Just ordered my first streak, will be here tomorrow, its an unlocked version, i use at&t. Im assuming since its new its going to be a newer version? maybe 351 but i will have to check when its here. A few things i want to root but whats the highest version oneclick is know to work on? Also i read this thread about a 2.2 performance tweak and wish there was something for the newer versions...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848487
Any tips or places i can look for some nice custom roms or tweaks??
Thanks
There is only one person cooking ROMs. That is Steve. Or DJ Steve, he is going a great job too.
Have a look at this thread for the latest ROM. It is already tweeked and rooted.
Have a look around you will find what you need.
Well come the the Streak Club.

Thanks thats what i thought as i found out he was the one over at MoDaCo that had a honeycomb port and was maybe working on a 2.3 version. Was there supposed to me a link in your post?

Read the last sentence in the first paragraph:
This specific exploit may work on various Froyo and Honeycomb versions as well.
Ah gotcha my bad didnt really look into that second link much...
I have a stock 347 on my unlocked streak ($200 recent deal), and I really didn't like 351. I went back to 347 now since I don't use dell stage anyways. So if I were you, unless you want to use dell stage home screen, I wouldn't try to upgrade to 351. I use Launcher Pro homescreen by the way.
Rooting is good because there are some apps that needs root permission. If you want to go with Superclick, v1.6 worked for me on 347. First, run superclick select rollthecageexploit, and click root. Next, have debug mode enabled on streak. Then power off streak, and connect USB. Then power on, and superclick will detect the device and start rooting.
Obviously, GingerBreak 1.10 is the easiest way to root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049627
looks like i have 347, 00
ok well i tried gingerbreak 1.2 and it rebooted so i figured it worked and tried a few things and it said i didnt have root permissions, when i tried to remove some of the dell apps i couldnt?
I tried oneclick 1.7 on my vista laptop and get hung up at waiting for device everytime even when i run as admin?
So what now

Just a few things to know make sure you have a backup. Get a app called root uninstaller from the market its free it will list all your apps and then you can delete the ones you dont want BUT make a backup in case you delete something important.

I need to take my Hero back to factory specs because I'm taking it into a sprint store tomorrow. What all do I need to do... should I just flash my original rom back on there or can I download a rom from htc and it will clear everything? I understand I need to flash a new recovery image too.
Thanks

You can flash the original rom back on there and be fine. They wont EVER press Home+power and boot into recovery.
If you really want to go back to default.. Run this RUU

after you run this can you re-root?. im new to android and i want to be able to restore to factory settings whenever after root just so i can re-root and practice it, as well as know how to fix it if i do something stupid or just brick the darn thing.
like i said im new and not good with forums where can i get a copy of the original rom? i would like to have that before i attempt to root.
also kinda off topic but do i have to be rooted to make nanoid backup. i would also like to have that before i root.

Yes you can re-root after running the .5 RUU
the original rom is contained in the RUU program linked above
You don't have to be rooted to make a nandroid backup, though you do need to flash a custom recovery image. Being rooted means that you basically have administrator access on your phone, can run things like wifi tether and can overwrite the /system/ folder. A recovery image is a little different than that...
ok thanks, i know root is just admin, but a lot of root guides have you flash a recovery image, by doing that you replace the original recovery image? the one that takes you back to factory reset? thats what im not sure about and im really nervous about changing that and messing it up and bricking my device, thought one forum said its almost imposable to brick.
ok so i have that RUU and another one i download. do i just run it or do i need to have a specific program on my pc?
i know i need to Google it and just search the forums but i don't have a lot of time on my hands right now.
If you're planning on going back to root, don't run the .6 RUU. I don't think it's rootable. At least that was the case when it came out. .5 IS rootable.

If it is .6, who cares. You can get root by going to the development section and finding the root guide written by regaw_leinad, and the solution for software number .6 is in there, too. Dunno why people make it out to be such a bad thing to have .6... seriously.

Exactly. .6 isn't rootable yet but you are losing nothing by flashing back to .5 except for the patch they released to fix root exploit. What a waste of time for them.

But thats after you run the RUU.exe I meant how do you know what version of the RUU.exe coincides with what version of the software with out installing or running it. I am still a little confused on what I need to do with the RUU.exe and or what it dose. I have been searching the forums but there is not a Good sticky or wiki about it, its only the definition. I am assuming it re-installs a fresh copy of whatever that version of the OS is, but i don't know for sure.

sorry I am such a noob and thanks for the help but i just want to clarify that .6 stands for 1.6 or donut?
-Thanks for helping the noob!!!
2.27.651.5 is the original Hero update.
2.27.651.6 is the update that was released solely to disable the ability to root.
The RUU for each was released by Sprint/HTC and flashed your phone from 1.5 to 2.whatever.
If you root, then you can run any of these to revert back to the stock Sprint image. If you chose to go to 2.27.651.6 then the only way to re-root would be to flash back to 2.27.651.5 which would only be a pain in the bum.
Since 2.27.651.6 gives you nothing but the inability to root then it only makes sense to revert to .5.
If this makes no sense to you...feel free to give up on rooting altogether. If it does then good luck.
BTW I only figured out how to root on Monday so these forums are most excellent..if you take the time to search through them.
Thanks its starting to make sense, right now I'm software 2.1 update 1 or 2.6 so i just have to go back to 2.5 . once i have more time i will thanks for the explanation! yes this site is the best and yes i need to search more.
I had a stock 2.1 Epic rooted with Z4. Manually upgraded to 2.21 effortlessly, all works well.
Tried rerooting with Z4 multiple times and it would not work. I removed Z4 from my Epic.
How can I reroot? The good news it Titanium is still freezing the apps I previously had frozen. However, I have no way to add freeze or unfreeze.
Thanks,
Todd
If z4root don't work just use the one click root with clock work. Its easy and straight forward

If your going to flash a froyo rom, there are no kernels yet. If your going to start on a 2.1 rom then thee are a few god ones around like the phoenix kernel, the extreme kernel and numerous others that allow over clocking and under clocking. Check the epic development threads for the 2.1 roms and they have the links to kernels there.

SuperOneClick you get from XDA, just search. Its not in the market because it runs on your computer, not on the phone. Universal Androot is in the market, but I think if you have a stock ATT ROM many apps are blocked so you wont even find them. That is a whole different problem...

Yeah that must be the case. I have searched the Market for Universal Androot and I can't find it. So as you said, it's probably blocked by Rogers Stock Rom.
One thing I know for sure is I want to root my phone. So if I can't do it through Universal Androot I guess I have to go with SuperOneClick.
I'll keep searching for a solution. There's gotta be a way I can get Universal Androot on my phone.

You're welcome. Here's the link that will get it done. One thing though, there is no back-up rom for our build. So if you do it you won't be able to go back to the Rogers 1.6 build. So no warranty if something happens.

It appears that a few Droid X owners have successfully used this exploit, according to some of the responses in the link you provided. I'll be interested to see if this will work on the final Ginberbread OTA (keeping fingers crossed)!
I just tried it and it works. No problems arose.
That's definitely good news if the OTA comes out and it's got important tweaks that .588 doesn't have.

As long as you don't use it there will not be any problems
Just SBF'd to .340 and used the official update to .588, GingerBreak worked fine except I'm having issues getting Titanium Backup to recognize it has root. I get the prompt to allow it, but the app still says it doesn't have it. Other root apps, like adfree and autokiller memory work just fine. Hmf.
Scratch that. Just went back into TB, updated busybox and it's right as rain. Two thumbs up!
Works great for my DX, however, I need to un-root it and I've tried several ways from other forums and I am not having any luck.
Does anyone know the procedure to un-root for GingerBreak?
Edit: I don't have Gingerbread installed either, I'm just running 2.2.1 - I don't know if this makes a difference when trying to un-root this. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. I've been scouring trying to find a solution and I've had no luck yet. I've tried rooting then unrooting when the one-click program and that isn't helping me either. Any suggestions??
I don't know if this can be answered but it doesn't hurt to ask. How come the ota cannot be rooted but the P3droid version of GB can be rooted? If its the same thing then what is the difference on why it cant be rooted?
Just going to guess here (this is speculation not fact) but I would assume that p3 being as skilled as he is was able to reopen the exploits used to root that motor/verizon closed in the ota.

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.
