[Q] Browser 800px width no quirks mode? - A7 General

Is there any way to make the embedded browser work like non-mobile 800px wide browser? Now it pretends to be wider so the fonts are tiny. If I zoom in there is horizontal scroll. It would be much better if the browser did not try to pretend that the width is wider than it is and render pages in 800px wide mode. I tried to find this option in settings but failed. Does it exist?

I use Dolphin HD...beta, and just a tap tap enlages the fonts, tap tap and it goes back. Also reads a ton of gestures. Works for me. Got it off the market.

I run my browser in full mode, under more and settings option unchecked mobile view mode...

^this.
Seems to work pretty good for me. The only issue I have is that for some reason, even using the "Desktop" UA String, a few sites will occasionally redirect me to their mobile site.

2 Browser Questions (option setting or root tweak?)

First of all, I love my phone and I love the stock Android browser.
With that said, I see two ways the browser could be slightly improved.
I often find myself managing multiple tabs in the browser (4-6 at any given time). I find that when I go to my open tabs (Menu > Windows), it's very hard to tell which one is the active tab. I think they're listed in the order in which they're opened, but that doesn't help me when I constantly jump back and forth between them. There's no indication which tab is active, and the fact that the font is so large and you have a truncated URL and page title makes it difficult to tell what's what.
Is there an option or tweak that allows the active tab to be bolded/colored differently, font size to be reduced, display to be thumbnailed rather than listed, or to arrange the tabs in a different way (ie; last viewed on top rather than first viewed)?
My second question has to do with locking the orientation of the browser to either portrait or landscape. This would be useful if I'm laying in bed on my side reading webpages. I'd want the orientation to "stick" to portrait so that I'm reading like normal rather than have the browser switch to landscape and have to angle my phone so that the accelerometer switches back and stays on portrait.
Is there an option or tweak to force the browser to "stick" to either portrait or landscape mode for a given period of time?
Browser > More > Settings and check Landscape-only display.
Not sure about the other question though.

Hmm, what I actually need it to do is lock into portrait mode, not landscape.
You should check out Dolphin Browser HD. Tabbed browsing, orirntation settings, add ons, tons more. Just search for it in the market.

Here is a screenshot if how it looks. The tabs at the top can be scrolled to the left or right if you have a few.

HTC did a much better job at tweaking the browser in Android than Samsung. (myTouch slide is my other phone).

I agree to an extent, feels choppy when you choose a window on the slide though, and you're stuck with 3 tabs Max on it, I actually like HTC sense more than espresso.

Solution: An app called "AutoRotate Switch."
Works flawlessly! Tapping the icon toggles between locked and unlocked orientations. Amazing.
I read about it here: http://lifehacker.com/5621959/autorotate-switch-toggles-screen-rotation-on-your-android-phone
Still in search of a solution to problem #1 which was:
Is there an option or tweak that allows the active browser tab to be bolded/colored differently, font size in tab overview page to be reduced, display of thumbnail overview page to be thumbnailed rather than listed, or to arrange the tabs in a different way (ie; last viewed on top rather than first viewed)?

Opera Mobile

Opera Mobile 10.1 for Android was released on the Market today.
Works on the Tab and seems pretty good so far - however on my Tab it won't start in portrait mode. If you have the same problem, switch to landscape and you'll be fine. Once it's loaded, you can switch back to portrait.

Dave
Oh, I didn't try landscape mode ! Thanks for the tip (off to re-install the app now...)
EDIT: it worked. However I find the font spacing/kerning excessive, the blurry text transitions whilst zooming are highly distracting, and the small text size + lack of adaptive layout rendering (column width auto resizing) means that I am promptly uninstalling Opera now (on the plus side, it loads pages pretty quick...albeit without any Flash capabilities as far as I can tell). Dolphin HD and xScope remains my favorite web browsers, by a long way.
Yep, no flash, few settings, no text wrapping, dodgy Java rendering... a dissapointing beta.
crashed on startup
It just crashes on startup here.
Have you tried switching to landscape before starting Opera as I said in my original post?
Regards,
Dave
Another Tip:
Type "opera:config" in the address bar to access advanced settings for this browser.
I'm currently working on increasing the display cache as it scrolling around shows too many squares...
I want to see if I can reduce that...

[Q] Xoom Browser

So far I'm really liking my Xoom but the browser keeps bugging me. Is there a way to change the theme of the browser? The dark browser is driving me crazy.
Also instead of going to a homepage is it possible to have a New Tab page like chrome has now?
I am noticing that some pages are not rendering very well. If you go to eBay's page some of the graphics and drop down arrows are blurry or grainy is the any fix for this?
I dont have it next to me, but you can always try switching it to a desktop version or something...
open a page, then in the address bar replace the web address with "About:debug" and hit enter (no quotes). Then hit the browser menu button, go to settings and the in the left menu choose debug. Click UA String and change it to desktop. Close the settings, retype the web address and hit enter and you should be viewing as a desktop browser. See if that helps at all.
Labs > Most Visited Homepage. That will make it show as chrome does. Some sites will have those minor issues, as they aren't optimized for mobile view.

Any chance for Text Reflow in stock browser?

I really....really hate for not be able to do text reflow in stock browser.
Many will say to install another browser like the boat, but if we have the air and smart features, they are for use in the browser.
Any chance of a mod be done to put the text reflow.
look ONE making text reflow at 2:300....very fast, arrrhhh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO6RizKf4AM
.
This would be my #1 requested feature too but seeing how Samsung hasn't put it in their stock browser and neither has Chrome to date, I'd say the chances are rather slim unfortunately. Opera and Dolphin might be good alternatives though.
I would love to get it too.
Mobile browser without a text reflow is totally useless IMO.
It's on the Note 2's stock browser, why would it not be in the S4?
Go in the browser options and enable it.
Menu > Settings > Advance > Auto-fit pages (Format Web Pages to fit the screen)
Also a default zoom option, using close is probably best for text reflow.

Thanks for the idea but it's not working... Double tap just zoom in but no text reflow.
I love the stock browser just because there are Quick/Pies controls, I don't understand why the others browsers doesn't have this...
But another important feature is Text flow. Is there a browser having both ?

[Q] Opera Mobile vs. Dolphin and Landscape

I think I've tried every browser that will install on a rooted NT. I'm down to Opera Mobile (and Classic Mobile--are they the same but from different markets??) and Dolphin.
I like Opera because I can zoom and save my aging eyes a bit. I hate Opera because I prefer to browse in landscape mode and I have yet to find a rotation locking app that will keep Opera steady. It flips and flops, back and forth at unexpected times. And, of course, there is no setting in Opera for orientation. Right now I'm using Tasker to invoke first Wi-Fi and then the Rotation Locker plugin. It works almost always on opening and sometimes stays...but not always.
Is there something that will ALWAYS keep Opera Mobile in landscape?
I like Dolphin (although I once discarded it) because it CAN be locked into landscape and will STAY there. I love that I can set the lower hardware buttons to Volume control and Dolphin will scroll with them. Flash is sort of amusing (hooray I got it working!), but it's not a good reason to stay with Dolphin. I hate Dolphin because it has no way to zoom--except that it does, but only on its own terms. It automatically zooms when you need to do something like a form entry. In the Settings panel the admonition to show the zoom buttons is ignored. You can assign a gesture to Zoom. It will reproduce it and confirm that your scribble on the screen is a "match", but it ignores all gestures as far as I can tell.
Have I missed something with Dolphin? Is there a way to zoom on a screen?
Have I missed another browser that is actually working as "well" as these two?
[SOLVED ZOOM!] OMG! Dolphin does respond to gestures if you're not an idiot like me. Tapping the "dolphin" button in the bottom left corner gives three options. The middle one goes to a blank screen on which to draw a gesture and after you have done so, it returns to the current browser tab with the effect done! So you can program a "Z" or something for "zoom" and it WORKS!!!!!!!!! (so do all the other gestures, if you can remember that many)
Hey,
How did you manage to install flash plugin for dolphin? I though it only works with android 2.3+

I've had good luck with "rotation locker". You have to long press the middle landscpe mode button (which on my nst has no text) to keep Opera running in the background. It then forces Opera back into the landscape mode despite disturbing events

I can't take credit for this (original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555549), but I may be able to smooth out the edges that this noob found a little intimidating.
1. Follow the link given in the post linked above to download the "flashupdate_signed.zip" file. Ignore the rest of the stuff there.
2. Unzip that file. You will need the three Flash plugin apks in the /system/app folder. They go on your SD card for installation later.
3. You can also copy the three .so files in the /system/lib folder to your SD card (or dropbox, or use ADB, etc.) These will need to be placed in the /system/lib folder of the Nook so you need Root Browser or similar with SuperUser rights.
4. When you have moved the three .so files to /system/lib on the Nook check that their permissions are the same as other files in that folder. Mine were not and I had to change the permissions to match the other files.
5. Reboot
6. Install the three Flash apks.
Note, this shows up as Flash 10.1 in my ADW Manager but when I go to test it seems to be 9.x. It works some places and not others, but I find that's true of older Flash plugins anyway.
Don't forget that you have to enable Flash in the Settings for Dolphin as well.
I have just installed "rotation locker" on my NST, and it works just fine with both Opera Mobile and my PDF readers. Thank you! I assess it through a long-press of my top-left Nook Button, and can switch back and forth between portrait and landscape modes at whim.

I didn't understand this at first but I was able to set Tasker to use this background option of Rotation Locker just for the few apps (like Opera Mobile and Crosswords(US) that resisted locking into landscape. Works like a charm! Thanks for the tip
