Being offered an upgrade.. - HD2 General

I've nearly come to the end of my contract (In July) for my HD2. I got a call today saying I'm eligible for an upgrade but I'm just completely stuck!
My HD2 seems as if it is still top of the range besides the HD Recording (Desire S).
I've however managed to crack my HD2 Screen a few months ago so an upgrade may be required..
My question is, is it worth getting an upgrade and if so - What phone?
(The HTC Sensation is looking like the best candidate even though there is no release date and my network provider might not stock it by July!)
PS I am in the UK.

I'd wait for the Sensation, any other phone wouldn't really be an "upgrade" IMO

I'm in the same boat, and to be honest the SGS2 looks better than the Sensation, so I'm eyeing that up at the moment.

the SGS2 will have some of the same things as the SGS namely less dev than HTC and no Sense port probably, or a very crude one. I don't see what the SGS2 would have over the Sensation at all to be honest.

You are kidding right? How about 32GB of storage (as opposed to 1GB or 4GB depending on region), USB host, 1GB of RAM (Sensation 768MB), super AMOLED, unlocked bootloader, there's more but I don't remember it all off the top of my head.
That said, I don't want to leave WM. Too many privacy problems on Android and, of course, 10x worse on iOS and its clone WP7. Me, I'm waiting for a high end WebOS phone. My next phone will be a super cheap HD2 when my curretn HD2 dies .

I'd still take a sensation, that ram won't make too much of a difference, the storage can be made up with a microsd, bootloader will be unlocked...
webos is good stuff, not a bad deal,

Your absolutely right, Windows mobile still does it for me.. At least if you got the right stuff, windows mobile is just the best. i've tried Android, but its to simple + it doesn't have the custome fixes as for the Windows mobile version(good led notification app, extended notifications on bottom keys, and bottom keys always on for example), HTC Sense is just way better on Windows Mobile, At least the HD2 can run anything smooth, unlike the touch pro and other phones. HD2 is the mobile.

HTC HD3 first real pictures & specifications

look at this link http://wmpoweruser.com/htc-hd7-in-real-pictures-looks-great-kickstand-on-display/#more-20107 the htc hd3 is leaked in real pictures as well as the specifications which are
5mpix camera with hd recorde and matal stand
8gb on board storage :S
same 8250 processor
4.3 inch screen with capastive buttons
no thing on ram
no HDMI
i think it must be hd2 wp7 edition
and here is the source for specifications
http://wmpoweruser.com/htc-hd7-specs-leak-with-tiny-picture-we-have-a-better-one/
same hardware new look...**** that...ill wait for new processors and something actually new rather than just changing the shell. though its a very nice looking phone
a very difficult choice between the hd7 and the desire HD imo
only 8gb storage.......I was excited.......
not anymore.......
what make hd2 better is the extended sd card memory , and the dual boot , that is impossible for now on wp7 , i will stay with hd2 and wait for wp7 port , i think with these specifications we could have a good port
http://www.htcinside.de/
says it will have 8g plus a micro sd slot.
But i wont be upgrading phones until i can get a larger processor and tv out at least. regardless of os
same hardware.... i was expecting a 1.5 snapdragon or something.... if that's the case wouldn't it be easier to port it to HD2?
THe only diff i see is the backend of the HD7 vs HD2. HD7 has a stand.. Can't someone just make a HD2 backplate with a stand, doesn't that = HD7?

agree...da_g and few other devs working on WP7 port for hd2...so rather stick with that till i see some new hardware...the only things that would make me consider buying a new phone is slcd, new processor, better camera,tv out.
and the HD3/7 probably only has slcd...so 1/4 =
if thats the best they can do, i will stick with the HD2!
??Quad band UMTS
I wonder if it will be quad band UMTS as well as GSM, like iphone 4 - a true world phone. Would be nice

the graphics drivers avaliable for windows is much more better than android , so with this old processor the hd3 will perform even better than the desire hd
I sincerely hope the hardware specs are a joke. Or HTC just wants to surprise us all with a bang. But if true, its not much of an upgrade from our beloved HD2. And I think that would be crazy.
As if I didn't hate apple enough already. Now they have driven M$ into forcing HTC into making crap devices with a locked down OS, non-expandable memory, and the mind-numbing loser-friendly approach where it doesn't matter how hi tech a device is; it only matters how well you can market it to the technotards that don't know what a microSD card is and think that facetime is a groundbreaking new technology that never existed until now...
Seriously though! It's looking more and more like the HD2 is the last phone I'm ever going to own...

Yeah - couldn't agree more. So a year down the line they've decided to release pretty much the same phone.
I think my comment here covers my feelings...

HD2 -> Evo -> DesireHD -> HD3/7???
really sticking with a theme HTC they all basicly look the same with minor differences. just like.. oh yer iphone
I dont like the design.... I like HD2 better simple and doesnt look like it has been designed for like idk umm 2 weeks?
Same as HD2
Its true it the same spec as the hd2 with just windows mobile 7 so will we get a good port very quick = i think so yes

[Q] HD2 Owners

Hey fellow HD2 Owners... If you were to replace your device, say thinking of getting another one, which phone would it be with? I'm seeing more and more cool phones out there, and now that my HD2 is being repaired due to the dreaded no screen response issue, I've had more time to look at other devices. But still cant come to replacing my HD2. What would it take for you to just up and buy another phone?
Well I work for t-mobile and I have a HD2 as well. I just loaded android via magldr with the Mytouch 4g build from motoman234 about 2 weeks ago. It looks great but just works ok. It lacks some of the actual features you would get like wifi calling with the real android 2.2, and the screen gets shaky and presses where it shouldn't. Makes games a little difficult. I liked the HD2 especially after some of the updates made it function as well as possible on windows. I would just spend the money and get a real mytouch 4g unless you don't have an upgrade or had a warranty still or insurance. Just get a legit android phone if you can..there are apparently always gonna be a few problems.

i changed my HD2 To the desire HD in october last october after a pretty exciting year with the most versatile hand set every made,I'm pretty pleased with the DHD! Even if sometimes i miss the HD2 for it hacking capabilities, the difference in speed, stability and especially power consuption is quite obvious.
I'd replace it with another HD2.
That's what i'll be doing when my contract is up for renewal, assuming it's still available and keep it in the box as a backup, otherwise i'll be getting whatever resales the highest on fleabay to then buy another HD2 from elsewhere or bank the money.
you probably can get it cheap

Thats what I was thinking also, about the DHD. One of my biggest peaves was the power consuption. If the HD2 is on standyby it can last 1 day and a half almost 2, but on heavy usage I can barely get it past six hours. Thats ok though. I love my HD2 and cant see myself getting anything other than maybe a DHD.

You'll be getting about 30% more autonomy and on standby or minimum usage (answering some calls reading a couple of mails and sms and a little navigation) with syncro and 3g+ (hspda+) i get true several days usually 2-3
But still on heavy usage you ll get about 8-10hrs if the battery is well calibrated

no , my sig said hd2 is a cheap dhd ... depending how u look at it , alot of folks use it for android exclusive(me too) and are getting similar experience for less cost ... i still have much love for the hd2 tho
I would keep my Leo and perhaps going for HTC Inspire
i have gone for the mozart, but its nothing compaired to my old hd2. sold it and regret it now. may have to get a new one. i can even remember how to flash one anymore, lol
Im not convinced of any other phone really. Im sticking to my HD2. Its been a week and a half and still haven't got it back yet from repair. Cant wait. I miss it so much. Now if only Google Voice would make it to Puerto Rico I would be super stoked!
look at the updates in hd2 nand android section,my Rafdroid HD v3 is working flawless and gives me the same performance like DHD!!...trust me bro,it is best phone ever build(for what it can do)!!!
Already a bunch of threads on this in the actual HD2 forums, most closed for being duplicates.
Most popular answer is: another HD2
I am currently using HD2 with NAND Android....and my next phone will be HTC Pyramid!!!! Native Super Android Phone!!!!
Most definitely getting the Htc Pyramid. Can't go wrong with dual core.
hy m8, in my opinion Hd2 is the ultimate devices (smart phone)
on this devices you can put WM 6, WP, Android, Meego, Unbunu, Win 98
I love my HD2 !
Why so many threads about replacing our lovely HD2s now. >.>
Well I guess that answer is that our HD2s is a last year's phone, and many people are having the chance now to get a new contract, etc.
Well I wouldn't trade it for anything on the market right now. However I don't think i will trade it (I want to experiment with it when I have enough skills to ), I will get a new phone however later this year.

HTC HD2 upgrade to what?

Hi All
I am due a free upgrade in March, I currently have the HTC HD2, I love playing about with SD builds and running gingerbread on this phone.
My question is, what phone should I buy next that the devs here are working on sd android builds?
Thanks

Keep the HD2 and move yourself over to NAND Android Builds.
Get the upgrade, sell the upgrade, keep the hd2!
for me (2 months on contact to run) i'll be dropping a chunk off of the monthly contract and go to sim only, and buy another hd2 direct for when this one (broken screen, faulty gps,,, dropped it, , , ,) finally gives out, and wait for a year and see where the phone/tablet convergence leads.
HTC Pyramid, for sure
As other suggested...keep the HD2, sell the upgrade lol
But if you really want to upgrade, wait for dual core phones to come out..anything else than that is not worth..
What's the general feeling for the max. screen size for a phone? The HD2 with 4.3" is a good size, and I'm very happy with mine, but a 5" screen or so (like the Dell Streak) could still fit in a shirt / back pocket....
I'm waiting for 1280 x 720 resolution on whichever phone I get next....
I would personally stick with the HD2. There doesnt seem to be much out there at the moment that is heaps better than the HD2. I am waiting for some of the dual core models to come out before I think about upgrading..
MyTouch 4G
Why not get the MyTouch 4G... my wife has it and it's a great phone. Fast and bright. Front facing camera is cool too.
Don't know if it can be programmed like the HD2, but if it can, then that's a good phone.

Read somewhere the Samsung Galaxy S2 will be a 4.3 inch screen with 1280x720 resolution, dual core CPU at 2GHz. Mouth watering...
Personally, I'm waiting to see if the new BlackBerry with the touchscreen gets released on T-MoUS and is worth buying before upgrading. Otherwise I'm waiting on dual core devices like everyone else. Right now my HD2 does everything it needs to do. Would love the front facing camera but I know if I got whats out right now I'd be pissed in about 6 months when they start releasing phones with some awesome specs.

first time that i hear the name......dual-core cpu sounds interesting.
I left my HD2 for a G2. But honestly I like the HD2 better from a hardware perspective. The G2 just seems to run a little better than the HD2 especially games so that's the reason I eventually left my HD2. But unless you get the option to upgrade a line only 6 months into a contract for free for a G2 I would hold on to your upgrade for something better. I have both the Vibrant and the G2 and neither are significant upgrades of the HD2. In fact I think the HD2 runs much better day to day than my wife's Vibrant. Wait for the dual cores or something comparable to the HD2 in native Android form.
I'm getting the Atrix 4g, just ordered it. Now that I see the bootloader has the possiblity of being cracked, I now want it. However, if the samsung galaxy II had come out already, i would get it instead as I fancy myself with taking pictures.
Well I won't be tossing my hd2 though. Atleast, i don't want to.
A Tmo rep told me that the LG Optimus 3D will be on Tmo soon.
I am saving my upgrade too for something dual core.
But I will always keep my trusting and flash fun HD2.
I've been keeping a spreadsheet of the specs of the latest android phones and the activity on their respective XDA Android Development Sections. The XDA data is probably a week old. Performance ratings are from benchmarks on Anandtech.

[Q] What to get after HD2...

Hi all
I was just wondering if you can share any comments what smartphone have best apps in 2011.
What you will buy after HD2 ?
thanks
This is a question thats on my mind at the minute as well.
The main problem for me is that Ive become so used to the 4.3" screen that I really dont think I could handle using a phone with a screen of less than 4".
Im currently torn between the DHD, Nexus S, Incredible S, Desire S or the Sensation.
Im seriously thinking about waiting until June for the sensation, my concern is the battery though. HTC seem to be pretty lax when it comes to getting optimal battery life from a phone, the sensation with its dual core and new sense (which will probably be even more of a memory hog than the old sense) is going to tear the arse out of any battery.
Theres also the issue of how long its going to take to acheive root / s-off.... (Im very impatient and will not be able to put up with sense for that long, I really dont like the android version for some reason.)
DHD, obviously very similar to the HD2 with a good amount of development going on. However, poor battery life and the age of the device put me off a little. When I upgrade I'm going to have that phone for 18 months so I feel like I should probably go for a evice thats as new as possible.
Nexus, the only thing really putting me off is the fact that its made of nasty looking shiny plastic and doesnt feel as solid as the HD2. Also not a huge selection of custom ROMS for it from what I can see, compared to some devices.
So errr yeah... lol
Well I would recommend you to watch the latest updates at MIX 11 about WP7 Mango update I think you will like it a lot. And now that DFT is bringing Custom SPL to WP7 Source: Twitter (CotullaCode)
I think Android is great, it opens many doors specially for people on XDA, but the thing is. I always think android is missing the experience. It's not fun, and it's just an OS with apps. I will use Android till the end of my contract... And when the time comes I definitely get a WP7 device. Of course an 4.3"(+) screen. Once you get a fridge phone always a fridge phone Personally I'm waiting for Nokia to join the WP7 party, I know Nokia has the best and trustworthy hardware for their phones.
I just took Nexus S, actually looks not bad but screen is noticeably smaller. I did it because I wanted to resell my HD2 while still in warranty and Samsung are offering very good discounts on the SNS in France (it costs less than the Galaxy!). When Sensation comes out and price calms down I'll resell the SNS to get that marvel. Sadly, I'm hugely missing HTC Sense...
seriously even i am kinna confused i i say i want desirehd its been already ported to hd2 & so also nexus...i hope htc comes out dual core hd2...so we can start the fun all over again i know its not possible!
But ATM its just hd2 for me!
I think HTC EVO 3D will be my next phone after HD2 TMOUS
Simple, ....Another HD2

Sadly I totaly disagree with your Nokia statement - they have lost the plot in high end phones over the last couple of years.
The N8 is a software nightmare, as was the 5800 and that range of phones.
Their new mid range phone C7 - C5 have software issues.
This is not just my view I work it Mobile technical support. Nokia are no longer the top manufacturer - they do not rate the top 5 now. Use Google and read the comments from their CEO, he says about the same!
Incredible is my next phone - if my provider supply it
I think that Iphone 4 is superior for the touch screen and for the smoothness of system...Nevertheless I'm waiting for new devices of Htc like Sensation or evo 3d to make a choice...
Samsung Galaxy S 2 anyone?
I've been wondering this too. I just bought an HD2, but of course, the phone is a year old already, and smartphones are now getting 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, and dual core processors.
Before long, the HD2 is going to be out of date.
Personally, the most attractive aspect of the HD2 to me is how incredibly hackable it is. If I were to upgrade, I would hope whatever phone I upgrade to would have several OSes available to use too (as opposed to just several derivatives of the same OS).

Hit the nail on the head there brother!
The HD7 is a minor temptation, but after playing with a Mozart I found that there is no connecting to a hidden network, or as a mass storage device. A shame as everything else is very nice in WP7.
So I am keeping my eye out for hot deals on HD2's
Edit: Forgot about the non-removeable/expandable storage in WP7 (I have 32Gb in my HD2)
probably getting sensation for daily driver but will be saving this HD2 because its superphone over anything, probably ever because of OS possibilities.
If there doesnt come any other better phones than sensation I will be getting it when it releases.

this or the htc sensation, im tempted to save the money and buy an s2 with the tegra 2 chip. It seems like tegra 2 will be widely supported and it'll have games optimised for it also it may lead to the phone being cracked faster.
For me there realy isnt any phone that beats HD2 (still). Im a WM6.1 ,WM6.5.x fanboy. the only hing that I miss at HD2 is harwware keyboard. but other then that it still is the perfect phone in my opinion. I never oliked phones that you get bored of quickly. HD2 has alot of development going on xda. you can have numerous OSes running on it. It never gets boring. I probably will not change my phone before there is realy something special (no, galaxy S 2 isnt special enough ).
At the moment I'm still torn between different OS's(ssssss). I've been warming to WinPho 7, but after reading over on Pocket Now about some of the things that might STILL be missing even after the Mango update later this year, I don't think I can wait. http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/windows-phone-7-mango-the-missing-features No smart dialing, no flash support in the browser? What on earth are Microsoft doing?
Having said I can't wait for Microsoft to get their act together, if I could stick a super LCD in my HD2 and a better camera sensor, I would happily keep it for another year or two until quad core chips are out and are selling at reasonable money.
The Sensation will be such a rip-off SIM-free here in the UK this summer I couldn't bring myself to buy one; there'll be much better and more efficient hardware out by the end of '11, beginning '12 ; )
G2x
Stock Android
Tegra Dual Core
4g
Supports a WIDE range of spectrums and supports ATT 3g along with T-Mobile's 4g and 3g
All screen and no keyboard.
It's literally future proof (since ATT will be eating Tmobile soon)
The SGS2 looks better than the Sensation in terms of specs?

[Q] Is there life after HD2?

Well!!!
I'm a HD2 user from November 2009 which means it's almost 2 years old.
For a phone that's quit old. Now I'm running Mango on it and I also had many android versions running on it. I really love this device.
Now comes my problem!!
I want to buy a new phone but I want the same phone which can run many OS.
Should I wait until the Eternity or will there be another "über"-Phone (über = German for Gorgeous/great/Master/better then ever/beyond everything else)?
I think you all know what I mean. The HD2 is just great and I want something similar again.
What do you think???
Regards, Martijn
I suggest waiting a few more months (or years?) for the HTC Holiday .. it seems to be the device of its decade
i have my hd2 also since it was released and i think that i will wait until the quadcore chips come to phones. i can live with the hd2 at the moment and i think buying a dualcore device now isn't worth it when quadcores are announced for the mid of next year. maybe i'll buy a cheap used phone inbetween to play with but not a new high end device.
LMAO.
I just bought an HD2. And for the same reason you don't want to leave it.
I want to experience everything I can. You can't do that with any phone.
Lucky me than, im going to buy HD2 tomorrow
There is no real upgrade in my opinion. The only signifcant upgrade I reckon is in battery life, front cam, a slighty better rear cam and perhaps screen quality.
I have had; Desire, Desire HD, Legend and now Nexus S. They are all so similar to HD2 it feels cool for the first day and then you realize there was really no point in upgrading.
Sansung GS II is the biggest upgrade IMO, but then you are stuck on a stock ROM

If you're going to think like that then might as well wait for the 8 core phones instead of buying a quad core phone.
Well but they are Not manufactured yet. The kal el is done and working. And if you Upgrade and some month later there is such better Hardware available you'll also get angry. The difference between our hd2 and a dual core device is Not that big. At the Moment the hd2 is still pretty up to date. I know very well that waiting for the next good thing to come out would never end when we Talk about smartphones or Computers. There is just no really big fish out at the Moment like the hd2 was in 2009. So i for myself will wait for quadcores and 720p Displays because this will be worth the Upgrade from the hd2.
Unfortunately, I think the HD2 was unique with all the possibilities and hacking and the great developers coming together at one time. I've been watching and waiting for the next great phone, but I think that when the HD2 finally fades away, there won't be another phone with the same abilities because of the lack of developers focused on it. I just don't know what I'll do, I guess I'll actually have to decide on an Android or WP7 phone (but I really really like being able to jump between the two with just a reboot)!
If you can't wait there's been a bit of buzz around the Xiaomi M1 phone - supposedly able to run multiple OS's.
Feel free to shoot me down in flames if I've mis-interpreted the description of it.

It cannot run multiple OS's, but it is a very awesome looking phone. It is basically an Android modder's dream if the development is there, but only Android. It won't ever run WM or WP

true. this could really be a cheap option to get a phone were some great developement could go on. we'll see how good it really will be. this price is pretty cheap for a phone with such hardware. hope it won't be cheap china crap.
but somehow i'm missing the flash and front facing cam.

It's using a 1.5 ghz snapdragon/adreno with 1GB ram SoC so you know the raw specs are freaking amazing.
What I want to see is how good the screen is and how good the code is. They are making a bad-ass phone with a stock-custom ROM (if that makes sense), it would be like HTC releasing a phone running stock CM7 on it or something.
If there is custom ROM support for this thing like CM7 and stuff I might get it.
i know the phone thanks. but build quality has to be good.

yeah hopefully they don't use crap plastic like samsung.
even at the size and weight, with those kind of specs
i will definitely be getting 1 just for the heck of testing and flashing
with CM7, hell yeah definitely my go to phone
That phone looks like the first iPhone.
Anyway I'm very happy with my HD2.
by the way is this just a nice render or nearby future.

Lol @ it runs a discontinued OS
Well i think there is not one out there that can replace the HD2. Why change a winner with a posible expencive new one. If your phone will break, it wil only cost you 150-200 Euro to replace.
depends where you live. here i have to pay still 400 euro to get a new one.
