New radio? - EVO Shift 4G General

I presume an update to the radio has not been released yet. Please let me know if I'm wrong. If there has not been, I hope one is coming soon. I'm not impressed with the current radio. It seems as if it could use some tweeking to make it stronger. I have noticed that the wifi is kinda weak also. I can be 20 feet or so from my router and only show one "bar" on the wifi reception. I only get full reception if I'm within a few feet from the router. As far as the main/cdma radio strength, I do not get full signal even when I'm near the sprint tower not far from here.

I don't think anything new has been released for the shift, I did notice when I ran cm that my wifi sucked to say the least along with phone signal, I have ran mikshift since his beta release and I'm on v1.1 I get wifi all over even a couple houses down when I'm playing with my rc cars.

New Radio and battery life

I updated my radio earlier today to 2.42.00.03.10 and have PRL 60663. I am seeing a significant increase in battery life. Is anyone else seeing this or is it just my imagination? I'm running the new DamageControl 2.06 ROM.
I am running under the same conditions and have definitely seen better battery life.
I have seen better battery life with this radio too.
Also...I more than doubled my battery life by going into settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Network Settings> and UNCHECK "enable always-on mobile..."
Then I went into Settings>Location> Uncheck "Use wireless Networks", and Check "Use GPS".
With these settings and GPS on, I used my phone pretty heavily for 15 hours and had 54% battery life when I went to bed.
The only thing is that with enable always-on mobile unchecked, your phone only updates data when the screen is on, which means that it will only fetch emails/gmails when you turn the screen on. If it's idle, you won't get your gmail, but if the screen is on (for any reason)...then it'll fetch and update all your data. For me it's worth it to get my gmails a little later and more than doubling my battery life.
Hope this helps someone
I have definitely seen an increase in battery life with this new Radio.
I'm new to Radios... Since this new radio seems good, how do I go about flashing it? Is it a zip file like if I were doing a rom?

Haven't had any battery issues, but an update should be well worth it.

hey flipz figured i would try to catch you wjile your on and before you dissappear like zorro have you found any concrete facts upon the location variable to this radio...i see nothing but positive things about it although i dont see the positive effects...im still go back to the eris radio for fresh 2.0b2 and works the best for me...im also in northwest ohio but i figured the radio things had to be like a east coast west coast thing...any insight?

In theory they are designed to work the same everywhere. Once an update rolls out it will only be one radio, just the same as our 1.5 one was. However without a doubt, some seem to work better for people based on their area and it's always been that way on every phone. Unfortunately there is no concrete way to know which one will work better for people. I suppose it just depends on what hardware they are using in the towers around you. But I'm not a mobile network engineer so I'm honestly not 100% sure.

yea thats what i thought..because even when i ran 1.1 with the stock radio @ work i would never get a 3g sig...when i moved up to that 2.1 eris leak on got that new radio i got a substancially better at signal and greatly improved my battery and i couldnt of been happier...so when i saw the new new radio i was like wow can it even get better??? but then it was same as stock radio basically i never got a 3g sig..and i was scared about this first since the radio was i geuss for "verizon" and im now not runing the eris leak but it works great...all my co-workers on verizon always had better service than me...but ever since the eris radio i get just as much service as them btw flipz cant "flippin" wait to get 2.1 support on the kitchen!

Yea, on my touch pro I used to use a telus radio on Sprint because it gave me the best signal and speed. It wasn't the newest version or even made for Sprint, but it's what worked for me in my city!
ive seen a great improvement with this radio on 2.0d. they seem to have tweaked the bars b/c now im at 4-6 whereas previously id be 2-4, though the dbm is right around the same as always at home. i am, however, getting through the day with 50% battery left whereas before i would be 20% or less
Improved Battery and Radio performance in NYC. THANKS
Wait flipz... so you're saying we could use Verizon radios on our phones if we live in an area where Verizon gets excellent signal everywhere, and then our phone (on Sprint) would get signal like a Verizon phone?

i don't know how you can say that you get more battery life with this tweak. In my nexus righ next to the box where you can chek this option, has the following saying: "uses more battery"... is to you to think about.

It worked for WinMO. I used to use a Telus radio on my diamond. But I'm not sure I'd mess with flashing other vendor's radios on your hero. TECHNICALLY it should work. But I wouldn't want to be the test case.
new radio
i just downloaded this radio to see what all the fuss was about, and in my room it dropped my signal, now it keeps going back and forth to 1x now just over and over, im using the new damage rom, you guys think if i change to the newest flipz maybe it would be different. i know this sounds strange but i do feel like with certain roms i get better signal in my home, cause i tried the previous damage roms and all the previous flipz and for some reason i always get better signal in my home with the flipz roms! im just a confused soul.......

Samsung fascinate 802.11n doesnt pick up signal well..

Ok so the buit in wireless in my fascinate works well when up close to my router but i find when im more than 30 ft away I get 1 bar or less of signal and it wont connect or if it does it drops or is unusable. But using my laptop which only has 802.11g it connects very well to the router around 30 ft or more..is there something wrong with my phone or are the wireless chips in laptops better? This happens in all roms that ive used from dh12 to eb01 that im using now.

yes it's really annoying because I got an expensive 802.11n router and I was hoping that I could at least go around my backyard and in the garage with my phone on wifi the same way I do on my netbook or laptop..but I find that anywhere outside it doesn't even connect. BTW I'm using EB01 SC 2.4 voodo now but this happened in different rom/kernel configurations.
Is there any difference if you disable N on the router, and just use G instead?
I feel your pain man. I have a D-Link DIR-655 and while sitting outside 6' maybe 7' from it, right beside my sliding glass door I have -85 dbm. My son's Eris has -72 dbm up in his bedroom about 60' away. Go figure...

If it happens on both N and G, then that means it's not an 'n' specific issue. It could be an issue with the antennae (does wifi and 3G use the same one?), the chip, or somewhere else (maybe even if your router isn't actually entirely to spec, and the Fascinate is just more sensitive).
Guys, the fascinate has the worst reception out of any phone I've ever owned. 3g and wifi. Not to be mean, but you can either deal with the problem or sell the phone. I decided to sell it because I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

Mine has had pretty much as good reception as my iPod Touch and laptop wrt WiFi. Never had any problems with 3G, but I've not yet taken it out into some desolate place in the middle of no where (but use it all the time in buildings). So that means they aren't universal problems with the Fascinate. Might have just been a bad batch, or a weird software interaction issue.

Unfortunately it's hardware. It just has a really weak antenna. So weak that I had to sell it.
While the Fascinate does have a weak antenna, there is something that may help you, depending on your router and your willingness to try new things. What has vastly helped me on my Wi-fi range is, I flashed my router with DD-WRT and of course customized all of the settings. The power/range of the antennas on the router is MUCH better. I recommend looking into it. Google DD-WRT. I know this doesn't fix the weak antenna on the Fascinate, but hey, it will improve the range on your router to USE your Fascinate further away from it.

I run a Netgear N600 WIRELESS DUAL BAND ROUTER (WNDR3400). I run it on MIXED bands, so ALL bands. And I am at 100 mW, as depending on the router it is not smart to go any higher, it can just make everything worse.
Just in case it makes you feel better, the fascinate has extremely low radiation output. I know it's not much, but it's some sort of consolation.

[Q] 4g and Battery Life

I picked up my Evo the day they came out and have been really happy with it. Over the last few months I have been extremely busy with work and kids and have not gotten to keep up with updates to roms, radios and such. Lately I have been getting very poor battery life and can never get any 4g signal at all. I am in the greater Chicagoland area and have had perfect 4g signal in the past.
I am running Fresh 3.5.0.1 with the kernel included. I have updated all radios, PRL and profile and have yet to see an attainable 4g signal.
I was wondering if people could post general tips for better battery life and 4g signal. I know there is something about the never sleep setting on Wifi. What is that one exactly and other things like that?
Thanks in advance!
lol didn't know any mods on here actually worked with 4G and is fully functional for the phone. :-D
Not sure bout Chi-town but i know sometimes they turn down sites for upgrades & things.
As far as your battery life. Try netarchy's kernels. They work for me.
I am having the same problem in Chicago. I swear they are tweaking th e towers or something - my signal is just not as reliable as it was when I first got the phone last August. I sometimes even have problems streaming videos on 4G. Even with decent bars and speedtests - it just doesn't work all that well. Moving to Verizon and Thunderbolt this week....

[Q] Signal strength drops and semi-random reboots?

Okay, here's my problem. I've got my Samsung Epic up and running (finally), but for two annoying bugs: or it might be one bug with two parts.
One, the signal strength "wobbles" a lot, going from no bars (but still holding service) to almost full bars. I assumed at first that this is just a quirk of the preferred tower configuration around my home.
Part two is more annoying. Sometimes it will, apparently somewhat randomly, lose all signal, which prompts the phone to reboot. Actually it's not a TRUE reboot, it's just the half-reboot that happens when the Android shell crashes: return to boot animation, then reload everything. Often, it'll do this several times in a row. It was doing it horribly when I was running the AOSP version 4 ROM, so I flashed back to a semi-stock configuration (stock ROM plus ClockworkMod). But it's still doing it. Modem version is EC05, and I'm running on a Verizon MVNO. Can anyone offer suggestions?
Try updating your modem to the EI22 released modem and get on an EI22 ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, EI22 fixes most of the signal dropouts for me. Just update your modem.
On EH17 my bars would randomly go to 0 and data would drop out even though I'm parked on a repeater here at work, getting -76db signal (that's really, really good).
i just got a new (or probably refurb) phone from best buy after my original broke. (thank you black tie) and this new stock phone does this same stuff you are describing. this phone sucks! reboots, lock ups, bluetooth doesnt work, keyboard skips.. .what a joke.
so should i call sprint and try to get something other than an epic or go to best buy and have them order me another one? any suggestions?
Well, following the advice upthread I've gone ahead and installed the stock EI22 update for the Epic. We'll see how it turns out.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.
Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.
Try using an app like Network Info or Tasker to see if your phone is hopping towers while the signal is fluctuating. Maybe a PRL update will help.

Yes it should. Unfortunately the keyboard skips have yet to be addressed by Samsung. There is a maintenance update being worked on. Some people are still getting reboots with the new OTA for Gingerbread but not many. So maybe that will be addressed as well as the keyboard skips.

I'll try those--I was trying to use CellID Info for that purpose, but it hasn't reflected any changes at all between high signal and low signal. So far Network Info II isn't either, but we'll see. I did try a PRL update the other night, to no avail.

That's possible. God knows I'm out in the middle of nowhere, so quality of service probably isn't a high priority. I haven't seen it reflected in other Verizon devices I've looked at the last couple days, but then I haven't exactly been looking at them that closely.
My signal does seem a lot more consistent today--right now I'm stuck at 2-3 out of 6 bars, but it's holding that constantly with very little variation, less even than I would think was normal. Maybe it was a network problem after all and not just my device. That would be nice.
Edit: Looks like I spoke a little too soon, as I just had one complete signal dropout. But it's still better than it was.
That could be when they just swapped out amplifiers at the tower that was giving you trouble. Also it seems Sprint service is subject to a lot of dead zones. I got a big dead spot in my house.

I'm not on Sprint, it's flashed to a Verizon MVNO, so I'm on VZW towers.
Strangely, I've seen my AT&T Android phone lose signal too a couple times today--which is bizarre, because it almost never does that. AT&T around here is only 2G, and slow 2G at that, but the signal is very reliable. Just enough to make me wonder if something weird is going on locally.
In case anyone's still interested in this: it's still doing it, so it's pretty clearly the phone. However when I took it into a building where there's normally poor signal, it stopped doing it and held the stronger signal. Is it possible that because this is a Sprint radio, it's trying to default to 1900 MHz, instead of the stronger 850 signal?

If you're in the affected area, maybe update your PRL and see if that gets it back on track? Or maybe it's just all the new speedy users in Atlanta sucking the bandwidth from the rest of us ;]
Heres the thing I live in McDonough (metro ATL) and work in ATL, since this service has been turned on, it seems like the penetration is so much worse, no signal in any building. I'm no noob, so I have done everything I know how to reset the signal, nothing works, 3 phones. And many other friends have the same problem. I'll be complaining to Sprint soon. Now when I'm outside I get a great signal, with the same speed as before this service was turned on, so take that as you will.

Actually I have all the modems on my sdcard, and now the fb27 thanks to calkulin. Ive always had the best results for signal strength with eg31, best speed with fb21. Just installed fb27, but it hasnt helped the problem Im seeing, this is with my touch and 3 og epics (brother, mom, my og epic). Im also seeing when indoors and use an internet speed test app its choosing out of state servers, but when outside and I have a signal it is choosing a close location, but still jumps from 3/4/5 bars to no bars, and internet speeds drop out about every 15secs for 5 secs. Everything Im saying is well tested on 4 phones, and 1 in 2 places by me, still seeing the same thing. This is either being worked on or just the way the new signal is pulsing.

Where did you get the other modems? i thought we only had fb15?!?
jeeps, I hope they increase their 3g speeds because this has been hard to deal with. Sometimes I wonder how they get off charging people so much a month for utter crap.

Yeah, I've used the modems. sadly EC05 and EI22 are the best for me. This F series modem has been an overweight blind date for me.
