I just want to warn people of this ive noticed this and hope you guys do use extream caution. When you get a refurb evo from the sprint store when you try to put a screen protector on such as zagg or xtream guard that want you to use water or there spray.
You usally get one shot when you use the squeege to get out the air bubbles and apply pressure to the screen. It causes the glass screen seal to break lose when you try to do it again later such as replace the protector it will leak the water or soultion down on the lcd screen. No matter how careful you are had this happen both times for me had 2 phones replaced the glass screens suck when you apply pressure to them to get the air bubbles out from the protector. Its a one shot go.
So be careful just warning I got my phone swaped out and the screen wasnt glued down right it was peeling up and the woman at the sprint store told me it was cosmetic damage she was being a pain about it lol. Told her im not taking a dicked up phone that they messed up on and she had some tech guys come out and they worked with me and got it fixed. Anyways be wary of the refurbes for the glass will leak.
That's why I just put the ones without needing water/solution.

my refurb has been through a couple invisa shields, no problems here perhaps they did not apply the seal correctly

Ya i got lucky with my new evo but then the screen had the light issue with the b spot problem so i had to take it in didnt have it for 2 months and they swapped it out with a refurb sucked. Always having issues with refurbs. Dunno if the insurance company assurance will give you a new for 100 dollars for that price you could buy a brand new one hate the refurbes.

I have TRIED to scratch my screen just to see how much abuse this thing can take. I was unsuccessful. IMO- screen protectors are unnecessary anyways.

EXactly. Same opinion here. I don't use the screen protectors because they give the screen a "rubbery" feel and when swiping with your finger on the screen it drags and feels sticky. So no screen protector for me. Unless you sweep your damn driveway with your phone face down, you don't need that crap on your screens!

I went that route had issue with finger prints tho. That's pretty much why I use one.
1) Glass does not leak. However, the solution could have dripped in one of the many "unsealed" areas of the electronic device.
2) If you do leak water in the device while applying a screen protector, that is considered water damage and not covered under the manufacturers warranty (which is determined by HTC, not "the lady behind the Sprint counter").
3) $100 will not buy you a brand new device. That figure you are referring to is subsidized pricing. Sprint pays something like $400 to buy the device at wholesale from HTC. They eat the cost difference based on the condition you will pay your bill for the next 2 years, thus, making the difference back. But since you are already in contract, you would not be entitled to this pricing. You would need to pay "retail" pricing, which like all retail, is slightly above wholesale.
4) Going through the insurance company (Assurion) will not get you a new phone. It will be a refurb from HTC. But, if they no longer carry the device, or are out of stock, they will provide you a "next best option", or you can wait for more EVO's to come in. This is not something they proactively offer, but if you request it, they will do it.
Hope this clarifys a few things

i know how the dust in getting in our phones, there is a defective seal between the body & the lcd. how do i have proof? i went to install a screen protector today and the solution leaked underneath the lcd and leaves staining and a fog. i had to put my hero in a bag of dry rice to preserve & dry it. no other phone i have had, had this issue when installing a screen protector, im only using a small amount of water spray too, not a ton.

I actually agree, for some reason I am just unable to pass up an opportunity to give you $h1t
Fortunately I have been one of the lucky few who have no dust under my screen and my call/end button paint shows no wear at all. My hero looks as new today as it did on 3/12/2009 when I got it.
I was serious though about getting photographic documentation, not sure what you would do with it but if you ad an opportunity to tell someone who could do something about it you would be glad you took the pics (ie, emailing someone at htc or sprint, or even proving the defect to customer service in order to get a replacement)
*edit- You bought the screen protector from HTC? I put a full zagg shield on mine a couple months ago and was very paranoid about the solution getting down in the crack between the bottom of the screen and the button plate but I was lucky, no problems.

Eh...good luck. You've got water underneath your screen via a third party screen protective solution.
The liquid wouldnt have entered your screen had you not administered it. Water can creep through even the smallest of openings.
I highly doubt things are going to work in your favor if you enter a Sprint store. I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint location that advocates a screen solution that requires even the smallest amount of liquid since liquid damage is something that must be handled by the insurance company, Asurion, that many wireless providers work through.
Its worth a shot. Just dont be completely disappointed if the Sprint store doesnt respond in your favor.

Sprint stores as well as Best Buy both install screen protectors, so I doubt that would be an issue.
Umm...not to be rude here, but that's been a known issue for a while. It's not new. Anyone who's had the dust issue (myself included) has known about the seal under the screen leaking.
Yes it's defective. If you put up enough of a fuss they'll replace it with a refurb which will likely have the same problem.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I bought mine at best buy, got it replaced, and haven't had the problem since. It appears HTC had a bad batch (well a lot of them, really) for about 6-8 months. They fixed the problem after that, but the good ones are mixed in with the old ones. It's a crapshoot as to whether you'll get one without a dust problem.
I always get screen protectors that have built in sticky solution. never had the dust problem either.

I'll just put it like this, its not that I don't believe people are having these issues its just that they are exaggerating it completely out of proportion.
I have a Htc Hero(With Google) made in 2009, came with the 1.56 RUU Installed. I have 1 (READ 1) dead pixel on my entire screen, the case has no paint chips, no dust under the screen, buttons show no wear(its not paint...), my speakers work and sound great, I get a full signal in 90% of places, Calls never drop, hardware is fast if you know what your doing and tweak it, you can run 2.1 perfectly if you know what your doing, no battery issues whatsoever.
So yeah... a dead pixel... I'm completely returning my hero to Sprint for that. (not)
Click to collapse
I also have a dead pixel. And I'm not returning it for that reason, either.
But I feel I need to set you straight on a few issues.
#1. The dust issue is real. While I personally didn't wait until I had half my screen covered with it to replace it, I've seen pics (here I believe) where the phone is virtually unusable due to the dust. I had a small amount of dust. But why shouldn't I return it? Why should I spend a bunch of money on a defective piece of hardware? If it's not properly functioning when brand new I'm returning it. Which is what I did, and lucked out.
#2. Button wear. I've never had this problem (only had the phone a couple of months) but my wife has. Whether it's paint, or dye, or what have you, those things can and do flake. There are also images of it on these forums if you search for them.
#3. Never had a speaker problem.
#4. You seem to be extremely fortunate about where you live/drive/work then. Because signal issues happen if you do any travelling.
#5. I don't get people with battery problems either. I have the stock battery and can go all day (12-14 hours) and use 50% or less of the battery.
Anyhow, I doubt the people that are having the issues you mention are exaggerating, and at least in the case of the flaking buttons and dust I know from experience they're as bad as people make it out to be.

exactly, plus they sell them as well. it wouldn't void my warranty under water damage because the water indicator sticker is intact and there are no signs of water damage. i doubt a small amount of solution would seep under the screen unless it was defective. im about to call sprint and demand a brand new hero or a samsung moment as im on my 3rd phone now. besides the fact the 3rd phone they sent me was suppose to be new and it's a refurb with over 700 calls made from it. im really about to not buy htc or sprint anymore and maybe move to another carrier.

I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint Store that would install a screen protector that uses any form of a liquid. The screen protectors that Sprint stores sell are a stick film. Nothing that requires liquid to apply.
Best Buy stores do sell and install these...but you're not going to Best Buy for a replacement unit generally. I'm sure they'll turn you away.
well forget sprint, they said the most that will happen is to give me another refurbish, they need to all be on the same page. some say you get new phones and some say they give you used ones. after 3 phones im entitled to a new one or another comparable model. so i guess my last hope is to call htc on monday, after that im dropping my contract and going to t-mobile or verizon. maybe the issue is they give people used phones and not new ones, they need to start backing up their warranties because it seems to me they are just cheap as hell.

all replacements were done through sprint and my 2nd one was a brand new phone. the tech told me last week that if my 3rd one acts up im entitled to a another compatible phone model such as the moment. now they are telling me something different. to me the $7 insurance i pay for every month is apparently worthless.

Yep the 3 phones for virtually nothing compared to how much you would of had to pay.
Why do we even bother with the $7?
so, i recently received a replacement Evo from the repair center, and not even a full week later, my screen shatters from a 2ft fall . I left my evo on my lap, and rushed out of my car and completely forgot i had placed my evo on my lap. Well hearing my phone smack the road was a quick reminder of it. Lucky Damaged screens are covered under free replacement from the sprint repair center. Sprint use to never replace damaged phone with out having to pay the deductible. is this new, or have i just been dealing with the wrong people? attacheted is a picture of my evo. by the way, although the screen is shattered, it is 100% fully functional .
I just went threw the EXACT same thing on Friday pretty much. The FIRST time my EVO ever fell (about 2~3 feet) it shattered the screen.
I stuck my EVO in my hoodie pocket in my garage and the rubber case had hung up on the materiel so it didn't get all the way in my pocket. I let go thinking it was all the way in my pocket (was in a rush to get somewhere) and it hit the concrete floor face down.
The outside screen was 100% ok but the inner screen, the one that actually lights up was shattered.
I took it to my local sprint store which was only 3 blocks away and asked about a replacement expecting to pay the $100.00 dollar deductible. I was informed there was NO deductible and that Sprint had changed the policy a couple months ago with regards to replacing the broken screens. I asked why the change, because so many have broken? The store manager said yep, pretty much. Easier to just replacement them then deal with pissed off customers and potential law suits over something that breaks SO easy.
Anyway they were out of Novatech screens so they sent me over to a Corporate store. Took about two hours to get it fixed. They replaced the WHOLE front and even gave me the old one back because I had a Zagg protector on it. They told me to go to Zagg.com and claim a warranty on it which I did, should be here within a week!
same here, i walked in thinking they weren't going to cover it. I myself use to cause a stink when they wouldn't cover cracked screens. makes things a lot easier when sprint actually works with you. now my replacement is on its way, should be there tomorrow. i really am considering buying the otter box.
But in the long run, seems as though MOST people end up paying more into insurance than they actually get out of it
I absolutely agree, you end up paying $100 just to get a used phone. I just checked ##786# my phone was initially activated 7/1510

I've got to watch mine more carefully. I bought the Sprint screen protector for mine. Even after countless drops no cracks yet. But i can see a couple cracks on screen protector but not on screen itself.
Yay for insurance, even-though many would pay more into insurance than they get, at least there is a sense of protection.

One thing I realized about insurance....you only need it when you dont have it.

I don't know if you are in the UK but if you are then many bank accounts give free insurance for phones, etc.that option might be there in other countries too.but you need the right type of bank account for that.my bank account gives me free travel insurance, break down cover for my car and phone insurance among other things.a lot cheaper than getting these separately.
Cracked screen
I dropped min today from 20cm height and first 5 minutes later it cracked in 2 pieces so I feel your pain. I checked what the spare part costs, and it was 285 euro's for the AMOLED+Glass apparently it is glued together so everything has to be replaced, and then you need to add the work costs. So it probably will be cheaper to buy a used one and sell yours for parts
Just broke my screen the other day. Getting out of my car, note was between me and car door. Didnt end well. 250 for lcd combo on ebay.
It reminds me of my first scratch on my vehicle, dont want to touch it.

No, this is wrong. Manufacturers lie about only way to replace glass+display. I broke the Galaxy S screen, and at samsung service they told me to replace everything, and that I have no chance to replace only screen. But I decided to try replace it by my self. I buy glass for Galaxy S on ebay for 9$. Then, using guitar pick I removed shards of glass. Then pasted on the sides of the glass with glue. And that's it! Fits perfectly. Works even better than before.
Yeah I need to upgrade current account to get it...don't have a problem doing it but was just unsure how long it will be before I can claim. But I also thought it might take longer to get it repaired than going for a mobile phone specialist insurer...also with the bank insurance..I know a while back my brother claimed and they didn't even ask for his old phone that was easily repaired!
Also just like to add...I really didn't apply that much pressure to the screen been, nursing this baby. So be careful. Wouldn't wish it on anyone to go through the pain I am.

Getting and claiming phone insurance after your phone is broken is fraud!
Either insure your phone beforehand, or deal with the consequences of not doing so, but don't break the law, and put the premiums up for people who had more foresight than you!

I think also like you !!!
;-)
I would strongly suggest you did not claim for it after the event as this is a criminal offence.
You may however, wish to check if your household (contents) insurance covers such damage and/or if your credit card covers accidental damage if you used it.

You can go to most shops and get your Galaxy S fixed for 90-100 euro where they only switch the glass but with the Note you can't find anyone, only to replace the whole thing. I have an insurance but was not sure if I was going to use it because it is my 2 device in 1 year that went busted. But it is painful to be remembered every time I turn it on so I will find out what the costs is going to be and use my insurance. I guess not using the insurance when you have it is to commit fraud
Heh, critics weren't lying when they said the Galaxy S4 is way more fragile than the S3. I knocked off my nightstand in the middle of the night, landed on my wooden floor and have this dumb hairline crack.
The phone is only 5 days old and this may seem like a dumb question but is it possible for AT&T to switch it out?
Unless you have cell phone insurance, probably not.... I would try to say it was in your pocket and then when you took it out it cracked....
Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry to see that. I read that there was a possible recall because of easy screen fracture, perhaps you can search the forums and find link. I hope you're able to get it resolved to your satisfaction. Be sure and let us know how it goes if you try to swap it out with AT&T.
Seeing the picture that you posted just makes me want to put this phone inside of case, even though I know it will make it look hideous!

The phone is only 5 days old and this may seem like a dumb question but is it possible for AT&T to switch it out?

OP I think you can sign up online for insurance within 14 days of getting the phone. Check your plan/phone options on AT&T website. You do not have to prove to them that the phone is in impeccable condition.
You might want to look into 3rd party insurance that covers that type of thing, such as Square Trade for future phone purchases. Accidents will happen, but most warranties don't cover things like this.
And in terms of the crack itself, I think this proves what I always suspected about Gorilla Glass 3 - it is stronger by design, so they make the layer thinner so the phone is thinner. The layer of smaller thickness is just as strong (hopefully not less strong) than the thicker layer of GG2 on SGS3.
With the screen larger than the one on SGS3, there is less bezel on sides of the screen, less support for the glass layer, and that makes the whole screen less rigid.

Yeah unfortunately I did the same thing, and mine got a crack in it, what is really unfortunate is the fact that the lcd touchscreen and glass may be glued or so close together, you might have to get the whole thing fixed and samsung charges 169.95 to do it and I've been told if you wait a few months it will get cheaper, but I don't know by how much.
Otterbox defeats these incidents ...dropped mine out of an airplane 15 ft and not a single scratch...

Around here.. we call that insurance fraud =\
Also, he'd have to pay a $199.99 deductible

It is not fraud. You are NOT obliged to have a functioning device while signing up for this insurance online. They just make the sign up window short, to protect themselves.
But speaking of this insurance, yes, i just checked, AT&T will charge you $199 deductible for SGS4!!!!!!!!!! That is on top of $7/month ($84/year) they want you to pay for insurance.

Better to invest in the ugly (to some) otterbox or kraken.
unless you have insurance, or you must pay some money for this damage:laugh:
Sorry for not posting, I've been busy with work.
An update: I talked to AT&T and told them I received the phone like that and must have happened when it was shipped. There's no physical damage as I can tell. The crack is on the inside of the screen. I sent the phone out to them and they said they'll inspect it and ship me a new one.
I would def recommend getting a case, something that can survive a fall because I had a case on this but it's pretty lightweight compared to others.

Maybe I missed it. But did you have any kind of case on it at all?
While on this topic, it should be noted that many major credit cards offer protection for free against exactly this kind of stuff. I know Amex does.

i had this one on:

it's so lightweight and didn't really protect anything.

Damn that sucks. Sometimes it's just the angle of the hit that gets you. I'm wondering if it caught a corner or edge of something on the screen. It really sucks if the glass cracked from the tension produced by the corner of the shell hitting the ground.

Just keep it and use it until we can buy replacement screens.

I have a chip the size of a point of a pen on the side chrome bezel. I have no case because Im waiting for my UAG and Spigen case to arrive. Im still within my 14 day return period. I thought about actually taking it back to get a replacement due to the small blemish, although, I admit it's kind of silly to exchange the phone for something so small. It just sucks that my baby is not perfect any more. Knowing I have an opportunity to exchange it, I just might. How many of you would exchange it for a new one for something so small?
i wouldn't

I would not.
But, since it is already bugging you enough to ask people's opinion about it now, you'll probably come to regret it eventually if you don't.

I have this too! Mine was like this from the factory. Was pretty upset when I saw it even though it's so minor. Thought about doing the same thing but I don't think it's really worth the trouble. But let me know how it goes if you do
my note just fell off the night stand onto tile with no case. I will be exchanging it tomorrow. lol

If I find a defect or blemish on a new phone, that was a manufacturing issue, I may return it for replacement. If I caused the issue and it was minor, I'd ignore it because a case will hide it anyways.
If it was a serious damage... cracked screen, etc.. and it was my fault, I'd just pay the insurance to get it replaced.
Note: I'd also be more descriptive in my subject/title if you want to get more response.. Instead of "would you?" I would have put "Would you return your Note 3 if it has a blemish?"

I would, why star with something that is already damaged specially being that this phone is so expensive ....

Correct me if I'm wrong but you've just admitted it's not a defect but it fell off your night stand onto the tile with no case. This would indicate physical damage so unless you have a flawless return policy, you may be out of luck. I know in Canada, if this were the case, we would be told to suck it up and be stuck with a device we would need to sell privately or wait before we're entitled to a hardware upgrade.

The point is.. he didn't 'start' with a damaged phone. He dropped it and didn't have a case on it. I have a cheap $3 case on mine, until the case I want comes out. If you don't protect your phone and you drop it, it's your fault, not the manufacturers. That's my opinion anyways.
I have noticed the phone runs very warm sometimes when its just sitting in my pocket. I called at&t and they said to return it since Im still within 14 days.

I respect your opinion but I was answering to the original poster, not the one that drop it from the night stand. In that one he doesn't say that he dropped his phone.

It's all good. I only responded to you post, because it appeared you were replying to my comment. It appears now that you just hit the wrong reply button. No harm man.

GL with this. Let us know if your successful or not.
I dropped mine on concrete from about 1.5 feet up. Very little damage on the side, which I could EASILY live with.
Sadly, the entire display died slowly over a 24hr period. I kid you not, I could almost see the screen slowly die. Inside, I was crying.
But it was my fault, and almost got laughed out of the store when I tried to get insurance on it /facepalm.
Now I'm in the market for a full screen/digitizer/front assembly housing. And the phone isn't even 1 month old! /cry
For the price you've paid, you deserve a flawless product, return it and enjoy a full product. In other words go get a replacement!

I'm sorry but isn't that what insurance is for? Doesn't matter if you drop the phone in the toilet, you can still get a replacement, otherwise why have insurance in the 1st place, if the damage is from before you got it or Samsung's fault isn't that what the warranty is for....
Yes and get a different color.
Man I'm on the Otterbox Defender's notification list for when it becomes available. But I still dumped $20 on a screen guard and a crappy gel case at purchase. Solid investment for the short-term, and I even have replacement insurance. Sorry but I can't even fathom the amount of rage I'd have at myself for being in that predicament. I like to keep my stuff in mint condition for resale when it's time to upgrade.

Ok Y'all. At&t replaced it today, no hassle. They even installed a brand new glass screen protector, no charge. I wish my cases would arrive already! For now Im putting in a invisishield sock.
Not worth the hassle as you might end up with a new unit with other characteristics, like wonky home button or gaps around the glass.
