Captivate Screen is Brighter - Vibrant General

The Captivates Screen is Much brighter and Vibrant, than our Vibrants...WTH and they have voodoo color and everything we have...
So why is their screens brighter?

I just checked against my neighbor's couldn't see any difference. If you use the codes you can look at the highest brightness setting for the display maybe yours set below 100%

I'm actually using a captivate and I have my vibrant beside me. Both are stock 2.2 and actually, my vibrant is brighter. The captivate looks yesllowish while the vibrant is white and has a more crisp and clear look, especially the 4 touch buttons on bottom.

Is the captivate you're comparing your vibrant to newer?

Captivates capacitive lights (from the 3 my friends have) are MUCH dimmer than vibrants

Super Amoled, and all Amoled screen for that matter are not as consistent as LCD screen. For example, some screens display a blue tint, other brown, others red when at low brightness. Yes, it is partly due to color balance issues with the software, but amoled screens are organic particles which will inevitably vary.

The backlights suk on the cappy, i have one that i dont use but its on stock 2.1 and the screen is just brighter on it like?...and my friends cappy with voodop color is brighter with our brightnesses set to the max...i was like wtf?!?!

screen discrepancies amongst three epics

so i have three epics in front of me, all on stock roms, all with brightness as low as possible, BandB brightness control widget shows all of them at 9% which is the lowest i can set them too, two have a yellow tinge to their whites, whereas mine is pure white... theirs appear to be dimmer and at max brightness its tough to distinguish any variances... im not sure if i should be happy or sad that their lower brightness would appear to give them better battery life

Mine is yellowish. Disappointingly-so,
Mine is pure white, on all low and all high.

Same here, no screen problems.
Mines has the slight yellowtint

There seems to be some variance in screen color temperature. I was at the sprint store a few weeks ago and the display Epics all had cooler color temperatures and my phone was warmer.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
The power savings mode settings changes the screen color on mine from a whiteish color to a greyish color. Also, my epic has an EXTREME blue tint when you are looking at it at any angle other than straight on. I have looked at a dozen other epic 4gs and none even approach how blue mine gets when looked at sideways.
I've also got 2 Epics, one with a yellowish tint which looks dull compared to the other at the low settings.
I noticed that between the lowest setting and going just slightly up a notch, the yellowish one has a lot of brightness difference, while the white one has very little difference in brightness.
Did anyone notice a difference in battery life? My white screen one is stuck at DG17 and the yellowish one is on DI18, so I don't think I can do a fair comparison.
I'm still within my 30 days, so I'm not sure whether to trade the yellowish one for a new one or stick with it..

Quality of the G2's screen?

Quick question about the screen of the G2 / Desire S compared to the super amoled of the Galaxy S? I have the I9000 and I pretty amazed of the quality of the blacks... How is it with the G2's super LCD?

Looks better then AMOLED on my nexus IMO. Very clear and bright and not too bad in direct sunlight. I Haven't really played with the S-AMOLED because I hate Samsung phones.
The colors of the vibrant to me were more....well...vibrant I guess, especially the blacks which were really deep.
The G2 has a superb screen, very bright and cheerful. I like it.
Well the insanely deep black levels on the vibrant are because of properties of the SAMOLED. Black pixels are actually shut off on that screen. The G2 has a regular old (super) TFT-LCD. It has a higher pixel density than the vibrant since both have the same resolution but the G2 screen is lightly smaller. It has a very slight yellowish tint to it, but you only really notice it if you compare it against a more white screen, like say, my G1. Other then that it's a great screen and it's very readable in sunlight IMO.
That would explain why the clash between colors on the vibrant was more pronounced.
Also, choice of wallpaper on the phone tends to help too.

I prefer the G2's screen to any AMOLED screen I've yet seen. The colors look far more natural than the garish colors of the AMOLED. Having said that, the blacks on the G2 are a very, very dark blue like on any LCD, but that's only noticeable if you're watching a movie or playing a game in the dark. In normal light or even dim light the blacks will be black.
The Nexus One had awesome contrast and looked great indoors. It makes you wish for big AMOLED TV sitting in your living room, but the N1's screen wasn't that great in the sun. The G2 is readable in full sunlight. To me, this feature is more important.
Yes I agree with the previous post about the pixel density. You can easily see the individual pixels on galaxy phones. It makes text look not so sharp. Also many of the galaxy s led screen Ive seen(work at a wal-mart cellphone kiosk) are tinted blue. White is always a light blue.
I prefer the G2 screen in the end.
super amoled on my vibrant looks way better than the g2 both in doors and out. No comparison. I also thing my g2 screen looks way better than my nexus one screen too. Both in doors and out. I personally don't like how over saturated colors look on the n1. Outdoors the g2 bests the n1 by a long shot.

Screen marks only noticeable on low brightness dark screen

I have a relatively new (1w) sgs3 and have notice that in the dark room when screen has a darkish grey too off-black background solid colour (even on the stock notification background) and with tge brightness on lowest setting, then there many blob marks in the screen.
I ran a pixel checker which is fine but this appears like a defect in the glass itself. I'm not using a screen protector yet.
Can anyone else notice these blobs, some of which are as big as 3-4mm diameters?

Its completely normal on Super Amoled screens. I have them but it doesn't bother me since it only occurs on black screens. FYI, there was already a lot of topics about this already...

Haven't seen it on the SIII, but on the SII I have, this would happen with screen filter on lower brightness. I think that it has something to do with the level at which the pixels fire optimally. If they are under fed, essentially, the inherent flaws in the screen matrix (as in any manufactured item) become visible where they otherwise wouldn't.
I know this has been beaten to death, but it varies from phone to phone. My i9300 had a lot of blobs. My second one only really has one noticeable one. My i747 is almost perfect. It has little dots, but they are spread out and pretty much near the border of the screen. I wish it would have been the other way around...
please search before posting this topic has been discussed in great detail in another thread.
common on super amoled hd panels.
Same issue too. Checked with Samsung and they said it's common for the screen. Only occurs in black pictures low back light and dark room and it doesn't bother me

Why colors are not vivid in this screen

Why colors are not vivid in this screen they look a little wached out
What u guys think?
They don't appear as oversaturated as the ipad 3/4 or OLED screens but it looks so bright that it makes up for it. I know the actual nit ratings are not the highest but this thing looks BRIGHT on the auto setting.
With the brightness all the way up it seems washed out. Just turn the brightness down. It's overkill for the most part, and seriously cuts down the battery life. Compared to my galaxy nexus, the blacks aren't nearly as good, but I'd say the color is more natural. Cheers.
When more kernels are released i'm sure there will be color controls. I'm personally waiting for franco kernel. He just posted on his google+ inquirying about releasing a test version of his kernel. should not be too long until we have the ability to change gamma and color density patience!

Thats cause this uses an actual LCD screen, unlike the Galaxy nexus. Honestly the blacks are one of the only decent things about the GNex screen. Custom kernels had to fix some major color issues with most people's devices. And as the person above me said, we will soon have kernels for this device too that allow color, contrast, and gamma options so anyone who is unsatisfied with colors at default can tweak their settings around.

I second this. Stock colors on the gnex make it look like a cigar stain. Think I stole that line from somewhere. Anyway they are bad. I've tweaked the colors on my gnex and now the diff between the two devices is less. I personally like oled, but the n10 screen IMHO is far more color accurate which may at times make it seem washed out.
Its kind of like too much bass. An untrained ear might say too much bass sounds better then a flat curve.

The colours are fine.. Its the colours on your oled screens that are overly saturated
I have to agree with the OP. Blacks are really bad. Also is everyone else screen on the warmer side (slightly yellow)?

The screen produces a very poor rendition of the NTSC colour gamut. I have professionally calibrated equipment at home to compare. Gray scale is good. Gamma is OK. Color accuracy is poor. Very antique looking. This is similar to how Panasonic used to calibrate their displays. The contrast is average. Overall the screen is simply mediocre with minimal glaring issues. This screen isn't for showing off; its for getting work done. Bright, sharp, and bland looking. Hopefully a dev unlocks some mdnie hacks that offer control over the displays calibration. A couple tweaks could definitely improve the perceived contrast and improve color accuracy. I've had a number of nexus devices over the years. They're very no frills. So I don't think we'll see many tools for improving the screen. Maybe some wonky color gamma tweaks.
Supercurio I'm calling you out for some assistance.

BTW I have a galaxy nexus with an amoled display. With some adjustments its a superb screen. The gamma is too high and colours are over saturated, however the colour rendition is far more accurate than the nexus 10. The blues and reds on the nexus 10 are way off the mark. Blues are more cyan, they are washed out, not deep enough. The reds are very under saturated. The greens are muddy, slightly brown. Yellows are over saturated and magenta is slightly under saturated. The display just doesn't compare to the new iPad in the slightest. Oddly enough, sharpness is the least important display characteristic for a quality display. Humans are much more sensitive to contrast and colour. The nexus 10 display has its priorities mixed up. On the other hand, I still love this thing and wouldn't trade it for any other tablet on the market. Its graphics performance is beastly and just outclasses most other tablets in regards to build quality.

There's an app called Screen Adjuster to adjust rgb and contrast. Root required. I wonder if that may help. I'm not rooted so I can't really try it. And I may end up returning it so didn't wanna muck with it for now.

Calling the ipad 4 oversaturated is just ignorant.
Not sure if its placebo but I updated to 4.2.1 and my build # is JOP40D and the screen isnt as dull anymore. Blacks are darker although still not as dark as my tf700. Anyone else notice this after the update?

How's the screen for everyone?

Everyone who's owned a SIII knows the screen is completly useless when it comes to the sun being shined at it. Cannot see anything. What about the S4? Same issue? Just curious about to buy one
Also how's the screen for you all? =)

I haven't found it too bad, I have found the auto brightness to adjust really well. It hasn't been too sunny here though

I don't have an S4 yet but a report by displaymate a couple of days ago showed that when you have auto brightness turned on the AMOLED screen is just as bright as the brightest LCDs out there (around 475 nits). Of course you can't set this amount of brightness manually since you would overheat your phone and cause screen burn in if you did. That is why Samsung only allows this for when you have on auto brightness. Since as soon as you go back indoors it will lower the brightness back down.
Long time S3 user (launch) and just picked up the S4 yesterday. The screen, in terms of quality, offers a noticeable improvement over the S3. I migrated everything over from one phone to the other and there's no mistaking which is which. The total difference, however, is less than the difference we saw going in the S2->S3 IMO.
In bright light, unfortunately, they're basically the same as far as I can tell. The auto-brightness setting seems more conservative on the S4 (possibly to help with thermal issues), but I haven't had a chance to crank it up all the way out in the sun.
If screen brightness matters a lot to you, I urge you to take a look at the EVO. The LCD screen on that is much improved, extremely bright as usually, and the blacks are getting considerably blacker (see anantech review). I myself played with it for a half hour but quickly jumped back on the S4 since it fits me better.
I've owned every galaxy phone since the galaxy epic. (Sprint qwerty phone) AMOLED screens are great despite no anti glare features.

Screen is great until your moving grey on a black background and then you have weird purple smears going on. Not sure if it's a faulty display or just 'how it's meant to be'
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
The screen is stunning! Extremely sharp with smooth text and eye popping colours, its basically like Apple's Retina display on iP5 but with AMOLED benefits on top.
In sunlight it fares well from my experience, better than S3, IMO, its a lot less reflective.
Stunning!
6 Stars.
