So on Saturday morning, I woke up to find my that Shift on CM7 stable didn't have a 3g logo and that it had no signal. I checked the battery usage and it said cell standby used 87 percent of the battery, the time without a signal was 100%, and that the phone had only been off the charger for 2 hours (it was more like 18 hours in reality). I attempted to reboot the phone to fix the issue and I got a boot loop. So I booted into hboot which loaded fine, but when i tried booting into recovery, the phone started boot looping again.
I *fixed* the phone by using the pc61img.zip file I found in the development section, which worked in restoring the stock hboot, but didn't fix the boot loop for recovery or android. It just allowed me to take it back to Sprint and get it replaced.
I have no idea what caused the issue, but I was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue or if it was something I had done wrong. I hadn't messed with cm7 since I flashed it on release day and the only tinkering I did was add the steel blue theme and x99kernel. None of which were done within a week of the issue.
Anyone have any ideas or similar problems?
Had that happen on a rom on my buddies my touch 3g 1.2 - had to do the same thing you did. Before restoring the stock spl, I tried fast boot flashing a new recovery, boot image, system image, everything. With no luck.

In the same boat with my Evo Shift.
From the bootloader how do I flash a working Stock Kernal?
You could use flash boot to try and erase everything and reflash clockwork manually

This is also an issue on the evo, but they have been unable to get s off

I was adding a new custom ROM to my Droid 2 because I wasn't happy with the Epic ROM so I went with the VZW 2.4.5 Clean ROM, I wanted to add the kangerade blue theme to it but accidently installed the wrong version of it over my ROM and now my phone is in a constant boot loop. sometimes it stays at the droid eye for a while and then load into the lock screen but will go right back into the boot sequence.
When it does boot into the lock screen there is not enough time for me to get into the bootstrapper app to boot into recovery mode.
are there any other ways to get into recovery mode? I've searched high and low on this forum and others as well.
I want my droid back =[
Have you tried to pull the battery and then put it back in. Everytime I do that, I end up at recovery thing.
yup, i've pull the battery many times. i've got it into the android recovery screen but when I to the data/cache format it just brings me to the green android starting screen and goes back into the boot loop, what's weird is that the theme is still applied to the phone

Hmmm. Kind of a roundabout process, but did you make a backup. I'd just restore it to a backup and then go from there.
i can't get into the clockwork recovery, just the stock android recovery. are there any backdoors that i could use with adb?
Try taking the battery out during the boot animation a few times, if that doesn't get you to clockwork recovery you've probably lost your recovery. I've noticed that I sometimes (or always?) Lose clockwork when installing a Rom. If that is the case you may have to sbf unless you can get adb to work from the lockscreen.

how would I go about doing an sbf? could you point me in the right direction?
On this forum three posts down is a guide. Follow the guide exactly, except you will have to put your phone in bootloader mode since it will not turn on and stay on. Do do this, hold the up button on the dpad when you turn it on.
It works, i just did it yesterday. First time ive ever had to flash SBF, and i did ALOT of roms and modding on my D1. The bootstrap is nice but not as nice as a full bootloader.

cool. i think i found the guide. it says backup my sd card to my computer..this doesn't delete everything on the sd card does it?
(not a huge concern since having a working phone is better than losing all my stuff on my memory card)
okay. I tried doing what the tutorial said and I got an error on my bootloader that says
"Critical Error: DEA1"
EDIT:
Well it looks like it was just a simple "I need to update my rsd lite program"
I was using the 4.5 and I read that 4.9 was out so I gave updating RSDLITE a shot and boom, the phone is reflashing as we speak
My sd card is intact... untouched from what I can tell. I had no apps2sd though (with 8 gigs on board why would I?)

I'm rooted, unrevoked; I'm currently stuck in a boot loop. I can not reach recovery. I can not get to my rom. I can only access bootloader.
So far I have taken these steps to cure my problem:
Ran RUU software in Windows (with and without sd card in evo)
Flashed RUU as PC36IMG in bootloader
Cleared Storage using fastboot in command prompt
Cleared Recovery and then Flashed Amon Ra's Recovery and Clockwork using fastboot in command prompt
Flashed Amon Ra's Recovery and Clockwork as PC36IMG in hboot
Flashed Sprint Lover's as PC36IMG in hboot
Flashed eng-PC36IMG from Toastctfh's Old Root Tutorial as PC36IMG in hboot
Each of these methods flashed successfully as far as I can tell... yet I still go into an infinite boot loop.
Before the bootloop this is what I was doing:
I had the initial CM7 nightly installed for about 2 weeks. It was buggy, and a few days ago restarted and deleted all my texts, and desynced from google. On rebooting, google apps acted as if I had never ran the phone before - it asked me to enter google account info, etc, upon reboot.
I decided CM7 was too unstable and so I wiped data and davlik, and flashed CM6. When CM6 booted google apps was already on, before I had even flashed it! Anyways I figured I wanted to give MIUI a run, so I wiped data and davlik, and flashed MIUI. It ran fine for about two hours, and then rebooted out of nowhere... and never came out of the boot loop.
I'm really starting to sweat this as I have gone three days now without a phone. Does anyone have any ideas that may help me? Thanks.
If I am unable to get out of my boot loop, does anyone know if I would be able to unroot my phone and then take it into Sprint and get another?
Are you able to boot into recovery?

bump to this as I am also experiencing this same situation. Phone stuck in an infinite bootloop to the white htc screen then all over again. can get into bootloader but not into recovery.
tried all the above. this was out of nowhere.
This problem is all over the Evo section, especially in Q&A and I don't think I've seen anyone come out of it.
On the positive side, I also don't think I've seen anyone take theirs back to Sprint and have a tech even check to see if their phone was rooted or not, and btw, next time you flash a new ROM, not saying this is the cause, wipe EVERYTHING, not just cache and dalvik-cache
Having the same problem here also...
didi you try the clear storage mode in the boot loader cause if you already flashed the PC36IMGyou wouldnt have a custom recovery just the triangle screen i recomend doing it with the original 2.1 zip file then just re rooting it put the rom then flash radio and g apps

The OP's list of attempted fixes looks like he ran the gamut.
Unless there's a fix that I haven't read about, it's time for a trip to the Sprint store....
I have someone working on mine that claims he can get it fixed...has access to things I don't. We will see. I will report the results.
Ok...He did it and its up and running. I was trying to flash mine to Boost Mobile so thats how i got mine into a boot loop but he got mine out of it with this...Download the

Try to use the pd15xxxwhatever .img in the hboot
since you used gfree your s will still be off.

I too am having this issue and it really is pissing me off, I was s-off on the eng bootloader .85 and used the gfree method. I was on gorillas rom cwm 2....and decided to use the thunderbolt rom using cwm 3.06. I may have been on it for 5 minutes then my phone just turned off and went into boot loops. When i went into cwm I got an error on mounting. I then downloaded the PD15IMG zip and when I hit volume up to update it fails on the first one showing bootloader fail, so im stuck not being able to do anything.

Main issue with me was that my sd card got erased somehow and that part7backup file deleted and I have no way in gettin it back cause my computer got wiped while gettin repaired,so I just called tmobile and they snt me a replacement,i just got tired of tryin to fix it,i should of stayed on iced glacier lol...
Tried using that pd15 in hboot reconizes the file but then says update fail, cant do nothing after that..my sd card erased somehow and computer got wiped while gettin repaired..
Well you said you backed up with 2.x.x then flashed with 3.0.0.5? Why didn't you just flash cwm 3.0.0.6? And on the off chance that its the actual recovery you could push a new recovery via adb

OK heres the deal. I have done tons of searching and it looks like I SHOULD be able to get out of this, but I cant figure it out and I may have gone to far(by unrooting with 4.24 and bootloader 2.16).
So long story short, my launch day evo got lost about a month after I got it. Got a replacement from Sprint(or whoever their insurance is), my original Evo got found about a month or so after that. It has not been powered on since then(a year realistically) with no battery or SD card in it. I got bored and decided to power it up and update everything(because I cant do **** with my new Evo3d, yet since im on a Mac and have no access to a PC). Here are where things went bad.
Phone was rooted with the very original Toast method including S-off with the .76 Eng boot loader. I was running some form of CM6 on it when I lost it.
-Went to power it up and it boot looped at the white Evo4g screen.
-Went into bootloader and tried to get into recovery(had Amon RA 1.7 I think). No go.
-Flashed the new TWRP recovery and got into recovery just fine.
-Flashed the CM7.1.0-RC1
-reboot into a boot loop
-battery pull and a reboot and it loaded, but after about 30 seconds, reboot into a boot loop.
-Thought maybe TWRP didnt like the phone so I flashed Amon RA 2.3
-went into recovery just fine. Did complete wipes of everything using Calkulin Wipe all.zip
-re-flashed CM7.1.0 RC1
-boot loop
-flashed latest radios
-rebooted back into recovery
-reflashed cm7.1.0 rc1
-boot loop
During all of the reboots I would occasionally get the CM7 splash screen and then a reboot into boot loops. I THINK everything was flashing ok.
At this point I was frustrated and was thinking it was something I was doing that was jacked up so I decided to unroot and I flashed the newest RUU(which obviously removes root, S-off, .76 boot loader, etc...) so I did it. Figured I was just trying to get the phone running to sell anyway. Flashed was successful, chose to reboot and guess what. Boot loop. I pulled the battery out for about 10 minutes and it boots into the rom, runs for about 10-15 seconds in the rom and then reboots, back into the rom at least, but only about 10-15 seconds later, another reboot.
Every thread I read on these infinite boot loops were guys saying they couldnt even get into recovery or flash anything, which I had no problem doing(obviously cant really do that anymore with losing root and s-off). So I am stuck.
So current state of the phone is boot loader 2.16 S-on with 4.24.651.1 with all current radios, etc... flashed(as far as I can tell) from the RUU posted on Goo-inside.me.
Does anybody have any ideas for me to try? It seems like I am so close to getting it running because it will run for about 60 seconds but then reboot. I am guessing a hardware issue, but I honestly at this point have no clue.
Sounds like a hardware issue to me.

Thats what I am leaning towards, but why, if a hardware issue, will the phone run in the boot loader or recovery for basically forever without rebooting? It will also successfully(or did) flash everything I asked it to. I would think it would always reboot around that 60 second time frame if it was a hardware issue.
damn, too bad you ran RUU & lost s-off. now you couldn't do anything to test/troubleshoot even if you wanted to.

because in the boot loader and recovery menu I'm sure the phone is not accessing radios, audio components, gps, and all manner of other hardware components that get activated once the phone tries to boot up for real.
It sounds like according to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805612&page=4
That my NV is FUBAR, but since I ran RUU and lost S-off, I cant do the fix. Oh well, I am sure eventually somebody will crack the boot loader and then I can fix it. Otherwise I have to send it off to HTC and I am sure pay them to fix it.
Just to clarify. The thread you linked to is for people who wrote nv items to their device.
What I'm afraid you are experiencing is the bootloop commonly complained about by those running CM roms.
I have yet to find a solution to the CM bootloop and all signs point to hardware failure.

Just picked the phone up yesterday. Not new to the mt4g but they said it was a software issue so I was like hell that's an easy fix. Got it to flash the pd5img but still has a amber light that blinks 7 times then tries to boot but it loops at the mt4g splash screen. Anyone know a fix for this? Can boot into the boot loader but can't do much cause the battery won't charge. Prolly need a new battery but if anyone knows how to force charge let me know.
edit: tried charging the phone by blocking off the middle two contacts on the battery. that got the orange light to stop blinking and i managed to get the pdimg to install again but still loops... it installed everything fine it skipped one of the tp's but the other one did its thing. guy i got the phone from said it wouldn't start up for him it was a software problem he assumed and put it in a drawer for like 3 months so the battery is completely drained. gonna keep the other two pins on the battery blocked for 30 minutes or so to see if it will boot. fast boot kept throwing me a error about the battery not having enough voltage to install the pd15img.zip update so battery might be toast not sure will keep everyone posted. any ideas just throw them my way
Edit: OK got the battery to charge and no voltage errors in hboot anymore but can't boot to recovery or factory reset the device. Is hboot screwed? If so how would I flash another without being able to use they phone?

no errors flashing the emmc chip i would guess is good still because it flashed. I've already read the q&a sticky about this stuff and nothing is helpful. phone is stock as far as i know. before i flashed the pd15img i looked at the radio it was the same one from the zip and the phone still had s-on i got it from some guy that looks like he wouldn't root or anything since he had an iPhone... and like i said hoot said s-on and had the latest radio so i would assume everything was stock. might be the battery but i won't charge every time i connect the phone to the charger it tries to boot and ends up looping at the mt4g splash screen. ill try another battery tomorrow when i get a chance to swap it from my brothers girlfriends phone. but I'm working a 24 hour shift today so i have plenty of time to mess around with this phone so i figured i would
ok i can get into fast boot but can't do much since i have s-on but if anybody has an idea please let me know id like to come back to the mt4g
To save yourself the time, you could try HTCDev unlocking it and installing recovery by fastboot, since the warranty on the phone is long gone anyway. This might allow you to try flashing ROMs from recovery. Don't forget to flash boot.img from fastboot though!
If this route brings your phone alive, you can try to relock and S-OFF the thing, to have normal flashing access from recovery.
