A black lettered day in my life ....
Today in the morning while riding on my motorbike on a croweded indian street ...my phone slipped out of my tracks & fell on to the road. It took me about a ~45 secs to realize that my phone is missing from my pocket
By the time i parked my bike & looked back i saw some people frantically waving & shouting trying to stop an oncomming city bus... & then i heard someone say the phone is under the BUS !!!
I ran towards the bus ( which had now come to a stop ) & peeked underneath & to my horror realized that that bus had actually come to a stop on TOP of my phone !!!!! My heart surely missed a beat ..had to ask the driver to back the bus to dislodge the phone from under the tire
Well here are the pics :
http://s1046.photobucket.com/albums/b462/wonderboyfarhan/A journey cut short/
Video :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYAJBVfe9to
The phone surprisingly is still in working condition despite being compeltely shattered .. i can still make calls, touchscreen is working (even in the broken areas)... GPS, compass, camera all seem to be working fine....i guess had it not been in the leather pouch it would have been much worse
PLease tell me this can be reparied/replaced...also could you please give a cost approximate..
Heres wat i think needs replaching
- Touch Panel
- Glass Front Screen
- Plastisc side body

True ..its just hard to see ur hard earned money go down the drain like dat !
I too am amazed that the phone still managed to survie this ...i was expecting it find X10 mash inside the leather cover...!! The battery has deep lines engraved on it by the ribs on the back cover .due to the pressure !!!!!
Can't believe it's still working, anyway i guess you wont think about 2.1 update anymore which is, hmmmm, a good thing
That's too bad for you, it's a really expensive phone.
I don't know if you can get the parts apart around your place, but here are the part numbers:
LCD Display: 1223-6264
Windows + Touchscreen: 1223-6264
and finding the housing shouldn't be too hard.
Perhaps you can try contacting SE, but I doubt they'll send you the parts.
Do you really need the touch panel as it is still working? The LCD and touch panel are different parts, you know.
If I were you, I will contact SE and show them what their phone got!.
May be ask them a replacement as a reward from your unbelievable story.
Your phone might worth making a nice ads for them

And then sell it on eBay to buy 2 X10s
(yes, people will pay that much)
I don't know about SE in India but you should give it a shot for making some ads if you got time. At least you have nothing to loose.
Sorry for your lose.
PS, if you had the white color x10 then the bus driver would have seen it just saying!

Can u pls post the pic link again? The link is dead
Ouch, that looks pretty bad, but besides the screen, battery, and a new case, it seems ok. Does everything still work?
I.e. making phone calls, earpiece, microphone, camera, wi-fi, 3G, etc.?

I also did manage to break the touch panel of my White X10 accidentally! And it seems it would cost around 33% of the phones price! I can't post the links yet! But i've just few lines of crack on my touch panel and it my phone doesn't respond to touch anymore! It's unbelievable that your works!
Let me know what SE quoted you for the Touch Panel!
Did you thank the bus?
Now you can get a phone with current tech, like multi touch, better battery, better call volume, etc

Subscribing lol
holy crap, already? Subscribed...
would love it if you could check to see if you see the nand chip (probably a square flat pc, soldered on one of the boards) and if it sez "SEM04G" or "SEM02G" on it
that would resolve the issue on internal memory
also if you can take a shot of what is serving as a spring on the Z hinge -

not necessarily - in fact I believe there has to be a spring employed - take your phone, hold it so either end is facing straight down (not one of the long edges down) -
then open the screen all the way, start to bring it back like you're closing it, and about 1/3rd of the way from full open, a spring brings it across the center point and nearly to the 1/3rd from fully closed position. No gravity in effect there -
probably isn't much of a spring, but it doesn't need much - a flat strip of plastic that the end of the hinge rubs against and bows out as the screen travels toward the center of it's open/close arc. at the center of that arc would be the max point of bow.
there's another way to do it, but with the limitation in depth, that's how i suspect their doing it - i could be wrong on the 'how' part, but there is a spring capturing energy from the screen as you open it - as the above demo proves
Well, if we can get proof that it's not a 4GB chip like T-Mobile's claiming, they won't be able to refuse returns/exchanges.

Pretty sure the design is based on pendulum swing.
Salute for this astonishing attempt
One hinge is easy the other is not. The one up with the copper strip (which must be pealed to reveal another screw) is a *****. The mobo is very thin. Will try again tomorrow after I have fun upgrading vCenter servers at work.

Sorry, I've been saying I would post this for a while now.
It's not as thorough as it could be but it's a start.
Ask questions and contribute to it (pictures most welcome) to improve on it.
Also this doesn't go through the full process of replacing the digitizer, but hopefully you can work it out. Again, if anyone wants to contribute a more thorough guide on doing this they are most welcome to.
Cheers man
Awesome stockwell. Much appreciated. Looks easy enough. Now i can replace my cracked screen.
Now to find someone on ebay to buy it off.
Thanks stockwell. I was looking forward to seeing it I will try to open my broken u8800 tomorrow.
nice post stockwell.
If I had this tutorial in the beginning of September it would have saved me €60 from official repair.
I could do the repair easily myself, but I didn't know how to remove the upper part of the housing, near the camera and I was afraid of damaging even more. And looks so easy
Thanks Stockwell !
Thanks .. I have passed it my self last friday.. have you noticed the small plastic between the sim and sd card.. it holds the rj connection.
Just reminder, after battery cover and battery you should remove camera cover as it hold two from six screws.. always take care..
Finally, my device is u8800h

I like the sushi mat backdrop!
There isn't anywhere in there that could be an HDMI connection is here, what's behind the cover beside the volume switch? How about JTAG?
Thanks stockwell.
I've been wondering about this for some time now because I got some dust on the inside screen and I wanted to clean it up. I know that I might lose the warranty but it's all good. The phone it's cheap anyways.
Jtag, yeah! Can we see what happens with fm radio? Any trace to indicate is connected?

Lol it was either the sushi mat or my VB bar mat.
There are a group of test points which you can actually get to by pulling out the little rubber stopper near the sim card tray, which to me screamed JTAG when I saw them. There's a little moisture activated warranty sticker covering them as well.
I can't really see a place for a HDMI connector, certainly not near the volume rocker.
HDMI is too far fetched.thx for the guide mate.

Bluetooth antenna
Is the Bluetooth antenna visible and does it look as if there any hope of improving the signal strength by either removing metallic bits nearby or something. I am seriously unimpressed by the signal strength - compared to my Nokia N95 for example.
I cannot use my BT headset if the device is in my trouser pocket, and even if I put the phone in a shirt pocket the signal drops out if I turn my head to one side.
With the Nokia, it is rock solid.
Thanks for that. I'm planning to open my U8800 tonight.
It went into the water and now half of the touchscreen is not working anymore

It was a bit long because I was extremely careful when detaching the back cover. I use something like a credit card to unlock it.
It seems a condensator has fried near the touchscreen controller. I'll buy a new one.

2nd edit :
just bought item on third link, will post about it when i get it
Take a look at this article:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...our-email-while-riding-has-never-been-easier/
finally... i got it
so first to be honest i was expecting it to be a bit smaller. really check all the measures before buying. but i fixed it with just putting out that part for angle adjustment and cutted of what was too much of screw, and now it's ok but as much as i was looking on ebay they're all like that
second thing is that part that is holding phone get quite easily off the part, that is attached to bike, wich can cause your phone to fall, but i just simply glued it together
so bottom line is for low price you know what you get
I just bought this one from ebay, after almost one month waiting it is realy cool: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200806586674
Any of you boght that mount holder can answer a question. Is possible with that holder to record video from phone? And if it is possible to turn the angle (horizontal and / or vertical) of the holder.

I am not sure if all of them will come with the headset bundled in. I remember that with Xperia Z it was a hit and miss situation and that some carriers included it and others didn't.

I have a screen review coming up any minute now on youtube. To my suprise it seems that I have a yellow hue on Xperia Z1 and it looks inferior to my Xperia Z
I am gonna head to the Sony Center tommorow to see if I can replace the device. I am in the process of uploading the video right now.
The contents of the box seems to differ between regions, for example, in Sweden and France the DK31 magnetic charger is included in the packaging, and also included in French boxes (and not the Swedish ones) is the MH750 wired headset. Just google "xperia z1 site:shop.sonymobile.com" and look at the contents in different regions.
For example, in boxes destined for the UK the contents are:
EP880 Charger
EC801 Media Cable
MH750 Wired headset
ET970 Screen Protector
...presumably there is also an Xperia Z1 in there as well.

The glass on the front has a shatter proofing protector on which has the Sony logo imprinted on it. Apparently it gets scratched up easily so I would advice applying another screen protector on. The shatter proofing protector can be removed but I have heard stories that it may void your warranty (a guy in Sony Center Poland said it doesn't and that you can easily remove it).
When it comes to the back of the phone from what I have managed to find out, it is also covered in some antiglare layer. So it is the bit that is gonna get scratched up first.
Other than that it is all tempered glass so once you get to the glass it shouldn't scratch
