My WiFi has suddenly stopped connecting to hotspots. It works just fine at home but for some reason it won't connect to the Starbucks next door to my work. Any help would be greatly appreciated

try downloading the advanced wifi configurator. or when u connect, go to your browser and accept the terms and conditions (usually hotspots have a simple page that lists the conditions, once u accept you will be able to use the internet)

What r u running on your phone at the moment, ROMS or Sony Ericsson firmware? That will help me and others what your problem is.

I'm using wolfbreak CM 6.1.3 v06. The only problem is that my WiFi symbol doesn't show up & when I go in the browser it doesn't take me to the page to accept the terms. So I use my data from my ATT plan. Sometimes it works & sometimes I keep seeing a pop-up saying WiFi autofix when I can't connect

Do u blade wifi fix on your ROM?
that might work.
Also, have u tried connecting through the wifi part of settings and search for a new connection. This might seem dumb bit try that. Not just letting the phone connect itself.

I do have the blade WiFi fix. I've tried connecting every way possible but still no luck. It now shows the WiFi icon in my status bar & it also says I'm connected to the Starbucks WiFi but when I open the browser it says I'm not connected.

so when you go to settings>wireless & networks>wifi settings, is the box next to wifi checked? and if yes does it show any available networks? If its off how does it respond when you check the box to turn it on. More details would help people solve your problem.
If its just turned off and you need to turn it back on manually everytime just put a power control widget on one of your home screens to turn it off/on easier.

wifi is turned on on my phone. when i got into wifi settings and look at the available access points, it says im connected to the starbucks hotspot. but when i open my browser(default browser, firefox) it says page cannot be displayed cuz i aint connected. ive tried everything i can think of. ive turned off the wifi then turned it back on, rebooted the phone, tried different settings. i just dont know why it wont connect to the starbucks hotspot next door to my work anymore. it works perfectly fine at home.
Thanks for all the help but I figured out it is the Starbucks that has the problem. I can't connect my ipod or laptop. I'm just happy its not my phone. But thanks again for all the tips

I have the stock Android 2.1 on my phone and I rooted it but nothing else. For some reason my phone will not connect to my home WiFi. I put in the WEP key and it still says disconnected. Not sure if root had anything to do with it since I only assumed WiFi was working before I rooted. Any ideas? WEP is right, not sure what the "Key Index" is...

Is your router setup to only allow N connections? If so, the default wifi is only for G and B networks unless you have updated the kernel.
Could it be because you're a dirty gator? Sorry, I know that's not helpful, please forgive me. Go Noles!!!

Harrison, I am certain that's not the problem.

I hit connect but the status under the WiFi setting never changes from disconnected.

Well first of all root def.ly is not the reason. I would try a few things such as reboot the phone and router. Next I would try to disable the security on the router just for testing. see if you can connect without any key. Also try connecting to an open Wifi connection that is available. This open would narrow down your problem to either the phone or your home network. If you are able to connect to other wifi connection then the issue is not with the phone but your home network.
Mine seems to not want to connect to the wifi until I go into Settings - Wifi, then suddenly it decides my wireless router is there and connects. The only other app on my phone that can activate the wireless radio is Wifi Analyzer, but I have that feature turned off.
Anyone else download quick settings and notice LED flashlight and wifi tethering work?
Edit: Apparently while SSID does broadcast wifi tethering doesn't provide internet access.

Does it really??? Post a pic or vid
Pic 1 - LED Flashlight
Pic 2 - Quick Settings Enable Hotspot
Pic 3 - Click Hotspot to set Access Point
Pic 4 - Access Point seen by my laptop
Good find!
Not quite perfect yet, though. I was able to turn on the Hotspot and connect, but unfortunately I couldn't actually connect to the internet from my laptop once I was connected.
tried it, didn't work, nice fake though...
Not sure which part I'm "Faking". You have to go to settings and change flashlight to LED instead of screen, for access point if you're using windows 7 make sure its set as a home network not public and try changing the SSID name.

Running Vista, I connect fine to the phone, but nothing is routed beyond the phone unfortunately. Look forward to seeing this work, though. Nice simple fix to an annoying limitation.

Sorry, I take back what I said. I thought you were faking the pics for wifi by using another phone. on another note, linux does not see the wifi tether. but win 7 does. very odd...
I tried connecting my computer to the hotspot but the phone doesn't give out an IP address and there aren't settings on the phone to change it. Seems like tmobile change the stock build, eh?

Are you actually able to get onto the internet on Windows 7? Or just connect to the hotspot? My only Windows 7 computer Doesn't have Wifi, so I have no easy way to test that.
I can't connect to the internet either tried a few things but you're right nothin comes through, ah well I was more excited about the flashlight anyways

just connect to the hotspot, the phone does not give out an ip
as for the LED flashlight the Power Control plus widget lets you do that, I would have said something earlier but thought it was common knowledge.

Great find. You can actually download nexus one led flashlight from the market. It comes with a handy widget for turning the led on or off. That will take care of having to open quick settings to switch between screen flashlight or led flashlight.

when connected to the wifi on your phone do an ipconfig /all on computer, and post results for wireless network adapter
Perhaps you have to check APN type under mobile networks.
My nexus one shows "default, supl,MMS" (no quoation nor spaces)

So internet sharing and DHCP are disabled as well.
I'll have to check out quick settings. I tried wifi tether for root with no luck. Saw some errors in the logcat for missing files, but think they are missing on my G1 too. I haven't dug too much into it yet.

Remember the wifi tether for root won't work until this device gets rooted. Try a hotspot app and see if the connected devices can surf the internet.

I rooted my buddies epic today and installed wifi tether and we couldn't get it to work. The app was granted su permission and turns on, but no PC or other wifi phones can find it. Any ideas? Trying to leave him on a stock rooted rom because he has no idea what's going on. Thanks.

Wireless Tether from the market doesn't work, you'll need a different version. Uninstall the one from the market and install the latest one from here (pre11 works for sure, but the newer ones should also): http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list

Try turning on access control and add the computer to it. That's always worked for me.
Sent from the fastest phone in the galaxy
I think your issue is that Wireless Tether creates an ad-hoc network, and most (if not all?) Android devices cannot connect to ad-hoc networks (at least without some work). It's working fine, just the Evo cannot connect to it. You would need a laptop or something else. As suggested, try MobileAP, since it works in infrastructure mode.
I pulled the .apk file from the syndicate rom and that one worked with no issues at all.
Attached are the files I used. I put them on my SD card and installed. Up and running with no issues.
This is what you gotta do.. get it all installed and open it... then hit "menu" followed by "access control" ...when that page pops up, at the top right corner there's a box that's unchecked... check that box... now trn on the tether, alow a minute for the computer to pick it up then try to connect... when it pops up it'll show "androidtether" as the name... connect to it... at this point it'll ask your phone for permission, so slide down the statusbar and click on the little image that pops up... it'll take you back to the "access control" page and beside where the computer just showed up, click the little box and it should start tethering at that point... hope that helps...
Note: these steps are for the apps listed in post #2 that you download from google.

You might check your router to see if you have access control enabled. I have frequently found that to be the cause when a new item refuses to otherwise connect. First check login, password, then the router permissions. Be sure to recycle your router if changes are made.
