Getting a brand new EVO from Asurion - EVO 4G General

My Evo was stolen while at a restaurant so I filed a claim with Asurion, paid my deductible and they sent me a refurb. When I got the refurb I noticed and indention in the screen kinda like someone took a safety pin and pressed really hard on the screen. The screen also has lines running through it. I also noticed the speaker for the earpiece looked like sh*t and the charging port didn't work very good. I called asurion and the tech went through his tests and told me to do a few things. One of them was to take the battery out and press the power button for 15 seconds. He said this will reset some settings on the motherboard and could fix the USB port problem. I thought he was full of it, but it actually worked. Obviously the rest of the stuff is cosmetic and he couldn't fix it, so he offered me a brand new one free of charge. Of course I feel like if you are paying for insurance this is what you should get in the first place, but I understand why they refurbish them and send those first. I can't wait to get my brand new one. I can tell everyone who reads this that the TEP price is well worth it to me. Asurion is definitely living up to their end of the agreement and that is all I can ask for. To me it is well worth the $7 a month on my bill to get the great service I got after having something as devastating as having my EVO stolen from me.

imho you got lucky with a new evo 99.99999% of the time they will only send out refurbs over and over and over .. still grats on the new evo . i see your in springfield,oh what restaurant was you at so i know not to set mine down lol

I jacked up my USB port plugging my evo into a computer I built and stupid me hooked up the external USB ports on the motherboard wrong. Needless to say it fried the USB port. The phone thought it was charging whenever the battery was at 90 or more. Below that it drained extremely fast. Battery would not charge in phone at all. Even if it said it did. I claimed insurance on it (sprint here saw I had rooted by the s-off which I was too lazy to turn on thinking its just hardware so they wouldnt look) Placed the order for the replacement, it said phone was back ordered. 3 days go by and I see a tracking number. Phone gets here and its brand new. With new SD Card Charger Booklet Battery all in the unopened brand new evo box. On top of it kept the old sd card, battery, and charger. Basically for $100 deductible I would say Asurion is worth it. I got all that PLUS a brand new evo.

I haven't had to use the insurance yet, but I'm glad I have it, especially after reading about the good things you guys just posted. I've read threads on here where people say 'but I don't have the insurance' and I say to myself 'wtf? Why wouldn't you pay $7 for some piece of mind?'
We're comin from a pure power source.

Yeah service is great. Just got my brand spanking new Evo replacement just this week as well hardware version 004 retail package. Man this 004 built is noticeably better than my launch day 003.

I was at O'Charley's. Bad part is I left it at one of the round tables up in the bar area while I went to the bathroom. I had my brother and a friend with me and they never saw it leave the table. I don't know how. I came back from the bathroom and it was gone. It is MY fault for leaving it sit on the table, but I thought well it's only a couple minutes and no one will steal it with these guys sitting here. They have some shady looking waiters and I would almost bet $ one of them walked by and just snagged it up without anyone noticing. Oh well that one had the 4G keys borked in it cause I used Clockwork recovery to do my first nandroid and restored to it which messed up my RSA keys. At least now I have Wimax when I travel to Columbus.

Dropped my phone in water, got a refurbed from Asurion. The replacement was defective, so I called back and requested a brand new device. The rep told me they didn't give new phones. I wan bummed out, but went ahead with another refurbed. (They were 5-7 days back ordered at the time) A week later my phone arrived and it was a brand-spankin' new EVO in the box and everything! If you ask nicely and aren't a douche, you get help.

I've had to get three new EVOs from Asurion (long story) ... all three were brand new in box. All three were also backordered, but only once did it take the full 7 days they estimated.

My brother dropped his phone in water as well, called sprint about getting it replaced, got a brand new evo in the mail the next day.

My evo has gone thru 3 repairs from sprint and still the phone is not working. Defective after the performed repairs on a defective screen. I have only had my evo for about 1 1/2 months. Called asurion and they told me that they would send me a replacement, but they cant guarantee a new device. But they did mention that the evos are in back order. So the supervisor said there is a possibility that i receive a new one. I hope i get a new one because my phone is in mint condition. If i don't i'm going to call them and give them hell. Trust.

Just got my new evo build number 0004. Way better than my old evo. I had to fight with them to get my way

My wife and I both lost our Evos boating. I filled for both at the same time. Mine said backordered and arrived brand new. Hers was a white model, in stock, and arrived a refirb. Never had an issue with Asurion and will always keep insurance!

I also lost mine while boating this past weekend. Called and was told it was on backorder and could be 7-10 days. Got an email next day that it was shipped and received it the following day. Not positive if it is brand new but it definitely looks like it. Other than having to pay for a new one after my old one took a swim, no complaints here.

I got a new one from Asurion a few weeks ago off the bat without having to ask for one. Lucky me, I guess.

just received my replacement in the mail today

had to replace my phone cause my microusb port was all jacked up, was really loose and would only charge if i had my cord wrapped up a certain way.. had many other cords lying around which conformed "yes" it was the port and not a bad cable.. so the phone came in today and i have a big smile on my face cause its only had the 2.1 update and its a rev0002 so im all smiles cause i wanted to be able to reroot it the day it came it... #justsayin
also i know there is that possibility that i could have a refurb which i really could care less.. the phone looks new without a scratch on it so that works for me.. im not one of those that cries because i paid for a new phone when there is that possibility that it isnt.. incase someone those in the whole you have a "reburbished phone dumbass" response
It should say refurbished somewhere on the phone or so I've heard if it is a refurb.
Well, the phone you sent back was used, too.
How did you manage to get sprint to mail you your replacement? I tried and the rep had the nerve to suggest I say I lost my Evo and pay the $100 deductible and then I could get a $50 credit over a hardware defect
##786# and check if it is a refurb.
got my replacement for microusb issue as well
u will know if its a refurb if u just get the phone and back case ... of hit ##766# i think it is and there is a refurb status.
Mine is, but its hardware 003 which i think has the fixed port so im happy
Good stuff... I have usb issues as well but I'm still waiting for my replacement.I could care less if it is a refurb as long as its not beat up and doesn't have the latest OTA *Crosses fingers*

i was transferred to that insurance company whoever the hell they are and they told me that i would have to be paying the 100 bucks and i basically just said why do i have to pay 100 out of my pocket if its a defect with the phone and he said i would need to talk to a sprint rep about that so i said just transfer me back cause i dont wanna pay a deductible.. so when i went back to the sprint rep luckily it was a girl so you just gotta play the koolguy role and be all nice calling them by their names and all the good stuff.. just be all flattery which as cheesy as it sounds it usually works.. so we pretty much just started talking about "sadly sprint" and the prices and how they are cheaper compared to most other carriers, ive been with them since 98 and it was kool cause she was actually the one that brought that up so the was sort of the conversation starter, i was asking who she used and she said she used to be with att but switch to sprint after she started working for them and realized how much cheaper their plans were and we just sorta went from there.. anyways when it came down to the phone i was telling her that the insurance ppl were saying that i had to pay the hundred bucks and i was like why would they charge me if i didnt damage it, and she was telling me that that its because they just assume that damage to that port is cause by abuse, so i was telling her that i had just googled "loose microusb" and the first things that come up are topics regarding the evo so i was telling her that it has to be a defect in the phone (but you say it all kool, not **** like.. just sorta keeping the conversation going) so i then was asking her if there was anyway that i could get a new phone without having to pay the deductible because i swear i treat my phones like little kittens (cheese joke) so she said that she could sent me the phone without me paying the deductible but just to know that if it was damaged from abuse they will bill my acct, and i was like "thats a deal" so she basically said okay she will send it in the mail.. its all about finding the right person and just being fractious with them.. dude, ill even be a flirt with a dude if he is feminine enough..

You dont need to play the cool guy lol. Sprint always tells me I have to get transfered to the insurance co but then I tell them wait dont transfer me I am not paying for something that isnt damaged physicly or anything like that. This phone isnt damaged this phone has a hardware defect. The insurance co handles damaged phones and sprint handles swaps on defective phones. Sprint is always trying to pass me to the insurance co lol. They try to pull a fast one all the time. They are shady *****es. Also I dont care about refurbes they always look new to me so what the heck.
i did the exact same thing due to a damaged usb port about 1.5 months ago... got a refurbed nova 002 as a replacement and its been working fine ever since
after working at a service and repair store for sprint for 2 years I'll tell you that I've seen more defective phones from the manufacturer than I have from the Refurb warehouse lol.
BUT!!! I have had to exchange up to 5 phones in a row for someone because all the Refurbs I kept exchanging were defective and then we ran out and I had to order one haha

I believe this! I went through 5 TP2's
1st new
2nd refurb
3rd refurb
4th refurb
5th New, used for 5 days then sold it on craigslist to get my EVO.
All had issues with freezing when on the charger.
I just got my replacement today also not a referb but brand new. Mine bricked when I tried to do the OTA update. It went to reboot and powered off but would not power back on no matter what. Took to a Sprint Repair Center they could not get it to boot. So it took 7 days to get my replacement but I got it. Brand new very nice. Confirmed not a referb via the ##786#.
I simple rooted it then put the Damage Control on it. Very happy!
My question is, since I found this site
https://www.eff.org/press/archives/2010/07/26
I guess its cool to have my phone rooted an send it back cause my cameras messed up, it just has a pink screen an doesn't show no pic at all. An I know I'm probably gunna have to send it back.

they can still void warranties because you rooted your phone, they just cant get the law involved.. if i send in a rooted phone they can make me pay the deductible just because, its sucks but its business! i understand where they are coming from though, there are a lot of noobs that try things like unlocking and rooting and it would be ****ty for sprint to have to take the hit for someone elses screwup
im on my 3rd evo just got it yesterday
1st one - dust under the screen - bottom left corner, it started small but then it got worse within a week.
2nd one - screen seperation and light leakage on the bottom corners.
3rd one - seems ok, so far... about dam time!
So then I would have to unroot just to a replacement. How are the replacements? An I seen something on here about the 002 an 003,I mean can u ask for the 003? What's the difference

Quality of replacement screens

I am now a member of the "I dropped my damn phone" club. Landed face down right on top of a piece of gravel.
I have searched for and found a few sources for reasonably priced digitizers/screens and have a few concerns. I've read here and a few other places that the ones we find as consumers may be rejects from HTC. Several forums mention light leaking from the lower buttons (home/menu/back/search) and response issues.
Anyone done a replacement and found these issues? If you are satisfied with the replacement, care to share your source?
Weird that you mentioned light leaks... my first Aria had small pin hole dots beside the search button and under the menu button... drove me nuts in low light areas.
As far as the replacement screen... I dropped my phone 3 weeks ago, and got a replacement in the mail the next day from ATT. The insurance is worth it.
Good luck!

What did you tell ATT? I tried calling in to get my phone replaced. The mistake I made was adding the insurance after I dropped it, so they were not able to help me out. It happened last month. I read through ATT, they will not replace the phone if you dropped it accidentally, and the cracked screen is not preventing it from functioning properly. I want to call again and say I just dropped it so I could get a replacement. Any incite on what to say?
I got sooo lucky...well, I should find out by Tuesday. I called AT&T to see about having their repair place do the screen replacement. They advised me that I had purchased insurance and all would be taken care of (relieved/surprised). They transferred me to the repair place and they said I didn't have insurance. Got transferred back to customer service they said they screwed up when the told me that I had insurance. You bet they screwed up...long story short, they confessed that they "misled and misinformed me" and that all would be taken care of. They entered the insurance purchase as of day 1 and all I have to pay is the deductable. New phone shipping overnight (no extra charge) and they don't want the old one.
I'm still going to replace the digitizer, keeping it for me, my wife shall get the new one for Christmas!
One key factor in the negotiation is that they misled me and that I was about to go buy her a new android device anyway. Their misleading and misinformation encouraged me to consider a different device from a different carrier. That is what made them "correct their mistake" and "take care of me". I got lucky. As long as the new device makes it to my door!
I just told them my phone took a fall for the worse, explained to them the digitizer still worked, and that the screen was just really shattered! The were like okay, we will get you one out today.
Wont replace it if you "accidentally" drop it? WTF?

Refurb phone???

My phone is only about 10 days old and I took it to a sprint repair store cause my voicemail wouldnt update. They didn't know what to do for it so they ordered me another phone. They just called today and said it was in and that I could pick it up. I asked if it was new or a refurb and they said it was a refurb and she also stated that mostof the time a refurb works better than a new one. Anyone have any experience with this? I just don't really want to give up my 10 day old brand new for a refurb unless it's ok. Also are the screens new cause I don't have any scratches on my phones screen now and I don't want my refurb to have any. So does any one have a refurb now that works great? Thanks for the input.
I was told the actual phone is new, but the main board in it is refurbished. Not sure if this is right or not though, just what they told me at the Sprint store. Mine is a refurb, but it works great... also, if I remember right, you can check to see if it's a refurb or not, just can't remember how.

Take it to where you bought it and tell them it is defective and you want to exchange it. Under the 30 day guarantee they should exchange it for a brand new one for free.

If this is true, then my recondition status on the refurb they gave me yesterday says "Status: NO". Total call time onthe phone is only 7m out and 11 min in. With a total of only 8 calls in and out. lol awesome
I'm on refurb epic and all I could is my phone looked, smell and to me is new. I wouldn't worry about it.
Yeah your right I guess as long as it works ok and looks new. It's just we paid so much for these phones and something is wrong with it and it's not our fault I just think we should get a new one.
I believe your 30day time period restarts each time you get a new phone. Personally I would make them exchange it for a new phone. If you wanted a refurb you would have paid refurb prices.
As for refurbs "working better than new phones", I guess this could be the case if they fixed a defective part and you have less of a chance of that part failing again.
I've had pretty good luck with refurbs. But if I had the option to get a new exchange I would do that instead.
I am wonder if they make recondition status to show NO even if it is not since that is their phone and they can make showing anything they like.

After 30 days of purchase of the original phone a refurb will be used unless one is not available. The 30 day does not start over after an exchange. Anything within 30 days would be new.

It's hit or miss on the refurbs. I'm on my 4th Epic atm. The original had the radio go bad after a month. The second one that was a refurb lasted about 60 days then the charging port went bad. The third one which looked to me to be brand new (still had all the stickers on the chrome) locked and froze in the store as soon as it synced with google. I just got the forth today, fingers crossed so far so good.

Who gets mad about having to get your first evo phone replaced by a refurb?

How many of you get pretty mad when you spent 400 to 250 on your evo and it was brand new outta the box and you babied it and then you had the light bleed or b spot effect on your screen 3 or 4 months later and when you take your phone in they swap it out calling it a new one thats a refurb kinda wish they give you a brand new one that had all the issues fixed dont you for the amount you paid for?
what do you guys think?
I buy my phones from bestbuy and use their insurance so if my phone messes up then they just replace it with brand new one. They don't use referbs. Just fyi for later buys. They also have buy back program. So basically when I upgrade next Jan they will be paying me for my next phone.

not all ways true last phone i had they never replaced it just wanted to keep sending it out and have it fixed and handing me a pos loaner
my first evo started to restart randomly, first thing the sprint rep did was do a hard reset and format the sd. I had a feeling that would not fix it and in fact the problem only got worse. When I took my EVO back the second time, they ordered me a "new" phone. The next week I was able to go pick it up. Soon as i got home i noticed 4 b-spots 3 of them are horribly distracting. Im procrastinating going back to the store cuz i am tired of the run around every time i go in. One thing that is weird to me is that i supposedly have hardware version 4. shouldnt the b spots be fixed by now on this version?

Only Novatek screens exhibit the "b spots", and H/W 0004 has been using Novatek screens along with Epson. So some unlucky 0004 owners have the crappy LCD panels.

Yes, I completely agree that it sucks getting a refurb. But the truth is, your phone is NOT NEW ANYMORE. It's 3-4 months old, making it USED. Sprint should NOT have to give you a brand new phone to replace your USED one.
That being said though, I have had a few bad refurb evo's. But, I just take it back to sprint store, or call CS. I explain that while I understand I will get a refurb, the phone should be in good physical and working condition, as my last phone was. Then they either give me another refurb, or a new model for the inconvenience.
I don't mind as long as it works and I've had no problems with mine. I too am normally nervous about refurbs, only because I've had bad - and numerous - refurb issues with electronics. But as long as it works I couldn't care less.

I don't know what planet you're from but that's never the case with Best Buy. They will ALWAYS try to repair your phones which means sending it in for 2 weeks while you get stuck with a crappy loaner for the mean time. If it is not repairable, then they'll provide you with a new unit as long as they don't have something that has been returned to them in working condition.
Sprint will at least attempt to fix your phone on the spot so you're not wasting so much time and then send you a refurb (some times new devices).
I have recently had bad experiences with Sprints refurbs but kept exchanging it until I was 100% happy (3rd try) with no questions asked.
BTW, Best Buy's insurance is $10 a month, while Sprint's is $7 (30% less). Also, BB's insurance DOES NOT cover lost/stolen phones (not even if paying $100 deductible), Sprint does.
Done...
I talked to the manager at the sprint location I did my warranty swap at and told him I only wanted a new evo. Explained my side, waiting in line on opening day, etc., etc. and he agreed. So there are other ways....even at Sprint.

Likewise..
My last replacement was a refurb with a cracked case and a weird bright spot on the screen.
I called 15 minutes after opening the box and Asurion promptly sent me a brand new one.
I wanted a brand new one too and Asurion could not guarantee it. I got a refurb and often wonder if it has been better than my original would have been. I had my original 3 weeks and cracked the screen

Refurbished Rant

Has anyone had any problems with their refurbished EVOs? So far I've had 4 in the last week and a half, and I have to go back again tomorrow for what I'm going to assume will be my 5th. The power button on my EVO broke, they sent me a refurb. That one had a broken charging port when I got it, another refurb. That one did nothing but a constant boot loop, another refurb. This one came to me with a blown earpiece speaker and an overheating problem that causes the phone to reboot.
I'm sick of spending my family dinner time every day at the Sprint store. Can I be the only one who is having these problems? It seems to me that whoever refurbishes these phones for Sprint has absolutely no quality control department whatsoever. Another (what I consider to be huge) problem is that at one point I was waiting 3 days because the refurb EVOs were on back-order. During that time I had to steal the extra phone on my account back from my mom.
I guess I really can't do much about any of this, but I did write a letter in the hopes that someone will give a damn about just how horrible these refurbished phones are when they reach the consumer. I don't have high hopes though.
It reminds me of the time I drove from Sprint store to Sprint store trying to find a replacement Treo years ago. I hit 5 different stores before I finally got one that wasn't a damaged refurb.
That's the end of my rant. If you're bored enough to have read this far... well, that sucks.
I had my launch day Evo replaced due to the broken power button issue with a refurbished unit. It has worked flawlessly since I got it about 3 weeks ago. It is hardware version 0004.
I had a similar problem to yours. The 3g radio went out on my 31 day old evo, back when i got mine on launch day. Even though I was 1 day over the 30 day exchange policy, they refused to give me a new one. I went through 6 refurbs before they finally decided to give me a new one. Each one was ridiculously bad. One wouldn't turn on. One had a bad charging and hdmi port. One had a whole section of the screen that didn't work. And the worst one, when I got it out of the box, the screen was literally in two pieces. The entire glass part was not glued to the actual phone. I immediately took it back to the store that ordered it for me, and they refused to replace it, saying that I was the one who broke it, even though I didn't even activate it yet. I had to fight with Account Services and customer support for over 2 weeks to get them to finally get me a new one. Everyone I talked to ASSURED me their refurbs were "completely normal" and "rebuilt to factory specs". I didn't know factory specs included the phone coming in two pieces.
On a side note, my girlfriend went through the same thing with Verizon with her old phone last year. It was a touch screen phone, she went through 5 refurbs until they decided to get here a new one. Same thing, every one was so bad. Three of them, the touch screen didnt work at all. One the vibrate didn't work. One would not connect to the internet. And they said the same thing, "all our refurbs are completely tested to work just like a new unit". Yeah right.
That is pretty interesting, pretty crappy of Sprint to do that to you.
However, from my experiences they have some sort of a 3 refurb rule, or it may be 4 and then they are supposed to give you a new phone. I am not sure that this is still a policy but I know I have fallen back on it a few times. Do some digging and see if you can confirm that it still is or bring it up to them at the store. If they **** you around call retention and let them know your fed up and I am more than positive they will take care of you.
Went through 2 myself in the past two weeks and when the third one came in the same way, the rep game me a NIB 004. Guess it all depends on who you speak with and how their day is going! The issue on all of these was the 'sunspot', as I call it. Had my first evo screen replaced 4 months in last year for the same thing. Good Luck!
i just got a refurb last week. i waited over a week cause they were on back order. first thing i did was root it and load cm7 on it. no problems so far.
when i had to get a refurbed moment last year it was a different story though.
My update... Sprint replaced the blown speaker. Had to go back again today because the phone kept overheating and rebooting. A nice technician named Sandi gave me a new EVO. It came with gingerbread, so no root for me. But I am so glad to be through with the broken refurbs. If I had gotten one more broken phone I think I would have had to ditch Sprint. I'm honestly very relieved.

Anyone having any problem getting refurb replacements? Backordered wise?
Seems to me like you would have saved yourself a lot of headaches if you just checked the phone before you left the store. Everytime I get a phone from Sprint, I go sit in my car for a few minutes and make sure everything is working. It's better than driving all the way home and realizing my phone is broken later. Plus if you come back in right after they give you the phone, and show them the problem, they wont be able to say that it's something you did.
