is a very good app.
Glad you got it squared away.

[Q] Unified / Centralized Messaging Stream?

One of the issues I'm having with Epic and Android 2.1 is functionally by design, but I'm not too comfortable with it.
One of the biggest issues I have is that the updates in the "Notifications" windowshade don't persist. Is there any way to sticky the list? Or is there an app out there which would store all of the Notifications that showed up on the phone?
Somewhat related to the previous idea but taking it one step further, does anyone know of an Android app that acts like a centralized, unified messaging stream? Similar to the concept of the master Messages folder on the Blackberry? Thinking back, if I'm not mistaken, WebOS may have something similarly implementated, but I could be wrong.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the concept seems simple enough: to have nearly everything which produces messages, such as SMS, Emails, Gmails, Social Networking apps, etc., all be consolidated into one unified, sticky stream, in chronological order.
There are other valuable features that the BB Messages folder provides, such as the ability to compose a message using nearly any of the accounts it's unifying, right from the BB Messages folder, and to be able to choose which account to use to send the message.
Then, as a business user, I have other gripes such as lack of total all-push and instantaneous messaging, lack of copy & paste in many areas, but those are superseded by my need for a consolidated view of messages. Too many times I've missed reading email B which showed up in the Notifications drop down only because email A also showed up but took up 10-15 minutes of my attention to address, during which I forget about email B.
What do you think?

[Q] Is there a tool to save "As is" to help restore

I love modding but hate having to enter my passwords, load the apps again, set the ring tones and calendar reminder tones etc etc.
I am looking for a way to save all that info, so that when I load a new ROM I can run the app and Google is there and has my passwords. My 3 email accounts are set up and ready to go. Ring tones and reminder alerts are set up. Home screen is set up. etc etc etc
A tall order I know, but there are a lot of modders and I am sure they are just as frustrated, or maybe they have the solution already??
Please share if you do! Many thanks in advance.
I'll answer my own question, after reading some of the posts on this and other places.
I believe that the Backup program included with MIUI Darkside mod will do what I want if I select System and App backups.
There is also Titanium backup which is an all singing and dancing app that does the same. For now I am trying the included free Backup.
I will report back if it does what I wanted on my next Mod.
Thanks for reading.
Mybackup Root is a consideration. That is what I use for going between ROMs.
You have APKs + data if you want, and then you also have a data section just for mms etc... but I have never used that, I just sync contacts with google and forget the rest.
Not sure of the difference between MyBackup Root and pro versions but root is free ...
At any rate, with a couple of clicks I can just leave the app restoring everything ... you could try it along with your other backup, doesn't cost you anything ..
I find it fast and less cumbersome than Titanium although I only used the free version.
