Good Evening from the uk
earlier on today a bunch of devs managed to actually root this tablet using a modified version of gingerbreak
below is the walkthrough of how to root this device
1. make sure usb debugging is turned on and unknown sources is selected
2. have a micro sd card inserted and turn the tablet on portrait and lock it with the switch to fix it in portrait
3. download and execute the attached apk. (i had to download from my comp and transfer to the tablet for it to work)
4. once the apk is installed run the root procedure within the app which was installed
5. wait and you will receive full root access
Edit to add original dev and thread
A BIG BIG thank you to monki-magic who provided the modified apk and the original thread is

Fantastic job! I got my Iconia A500 rooted.
I could run the file without having to transfer from PC.
hmm it gave me a pharse error when i downloaded it straight to the tab
Beautiful!
Easy, easy, easy!
Thanks to the devs for making this happen so soon.
Loving my Acer A500 even more.
(Eee transformer? *yawn*)
Anyone working on building a cifs.ko? I'd love to be able to use cifsmanager to mount Windows drives and access them from any Android application (comic reader, movie player, etc.)??
Wow that's fast. I will try this tonight.
Many thnx for this.

Good luck with that, and the IPS on the transformer is not that great, kind of choppy for games. People are expecting an iPad2 style ips and it is NOT. The refresh rate is too low, the color is just a tad crisper then the Acer. Barely noticeable to the eye. Friend got his and sold it on ebay for the Acer, the USB was more important then the ips, and ips is great for graphic designers but gamers, not so much. Why do you think in every review people complained about choppy video... It because it is a cheap ips with a cheap refresh rate. Hence the price. Just my $0.02. Glad the Iconia got some love with their own section. It will be about June before you get one.
Thank you very much the root work perfectly , really appreciate your sharing.
Thanks....I´m going to try later and let you know how it worked!!!!
Let´s make this tablet work better!!!!
(waiting for Honeycomb update....)
donated $5 (more than i've spent on any app), thanks!
and... rooted! much easier than my desire... awesome job guys!
thank you very much!
freaking awesome!
so simple to root. downloaded from the tab and installed from it. no pc needed! awesome. installing rom manager now but no clockworkmod for this yet... only 1 acer device is listed... any brave people willing to try it?.. jejeje
Is that it?
Really?
Those five steps.
No preparation, nothing else needed.
Just turn on my device, follow those five steps and it's done.
Why do I feel like there's something I am missing here?
If it's five steps to root then I am dead impressed!

Dear Augen Customers (GEN Nation),
Thank you for showing your support and interest in our GENTOUCH78 Tablet. We became aware of the technical difficulties over the past 24 hours, and we will be posting an update for a patch to the software at the following link: http://augen.helpserve.com/ under latest download files within the next 48 hours.

Hopefully someone gets one with some dev skills or just is able to make a custom recovery. Once that happens it's on. I'm wondering if adw launcher can be installed on this thing
I also got one, there's a patch coming tomorrow for the market problem. I can't install apps with APK's in gmail either without a katcher.
It's a sweet device so far. it's resistive touch, I don't think you can turn up sensitivity but we'll see.
ES File Manager comes Pre Loaded.. you can add any app APK to the SD card. and use ES File Manager to install
Installing Quadrant, and some games right now.. I'll post back
I picked this up and I am going to be creating a dev thread on this. I am not an expert on this by any means but I did get it rooted, got Titanium Backup on it (had to install Download Crutch from my SD card than downloaded TB from an APK I found online), and got ADW on it. Runs OK, I don't like the resistive screen and I agree with others that this is a really rigged build on this device. Market issue for me too, can't wait for the update.
EDIT: Dev thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7409528#post7409528
How did you root? I'd love any info you can give. where's your thread
Edit: Quadrant got just below the Moto droid according to there results. it was around 300 or so if i remember right. it was just below the Droid. It got good and smooth FPS during the 3D tests. It has the Mali-200 GPU inside with a texture unit rate of 8 units.
Linpack it scored a 3.962 or something but then i closed it. It's charging right now.. Does anyone know why it says I have Edge service and Roaming? as well as Telelco Loco for the service where my phone says T-Mobile. hjaha

Did you mean A500, if not where did you get an A501?
Try this:
Search the forum for 'IconiaRoot 1.2'
Works fine on HC 3.1 and no orientation BS to worry about. Also much faster and does include UNroot option.
Thanks a lot, I'll try it and give you the feedback.
No, it's A501.

Check youn permissions on the ad-hoc file or the program on the phone you are tethering to.u use wireless tether switched from barnacle. As it seems faster.but cost ten bucks

Thank you. At least YOUR post was helpful unlike FATmans there. I will try my other contact and get some information on it.
1. Did you make sure USB Debugging is turned on?
2. Did you make sure Loading from Unknown Sources is turned on?
3. Make sure when you run Gingerbreak, the tablet is in Portrait mode...Gingerbreak will crash if it is run in Landscape mode.
I had that issue last night rooting my replacement A500. I realized I forgot to turn on USB Debugging. If that's the case, turn on USB Debugging and restart the tablet, then run GingerBreak again.

Acer "launched" the A500, A501, A100 and A101 tablets all at the same time, at the various electronics shows around the world. All the news sites online carried news of all 4 models, and their website lists them as well, even in the support section (and the A100 series isn't even available yet).
There's no way an Acer employee wouldn't have known about it if they had anything at all to do with the mobile devices division.
hi there,
if you are still using stock rom on your a501, just dont flash any custom rom from dev section... u will lose 3g functions
but then i think u can help the dev by giving the dumping of your stock rom, maybe to help we a500 users get easier and better 3g
Yes I am sure I did what exactly they told on their articles.

Now there is some good advice.
Also, gives it a chance to see if there are any defects you need to return it for. Is much easier to return a "stock" tablet, compared to one that is fubarred due to messing up a custom rom flashing.
Technically, rooting a device voids it's warranty. Technically. That's why people try to revert back to stock before returning it due to defects.

Thanks so much. It seems there are several versions available. Which do you recommend? Or should I wait a few days since it seems a new ROM will be available. I really like how 3.2.1 OTA looks and works. But I really need Ad-Hoc wifi. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

I have not had to downgrade .I waited until there was a rooted update.you can however try the new pda-net app in the market for tethering.

Why?
Someone should make a sticky similar to this .Lots of bricked devices over and over
Can someone give me some icecream .. RIGHT NOW...
My best tip and advice i can give anyone is the fallowing..
BEFORE FLASHING HACKING OR CHANGING YOUR TABLET AT ALL... DO THE FALLOWING
1 Turn your iconia off and put it in the other room.Far away from you..
2 start with the general Forum on xda read every forum related to someone bricking and hacking there device..
3 read all the [email protected] forum threads ..
4 read EVERY FORUM THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT THREAD.. 3 TIMES !!!!!
5 GO BACK AND READ EVERYTHING IN THE DEVELOPMENT THREAD..
6 MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE DEVELOPERS AND SMART GUYS WHO HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER
7.. BE NICE TO ERICA.. GIGGLES..
8. Back up Back up AND BACK UP YOUR BACKUPS TO TWO OR MORE PLACES..
Now if you have completed all of the above.. Save your money up so that you have enough to replace your tablet . Do this in the event that something goes wrong.. It can happen to anyone who flashes a device..
Then Be nice To Erica Renee..
and good luck flashing.
one more then .. when you make a backup...
try restoring it.. before you flash your tablet.. lots of people have made backups that failed....
one more thing
BE NICE TO Erica Renee...
have a nice day and dont forget to Be Nice to Erica..Renee.. xoxoxo
Are people being mean to you or something? You really want this person to be nice to you

I think he means he got it a day early. I also got this tablet for Christmas. But I'm not interested in rooting mine. Just interested in the stock experience of Honeycomb.
Matt
Hey guys,
I just got an Iconia for Christmas and love it to death. Seems like the perfect tablet for me.
I see a lot of stuff on this forum about rooting however and I'm curious what the practical benafits to rooting are. I origionally had planned to route the iconia because I heard it didn't support netflix but the netflix app seems to work fine on my device so I'm happy there.
There were a lot of things that made me want to route my phone (Samsung Epic) such as the desire to tether other devices to it and get rid of all the Samsung, pre-istalled BS and Touch Wiz which made the phone run slowly. Those considerations don't exist here as Honey Comb seems to be plenty fast and there doesn't appear to be many BS additions from Acer.
So, with all that in mind, what exactly does one gain practically by rooting the Iconia?
I rooted my a500 so I could connect to ad-hoc networks and use ntfs drives.

It is a very personal question in the sense that there is no one, single reason why people root. I for example rooted because I needed ad-hoc wifi, otherwise I could have well survived without rooting. Once I did root my tablet I did of course install CWM so I can take a full backup of the whole thing -- better safe than sorry, as they say -- and tried a few different ROMs too, though I then went back to stock as it was the least buggy.
Just ask yourself: is there anything I need root for?
I think I root for a few different reasons.
ClockworkMod for nandroid backup and other things.
Titanium backup for app/data backup and easy bloat remove/restore.
AdFree
overclocking and other performance adjustments
Cifs/Samba support - I have 3 androids with share links on my PC desktop for drag-n-drop file copying without wires.
Root explorer of course.
Drive mount seems to need it.
Oh and theming - I like to theme and make small code changes.
Essentially, if you need to ask that question, you don't need to root your device....
You'll know when you need to...

What does that have to do with the fact that I found all the custom ROMs I tried buggy?
Thanks for the advice everyone.
I was all set to root because I heard that Netflix wasn't functioning on the Iconia and rooting was easy.
Now I find that Netflix works fine and apparently I shouldn't have let my tablet update when I first turned it on.
Guess I'll leave my Iconia alone for now.

One word really - titanium - there is just no better way to make a full backup.
But having said that - with all the rumors of ICS withing maybe weeks - rooting may not be such a good idea right now ... most OTA updates do tend to have issues with rooted devices.
Westa
why root
i root for:
cwm recovery image
optimized roms
titanium backup (altho my stuff is mostly cloud so this is just a bonus)
while i understand why people say only root if you have to, if you've made your way here i'd suggest you do it anyways if only for the clockworkmod recovery while more or less makes your system unbrickable. when you start looking at custom icon packs, gps, wifi and lag fixes, optimized filesystems etc. it gets a lot more appealing.
thanks to those that tirelessly work out the kinks in the process for us.
Havent seen a reason yet to root my A500 as it does everything I want, possibly if I got a wildhair and wanted to install a custom rom. On the other hand I bought a Kindle Fire and I rooted it and had a custom rom installed withing a week, primarily to make it more like my Acer.

Unbrickable? I keep seeing threads of peopleeho havd just bricked their systems while trying to foot. It's the main reason why imhesitant to root.
I just got mine and always thought I would root it, but I don't see the point yet.
I rooted my Evo so that I can remove bloat, increase battery life, and most important wirelessly tether with my tablet.
The battery life on my tablet seems amazing, honeycomb seems fast and the bloat doesn't bother me as much.

i rooted and installed thors rom, its awesome.
No real reason either, I just know from past experience every device is made more enjoyable with the right rom.
Plus with ics coming soon ill have to be able to backup my data to survive the upgrade.
I find out About Rooting (or unlocking) before I buy any device
#1 Freezing Apps (like Deleting, only safer -Titanium Backup)
#2 OverClocking to 1.5 Ghz and still being stable (up to 1.64)
#3 Under clock (216,245 mhz) (saving battery life)
#4 fun to be "ABLE" to tweak out something.
#5 Example : -a new trick to get better Wi-Fi or 3G Signal, or better GPS (you'll need ROOT to edit system data)
KNOWING that you can always get back to stock in under 5-7 min (if you have to bring in device)
Leaves you a better question.
"Why have you NOT ROOTED it yet?"

Well bricking your tablet is normal when you try to foot it.
Sorry just made my laugh.
Maybe you should use auto correction.
Or maybe I should keep trying to foot it and see how many attempts I need to brick it.
I just got this tablet for Xmas, well the Packard bell one but from my understanding there the same. I still need to root mine. I've heard that you can connect a ps3 control if your rooted. Is this the only requirement?

With that said..
I think if you have to ask WHY ROOT your device.. My Question is what Does your device not do that you need? And will rooting the device solve this for you..
its risk vs benefits . the oldest Android Question in the book .. Should i foot.. or should i not foot...
Just want to add a more recent layman's opinion on the 8.4 Pro. I was really hesitant to get this because of the lack of development but I took the plunge...
Coming from the Note 8 (n5110), which was never terribly pleased with, I love this Pro. It is much faster, better screen, and a better size for these aging eyes.
I used Gunthermic's deodex root zip (awesome!!!) and twrp, which was really easy, and I'm playing with xposed mods now for more customization.
I'm not thrilled with the screen font (for the status bar--really small) but I'm hoping for more development on this tablet but even if that doesn't occur, this is a keeper, at least for me.

I downloaded Gunthermics amazing zip here and placed it in the external sd card of the tablet (plug the tablet in to the pc, click "computer", it should show up as an external device--you'll have to have all the Samsung drivers installed)
Then I downloaded TWRP here
and installed through Odin 3.09. Then rebooted into TWRP (power + vol up) and installed the zip from there.
Reboot...Awesomeness!
Thank you Gunthermic!
