Easy Guide for Backup and Restore using ClockWorkMod Recovery
Advanced Restore of Data for installing after a Rom upgrade
Very detailed with Pictures You can follow

I love the fact I can reliably and precisely backup and restore a ROM flashed through CWR. It will backup every minute detail and restore it back to the exact condition it was in at backup...not even a single icon missing or different. Even the exact point in a song that was playing when the ROM shut down and I backed it up is restored. And I have been doing these a lot without a hitch.
I like to check out new and other ROMs and I'll backup my current ROM and then do Task 29 and flash the new ROM. I take the backed-up ROM, which is saved on the SD card in one single, specifically named, folder and archive it on my PC. Then I flash the new ROM. If I like that new ROM, I back it up and save the backup on my PC. If I don't like it, I do Task 29, reinstall magldr and the specific recovery file for the backed-up ROM and then copy the archived backup back to the SD card and flash it. Super simple and it puts it back like it never was removed. It's a helluva lot better than Titanium Backup. CWR backup is more akin to a Star Trek transporter where it puts it back exactly like it was before...lol...And it has been so perfectly reliable. Not even a hiccup has been noticed and I've done it a bunch of times.

Hi,
Great idea.
However, people being people, and noobs being noobs, you might want to change picture 11 on MS WORD sheet to "restore"and "restore" rather than "restore"and "backup".

Thanks man... its a life saver!

Thanks but this doesn't help me I get how to do this part, what I don't get is after installing my NAND Custom ROM, I can't access the AD Recovery to actually get into clock work mod, just says not found! They're stored in a folder on your SD card. If I'm not mistaken it's /clockworkmod/backup

Hello everyone. I have been testin a rom called miui, and now I found it great and I am going to keep it. The problem is that the test I made were with a borrowed 16GB SD card, and now I would like to replace it with my definitive 16 GB class 6 SD card. How can I do this without having to reinstall and configure everything?
This procedure seems to be the right one, but I have a question, does it save everything you have in your SD card?, if this is afirmative, then I have a problem, because I won´t have enough space in the SD to make the backup file.. what can you recomend me to do?.
Best regards and thank you very much for all your support

Using SD-Backup/Restore

The standard XDA ROM includes a tool to backup your personal data to a SD-card; "SD Backup". I used this tool just before updating my ROM to 3.15.15. After this I used the tool again to restore my personal data back to the internal memory. Everything looks as before and works just fine. The only thing that bugs me is the fact that this ROM upgarde comes with MediaPlayer 8.5 but after the restore I ended-up with version 8.0 again!
This makes me wonder what the backup tool downgraded aswell. I cannot find anything else but who knows. :?
Anybody got an idea how to make sure that the restore does not downgrade any installed software or why the bloody thing downgraded my player in the first place? :x

Please show me how to use SD Backup!

That usually happens because there is not enough room on the SD card. try deleting some stuff and try again.
it ran for about 20 seconds and did the same thing
This is the generic error message from nandroid, make sure you haven't manually changed any file/folder names on your sd card. Also, ensure you have space on your SD card. I am getting the same message because it is not liking my ext partition, which I suspect is because it doesn't like ext4.
I think i renamed the file or deleted it and made a new one
is there a way i could make a folder and make it work
I knew someone that was having this problem. He ended up switching out his sdcards and it started working...Also which recovery and version are you using?

Make a new nandroid with what you got loaded right now, then move your old one into that folder and you're good to go. I had the same issue when I got a replacement hero and this did the trick for me

Complete phone backup

I've found 'My phone' to be very good for backing up the general user data on board the HD2 but am aware of it's limitations.
I want to be able to backup my registry, sense items: (stocks, weather locations etc) opera favourites etc to my backup hard drive so that should I have to hard reset I can easily restore everything as it was as I finally have my phone set up the way that I like. However I don't know the file names or where the files are located.
Can other people add to this the locations of the backup files needed to make a full backup and also any other things that should be backed up that I haven't got in my list?

Sprite full backup, you can also set it up to backup SD card.
......... or SPB Backup. Serves me excellent .
BTW: Question to the Masterminds here: what would be the EXACT procedures to make a backup in a way that the entire ROM/RAM/mSD-Card can be backed up, so that in case I have to buy a new HD2 it can be reflashed with my exact ROM-version + rest that works so flawless ?

regarding the rom, none, you simply need to save the nbh for rom and radio somewhere and flash them again after you buy the new hd2, then restore with a sprite backup or similar over the same rom/radio
has anyone done a full restore using sprite? I am considering trying a cooked rom but I would like to know if I can restore back to a stock rom just in case.

A full backup should only be reapplied to the exact same ROM it was made on.

- Make a full backup of the old device with SPB backup as you have it
- Download and flash the same ROM you had on the old device, or flash it from the local copy you obviously kept for that exact reason in case the cook somehow decided to take it offline
- Take microSD card from old device and put in new one
- Restore backup on new device
There you are...
Thanks for those program suggestions however I'd rather copy half a dozen files/folders over to my backup device than spend $20 on a program that does more or less the same thing.
I'm looking to find out the file locations of the stocks, registry, weather locations, time zones ertc not backed up by the 'my phone' application. Does anyone know which files hold this information? In particular I did a google search and despite being a master at it I couldn't find any info on the location of the system registry so does anyone know where that is? I found that CeRegEditor failed to restore the registry backup when I needed it to.
thanks

[Q] rooting, flashing, goldcard questions

Hi guys
I'm new to the Android business and I have a few questions, which I will be very happy if you answered.
1. What the heck is a gold card ? I mean, I know it's a modified memcard that I need for rooting phones, but why do I need it ? Why is it not possible to root a phone without it ? Can I use the goldcard as a usual memcard, or do I have to have separate one ?
2. Are there any tutorials for rooting under linux ? I have dualboot, but I don't like windoze, so it would be nice to be able to do it under Ubuntu.
3. Is it possible to restore the original ROM after flashing it ? From what I understand, I suppose I could download the files (maybe from the official HTC site) and install it just like any other ROM. Am I right ?
4. Are there any problems with flashing I should be aware of (IDK, camera not working, microphone problems, graphic artefacts, whatever) ? Can I kill my phone if I do something wrong ?
5. A highly hypothetical question : is it possible to install any other mobile OS after rooting ? Not that I wanna do it, I just wanna know. If not, why ?
6. Is it possible to change boot animations, icons, etc in a ROM that I downloaded ?
I'm thinking about flashing the ROM, because I have problem with 3G / only the browser seems to work with the connection. All the other apps report "No connection".
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Most important :
Can I use the goldcard as a usual memcard, or do I have to have separate one ?
Is it possible to restore the original ROM after flashing it ?
Can I kill my phone if I do something wrong ?
C'mon guys, please..
1. I won't be able to explain how it works exactly, but it seems like it gives higher access level, which is needed for rooting your phone. You can use almost any (some of them doesn't work) MicroSD card and after rooting you phone you'll be able to format it and use as a memory card again.
2. http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-r4-htc-legend-rooting-guide-now-with-1-31-x/ (works on Linux, tested personaly).
3. Yes, later you can flash one of official ROM's. You can download them from here.
4. It depends on the ROM you're going to use. Some of them are damn stable and some not. Read comments before using it. Flash ROM's by using ROM Manager (it's on the Market), it's absolutely fail proof.
Just:
* don't forget to do FULL wipe before flashing ROM.
* read how-to's and (or) chef's notes carefully BEFORE you start.
5. I don't think so as there are no drivers for the other operating systems. Could be some other reasons is well, i don't know.
6. Yes, read those threads.
Thanks very much, dude !
I think I'll try out the most popular one - CyanogenMod. Hope that's stable and it's Froyo-based. Is it ?
btw I can't use the market, that's the main reason I wanna flash. I just can't connect to my gmail account, thus being unable to install new apps. On 3G none of the apps can connect to the internet, on wifi they connect, except the goddamn market.
Thanks again, much love !
btw I hear that you don't need the gold card to root the phone if it's not branded (therefore I don't need one to flash the ROM). Is that right ? My phone's not branded...

My phone wasn't branded too, but i couldn't root without the goldcard.
If I backup the data that I currently have on my memcard, can I restore it on any ROM I install ? I just need the facebook-linked contacts, I really don't have anything else as I can't install apps.
One more question - after flashing, is there a way to install apps without the market ? I know, if I had "astro file manager", I could, but now I can't even install astro. Maybe a similar (if not the same) file manager could be included in the ROM ?

You don't have to backup SD card before flashing ROM as you won't lose any pictures, music, videos or any other files THAT ARE on SD card (unless YOU will format it). If you want to backup some applications data/settings - try to use My Backup app.

You can install apps by using ADB if you don't have Market app installed. Also you can use any file manager if your app setup files (APKs) are on the SD card.
And a little advise - use Nandroid backup and then you can do whatever you want. If the things goes wrong way - use Nandroid restore Just do NOT format your SD card without copying files on your PC first.
I created a GoldCard using this guide. How do I know if it's a working goldcard before I root my phone ? I didn't even format the card (I forgot to, because it wasn't mentioned in the guide).
Dunno where the hell have I posted my question(there should be a "view my posts" button).
Anyway... I'm trying to root my Legend, but I get stuck at the point where I have to run the step1 script -> I'm unable to run it, because it allways throws me a "permission denied" error. Even tho it's ran by sudo and it has rwxrwxrwx permissions.
What's going on here ?

Thanks, Paul
I think you can
What app do you use to backup before wiping ?
I install my apps to the SDcard, so they should work after wiping, but I also need my old settings, phone book and stuff.
Titanium Backup does a fine backup "app-centric", so you can restore all your apps regardless of their location, including their settings, scores and market location. I would not recommend aiming for a backup of system settings, since you might compromise the function of your new ROM with old system settings. If you just want to do a test with a new ROM, and want to go back to your initial ROM, use Nandroid backup that is part of your rooted Recovery menu - it does a 1:1 backup of your entire ROM. For phone book etc. do a PC sync or use Google Apps. For SMS backup there are a number of free apps that back your SMS up to Gmail, under a SMS label, or to your SD, as an XML file.

[Q] Backup/Restore to 7720 without going through updates?

Is there a way to backup system and then restore it back after coming back from Android.
I really like WP7 but like switching back to android to try some new android nand roms/apps etc but was wondering if it was possible to restore system back to 7720 with all aps without having to go through all the updates again etc?
I noticed backup option in the cab sender but assumed this is just for apps/settings?
As far as I know, zune has already made some backups (before every update) and you'll maybe able to restore it after flashing the rom...
But I would suggest you a dual boot if you often want to try new android roms... Much easier this way than constant flashing of wp7...

So I can restore straight back to 7720 via Zune without going through steps of separate updates?
Yes dual boot is an option but you cant use Android "roms" when dual booting, You can only boot "builds". It would be good for trying out Android apps but I like trying out new Android nand roms.
Ill re-flash to Android and see how I get on next time I want WP7

The backup option does restore apps, settings texts etc. but needs a ROM in NAND to backup to, and is fussy about partition size. So I would remove any partition, then backup and send a partition and storage unlock your card, before going to nandroid.
Because you know your SD works. you can do the one shot and leave your phone for a couple of hours (and give people grief for wrong postings), then restore. then setup any partition.
when all is running good, do another backup just in case.
you thanked me prematurely!
To remove a partition, a hard reset is required,
I've just tried it so thats no good.
so you would think that you have to set up a partition first, then backup, then storage unlock, then nandroid, then flash rom, then upgrade via cabs, then set up same partition, then restore.
But there seems to be only the latest restore available, and when Zune upgrades, it creates a restore point, so may overwrite our backup. This may explain fussyness.
Anyway, I am testing this ATM.
The backup is stored in C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\d28adbc9 - aeb87692 - 70440b17 - bbf75b0f\RestorePoint, and is a file named something like 432F7761-9CC0-4CB0-BF3B-E9E6C0198BCD.
It is overwritten on zune update and cab sender backup. I have copied the backup file from the last time I was on BTTF mango, but am still unable to restore it(errors 801812E0 in Zune and "can't restore phone" in cab sender restore).
I am thinking it is either the partition (Although the different size error is absent)or the fact that it is a new ROM (therefore a new phone) that makes the restore impossible.
There also is another file in the folder called activeID.DAT
I don't know what this is but its presence or absence has no effect on my inability to restore, although it wasn't there when I made the backup from the last ROM.
I am putting this info out in the hope that someone can find a way to do what Microsoft has patently failed to do.
Edit; thanks lantern20, I am on Windows 7
On WinXP it's located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update

Robbie P - any progress with testing?
Does restore work from a clean install + partition (to original size), before allowing Zune to do any updates? If so that would be hugely helpful.

See my post after the one you quoted.
The problem is that after updating the ROM, a hard reset is needed to apply the developer/chevron unlock (therefore you lose all data). Hard reset is also needed to apply or remove any partition.
Finding where the backup is stored on your computer helps to stop the file being overwritten by zune but I have not been able to restore.
It may be that you can only restore to the same set-up (flashing), as each new flash may set up the memory uniquely.
I will be changing my software radio next week to 5.61 (and therefore the ROM arrgh!), so will give it all another go then.

Great - really interested to know whether you can flash from scratch, send the same partition cab as before, hard reset to activate and then successfully restore to get straight back to 7720 (without using Zune at all). I will watch this space.
was there any follow up on this?
is it possible to 'image' the nand with wp7, try Android (or even another wp7) and then restore the image back again?
i had no problem transfering the wp7 special partition from card to card so that part would be ok.
