GPS Issues still...

When I made the switch to android one of the things I was most excited for was google maps and free turn-by-turn. I have tried everything to make this happen on my Fascinate. I upgraded to 2.2 and even tried the GPS Aids app. So my question to you guys is will the GPS ever work properly on this device or is there any other tricks I can try?

Uh. What issues are you even having? Although I do have some minor issues also. It connects perfect but every few minutes it drop GPS signal for about a minute and then picks it back upnot sure when this happened or how long or what version it started on as I barely ever use it.

I can never get a lock on my location, even after letting it sit for several minutes. It is always in the right area but off with a massive blue circle.

Did you go into setting>>loc&security and make sure both vzw and google location services box's are checked?
I did this and my GPS finds me immediately now (runninig froyo 2.2, sc 2.6 w/voodoo)

He's got at least VZW location services on due to the massive blue circle, which uses cellular triangulation. Wifi can get you a smaller circle, but doesn't work as well as GPS.
My phone has been totally unable to get a GPS lock for quite a while (since upgrading to EB01 based roms, but even on DI01 and DJ05 it was incredibly pathetic), even with updating the A-GPS data and having VZW & Google location services on.

I have tried all suggested issues. Do you think it is a hardware issue with my phone and I should trade it in or am I still missing something?

Sounds like you might have bad hardware. Since EB01 I just recently realized I didn't even need to have vzw or google locations checked. I get a lock just using stand alone service. 8/11 birdies locked in 18sec with an error of 13ft inside my house with GPS Status. And that was after a full wipe and rom flash.

Since EB01 happened I've had a near instant lock every single time.

I had the exact same prob. My gps problems have been completely intermittent, sometimes it would lock on and other times it would not. No matter what rom or radio I flash. But this is what seems to work pretty well.
1. Don't use the gps toggle button on the pulldown. Use the settings.
2. Use google maps v4.7 and don't let it update.

I've been using the option from the pull down menu with mixed results.
I've started going into the location & security and enabling/disabling gps from their with much much better results.

With SC 2.4 ROM GPS was working GREAT!!
I updated to SC 2.6 and I cannot get a lock at all.
With Wi-Fi on the best i can do is get my location and the directions. I can only guess that maybe the clock was changed / tweeked in the later versions.
When I get time I will be rolling back to SC 2.4 ROM.

I have determined it is not a hardware issue as someone else in my area is experiencing the same issues. I updated to EB01 and super clean 2.6. My lock is about 50% now. Either the service is great and locks right on or doesn't at all with the massive blue haze. Someone suggested going back to super clean 2.4?

this is the key. and one of the main reasons I went back to DL09 on my phone until the next build comes out.
if you turn it on in settings-->location&security it will work, and then you can turn it off/on via the notification bar for a while, until you reboot your phone...

Is it google navigation having the issue?
I continue to play around with this issue, and am noticing people talking about still being able to be picked up through GPS tools, but not get locked elsewhere. I am assuming that, like me, they are referring to google navigator giving the message "Searching for GPS". Oddly enough, Google latitude is accurately showing my location even when google navigator is telling me it is "Searching for GPS" and drops my turn by turn instructions. I saw one post from cableguy1 to use google maps 4.7 and disable updates, which I would be interested in trying. Anyone know where I can get v4.7?
*Never mind. Didn't pay attention to the fact that my Wifi was on, and the location was a couple houses off. It simply looked precise in comparison to the big blue circle I'd seen while driving. Sorry for the misinformation.*

SC2.4 doesn't have any locking issues for my wife. Good to go there, but not sure if we're just lucky.

After finding a couple other threads addressing GPS issues, I've noticed people with sc2.4 to have the least problems. Flashed the AIO Odin version, and have had an instant lock so far all morning. Very nice to have google navigaion back

GPS fix CM7 DHD

After endless searching for the gps solution i've found a solution.
I've tested it and can confirm it works.
All credits go to the developer of faster fix (Bernard Bekker)
So here are the steps:
1. Download the CM7 rom ( I'm currently running the built #15 nightly)

2. After installing the rom and gapps set it up as you normally would.
3. Download Fast Reboot from the market (and install it).
4. After installing the Fast Reboot, download Faster Fix from the market (and install it).
5. Now turn off the gps (not in the notification bar, but in settings).
menu/settings/location
6. Run Fast Reboot
7. Run Faster Fix, and select your country and hit Go
A pop up should say: for example "Done set to:nl.pool.ntp.org" as I live in the Netherlands.
8. Turn on your GPS and reboot.
Now when you use the Google Navigation you should have a fast and steady fix for your GPS.
This won't work if you turn off GPS and on again.
In this case you have to reboot your phone!!! Remember to turn on the GPS bevore you reboot your phone!
It is not nessesery to repeat steps 1 to 7, just 8.

Just tried this and got instant GPS lock when I walked outside of my office. THanks for posting this.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I just followed these instructions and when I rebooted the phone froze on the splash screen. Had to recover and flash my nand. Have you heard of this problem?

No, i never had this problem, mostly if you make a lot of changes, reboot in to recovery and flash a .zip and than reboot, you might end up with a bootloop in the splash screen.

Just to inform you guys, if you are using a gel case on your Desire HD, it's going to have a noticeable impact on the GPS lock time, from two minutes down to only several seconds.
I have confirmed this with my Case-Mate Gelli, and there is also a video by someone else on YouTube showing this.

Faster Fix will still help with the lock time in both cases, so thanks to the original poster.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I have an HTC Desire CDMA from USCC with CM7 RC4 running.

I still find the GPS to be very poor on my DHD. updated the radio, applied this fix and it still takes a long time to lock, even when outside. Its almost as if agps isn't working at all.

Just a thing to test
Menu>settings>applications>development
Make sure "Allow mock locations" isn't checked
I suffered with terrible GPS reception for weeks until I noticed this was checked. Now I get on average 3-7 yards accuracy, fixing in about 3 seconds

Also didnt work for me. Have flashed a few different Radios and ROM's, does anyone know a highly recommended Radio for CM7 and gps? (preferably on UK Orange if that matters / makes a difference to gps).

Worked well for me! Got an instant lock in my house after doing it. Used to take about 2 minutes outside. Cheers

This thread clearly says in the OP "not for CM." I don't know anything about RIL so maybe it will work, I just don't want to see someone have issues.

[Q] GPS is gone? I can click to turn on, but no symbol.

I have flashed to gingerbread and had gps just fine. I then flashed the radio to 1.08.00.056 and never re-checked gps for about two weeks. Tried turning gps on and while it clicks on and says it on in settings, nothing happens elsewhere. No satelite icon, no symbols near top of home screen, google maps acts like gps is on, but no satellite symbol ever comes up and gps never locks to anything.
I'm confused. I've tried switching gingerbread roms but they do the same thing as well, so I can only assume it's the radio. I tried finding the old radio to flash back to it in the forums, but the one link to a download I found doesn't show a checksum I can verify, and one other seems to have been taken over and flipped to a malicious website, according to my Avast anti-virus.
*Seems my kernel was causing the GPS to not work. Switched to a different kernel and now lock is extra fast, but still no icons showing when gps is sending and receiving data, but that's not such a big deal to me. Still like to be able to have it there though.

2 things you can do,first try to flash a theme that changes the status bar icons to see if that fixes it. Or sad to say you can run an Ruu and unroot,an Ruu will contain the older radio and should fix your problem.There is zip file in the dev section that you can flash from the bootloader. I'm nnot near my computer now but will edit this post with the link.

Whick ROM are you using?
There's a ROM which has GPS and USB Debug icons taken off on purpose..
I'm using mikshift G and it's one of those. Which it's kinda cool not having them all the time on your taskbar.

Thanks guys. Ill try downgrading the old radio first. Next I'll flash back to a froyo rom and see if I get a gps lock ( as I can't get it to lock again) and then as a last resort, I'll try going back to stock 100% and starting from scratch.
Be a few days before I can try. I'm out of town atm.

Alright. I've installed mikshift 1.1 froyo and now my GPS is back to working and locking just fine. I may just run this for a little while, but then go back to GB and see if the gps stays locked.

All right. Using Gingerbread shift deck 1.2t after getting gps lock on mikshift 1.1 and now I have my gps symbol back and gps is working great. In fact, everything on this build is working great that I can see, but I cant test 4G in my area and the wifi and cell signal bars are reading off lower than with mikshift. No idea if it's just set up different from froyo or if I'm actually getting a weaker signal. Seems like my reception hasn't degraded as far as dropped signal areas or clarity.

Now we have so many great Android ROMs for HD2. However, I have yet failed to find a ROM that has GPS working completely. Some RoM has GPS locking issue, other locks but freeze so many times. lets face it, we are driving, we are on the road, and we are lost, and the next thing you want is your GPS stop working on you in the middle, taking the phone out of the case, and pulling the batteries, and waiting for it to boot up again, probably by then most of us has left our destination about 10 miles away.
So in this thread, I want everyone to list the ROM that has the GPS working completely.

I have never had GPS issues with any of the Android ROMs I have used. Occasionally when using IGO8 I have had the phone reboot but this was only minor. See my sig for the ROM I am currently using without a problem. If you still experience issues then I suggest you try removing any additional programs you installed as they may be causing conflicts. You don't say what navigation program you use as this could also be a problem. In addition to using IGO for car navigation, I also use MM Tracker for hill walking so I always make sure that I fully test GPS on any build I use as I could end up lost on a mountain!

Try Typhoon ROM with the GPS fix .. without GPS fix it takes as long as 10 minutes but with the fix its as fast 15-30 second .. I've been using for over a month and haven't had any problem. Battery and Bluetooth is unbelievable. And I do agree that at this point if it freezes up its probably some apps that cause the problem .. not the ROM itself. G'luck!

[Q] Is there a Hardware or Software fix for weak GPS sensitivity?

The problem:I have an Evo 4G that is plagued with a weak GPS. For instance, in my sunroom (which is big windows on 3 of 4 sides) if I turn on GPS Status it will take forever to pick up any birds- and at most I'll get 2 or 3. My old G1 can sit right beside it and it will instantly pick up 7; the same goes for my wife's LG Optimus. This happens in the car, too- I can only even attempt to use nav if the phone is up in the windshield. From the passenger seat the signal is just too weak. I'll get 3-5 sats and inconsistent lock. If I hold it up in the windshield it jumps up to 7 or 8 sats and a much better lock.
Things I've tried:
GPS Status - reset AGPS data (not much difference)
FasterFix - ditto
GPS Time (to sync my time with the NTP) - helped slightly but not much
GPS Doctor - made it start seeing birds slightly quicker, but still wouldn't see as many as it should or lock very well
GPSFix - seems to slightly help hold a lock, but it still is not good
TrackerBoost - Same as above.
Played with gps.conf settings- couldn't really get any big changes so went back to stock file.
EDIT: Forgot to mention I have done ##GPSCLRX# many times- it helps for a little while
EDIT: Also forgot to mention I have tried alternate GPS drivers... Kingdom, Vision, etc.
My Phone Details:
Evo 4G w/MikG 2.45 (FWIW, the GPS problem was present on Jiminy (froyo-sense)
PRI: 1.77_003
Baseband: 2.15.00.05.02
I'm fairly sure at this point that it is a hardware problem (but no warranty), but I was wondering if anybody has had luck with a certain Radio Baseband version when dealing with this sort of thing? Or is there a GPS antenna mod to boost sensitivity a bit?
Also, if I try a new radio, do I have to change PRI as well? Or can I just flash a new radio from recovery?
cliffnotes: My GPS sensitivity sucks compared to my wife's phone. Any way to improve it?

Yes, sorry I forgot to list it. FWIW I have always run Sense ROMs (what can I say... I like SenseUI!)

I'm currently running the Vision driver, but I've tried the Kingdom & the OTA ones. The Vision seemed the best; the OTA GB Evo one was horrible.
This morning I did that latest radio update and it seems to have helped ever so slightly- nav tracked a lot better on the way to a job today. Still nowhere near as good as my old G1 or my wife's LG, but at least it was mostly usable.
