Is it possible to extract Sense UI and somehow create an APK file from it so it can be installed on any Android phone? I Like the HTC Desire, but i also really like the Motorola Droid & the Sony Ericcson X10, but they just dont have that overall edge without Sense. It would be really good if this could be done!
Thanks
Short answer, no. Long answer [idk. ask someone smart cuz I just dk.]
if i had a phone with sense i'd be able to tell you.
it depends on if its embedded or just a package..
if it's like a home replacement then yes.
theoretically its definitely possible but i have never even seen sense in person.
maybe someone with a desire or hero can chime in?

Not without all of Htc's closed-source frameworks
The fact that it hasn't been done yet, and that all non-HTC devices able to run it are in fact running hacked HTC roms, should tell you something.
No worries, there is actually a team whose working on porting the Sense UI to the droid

they have ported it, you just cant take the rosie.apk and put it on the market and download it and wola you have sense ui. the rosie.apk is completely depandent on HTC's framework.
I was thinking more along the lines of an update.zip to actually replace those framework files.
I didn't think it would be as simple as an .apk package installation.
I have hardly done any developing for android (yet) but wouldn't a logcat or dalvik readout give you enough info on which files are dependent on sense ui?
You throw those into a zip, sign it and put it on any device with the same version of android that hasn't been butchered by the manufactuer.
Update it and voila.
I doubt HTC went through the trouble to encrypt files specifically for each device..
Would it by any means be possible to port this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788389 to the legend device?
I would gladly help if anyone would teach me.

It probably is possible. However it's not as straight forward as you think. The Legend is somewhat built differently.
superb ui i have ever seen in android..better than iphone. porting is not fully possible........but u can make similar ui..........any way nice one....and aliba want to see this ....[a gifted devlp] [someone send a private message to him]

Because of the different hardware.. if it was easy to do so the froyo for desire would also have been ported by now

Yeah allright. But I suppose it's possible to port some of the stuff? The launcher maybe?

Last I saw, there was somebody in the G1 forums trying to get MIUI ported to G1. From there, since there would be no resolution difference, it shouldn't be too hard to get it onto other HVGA screens. Also, something optimized for a G1 would run blazing fast on most other devices, I assume.
Search for MIUI for HVGA screens, see what comes up and if you can find the guy. If it works, I'd love to see it get ported to my Hero.
Maybe there is some hope afterall.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794871 - these guys are doing all the hard work resizing the images. If the ROM gets ported to G1, it should be easy to port it from G1 to Legend, right?
Give them some time... week or two... we'll see if they will give up on this or not. Converting images from hdpi to mdpi is not that straight forward job, especially with .9 pngs.
*yawn*
Seems like legend wouldnt see any MIUI.
I wish i hadnt seen that miui demo video
There are some progress in porting the png images for hvga devices though..

I'm not sure if any of that is useful other than the OfficeApp, but I may play with the others. Thanks for the link.
EDIT: The keyboard is lame other than the arrow keys feature. A keyboard with arrow keys and a num-pad would be the way to go.

I suspect they're thinking about the PixelQI screen in transreflective mode where the increased contrast of the keyboard will still make it very useable.
Sign apk? ahh, i'm a designer not a programmer, i merely opened up the apk, modified one of the skins (a png file) for a test.
so, all ive done is altered the filesize and date of one of the inner files.
How does one "sign" an apk?

Anyone got maild working on the Vega? I flashed via CW but couldnt locate it after reboot... doesnt seem to install anywhere
got mail'd working but can't get contacts to show up. i didn't flash it though. unzipped the file on the vega and installed the apk from the folder
I've tried some of the apps here, I'll leave my two cents.
mail app: Brilliant. I love the way it manages the accounts and the look & feel.
Sniffer App (file manager): Looks kind of cool, but doesn't recognize the USB drive.
Calendar: Looks nice but I don't use it ,so can't compare.
Browser: With the email, the best of the lot. Just one annoying thing. I have to reinstall it every time I reboot. Weird.
I was wondering if someone with a bit more experience could help me out? This may not be possible till source is out but hey no hurt in trying. If so when source is available then I will know where the files I need are located.
Here's what I found in my research so far...
I see a keyguard_screen_tab_unlock.xml and keyguard_screen_tab_unlock_land.xml that are used in framework-res.apk as well as the 4 holo drawable's.
Then I found the WaveView.smali files in framework.jar widget folder.
Also in android.policy.jar impl folder is LockScreen$WaveViewMethods.smali.
Here is a link to the files I pulled out - http://bit.ly/fJpF6V
Any help would be awesome, again I have no clue if this is possible?

No, you must have access to the Media folder, and the only way to do that, is to root, so you will have access to the System folders.
What stock ICS intro are you talking about? I'd like to see... You got a YouTube link or something? Not all stock ICS intros are the same, as different manufacturers use different ones, so I'm curious as to which one you're talking about.

No you don't need root access. You can use ADB to push it to /data/local

yeah all my android devices are rooted. I am pretty good at following instructions and using adb. I just have no need for it as this device uses a pretty vanilla version of android -which I am happy about.

This is true.
Though I avoided rooting for a while and when I made my bootanimations [in my sig] I was doing the adb routine which is definitely more involved than rooting. Well, more involved than rooting GB/HC 3.1 anyways... *nudge nudge*

I know what you mean. Problem is, it's been 2 yrs since I used adb on my Desire.... and I'm ashamed to say... I forgot how to use it!!!
Nifty little tool, is JRummys toolbox. You can copy about 50 bootanimation.zips and swap them at will. Of course you need root, but hey....
Probably some other apps that do the same thing.
For me, I only re-boot my tab, when I test a rom. So boot ani's are sort of not needed. No offense Gamma
Those are some nice animations. I will probably use one of them.
Maybe I will root if someone comes out with a ice cream sandwich rom

Well, there is 1. 90 percent working. It's an ASOP build, which means, it doesn't have 500/501 specific drivers for it. (camera doesn't work, nor 3g for 501).
I have a 501, and I use skype for business. So I need cameras and 3g.
Yeah the camera drivers seem to be the problems. I was running the creamed glacier rom on my mytouch an issue with poweramp (my favorite music player) and went back to cyanogenmod .
Off topic sorry... how do you move the cursor while typing with no directional pad or cursor keys on a tablet? It is difficult to get it just where you need it!
The cyanogenmod team said due to the camera drivers most likely there will not be a fully working cyanogenmod 9 rom out for any phones until the carriers release their updates for the phones. : (
As far as using adb..
I found a windows program that i use from time to time.. QTadb .. LOOK it up.. IT HAS Some of the built in adb commands with some drag and drop features..
There is also another one i forget the name that is even more..
do a net search FOR GUI ADB Windows program .. or something similar.. Its like buttons for dos.. 20 years ago... Call me a Cheater if you like But remember im Blonde...
