[Q] Is your SD card working after the April 19th update? - Focus General

Ever since I bought my Focus in November, I couldn't get it to go for more than 24 hours without randomly rebooting. Sometimes it would reboot as much as several times per hour.
After applying the April 19th update, my Focus has not frozen or randomly reset in the last 48hours. I am using the same exact SD card that I had in there before the update, which did not work.
Are others finding the same thing? If so, this is really good news!

All of that sounds very promising. I will get my hands on another sandisk class 4 32gb card during next week and test it again (this time hoepfully without destroying it).

48 Hours and SD card is still working!
I have a 32GB Sandisk Class 2 card that I tried in my Focus prior to the NoDo update. The phone was somewhat sluggish (scrolling web pages, app lists, etc would lag and stutter) and would reboot itself every couple of days. It appeared that it returned to factory settings after the reboot but all of my data would return after power cycling the phone. The reboots didn't start until two days after installing the card.
I decided to try the card again after installing NoDo and reading this thread. I reinstalled all of my apps and filled up the phone with over 15GB of music, videos and pictures. I noticed immediately that the phone remained responsive. It has been 48 hours and I have seen no sluggishness and have had no reboots. I am crossing my fingers that this will continue. If they really did fix the SD card issue with the NoDo update why aren't they making a big deal out of it?

Using a Sandisk 16GB class 4 pre and post update. Mine is more stable and very pleasing now. I don't see the slow main screen loading I did pre update.

Sandisk 16gb card. Rebooted constantly pre-Samsung update. Don't think it's rebooted a single time yet. I'm a happy man.

Good question, until MS or Samsung actually come out and say they fixed the SD Card situation or come and say they did "something" concerning this issue I'm holding off..
You would think if they addressed this problem someone would say something!!! Lord knows if they did sales for the Focus would jump, the ability to add up to 32Gbs is a pretty big deal..

I am getting inconsistent results for the storage card write rate using WP Bench. I ran it multiple times, back to back with the following results: 5.6, 4.9, 4.9 3.2, reboot phone, 3.6, 3.2, 3.1 . The rest of the benchmarks remained very consistent. The phone warms up quite a bit after running the benchmark. Perhaps the performance is affected by internal heat? It probably is just unstable performance with this SD card, even though the phone has been very stable and responsive after the NoDo update.

SanDisk 16GB Class 2
I installed a SanDisk 16GB Class 2 when I purchased the Focus in late December last year. Some random reboots, maybe 3-4 in all that time, no lost data. Since I updated to the official ATT Samsung Update, not problems at all. Still too early to tell of course, but looking good.

SanDisk 32G class4
before nodo: Works but reboot ~ 2 days a time (sometimes don't find the card after reboot, and need another reboot)
hacked installed nodo: Works but seems to reboot less, about 4 days - 1 week a time (Still sometimes don't find the card after reboot, and need another reboot)
Samsung official nodo: works and don't notice the SD related reboot yet, but too early to says.

After NoDo i bought a Sandisk 32gb class 4 and no issues since 3 weeks. No reboot, data remains after soft reset. Have almost 23gb of data.

I had nearly the same issues, except mine would reboot even more often than that. I have gone for 5 days now without a single reboot. I am glad to hear that so many other people are having similar success!

I would highly recommend the less-expensive one sold and fulfilled by Amazon. Amazon is an authorized seller and highly reputable. You aren't likely to get a fake from them. The other sellers at Amazon...I can't vouch for.

Question
Are the 32 CLASS 4's fakes or are they real. (sandisk)
I cannot find the 32 class 4's on the sandisk website.

I purchased one of the newly released Windows Phone approved Microsd cards from AT&T on Friday before I received the two AT&T updates the following week. The card is an 8GB Sandisk Class 4 card. The installed fine and works fine to date. No problems or issues that I have seen so far. I am very pleased with the card and the updates. I am using a Samsung Focus which I purchased in January. I currently show 14.59 GB Total Storage and 13.10 GB Available Storage.

i get it in ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=280652928461&view=all&tid=652993750018
the card doesn't have blister, but trust me, is genuine. The card arrives in 3 weeks to my country (Mexico) and comes from korea a think. I search the inferior code in google and found is a real item code in sandisk website.

My experience with Sandisk Class 2 32gb. I do have homebrew apps installed.
i just tested my sd card and it screwed everything up. I had to re-establish my phone with the Zune software, then i had to sign into my phone again. Now i can't add email accounts to my phone. Tried to revert back to my backup, and now it is not showing. I'm assuming because i had to re-establish my phone with the Zune software. If i revert i will lose homebrew and Unlock, right? Does anybody know how to bring back the backup again in zune? What are my options?

safest 16gb sd card for focus?

I have been using a pny 8 gb class 4 card in my phone for the past 3 weeks. It had been working great, but today it reset and lost all my data. God the phone up and running after a hard reset.
anyways, I want to purchase a 16gb card now. But i want to get one that I know will work. I read through the working sd card thread, but I found it challenging to pick out the ones that really worked. many people had success stories, but often they were from cards they only had for a few weeks, or with little of the memory used.
so my question, is what is the safest 16gb card for the focus. One that no one has had any trouble with. After reading through the thread i saw no one complaining about the samsung 16gb class 4. Can any confirm or deny this?
I've been running the Samsung 16g for about a month now without a single problem. Bought it off eBay from seller doctorwatsonsclinic.

awesome. I've actually been looking at one from the same guy. Have you filled it past the internal 3 gb?
Internal NAND is 8g, I have over 10g stored on it and growing.
I have been using the 16GB Patriot memory card and I have not had any issues yet.

i've heard that one is good. How long have you had it? and how full is it.
I have had it about 3 weeks and I only have about 10 gigs free on my phone. I will try to fill it up all the way and let you know how it does.
anyone else?
Going by the posts, the safest would be these Class 4, 16GB cards: Patriot & Kingston.
I've been using a 16gb Samsung class 2 for the past 2 weeks. No resets or lost data. I've noticed some slowdown at times but nothing major. Much better than the 32gb SanDisk class 2 I was using, which had multiple resets and data loss after just five days

That's with a Samsung, not Sandisk card, right? As far as I understood, everyone has had a nearly-flawless time with the Samsung cards.

ZDNet Article Claims Lockups and Wi-Fi Issues Related to Bad SD Cards?

This morning an article in ZDNet claims that the writer himself was able to fix these issues by swapping out the stock SDCard on the DVP. Has anyone who has had these issues fixed their problem by doing just this? I myself am a little skeptical myself, but am wondering if this is even a possible reason for all of our problems.
Article is here: http://t.co/38b4FiY
Who knows, some of the guys who got the earliest DVP's bought from MS stores on Nov 8 tried swapping the card, results were hit and miss for compatibility. Some Samsung Focus owners have no problems with their cards, some do. No guarantee the card you use wont give problems. I'd like to see if Dell truly has a fix for the freezing issue, whatever it may be and then look further into this claim.

I find it hard to believe, but I have not seen anyone say it has not worked for them. I swapped my 16g card for a different one, no problems. A friend of mine did the same with a 32g card, same thing. Word is, the issue does not exist on the 8g card. Conclusions...they say none. They're smarter than me. But my phone works well. They're still looking for answers.
I swapped to an 8GB card - no problems.
I swapped to a 32GB card - more problems than before.
Swapped back to my 8GB card - no problems.
I still need to exchange the 32GB card and try a new one, maybe the DVP is just very picky about cards (including the 16GB that Dell includes).
PS: my post on how to do the card switch was mentioned in the article! I feel special.
I swapped to a previously owned 8gb... no issues.
then swapped to a newly purchased 32gb sandisk card... no issues.
getting a 32 gig class 4 microsd to try hopefully monday
My 16GB passes the SD test but I still have issues using WiFi and marketplace at the same time.

Was this the Transcend card you got http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-mic...YOC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1297964644&sr=8-6? I tried a Sandisk 32GB and it still crashes with wifi but I'm thinking it may be a class 4 as its not labelled in any way, and still crashes. And how is the speed of the device with the new card?
Will be picking mine up in a few mins at the Microsoft store near my house. 8Gb. Salesman yesterday acknowledged the problems but said the newest builds run much smoother. Well see about that!

The 8GB version has not been having the stability problems that the 16GB version has. There were some other issues with the phones sold in November at the Microsoft Store WP7 launch, but those have long since been resolved.
In other words, you should be fine

Thanks, good to hear, already ordered it and will be installing it today.
Edit: well looks like I'm definitely out of luck, the Transcend card also locked up when using wifi so I'm stuffed. Now have to suffer 8 months of no wifi till I can move to a Nokia WP7.

Micro SD cards weird issue

I've just experienced a weird issue with the SD cards.
So whats happen.
After I started to use Android on my HD2 my 8GB Kingston Class4 SD card just get a bit small. So I decided to buy some bigger one. First I bought a 32GB unbranded micro SD but soon I found that HD won't take that much so I sold it straight away.
Than I've looked around here on XDA and I found that so many guys using 16GB without probs.
So I bought another SD this time 16GB unbranded ( to keep the cost low) Class10 what's probably fastest at the moment.
I backup my old 8GB card ( just copy all content into my comp ). Than copied all content onto new 16GB card and sticked it into HD2. I thought all should work without any probs but it wasn't.
Phone was really slow, unresponsive, many fc.
OK I set its just need to flash the ROM again so I deleted content of .data folder and did a fresh clean flash with all caches wiped. I thought after this it have to be OK but again it wasn't.
So I started to be a bit worried by that time than I decide to buy another 16GB card but this time I spend more and I bought a Kingston 16GB Class4 ( same brand and class like my old 8GB ). That was for sure it will work 100% if my old works fine. And many people using 16GB, also one of my friends got 16GB SanDisk with Jaws MIUI ( I flashed it for him ).
So today I received that new 16GB Kingston Class4.
I did the same again - backup/restore all content and surprise *** NOT GOOD again; slow, unresponsive, fc's
So reinstall again and surprise *** NOT GOOD again; slow, unresponsive, fc's
I've almost rip of all mine hair (I mean the few bits whats still there )
So after all of this I came out with the last chance idea....
To do total wipe - thats included
- delete all data from the card
- flash stock Winmo ROM
- flash latest MAGLDR
- flash latest CWM Rec.
- flash latest Jaws MIUI
.......
.......and surprise *** All is OK, the SD is working just fine, finaly
So weird and I don't understand this.
I know this was probably long reading post but maybe someone have an explanation for this or some one have a same issue like me and can use this like a last help.
Where did you buy the card from? The market is flooded with low quality counterfeits, so always buy good brand from reputable source. I always buy sandisk, and never had a problem.
well normally I buy a Kingston or Sandisk. This was a first time I get unbranded cards but anyway at the and it wasnt caused by card quality cos this Kingston didn't work, only after I've done all that steps all is OK.

I have the same issue with Kingston 8GB Class 4 SD card, it is very slow, unresponsive and sometimes it doesn't come back from lock screen... i have to restart it... right now i am using Scandisk 4GB Class 2 card, it is OK but my phone heats up pretty quickly...
How can i resolve the heating issue... any idea?
Well, Kingston re-brands their SD Cards, so you never know what you're getting. I have a few and you can just pull the "Kingston" labels off to see what the original manufacturer is, and often thats just another rebrand anyway. I'll assume they do the same with their Micro SD cards.
maybe its a fake card
If u want to verify your card genuine or not, go to fake-memory.com,
u can download some tools over there.
your card might be ok today, but once its near full, you will see weird thing happening again, I also bought OEM card. (unbranded)
lucky my "32GB" is really a 1GB, so I spot it early.
Just get refund from seller through ebay.
I would have think about the SD also. But due to the solution you apply, I think now about a corrupted file somewhere. Maybe at a low level of your NAND.
That's just a thought (so maybe not so helpfull).
We play sorcerers with our phone... so I'm not surprized this happens.
I also have a corrupted SD few times. The validation processes are important and I don't think we can do the same as manufacturer on this point.
As the first level loader is never touch we can't brick our phones but this is the price to pay. DO NOT PUT VITAL DATA WITHOUT BACKUP IN YOUR PHONE !

What I meant was where did you buy your kingston from? Kingston cards counterfeited alot. Kingston is also known to sell many low quality or defective cards. Kingston doesn't do any of their own manufacturing... they just rebrand cards, so many times they get bottom of the barrel cards. I won't buy kingston anymore after I did some research. Sandisk actually owns their own factories and create the chips they sell... they probably keep all the good ones for themselves and sell the bad quality or defective ones to kingston. I really don't understand how kingston is known as a good brand-name, because they shouldn't be. Buy sandisk cards from a reputable seller.
I got 3 micro cards
1. adata 16gb class 10
2. pqi 8gb class 6
3. sandisk 8gb class 2
All cards are without any errors and works with WM6 well. Unfortunatelu on Android with ext partition isnt so good.
There is no single rom using ext partition and working well on my class 10 card!!!
On PQI some works ok, some not
And on Sandisk every rum is running without errors.
What's going on? Ported android to HD2 probably is not 100% compatible with HD2 card reader ;-((((
I thought all is OK.well it was a day and now im back to sh*t.phone its slowing down, sometime cant wake up from lock screen or have to wait 30 or more seconds. i dont know whats the problem. looks like i have to sell my card and buy another one.this time i go for Sandisk but 100% genuine. its gona be expensive but what else i can do :-(

[Q] Should I give WP7 a go? For the second time.

Goodnight/Good morning my fellow XDA-ers!
Okay so I have a USA T-Mobile HD2 I installed WP7 the day after it was released by DFT but the day after I was forced back to WM6.5 due to the SD card issue, my device was constantly restarting every 15-ish minutes. I was wondering if anyone has any experience running WP7 successfully on their HD2's for a decent amount of time with a specific card. I'm willing to purchase one of these cards as I want to get away from WM6 as soon as possible, but I really want to know if the card will work!
What I'm looking for is a 16Gb card that works. So if you have purchased a 16GB micro SD card that has been working flawlessly with your HD2 for some time now, please chime in, and please include a serial number as I want to get the exact thing!
Thanks for your time.

Just recently purchased a Sandisk 16gb card. Works flawlessly. No crashes, hangs, resets or whatsoever.
AAARRRGGHHH!!!!
how many times do a few others and myself have to tell people this!!!
no two cards are alike, you could buy two identical cards and one might not work, there is no "working card list"
Statistically you will have better luck with a class 2 or a class 4, ive personally had better luck with sandisk class 4
but that is it, its just luck
I've been running mine flawlessly since the first rom (now on my second) on my HD2. I'm using the stock 16gb SanDisk that came with the phone. Indeed it is "luck of the draw" but most people I've talked with and/or flashed for others have had no problems with the stock sd cards.

Yeah, the class 2 sandisk with serial ending in A11M were called wp7 certified by sandisk for about a day before they pulled that certification. What dazza said is true... at the moment, card makers don't test their random access speeds and don't keep them consistent enough batch to batch to guarantee any specific card will work. Sandisk makes very high quality cards and I think you're best chance of getting a card that works is to go with class 2 or 4 sandisk. I have few Sandisk class 2 cards ending in A11M... 1 8gb, 2 16gb, and 1 32gb. All work... All work flawlessly except for 1 of the 16gb cards, which give a little lag, but no resets or anything like that. After testing, the access speeds are very different on the 2 cards, even though they are the same brand, class, and model number. Were even bought from same store, but 6-9 months apart.
So yeah, if you want to try wp7, go for a class 2 or 4 sandisk. It will most likely work... but there's no 100% guarantee. But sandisk has good warrantee... if in the rare case it doesn't work, tell sandisk it's brok or something and try to get them to send a different one.

MicroSD Card issues fixed after "Samsung Update"?

A little background... I've been back and forth on the SD card issue with my phone. With stock/7004 it would reboot occasionally and I got worried that it would brick my phone (it already bricked one on me previously) so I decided to rip the card out. I unbranded my phone and installed 7008 and decided to re-install the SD card. It seemed to be rather stable although still would spontaneously reboot occasionally (maybe a few times a week). I installed NoDo with the Hungary trick and it started rebooting much more frequently (several times per day). This time it would even do it when plugged in! Ugh. I had tried the registry hack but it didn't seem to affect anything.
Then yesterday's update came and it hasn't rebooted a single time since. It's a bit early to know for sure but it does seem like the issue is gone.
I don't think it's a coincidence that AT&T is now offering "certified" cards. The cards didn't change nor did their level of testing... Samsung just fixed the underlying problem. Microsoft has shown that even their certified cards can vary greatly; it's just a product of the manufacturing process.
I will note that that I put the registry changes back to their original state (DisablePowerManagement=1) as that is how the firmware that shipped yesterday has it set.
Anyone else care to chime in? Cautiously optimistic that these absurd SD card issues are behind us.
I have not had a single reboot or a stutter on my music. Its been running great!

I have also had zero issues since the latest update...

I went through the same steps too. With the unbranded NoDo update, my phone restarted at least once every 30 minutes. After I applied the ATT NoDo update, I haven't had a single reboot yet. I feel confident in saying that my SanDisk c2 32gb card works now.
Leads me to wonder which other cards will work now.
Running a 16GB Sandisk class 4 card, about 4GB free. Before the official AT&T nodo update, my phone was restarting a couple of times per day. Post update, my phone has been up 1 day 19 hours (so far) without a restart.
File this in the "for what it's worth" department: an acquaintance of mine works on the phone 7 application team at MSFT. He told me that the MSFT LG team had made a bunch of fixes to the SD driver, but the Samsung team was on a different release schedule and was not able to pick up the fixes for the original Focus release, but rather they were picked up in the nodo release. Given my results and the results I am reading about, this makes sense.
Comparing my WP BENCH storage speed before and after the samsung update, it increased by over a MB/s. I also have not noticed any stuttering or anything like that.
The next test would be to benchmark a non-certified card against the 8gb AT&T certified card to see if there are any noticeable speed differences...
That would be GREAT info.
I can confirm that the Transcend 16gb class 6 card still does not work after nodo. It will not even boot up after formatting the card and starting the phone.
Will you guys reply with what card you have IF the Nodo update IMPROVED your card (model, class, size and everything)
I was having problems with my Kingston 16GB C4 card, and ended up having to do a hard reset without the chip to get the NoDo update. After reading a few comments here, I added the old card and did a new hard reset. Now I have the full 22GB, but the phone wasn't remembered by Zune like it was last time. On the plus side, it looks like NoDo and the firmware are now baked in so no worries about loosing these when resetting the phone.
Anyway I'll reload all my stuff which could take weeks and I'll let you know what happens.
[The Kingston 16GB C4 card was one of the more stable cards out there. I believe only the SanDisk 8GB, SanDisk 16GB and Samsung 16GB cards worked better. I have not lost any data with the Kingston card before NoDo, but it would be slow enough to prevent me from opening some programs ocationally. I would also get a random reboot every few days.]

16 GB Samsung from Nikolai on eBay. I think it's a Class 2, but I don't remember.
I have the microcenter 16GB Class 2 card loaded to 3GB free. Never had problems before Nodo, still no problem now after Nodo.
Same with mine...no issues or slowdowns or glitches of any kind. Still using the same 16GB class 4 card, too.
I purchased the new, Windows Phone approved Microsd card at AT&T before the NoDo update arrived. It installed fine, worked great before and after the update. It's an 8 GB Sandisk, Class 4 card. Everything is working great.
I jsut posted this on another thread, but it fits here too.
I just tested my Sandisk 32gb class 2 card and it screwed everything up. Problem occured over the 10gb mark.
When i got my focus , i removed the sandisk 8 gig card from my Fuze and put it in my focus and have not had a single problem from the git go. and i originally ordered it from the cell phone shop . com. lol guess i was just one of the lucky few.
Kingston 32GB Class 4
My Kingston 32GB Class 4 SDHC has worked well from day one with the exception that only half of the capacity can be used.
Once the Device holds around 20 GB of data the phone reboots when trying to add more.
As we approached the Nodo update, I had hopes that this barrier would go away, but alas after Nodo, I still cannot use the full capacity of the card. It exhibits the same behavior after filling to around 20 GB of data.
Has anyone had success with a 32 GB card that allows access to the full 40 GB available? If so, which card?

Personally, I have had no issues with v7390 NoDo update, and currently have a Patriot SD 16GB class 4 card in...Have loaded up music, podcasts...past internal 8GB memory, no performance loss, random reboots at all...freezes.
Samsung Focus Rev. 1.3
{Patriot advertises this card being marketed specifically for Focus...FWIW}
I'm buying this card tonight if there are any left.

Will report sometime this weekend if it's working. I have just over 16GB of music so the space on the card will definately get used.
