Hello all!
Has anyone managed to get their Transformer to read NTFS formatted storage? I formatted a Micro SD card in NTFS and the device wouldn't read it, but in the back of the Transformer manual (page 35), it says "Tuxera software provides support for NTFS format". A quick look at the Tuxera website revelas that they make drivers for Andriod systems to read NTFS
Thanks!
Oh, man, you just made me jumped! I have been searching and asking about NTFS support in the Transformer, as I would really need to be able to connect my external HDD (which is formatted with NTFS). Without that NTFS support, pretty much that USB port is not fully working for me.
Now, with your info from the Transformer user manual, it gives a big hope that it does support NTFS.
Anyone with a Transformer, can you guys confirm that it will read NTFS formatted HDD?
My Seagate Go Flex 2.5 inch 1 TB USB 3.0 drive works great on the dock. Also my Micro SD in an Sd Adapter. Both with NTFS
From what I've read only the USB ports and the card reader built into the dock will support NTFS-formatted drives.
I believe that when it comes to the internal MicroSD, it explicitly expects this to be in FAT32 format, but the device itself does support NTFS for other media - it certainly reads all my NTFS formatted hard drives.
Regards,
Dave
It won't mount microSD cards automatically if they're not FAT32, but you can mount them manually if you have root.
To mount:
mkdir /data/Removable/MicroSD
mount /dev/block/vold/179\:9 /data/Removable/MicroSD
To unmount:
umount /dev/block/vold/179\:9
rm -r /data/Removable/MicroSD
The other contents of the vold directory refer to the SD card slot and the 2 USB slots.

Hi, where should I enter the code you provided?
I've tried entering the script in Terminal Emulator, but get
"Usage: mount [-r] [-w].... etc.."
This means there's something wrong with the code?

MicroSD = FAT32.
USB Harddrive = NTSF (3 usb HDD's with NTSF formatted work fine with my TF101).
Hope this may help.

Everything I'm reading says you have to mount it manually through terminal. My question is: Do you have to do this every time you boot or once you mount it manually will it stay mounted through reboots? I would think the latter based on what I've seen of Linux but would like to know for certain. I have a 32GB micro SD being delivered in, oh, the next hour or so.

I have a
Western Digital 3TB Mybook Essential USB 3.0 External HDD
The problem is, that the A500 will not accept this drive connected via USB.
Do anyone have an ida with such a large HDD.
A 2TB HDD has no problem.
Is the drive formatted as fat32?
size is not the issue
Depends on format. If you do not have root access, the USB drive is only mountable if it is FAT/FAT32 file system. If it's NTFS you will need root and a external app (I use Drive Mount, free from market) to be able to use said external HDD

Hmmmm. Can you hook it up to your PC and check it's properties? What format is it even in?
The drive mount tool shows the drive, but "mount all" fails?
Does the drive actually work on a USB2 port?
over 2,19TB needs Advanced Format
Hi,
I read in one of the computer magazines that MBR (master boot record) only works for drives up to 2.19TB in size, bigger requires this new Advanced Format Support . Win7 SP1 includes this by defauilt I believe. Could be the case for the Iconia that the size is simply too big and that this AF is not (yet) supported ...
just my2 cents,
Marcher

Yes it works without a problem on a USB2 port on my PC
When you connect to pc does it shows like 2 drivers letters or only 1, if shows 2 that's your problem there is utility on wd site how to reconfigure to show 1 drive.

If it is formatted NTFS and you have a stock A500 that is your problem. You need to format it as a FAT32 drive. You cannot do this through drive management in Windoze 7 (as far as I know) - you need to use a third party application or root your A500 and perform the necessary mods.
Once you root, you can use this.
I had success with the following utility and my 500GB NTFS-formatted external:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13337600&postcount=6
Hope this helps.
NTFS is the norm for External Hard Drives
External Hard Drives all come formatted NTSF. FAT32 is only used on thumb drives less than 16GB large. A file cannot be larger than 4GB on a FAT32 formatted drive and seeing how there are many files(VOB, ISO, MP4) that are larger than 4GB, most people don't think to format their drives to FAT32. If you have a Windows PC you can use an easy program you can find HERE to format your hard drive to FAT32
Ran into a similar problem with my new 1TB WD Passport.
Drive mount sees it and mounts it, but then I don't see the drive contents in root explorer.

Have you checked all the directories under /mnt? I haven't had an issue, just tested with a 1TB as well.

I use WD 1TB HDD that's formated in NTFS and it does have the virtual drive as when mounted on PC there are two drives mounted.
However I have no problem to mount it on my A500 using the DriveMount. From memory it mounted as sd1(?) under /mnt/...
Just stick the cable to A500 USB port and click the mount all.
I tryed all what here was suggested.
I also splitted the drive in an 2 TB and a 1TB partition.
NTSF-Mount recognized this but didn't mount the two drives.
Has anybody other experiences?

I tried drive mount and ntsf mount. Drive mount recognize the drive but do not mount. ntsf mount sometimes mount the drives (I think when i start the pad the last 10 minutes) and do not mount when I plug in the drive.
I use the "[ROM] Honeycomb 3.1 - HoneyVillain 1.05 with 2.5 Kernel)
With 3 TB I had no chance to mount. With splitting it seems that ther are some possibilities but I didnt know at this time what really happens.
I know that external storage of SD card is limited to Fat 32 and the max size is around 4 GB. What about internal storage? Can I transfer a 6 - 8 GB movie file onto the internal storage of the 7.7 ?
I have the Playbook and I can certainly put a 6-8 GB movie in it.

easy

to overcome the fat32 limitation you can format the sdcard to EXT4 and then copy anysize you want to it
all our phones by default can read linux partitions and fat partitions
if you are running Linux as your desktop PC you would not have any problem copying & pasting files to and from the phone
if you are a windows guy, just install the add-on for windows to read Ext2 partitions

Eeeexcelent!! I shall have to get an EXT2/3/4 driver for my Win7 box and re-format my 64GB SD!
or just install linux in a virtual box inside windows
then use the VM USB pass through so when you plug it into the PC it will automatically mount on the virtual Linux box

After I run the above program, I don't know what to do next.
All I want to do is able to transfer my 6 GB .mkv movie file to my SD card so that I can either view it on my Galaxy Note or the Galaxy Tab 7.7.
How do I go about doing this? Is there a simple tutorial guide to using the above application? Do I use it to format my micro SD card? Will it work for a 64 GB card?
The internal galaxy tab 7.7 can take any kinf of file, it dont have de 4gb limitation, but the external sdcard is not readable if formatted in ext4, i have try it and the tab say that the sd is corrupted. I repeat GALAXY TAB 7.7 WITH HONEYCOMB CAN`T READ EXT4 FORMATTED MICRO SD

You need use "drive mount" to mount a ext4-formatted sd card.
You can get it from android market. It's free apk.
Here are some of my experience:
1:I use gparted live cd to format my sd card.
2:ext2fsd as windows ext driver.
3:"Drive mount" to mount ext4-formatted sd card on tab 7.7.
What is the difference between EXT2 and EXT4 ? Which one should I formated into in order to be able to put 6 GB video file on the microSD card?

After finding exfat files in the filesystem I formatted my external sd as exfat and the phone recognized and used it with no problems.
I am currently backing up my internal sd card to do the same
Note doing a format from storage settings still uses fat32 so format the card in a computer or unmount the card in the phone and use a adb shell to run
mkfs.exfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
after backing it up since you are formatting.

of course it would, Microsoft created exfat.
I'd love to switch to exFAT for its advantages, but I just know if I switched to it, I would have to go back to FAT32 when I use CyanogenMod, namely due to the fact that you have to get patent licenses and crap from Microsoft to be able to implement exFAT, which I assume Samsung must hold so they can use it on their phones and TVs.
What we really want is MTP fully working on Linux and for the internal and external SD cards to be in EXT2/4 or something like that, and then it would keep both Windows and Linux users happy and we would have better file size support and performance.
That's my 2 cents.

I know that would be great if it happened. I know before I realized exfat worked I had mine ext4 and used a app to mount it but it had little drawbacks that this native support fixes.
Plus now I can connect my digital camera to my phone via OTG since it has a 64GB sdxc card that uses exfat which is another major plus. I always hated being out and not able to get my photos off it and passed out to other people until I got home and to a computer.
I am having issues with the following setup on my Nexus 7. I have the eForCity Micro USB OTG to USB 2.0 Adapter and the elago Mobile Nano I USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader. I have tried two microSD cards, one 32gb and one 64gb and I am unable to copy files to the card using both Root Explorer and ES File Explorer. It says that the copy failed. I have tried formatting the as exFat, NTFS and FAT32 and no luck. Anyone out there experience this?
Thank you in advance,
BD6675
You're missing a piece of the puzzle. If rooted, you should install Stickmount, which mounts external storage using the OTG Usb cable. I use it to read/write and stream media from a 32Gb microsd card using FAT32. Some custom kernels or roms natively support mounting, but I'm just stock, rooted, 4.2.1.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am rooted and I was already using Stickmount. I am able to mount both the 32gb and 64gb cards and see the content on them and access the content on them but I can not copy anything to either card when connected to the Nexus 7. Any other things I can try?
It appears that I need to have the card formatted to FAT32 in order to be able to copy to the card from the Nexus 7. Does this sound correct or is there a way to get the card formatted to NTFS or exFAT?
Some custom kernels and custom roms support NTFS, but I'm just using FAT32 which works perfectly unless you need support for files over 4Gb. Easiest way to get it to work is to just format your storage with FAT32.

this is correct. android reads, but doesn't support writing to NTFS or exFAT natively. some kernels add ntfs-g, which does give you write access, but it's buggy at best.
Resolved: by switching to the custom ROM Buttered AOKP 4.2.2 [+Aroma] and using its the default kernel. The OTG connected SDCards formatted as either ext4 or FAT32 was automatically mounted with RW accessable. Stickmount was not required. It seems odd that the neither the popular SentinelROM/KTManta nor Tasker650/Trinity Ten custom ROM/kernels would mount the same ext4 formatted SD cards.
I am running custom ROM/Kernel combination Tasker650 TX34 and Trinity Ten. Using gparted I can format an external SD card with FAT32 or NTFS and the SD card is automatically mounted by the N10. Settings->Storage can mount and unmount the OTG connected storage without issue.
If I reformat the SD card as ext4 it is not auto mounted but Settings->Storage does show a "Mount USB" button. Unfortunately clicking on it causes the SD card reader's light to flash but the file structure never show up in "/usbdisk". Note: I have the same problem with "SentinelROM and KTManta".
What is strange is that TWRP can see and mount the ext4 formatted SD card without issue from a "/usb-otg" mount point. File browsing the SD card also works but only in TWRP.
I tried from a terminal session to mount it manually:
> busybox mount -t ext4 -o nosuid,nodev /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /storage/usbdisk
but it always return the error that "/dev/block/mmcblk1p1" does not exist which is true.
From everything I've read ext2,3,4 formatted SD cards should all be recognized. I am looking to load files greater than 4GB and have full RW access to the SD card. NTFS can accommodate the file size but is limited to Read-Only access.
Maybe the mount point is different for ext4 formatted SD cards but I can't find that mount point. If anyone can shed some light on this issue I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Doug
