[Q] Memory Issue - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

So I have a 2gb card in my HD2 right now while running live and according to my sync with my computer, i have .16 gigs left on it.
Isn't there memory onboard the HD2? I know that WP7 uses the memory from the card, but i would at least think it would use some of the memory from the HD2. Do I need to go buy a larger card? I mean I hate to spend $20 on a card if I don't need to. Right now im at the point where I cannot even transfer a photo.

WP7 in it's present incarnation only recognizes and uses 512MB of the the HD2's 1GB so you need a larger SD card if you have one. What happened to your factory SD that came with the HD2...I believe it was a 4GB microSD?

I got this phone for free, so im using an old sd card i had laying around. im gonna probably just go to radio shack while they are having this sale to get the 16g scan disk.

Here is a question. In my sync, it says the capacity on my card is .16g, I had android on there before. Is android still on there? If so, is there a way to remove it? i want to make sure i am getting all the memory out of my card

WP7 installation is supposed to reformat your SD card. In Zune, under view settings or one of the lists of what you can you do with your phone, there is a way to view how much memory you have to play with and also be able to re-allocate memory for specific uses. Check it out.

I cant use zune since i have an Apple iMac. Im using the windows phone 7 connector software off the windows site. It supposedly is the zune version for mac. I just find it hard to believe that ONLY the rom is taking up 2gb of space.

OK, very interesting senerio here. I took out SD card and booted up the phone. The phone actually loaded into windows just fine. Not only that, my wifi was detected. But with the SD card in, no wifi. My SD card must not work

yeah that is correct, your SD card hasnt been recognised at the initial setup, you need to try one of two things, try formatting the card in a digital camera (to be honest even this isnt a great idea) or two, you need a new SD card
SD cards even within the same brands and models may or may not work, some will not install at all, others will install but with issues, wifi, random reboots, lagging, to name a few.
The reason i mention the formating isnt an ideal solution is because, yes it may work, but the underlying issue of the card not originally working is still there, all you have done is moved the bar a bit, the card its self may still generate errors.

Well, I have tried the 3, 2g SD cards I had from getting phones. I also went and bought a $30 SD card and it did not work, so I returned it and got a different $30 SD card, which also did not work.
I am getting pretty fed up.
Does anyone have a spare SD card, that they know works that they want to sell/give me? I don't care the size, i just want to be able to load peoples pictures into the phone..
I just hate wasting my money on cards that don't seem to work

First of all, since you live in Trinity, it would be nice if you knew how to writer proper sentence to get your question across.
Secondly, why you're spending $30 for an SD card is beyond me.
Third, you need to consider the brand and speed of the SD cards you are supposedly purchasing. Are you buying a brand from a reputable manufacturer and are you buying a card with sufficient speed for WP7? I would recommend at a minimum a Class 4 card (Class 6 highly suggested). Also, a 2GB card probably won't buy you anything on WP7 since WP7 on an HD2 uses the SD card a the primary source of working memory. Thus, at a bare minimum a 4GB card is recommended.
And as most of the posting on the forum have indicated, the SD card issue on the HD2 is a hit and miss affair. And I really do hope you have the SD card in the phone when you install WP7, otherwise, no amount of changing will work.

i would highly NOT recomend a class 6 card, there is less chance of that working.
The class ratings define sustained sequential speed, WP7 doesnt need that, it needs high random speeds, the two are not always compatible, go for a class 2 or 4 card and you are more LIKELY to get a card that works, as teh above poster mentioned, it is hit or miss and there is no compatible list, there is apparently a AT&T card branded for WP7, good luck finding a place that sells that outside of an actual shop and expect to pay a premium for it.

Yes I have installed WP7 with the SD card in. First with the 2g card that came with my HD2, then with a Scandisk 4g one, and then with a $30 Kingston 16g one.
Honestly, im going to radioshack tomorrow and going to buy a 4g kingston class 4 one. In the sd card forum it says it works. So we will see.

did you honestly read those threads? there isnt any 100% compatible cards, all these, "confirmed working cards" threads are about as confirmed as the paper its been wrote on. Buy what you can afford, because the only way you are getting a "confirmed" card is if someone has actually tried it and has given it to you. Also its worth noting that getting it installed on the card is only half the battle, if WP7 has the slightest issue with thecard it it can course several different issues.
As i said, its very much luck if you can get it working, it absolutely flys and is super smooth if you can get it perfect

Sandisk 16GB broken

This is now my 3rd micro sd card that stops working.
In one year 3 cards stopped working 1 with blackstone and 2 with Leo.
What is wrong with this type of cards. Is it normal that they break so often????
Any tools you recommend to let them go live again (the card is totally unrecognized by the LEO)
Now I put the microSD card with adapter on computer, and it reads it but is very very slow. Any software tool recommended?
p.s. trying now to scan/fix/reformat and so on
many users are reporting that hd2 are corrupting memory card. mine too was corrupted. the problem is with hd2 itself. i was using sandisk 8gb in xperia x1 for 3 years without having any problem. my card lasted only 1 week in the hd2
it most definatley seems to be a problem, in which the HD2 is making memory cards dead. Regardless of their Size, Class and Brand

any user got this problem from other brand than sandisk?
yeah, am having the same problem here. when i try to copy data onto the card from my PC, it takes ages and then when i pop it into my HD2, it doesnt read the files. i have formatted the card over and over again. i have just purchased another 16gb card. i will let you know if i encounter the same problem again.
I haven't suffered a card failure in my HD2 yet but have with other phones and iPAQs. SanDisk and Lexar replaced the cards in question but didn't say what had happened to them.
I have had success recovering cards with Rescue Disk Pro but most failures like this cannot be fixed.
Ive been using the Sandisk 16gb mobile ultra class 4 card on my Leo and its been perfect since i bought it, fast and realible. Works just as well on my HD 1.
mine 16gb works like a charm.
p.s. flash cards tend to get corrupted if you dont use "eject" feature. at least sometimes it had happend that, not "ejecting" the usb flash, would result in complete data loss./

You are completely right, ive had a couple of incidents with my HTC HD and HTC HERO, where by altering the data of the sd card while it was out of the phone, it would corrup the information on the device, and not let me install any new programs, hard reset :S andd on my Hero constant safe mode :S
Anywho, Flunik is correct it would be much safer to eject safely from the computer, before, it might just save ou those sd cards.
I noticed that my card wouldn't work properly when it was formatted on a PC!
If I let the Leo format the card it runs fine!!

Hd2 has ruined my 8gb sd card

Alrite peeps,
I hope someone can help me here as I have had no luck anywhere else.
I have had the hd2 for over a month now, it came with a 2gb Sdhc card but I decided to purchase an 8gb sandisk sdhc card.
Ok, I have not encountered any problems so far until today as I scrolled to view some pictures it froze at a pic for 5secs then suddenly to my shock I discovered that it had deleted all my files from my sd card! Now I took it out when I put it back it in, it requested a reformat to make the card readable! So I tried it on my Pc and again it asked to reformat- I had no choice to reformat when I did this I had an error message unable to reformat?! I noticed the capacity had also changed to 30.6mb and when I tried to reformat it in the hd2 it was succesful but still not readable ! Has Anyone else come across this problem and what can I do or is my card messed up?might check if it came with warranty.
Thanks in advance
P.s I'm running the tmobile 1.72 stock rom if that's makes any difference.
Yes, I had the same problem. And it turned out to be a fake card. Where did you buy it?
I had the same problem with the 8Gb card that came in the box from HTC. I have opened a case with HTC, and waiting to see what they say...
incredible ... the same thing happened to me, my guess the card is a fake, yet how does it work before that? I dont know how much data I had in there, it was not a lot, but the moment I tried to put about 15 songs in there, thats when it crashed afterward when I tried to play the songs. I havent had it for 2 weeks when it happened.
Omg.. that is serious thing...
Try to get your pictures back!
I work in a supermarket for home electronics and we've several failures of SD-/Memorycards per week. Even if you've formatted your (micro) SD-card, you can get your data back (esp. pictures) in the most cases. Very important: DO NOT USE THE CARD B4 MAKE A RESCUE TRIAL!
I use a free programm called DIR (Digital Image Recovery) in a special free version (from Foto Erhardt search via heise.de) to rescue the datas. It seems rly lowlevel but fails if it finds heavy memory errors. In such cases I try the free version of recuva, which you could use for other files too. PC Inspector Smart Recovery is the second possibility, but seems to me a bit unstable.
However, in a Windows OS you have to expect in evry second with a bluescreen, data loss, weird errors...
P.S.: All progs should be available in English or as ML.
P.P.S.: Not able to out links in, removed.

SD CARD
Well i have to say this my card is also a disgrace as sandisk was bought with one of the store here in cambodia together with my HTC HD2 and after 2 days my whole input in it gone and requested for reformat..i did and tried for how many times then no luck at all. i returned to the shop and explain to them luckily they understood. same brand but till now its ok 1month passed
I have to say from experience that i wouldn't be surprised if all these failed cards were sandisk branded. I've had 3 sandisk sd cards of varying sizes over the years and they have all failed. They were all bought from reputable stores and never got using for anything other than data storage so spent most of their time in the plastic cases. Since then i've stayed away from sandisk kit and never had a failure and saved some cash in the process coz sandisk also like to charge you more.
This maybe something to test.
exactly the same problem here. Even the 30,6 Mb. matches. I bought from e-Bay, some prik in Korea. escalated at Paypal bust still no money back
Moschino02: change the title of the thread, please
not the HD2 ruins the microsd cards... the cards gives problems(fake / defective / no name brands)

I opened a case at eBay (within 45 days) and they returned my money in a day (great service)! My seller was from Hong Kong and pretended to be a friendly, reasonable guy, but by the time he knew I had returned the card there was no communication anymore whatsoever. As soon as I told the seller about the problem he had the item removed from eBay so I couldn't give negative feedback. eBay mailed me a warning about that too, but by that time I had already paid, received and returned the item.
Ok maybe it was not the hd2 but a faulty card I don't know? Please ignore the title(Im not sure how to amend it) Thanks for the zip file il give that a go..
I see that others have experienced this fault.I was always aware of fake cards prior to making the purchase off eBay, i thought it was geniune as it stated that it had a 5year warranty however the uk business shop/seller who specialises in these products has not replied to me since the fault in regards with the warranty. So I'm having doubts now
Anyways, just be careful and Sync regularly - luckily I did not have much on there exact a few apps and a few pics.
Now I am not so sure if my 8gb micro sd hc card is a fake after all, a friend has a similar card and they look exactly alike. I got my card bundled with the phone, and it did work for quite a while until I copied some music into it, and the card failed after I tried to play the songs. Now my notebook doesnt recognize the micro sd card (sd card adaptor) therefore cant format it since no disk detected, and my hd2 formatted it to a 30mb capacity yet i cant see it in file explorer.

same problem for me. have been using the bundled 8gb card for a mth when suddenly it died 5days ago. I panicked and tried reading it on my laptop. nothing detected. I thought all my files are gone for good. I pulled out the card and reinserted over 10times. all of a sudden, autoplay started and the card and its files were detected! immediately copied and backed up all my files onto my laptop.
true enough to my prediction, this morning I woke up and the card died once more... this time its dead for real. changed to a Toshiba 4gb card this time..
could it be its the phone causing cards to corrupt? regardless of brand? so many ppl have this problem.
Same for me here,
I think it's related to cht scheduler or to cht. I've read something @ pocketpc.ch
so now my 16 gig scandisc sd-card only has 30.6mb
I'm gonna send it back...
I wonder how many of you guys do not use the safely remove hardware or the eject option when you remove your phone from your PC....
I have a multitude of microSD cards and ALL of them still work and most of them are sandisk cards....
failure to use the safely remove hardware or eject option will always end in the card getting corrupted. It may not happen the first time but it will eventually happen and when it does get corrupted the HD2 will not show the card as being present until it is formatted.

Hey Guys!!
I work at a retails shop where we sell heaps of memory cards and cameras a day .. So im pretty experienced with this issue. The microSD card you get with HTC HD2 is a Class (4) card, which transfers about 5mb/s. which means that it has higher transfer rate compared to the normal everyday microSD cards you buy from your retail shops/ebay which are Class (2) which transfers about 2mb/s.
This is the reason that your HD2 kills all those Class (2) cards.. because when the phone doesn't get the enough transfer rate to read.. after couple of days they all stuff up.
Recommendations:
Try getting the new PANASONIC (JAPANESE MADE) microSD card which has a transfer rate for about 20mb/s these cards will work like butter..

so if this guy is right the HD2 only wants class 4 cards...
I for myself bought a class 2, that died (it was a fault, I did want at least a class 4 one)
so good luck altogether!

just pop it in there... but if you've installed apps i think they default to the SD card so go to settings>applications>manage apps and move them to the internal memory before swithcing the cards out so you don't lose your apps

[Q] HD2 - Internal Memory 0 Free Space

I apologize if this has been stated before; however, I have been searching for the past 2 days and could not find anything. I would greatly appreciate any help.
The problem is that I do not have an SD card and installed WP7 onto the internal memory of my HD2. Every time I connect it to zune, zune tells me I have 0 free space left; however, my phone is currently telling me that I have 70+MB left. I try to sync a picture to my phone and it does not work. I tried messing with the reserved space, restarting WP7, re-installing it, etc. But the problem still persists. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need to have an SD card to copy stuff onto the HD2? If there is a way to fix this problem, please let me know or direct me to a thread that contains the fix, either way, I would greatly appreciate it.
You've answered the question yourself.
A sd card is required to let WP7 function properly as it will be part of the OS.
WP7 can be picky on sd cards though, not all are supported. It can cause wifi malfunction, bootloop or WP7 can't recognize SD error message.
It's a gamble, but SanDisk Class 2 and 4 seem to work for most people. (I use a 16gb Class2 SanDisk with no problem)
Hope this helps.
Have the same Problem, installed fresh, sinced my contacts and Email from GoogleMail and now no Space

Sorry sire, but you are placing wrong facts on the table.
The problem mentioned in OP is because WP7 reserves some place which is around ~10% on the device for cache use and to serve as storage of emails, msgs, call logs etc.

Your problem could be that WP7 does not work well with your SD. make sure it is class 4 or greater.
So, you need an SD card to add content to the HD2?

Micro SD Card performance issues

I have recently purchased a Nokia 6 with the intention of using a "previously bought/used" SD card. It's an Emtec SD Card with the following specifications:
Class 10 UHS-I
Read Speed: up to 85MB/s
Write Speed: up to 16MB/s
Compatible with all devices supporting microSDHC and microSDXC standards!!
I Googled which was the best SD cards to use in these phones & the below came up as an option....
"How to choose a MicroSD card for Nokia 3, 5, 6, 8 Android Phones
nokiapoweruser/choose-microsd-card-nokia-android-phones
Nov 28, 2017 - You can get a Class 10 UHS-1 MicroSD cards with great transfer speeds. Nokia 3, 5, 6 support SD card up to 128 GB storage capacity while Nokia 8 supports up to 256 GB. Click on the links below for your market to check available UHS-1 cards on Amazon and choose one for your Nokia smartphone."
The problem I have is that if I format it as "internal" it says the SD card is slow......however, if I format it as "portable" there are no issues!!
I'd like it to be formatted as "internal" because it then allows ALL apps to be moved to the SD card.
So if anyone has an idea as to why this is happening & how it can be prevented.....I'd certainly love to hear your replies
Thank you in advance
This is may caused by encryption of the SD card but I am no expert on this field... microSD cards are really bad at writing very small files so that could be a reason too :silly:

Thank you so much for your response!!
Trust me, I'm no expert either!! But this is happening while I'm trying to format the card.....there's nothing on it & it works fine once formatted as portable?
I'm sooo confused :silly:
same here bro..
I have the same issue with the Nokia 6, but with a Lexar UHS-II card. Was told by Nokia support to send it back to the retailer. I did. Got it back within two weeks, saying they didn't find any problems with the device.
Next I sent it directly to a Nokia service point, got it back within two weeks, saying they didn't find any problems with the device.
So I sent it in a third time (including the SD card this time) and I'm still waiting to get it back. (which I hope to be a good sign, since they received it on Dec. 11 and it's Jan. 02 as I'm writing this. I guess they're ACTUALLY looking into it this time.)
I will update here as soon as I get it back. IF I get the same phone, not a replacement.
I think this is a software related issue, I doubt that there are so many faulty devices without Nokia noticing. If an SD card gets formatted as internal, Android reformats it with the Linux Filesystem Ext4 and encrypts it. In order to write and read data from the SD card, it has to encrypt / decrypt that data every time. I suspect that the Nokia devices struggles somewhere in this process.

I don't know if it's really that many devices, since every time I made contact with Nokia Support they told me (after throughout questioning) it seems to be a very rare problem, so they couldn't tell me any further other than that I should send it in for repairs. Same goes for the retailer I bought it off.

hmmmmm..... I have a spare mSD card, i gonna test it. I will also look for a benchmark program...
It is a SanDisk Extreme 16G Class10 3-in-a-little-U microSDHC1. I do not have the packing anymore but Google says it has 60MBPS Read and 40MBPS Write speed.
I finished my testing: Although there is noticeable difference in the overall lag, it is not that heavy and the phone is still useable... i also tested Scout with an offline map installed and internet access disabled: with everything on internal storage: 5s start time; with everything moved via App2SD, it takes 13s to load.
I did not notice any huge performance drop though
So I got the phone back a few days ago, saying this is a software problem which should be fixed as soon as the Oreo update is installed. Hopefully they're right.
Huh... Weird indeed...
Thanx Heaps
Firstly, I'd like to thank you all for replying.....it's VERY much appreciated & great to know I'm not the only one with this issue!!
2ndly, a couple of things I failed to mention in my original post as I didn't want it to be too long.
Directly before posting my original question, I had actually been live chatting with Nokia support for well over an hour in relation to this problem & I had also tried a 2nd SD card (also Sandisk but had the same issue as my Emtec SD card) while live chatting......in the end I was told they would raise my issue with a higher department & someone would get back to me (still haven't heard back) & due to my frustration I'd forgotten a specific phrase that was coming up on my phone when trying to format it & was reminded by Meuselwitz's post..........after "both" SD card attempts the phrase "This SD card appears to be slow. You can continue, but apps moved to this location may stutter & data transfers may take a long time. Consider using a faster SD card for better performance"!!
I'm using what Nokia recommend!!!
Also, Karlsruhe......were you informed of when that Oreo update was going to be?? Or has it happened???
Hmm... What a shame that Support did not answer. Did you buy your SD cards online? I once bought a "SanDisk" on ebay but it was a (pretty good tho) scam which had significant speed issues and only ~2GB storage (I bought it as 16GB)
As a side note: Meuselwitz and Karlsruhe are (German) cities, not usernames
(well Meuselwitz is more like a village but no one cares anyway)
So... finally the support (via chat) gave me the solution to this problem: you need a card with at least 80mb/s write speed. Got myself a Samsung pro plus card, and it's fine.
That was it? Wow... Okay, I am glad that your problem is solved now :good:

My apologies....I've only just noticed the names at the top of the box.....I'm soooo sorry
I actually can't remember where I bought it.....looks like I'll have to buy another!! It does have 64GB thankfully I'll put this one in my work phone & the new one in the Nokia
You're all awesome
Thank you all again so very much I would not have been able to deal with support again!!
It is so good to know that "I'm not the only one" with issues with a new phone & to be able to get fantastic advice & feed back is even better
& the fact that I'm pretty unskilled when it comes to technology doesn't help my cause lol I'd rather build something
Also.....how bad would it be of me to finish this huge "Thank You".....with another question???
OK....so here goes, I'm trying to work out why, when I'm sent an MMS message that it automatically puts it into a group message with the person who sent it & "my phone"?? Then when I send a message back to the person who sent the original MMS I receive the exact same message :crying:
Any advice would be truly welcomed
Thank you in advance

That can happen, no worries
I was having the same issue with an older Sandisk Ultra card.
Switched to a Samsung EVO select, issue resolved.
I have a similar problem with a verbatim premium of 256gb with my Nokia
Hello I bought a verbatim card of 256gb class 10, at first my phone recognized the card with 260gb, when I tried to use it as portable device, but when I tried to format as internal storage, the device start to popup a message unsupported SD card. This device doesn't support this card. After that I TRIED to format in setting and then with a computer with the app SD memory card formatter , and the computer recognized the card and I can transfer files, but when I put the card in the Nokia 6, it's show the message unsupported card, what I have to do in this case. I want to use the SD card in the Nokia 6
