[Q] Newbie CM7 questions - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed CM 7.02 to eMMC yesterday.
Is there a sort of CM7 GUI user guide? I don't know if it behaves like it should or not.
For example, in the status bar I see notification icons for some programs. But when I click on them only narrow gray panel with few stripes pops up. Is it normal?
I can see full-screen notification panel only if I tap "circle with green arrow" icon.
I used rooted NC stock 1.1 before and I used Titanium backup.
After installing CM7 I downloaded Titanium backup from Market and restored most of the apps (>100). I restored "apps with data" but not system data. Is it the right way to migrate from stock?
Some apps work but for example, Amazon Appstore can't accept my login/password. Should I uninstall it and reinstall from web? Will it recognize device and allow to use apps that were free for one day but now paid?
Google Market only offers me to re-install paid apps, not free ones.
Added: And I also restored autostarts. It disables certain apps from starting after certain events. I used it with stock. Its settings seem to be restored to. Can this damage CM7?
What's the best way to migrate apps from stock to CM7?
How can I read/write data on my Nook from Windows through USB?
I understand that CM7 uses Linux partition and I need some tools (?) but why can't I see my SD card in NC as I used to do with stock ROM? I don't have ADB or SDK on PC, didn't need it for stock.
My SD card is formatted FAT32. I don't think CM7 altered it because from Nook I can see all files.
But in Windows I only see two drive letters when I connect NC with USB, no data can be read, it says "device not ready".

This is normal, try dragging the little panel with the stripes that pops up to the top of your screen.

Eh, the market works for me. It's usually pretty quick to just grab whatever isn't installed off the market when i need it.

You may need to manually tell cm7 to share with windows, there will be an option for that in the notification bar when you plug it it.
You could also try a different USB port. Sometimes when i'm in windows it will stop working when plugged into the front of my computer, sometimes when plugged into the back. Switching to another port always clears things up.

It also sounds like you may want to turn off "Compatibility Mode" under the Spare Parts app...

Thanks a lot, everything works now.
It looks like Zeam launcher scrolls screens a bit slower in CM7 than in stock ROM. Not that smooth and I overclocked to 925MHz "on demand".
I tried ADW with minimum icons and it looks a bit smoother. But Zeam has >100 icons on 5 screens. Don't know how ADW will behave with that many. And I like many icons on bottom dock that Zeam allows.
What is the recommended fast launcher for CM7 with configurable dock?

CM6 - apps on SD do not auto startup?

Apologies if this has been answered before but I've tried for a few days and can't find the answer. Basically, I have a N1 with the latest stable CM6 release with FAT32 on my sd. If an app is transfered over to sd (app2sd or manage apps), it no longer auto starts up on boot and it may not show up on the widget list (Engadget app, for example). I just wondered if there was a way around this problem? Or do I need to use a ext2 partition for this to work better? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.
Jim
Apps with widgets and/or background processes shouldn't be put on SD. Widgets can get screwed up a number of ways, exactly how can depend on your launcher (both ADW and Launcher Pro will drop them from the widget list after a reboot). Background stuff either won't start on boot, or will cut out if you plug it in and turn on mass storage mode. Live wallpapers will disappear from your homescreen, and you'll have to go back into the menu and reapply it.
Indeed, don't put anything on SD for which you require a widget or uninterrupted operation when SD is not mounted.
As for just plain apps, I find that it takes 30-60 seconds after boot appears to have completed, for my SD apps to start functioning and for their icons to appear properly in ADWLauncher.

[How To]Disable the micro SD card icon on status bar.

A lot of peoples wanted to know if there's a way to disable the micro sd card
icon on the status bar. Sometimes I'll tap on it and ummount the micro sd card by accident.
Must have ROOT
I found that using HideBar, after you hide the status bar and enable the status bar again. The micro sd card icon is gone. The micro sd card is still mounted.
This will stay hidden till a reboot.

HoneyBar also work
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hanhuy.android.hsbm&feature=search_result
Funny I just logged on to look into this. Drives me crazy. It should go away after a second or something but it doesn't.
I had honeybar but just got rid of it since Revolver has this option in the power window and trying to trim some fat.
UPDATE: hidebar force closes with revolver 3.6
Honeybar worked previously though.
Anyway we can just disable the popup?

persist.microsd.notify=0
Wonder if that would work if added to the build.prop file.
I'll try it later, after my TF is done charging.
EDIT: Didn't work, also persist.service.mount.notify didn't work.
Don't really see the problem, the icon has a link to unmount sdcard and to view contents.

I like having a clean statusbar and the SDcard icon stops that. I always thought it should've been a constant icon in the actual notification popup (when you hit the clock) and not something on the statusbar, or atleast an option to unmount it there. I don't really like the stock file explorer, so losing that option is fine with me.

That's the problem, keep accidently unmount the sd card. Well not so much a problem but an annoyance.

Ah, yeah, I see now. I wonder if maybe the image was removed or made to be transparent in the framework, at least you wouldn't have it in the status bar, but then you could still accidentally hit it, cause the "link" would still be there.
Just a thought.

No, the link is gone, even when you pull up the notification there's no link.
This is fixed in the new update. Finally!

Is there a settings or something? I'm on the latest firmware and still have the micro sd card icon. I can hide it using the hide taskbar method but beside that it still show.
Yeah how do you hide it on stock ROM?

I don't think it's possible even with the latest update. No where in the change log.
Has this been solved? For me it is especially annoying as I have second ext4 partition for Apps2SD and cm13 shows me two sd card icons, one of them designated as corrupted
the solution for CM13 users is force close system UI for once! May work for others its a glitch not a feature

MIUI V4 -Tip Sharing Thread

So, I have been using MIUI V4 for a few days now and I LOVE IT! I wanted to share a tip in the MIUI V4 tip thread...but couldn't find one. There's one for the older version of MIUI (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498809) written by omair2005 but nothing specifically for V4.
I'd like to thank Omair2005 for the original post. It very informative and even if you are on V4, you need to read it...you need to thank him for it!
Many of the tips on Omair2005's post will work with V4 and I will be pulling those into this post as time allows, but until then, I'd like to share some of my tips. Some of these are just my observations and may not be 100% accurate or the best way to do something. If anyone has any recommendations or corrections, please let me know and I will update them
For me, one of the best/worst things about MIUI was ALL the application icons on the home screen. With the initial flash, there are a few screens with icons for all my apps showing. I loved it.
Once I restored all my apps it was a different story. I had 8 screens full of icons...all over the place with no logical order.
I started organizing them into folders...but then I couldn't remember which folder had what and I truly missed my App Drawer. While trying to organize one of my folders, I mistakenly dropped it on to the dock...then I realized.......
I could put a folder on the dock...call it Applications (or whatever) and put everything I didn't want on the home screens in there...then sort them in the folder and viola, I have my App Drawer back.
There are a few limitations such as no full screen view of apps or the ability to sort the folder...but maybe in the future, someone will figure it out.
Miss the scrolling wallpaper - go to Menu -> Launcher Settings and select 'High quality graphics'.
SMS gibberish is still happening for me with the stock Messaging app. I use a 3rd party app like Handcent or GoSMS and they have an option to split large messages into multiple messages. This seems to work for me.
WiFi access to SD card
Accessing the SD card through USB is not functioning. You can, however, gain access to your SD card through WiF: enter “File Explorer” on the desktop, select the "FTP" tab. Hit start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!
Long press on the icon in Toggles to launch the settings for that icon.
When you pull down the notification bar, you will see the Toggle settings for plenty of options (such as WIFI, volume, backlight etc). Long press on any icon in the Toggle mode will launch the setting for that icon.
Built-in Screen Capture function
One of the lacking feature in Android is the lack of a built-in screen capture feature (like in iPhone). Not anymore. With MIUI, you can press the “Menu” key and “Volume Down” key at the same time to capture a screenshot. The printed image is saved in the “MIUI: directory in the sd card.
Home Screen previews
In previous versions of MIUI, hitting the home button while on the home screen would bring up the home screen previews. This no longer works. In V4, from any screen, hit Menu, Preview.
Move home screen icon easily
Hold down an icon by one hand to enter Edit Mode, and then use the other hand to slide the screen to move the icon to the target screen.
Launch Music Player in lockscreen
In the lockscreen, double tap the time zone to launch the Music Player. (The Music Player is hidden by default, unless a song is playing)
Running Apps List: Long press on the Home button and it will bring you to your running apps list. Swipe the an app either left or right to close them one at a time, or click the “Broom” icon at the bottom left to close all listed apps and clear the extra processes in memory. The bar across the top will inform you of the used memory and current available memory.
Note: System processes will not be cleared so as to ensure the normal running of the system. The Android icon on the bottom right will bring you to the running services portal in settings.
Percentage Battery Indicator Style: To change the battery icon to a percentage, slide down your notification bar, select the 'Toggles' tab and then hit the 3 dots in the top right. From there, you can change the status bar settings. One of those settings being Battery indicator style.
Note: It does not show a percentage while charging...Only when unplugged and discharging.
Add a favorite in the messaging app: In the new messaging app, there are three tabs on the top: "Messaging | Favorites | Recommended" If you go into Favorites, there is nothing in there and there really isn't any method for adding one. I found that if I go to a message that I had already sent...long press the message bubble and Lock it, it shows in the Favorites.

Anyone reading these? I feel like I am talking in an empty room.
This is good, but until its not alpha these options and settings may change. Also you should mention that theme support is not fully functional cause of upstream issues.

also any bugs present in cm9 will be in miui as well (ex: video tearing)
tomorrow's MIUI release should have a lot of upstream fixes and if cm9 alpha 6 comes out sooner than later, we might have an awesome miui v4 build!
I have been using this rom since it was released and so far, for me, it has been incredible. I tried the last version of MIUI and really gave it a chance(4 days.....like an eternity!)...but for some reason or another, I couldn't get myself to 'love' it.
With this version, I notice less issues with the video, less issues with force closes and overall, a more 'flashy' experience!
On the down site, I do notice that it gets HOT sometimes...and that usually means my battery is going to be killed. I have noticed at times that the drop is 10-12% per hour......
But I digress....let's keep the thread focused on Tips/Tricks for the rom!
Thanks for your feedback.

[Q] Just upgraded to CM9 ICS.....

.... and I have some questions that someone can hopefully answer. I've searched thru the Nook Color forums but couldn't find anything relevant.
First: Installation to EMMC on my Nook Color was flawless and all my apps installed and ran without problem.
This CM9 release is AWESOME! Everything looks and works great!!! Its so nice to have all the icons look great without having to screw with LCD density.
Questions: First question really important... other two just annoyances.
1) Full Screen Apps: I have Auto Hide checked under System>Combined Bar. Yet the status bar will not go away when running full screen apps such as Angry Birds, PowerAmp, and Repligo Reader. Is there another setting somewhere for this???? Or is this something that's broken and waiting to be fixed????
2) Soft Buttons in the status bar: There are three buttons showing: Back, Home & Recent Apps. The Home button is redundant as the Nook button does that. The Recent Apps button is totally useless for me and I would like to change it to a Menu button. But I can't find any settings for the Soft Buttons like there was in CM7 under the CyanogenMod settings.
3) Power Control Widget: I was able to turn buttons off and on in settings for the Power Control Widget in CM7. That appears not to be the case in CM9.... I only need and want the WiFi and Brightness buttons. How do I select Power Control Buttons in CM9?????
Running CyanogenMod version 9-20120703-UNOFFICAL-encore
Take a look at the AOKP port for the nook by Krylon360 in the dev thread. All that is possible.

Some things fixed....
I was unable to download Zeam Launcher from Google Play.
Said my device was incompatible.
Bullfeathers......
Found the newest Zeam version v3.1.10, downloaded and installed it, and it works just fine.
Running Zeam fixed problem number 1 above.... with Zeam running, the status bar is moved back to the top and all my full screen applications work perfectly now.
Problem number 2 has changed somewhat.... no soft buttons now in the status bar. This isn't a real problem as I'm used to using Button Savior, which really helps when in a full screen app. It would still be nice to move the status bar back to the bottom and have the Back and Menu soft buttons, but I can live with the way it is now.
Problem number 3 is still valid and I hope someone out there knows something about it.
Thanks j8048188 (wild handle there!)
I'll check it out, but at the moment I'm now totally happy with this version of CM9 as it sits.
Started playing with this upgrade at 4:30 this afternoon and now have everything the way I want it for a while. Time to actually use it instead of hacking it!
About wifi and brightness buttons.
I don't think you really need them, as when you touch the clock a mini menu appears with sliding bars to adjust them both.
Unleashed from my Revolutionized Desire HD
I see what you mean... controls available by tapping the clock.
But that window is still two touches away before actually changing the brightness or turning the wifi on or off. While the power control bar is just one touch.

[Q] Custom quick nav icons

In the past two weeks or so I've tried every method I could find on XDA and elsewhere to modify app icons and names so I could customize my quick nav buttons and make them a unified set after using Nook Touch Mod Manager to assign different apps to them (I know...picky, picky, picky).
Clearly some people have done this. I have not. Can someone who has done it point me in the direction of a tutorial that really works for a noob? I'm trying to change icons and names for market apps, not system apps.
Have you tried apk edit? If not look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890199

I did. In various versions. It either ran continuously (with ADW or GMail apps, for example) or crashed on applying changes (with Opera Mobile, for example). I do have Java (v. 7) and .NET framework (4) installed. Unless I have to roll back to .NET 3.5, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
The other thing that occurs to me with APK Edit on re-reading that post is that it seems to assume a real communication to root via USB. Plugging in the Nook ST to my computer probably doesn't supply that kind of access. And I haven't gone through the trial of setting up ADB because I've never had any use for it. If I thought that would help, I'd struggle through that.
[SOLVED!]
Victory! After being emboldened by successfully modifying the menu background tones in framework-res.apk (thanks to mergen3107 here--post 23) I finally began to understand the post by ladykayaker here--post 83) and...
Ta-da!
Even better, they work
Thanks I never would have gotten there if you hadn't helped me with getting the modded framework file back onto the Nook.
When you told me the screen font for the quicknav button icons I looked through my store of fonts and the closest thing I had was Gill Sans MT. To my eye it didn't look quite right. So I kept a stock icon in my editor all the time, side-by-side with the one I was altering. The stock font was a little taller it seemed to me. I ended up using 16 pt. but it still was not quite right, so in the end I replaced the label in the library icon (which is otherwise unchanged) so that everything would match--that was the whole idea to begin with anyway!
I tried to keep things generic enough so that even if I change apps in the background (like I just changed from the frequently malfunctioning GMail to Email) all I have to do is edit settings.db instead of creating a new quicknav icon.
Hmm....maybe that globe need to come down just a tad......
