I have rooted about 5 different mytouch 4g with gfree, but last one bricked on me and couldnt be recovered. all kind of recovery mounting errors, and some people might think it is something to do with gfree method.
I just got a new mytouch 4g, and like to ask which is prefered method amound you guys. difficulty level doesnt mean much, because i know what i am doing
please let me know

This is the method I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021. It uses Visionary, so if gfree has been giving you problems, this is a good alternative.
ALL the methods use VISIONary. They pretty much follow this pattern:
1. Temproot using VISIONary
2. Run a script
3. Permroot using VISIONary
I would say gfree is better than the root.sh one becuase gfree can do much more, like unlock your SIM and carrierID. The only difference between the two is which script you run (gfree or root.sh).
Also, using root.sh puts the engineering bootloader on your device. If you use gfree, you have to manually flash the engineering bootloader. What that is and what it does is left for another discussion.

This depends on which root.sh script method you use. Typically most of them do not install the engineering screen.
I've used the root.sh method, ./gfree method and Cyanogen(mod)'s. If you are new to android try TheUnlockr's root.sh method. If you are familiar with ADB use the ./gfree. you can always add the ./gfree later once you are ready to use ADB.
I used the gfree method & been wrkin fine with me flashed iced glacier,cm7,back to iced glacier & now royalginger...1st mytouch 4g I got was wrkin fine until I flashed a ginger rom then bck to froyo & forgot to change recoveries & got that whole cnt mount cache & data errors but it was user error,other than that 3 mytouch 4gs using gfree & all wrks well...
I just finally rooted a few days ago, and did it using the Unlockr method, which is via Visionary. Worked great for me, and I'm not horribly tech savvy (compared to some at least lol).

If you rooted using Unrevoked 3.21 there is a thread listed in Android Development explaining the process as well as the needed links to download the needed zip files to turn S-On and the zip file to restore back to Stock Froyo 2.2

Ok but there are still methods in the forum for unrooting just like how you rooted. I would just do a search for them and choose which one you feel is the easiest for you to understand. Also if you are getting another EVO unrevoked 3.21 is as many in here have said easy peasy for rooting.

One thing to check first: do you have S-OFF? This would be the case if you ever ran Unrevoked Forever or Unrevoked 3.21. If so, you'll need to flash the Unrevoked Forever S-ON tool from recovery before running the RUU.

Thx guys I never used unrevok just toast methods but how do u check the A-on thing & should it be on or off
Also this 1 guy on this forum said he used the ruu & had s-on/off but Sprint still found out he rooted so should I wipe that ex--- >#366# stuff too?

Reboot into the bootloader (turn phone off, then hold power+volume down until it comes on). Then look at the end of the first line.
If it says SHIP S-ON, you're good.
If it says SHIP S-OFF, you need to run the Unrevoked tool.
If it says ENG S-OFF (which should be the case if you used Toast's method), it is indeterminate.
However, if you never used Unrevoked at all, you shouldn't have to worry about it. You can check after you run the RUU, which will reset it to the SHIP bootloader.
I believe the 3.29 RUU resets everything, including the PRI. Toast's method downgraded the PRI, and it was difficult to get it back before the current update, so this used to be a sure-fire way of telling whether you had rooted. Unless you had a bad Wimax flash and broke your 4G, I *think* you should be OK. But I don't know for sure.

I just unrooted mine last night and it only took me 5 mins, just flash the unrevoked and then do the update on the PC36IMG and thats it.
Ok I got my G2 when it first came out. Used the old rage method to get S-OFF and perma root. Now i'm reading people say that they have "real" S-OFF and real permaroot. Do I have to do the "gfree" method now or is my phone good as it is?
I understand that with gfree you can unlock your SIM and you can switch between S-OFF and S-ON.. I'd like to have those functions. How should I go about it? Do I do a factory reset to go back to stock and unroot and then use gfree method or is there a simpler way to do it?

Since you have root and a stock rom installed, just run gfree -- that is ALL you need to do. The advantage, aside from unlocking the radio, is that with the proper s-off, there is some new security for the radio... for unbricking and for being able to withstand accidental OTA updates. A true radio s-off can take an OTA update containing BOTH an SPL and a Radio, and yet s-off remains.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. How do i go about just running gfree?

Well I'm rooted with the old method as well but because I I cant flash cwm 3.x with the gree method. You need the eng hboot so ill stick with the old method until clockwork makes it work with the gfree method.

See the Wiki for details. Assuming you are running a kernel where gfree works (again, see the Wiki on this), you just need a root shell on your phone, copy gfree to your phone (e.g. via adb push), then run gfree with the appropriate options, e.g. "./gfree -f".

Using gfree does not get rid of the engineering hboot (or modify your existing hboot in anyway), so it's safe to do. And even if this was not the case, you can still flash the CWM3 recovery without the engineering hboot, only you'll have to use a different method than fastboot.

also, as far as OTA's go, you mean that if after i run gfree i will be able to apply the OTA without it unrooting my phone?

Not sure about Baconbits, check the Wiki for the list of kernels that are known not to work with gfree.
If you apply the OTA after unlocking with gfree, you will still lose root but you won't lose the S-OFF and other stuff from gfree.

Not just gfree on its own, but you will need to go through the steps of getting temp root then perm root, which does use gfree as part of it. It's all in the Wiki.

gfree does NOT root your phone. It UNLOCKS RADIO SECURITY -- permanently. You only run it ONCE, you NEVER have to run it again... EVER.
With UNLOCKED RADIO SECURITY, gaining root is TRIVIAL.
What gets root is RAGE or PSNEUTER.

Yeah but gfree is often used as part of the rooting process, so I can see why people associate gfree with rooting.
gfree might be run more than once on a phone as part of the process to lock in root, i.e. to defeat the NAND write protection. Even though it's only needed once to unlock the radio etc, you might run it other times if you need to root a stock ROM and updates to that ROM.
gfree can be used to unlock radio security, but it has other options too. Sorry but I think your reply might confuse more people than it helps.

I'm perm rooted! but I lost the ota update cause I was simi-brick how can I get the OTA update? do I have to to a factory reset?
You should get the OTA right away after restarting the phone, I know I did after going back to stock on just Saturday of this week. The first time I connected to the network it said an update was available and it was the OTA.
that hasnt happen and it need to hurry up!! lol

I rooted my phone using the method at theunlockr.com but I read somewhere not to root your phone that way because it does not get you true s-off? My phone says s-off and I have been flashing roms without problems so far, just curious after reading that. Anyone know if this is true?
Here is what I did:
open visionary, check "Set system r/w after root" on
run temproot
open terminal and entered:
su - got super user
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
That's what I used for rooting my first MT4G and didn't have any issues whatsoever so I don't see what's wrong with it. I used gfree second time and if I remember correctly your method was easier but gfree sim unlocks your phone to be used with different carriers.

Something like that. Using root.sh will put the engineering bootloader on your device and basically "forges" messages to HBoot when it asks the radio whether you have S-ON or S-OFF. You'll be able to flash ROMs and stuff.
The gfree script will actually give you radio S-OFF, as well as unlock your SIM and unlock your Carrier ID (SuperCID). You can still use it even if you already did the root.sh script, just follow the directions in that thread and ignore anything to do with VISIONary.
I've seen about 20 posts on how to root my Mytouch 4G, but I still can't do it! When I try and run SU, I get errors. However, I've managed to S=OFF, which I can't even imagine how. Here's what my boot screen is showing:

There seems to be a few different set of instructions, but none seem to be working. I've tried the VISIONary way, as well as the other methods.
if you are s=off with the .85 engineering screen all you need to do is download VISIONary.apk

I have the same screen as you with the eng bootloader.
When I do volume down + pwr I also get the boot screen and goes through a pd15img wrong image yada yada.... I thought that was normal????
However I have s off and su works for me in terminal.

The root methods follow this pattern:
1. Temproot with VISIONary
2. Run a script to get S-OFF (I recommend gfree for this)
3. Permroot with VISIONary
You have the Engineering bootloader (HBoot-0.85.2007), so I assume you used the root.sh script. Did you attempt permroot with VISIONary afterwards? That should be all you have to do (make sure to uncheck temproot on boot when you do).
Ignore that stuff about PD15IMG, that's normal. The bootloader is looking for a file on your sd card named PD15IMG.zip and isn't finding it. That zip file (which you can find on these forums) is used to revert back to stock.
If you have s-off all you have to do is temproot again, flash clockwork recovery, and flash away. My phone did same thing, once you get a recovery you're good to go.

the main gree thread also has a bootloader part which is what i used - he could have done that too, which is diff than root.sh. i think we dont really know how he got to where he is.
chicago- what i learned when i rooted is that gfree or your method just turns s=off. that's not rooting, it's just removing radio security so that you can then root- you still like neidlinger said have to then run visionary+ to do it again.
you run it once to let gfree or root.sh work, then you run it again to actually gain root. the only thing is that i would download visionary+ 11, as many instances have shown that 14 doesnt do the job on some phones. 11 is older, but seem to work more often. uninstall 14 and install 11.
just run it, make sure "set to rw" is checked, nothing else checked. make sure usb debugging is checked on your phone. than reboot again after running visionary, you should be ok. my 1st time i ran it, it hung. then i removed the battery, and in terminal i couldnt get su. i ran visionary+ 11 again, with the settings described, then rebooted, and boom, i was su.
Also make sure you don't have a PDIMG15.zip or whatever it's called on the root of your sdcard or that'll keep effing up with bootloader. And make sure "temproot on boot" isn't checked cause that kept screwing up my roots too. Following jdkoren's instructions should get the job done for you. Good luck!
yeah i forgot to also say the i get that looking for pdming whatnot when i boot into hboot, but i thought that was normal - looks like it always checks for a zip file it needs to restore stock, and when it doesnt find it on the SD root, it assumes you dont want to, or need to restore your phone, which is good.... one day when you need to restore, you could put that file on your sd card, reboot, and boom, it'll pick it up.
so, it's normal it seems.

Ok so i called t-mobile and they are sending me a replacement because of the bad screen on my phone. All in all i used a method from CM7 to root my phone. I dont remember what method it was. I remember that i had to downgrade my phone and then root from there.
I am trying to get S-on because i already flashed the PD15IMG and it didnt give me the s-on. it just keeps saying s-off. do i have to have s-on for the excahnge? i already have the phone with the stock rom without root.

If you used gfree you can run the script again restore S-ON if you still have the part7 backup files. If you don't have them, there is a thread around here somewhere that has the files with instructions to hex-edit your IMEI.
If you used root.sh, then you simply need to run unroot.sh
Edit: I came to the conclusion that if you looked and couldn't manage to find the gfree thread stickied at the top of the dev section that you would never find the thread about hex-editing part7backup. So here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195630

Go to the dev section and look at the gfree guide stickied there. It has steps to unroot and 5000 people asking questions when they run into snags during the process. Read until your eyes bleed, then read some more.

okay i have tried everything i could think of and i still cant figure this out!
the problem is that i flashed the PD15IMG via hboot and it put everything back to stock. now the problem is that S is still off and i need s-on to send it back for a replacement. i have tried re rooting the phone from the guide i posted above but i have had no success CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP!?
i have the stock rom that is GB but without root or anything i cant even get temp root! please help me!
If your on gingerbread (2.3) you'll have to downgrade back to 2.2.1 before you can run gfree to turn
S-on.
After turning S-on reflash a stock pd15.img and you'll be back to stock.
For more info read the rooting guide in the sticky section. I think its the one by grankin01. Its the one that says check this out even if your rooted.
