[Q] GPS "in view" not "in use" - HTC Aria General

I'm running liberated 2.2 sense. FR00......something. My GPS decided to stop locking yesterday.
Today I went outside, and ran GPS test (from appstore). It says I have 10 or 11 satellites "in view" but 0 "in use" - which is why I cannot get a lock.
Anybody know how to get the stupid thing to use the GPS that it sees??
If this is a stupid question, you can just refer me to a thread - I just couldn't find a relevant one.

Mine decided to do this too..when I was hiking in the woods (bad time for it to tweak out) I rebooted and didn't work again. I had to let it sit there searching for satellites and it finally connected after 30 min. That was on cm7 though, but same scenario

It caught signal again this evening... I have no idea why this crap happens. The gps was poor on the stock rom... CM6 it seemed good - for a while. CM7 was always crap for me - after RC4 broke the gps (i thought) I went to liberated 2.2. But even with this ROM it will randomly decide not to find gps signal. It is usually in the afternoon that this happens.

Its the government man...its all a conspiracy!
Did you try using GPS status to Reset the GPS data and Download fresh AGPS data? I do this every few days and it seems to help alot. Also, having wireless network on and the option to use wireless network to find location helps speed up the GPS lock time tremendously.

Is not only the GPS Files....

I can confirm.. that the GPS issue is not fixed only with the GPS Files from the leaked Rom. At least on my device..
I have tried both ROMS (Bionix and Twiz) and I'm never able to get a GPS fix unless I wait like 2 minutes for the first time and then I have to Open GPS Status (market app) to kind of wake up the GPS and then get a fix. I have tried several times and is always the same result... on the other hand... once I install the JI2 leaked ROM... I can get a GPS Fix in less than 20 Seconds in the first try, ALWAYS,, after that I can go to Maps and get a fix in less than 3 seconds every time. So, I'm sure that there is something else in the ROM that is fixing the GPS...
I installed the gps fix only and it was working pretty good for me where I live in Florida. However, tuesday I flew out to Ohio on business and it was pretty hit and miss there. Currently I'm in North Carolina and I can't get a flicker of a signal on the gps. Kind of disappointing after thinking it was fixed.

I honestly think the exact same thing. I applied the gps fix from the leaked j12 update and it always takes 2 min to get a lock. After I reboot my phone, I always have to wait another 2 min.
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant
I get a fix in under 5 seconds - with WiFi off. The JI2 update fixes the compass which can and will mess up Navigation like Google Nav.
To play that broken record
Sats with SNR's below 17 will 1) Not Lock & 2) will show at 0 SNR with GPSTest regardless of what the reading is below 17. This means no GPS for you under poor GPS conditions. Other phones will lock with SNR's below 17 but the fix is less accurate.
Will not lock or it will take a LONG time to lock over WiFi. Disable WiFi for best performance... (odd bug here).
My GPS would just freeze up my phone, after applying the patch not only does the GPS work but i am usually connecting to 7-8 Sats out of 10.
BTW, I asked people in the Captivate forum to list their GPS settings after a successful update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8290175&posted=1#post8290175
There's a new address for the SUPL server:
- h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gpp
Tried it and I can pick up satellites a bit quicker (subjective impression), but it doesn't really work for me.
Anyone else want to give it a shot?

On the leaked Vibrant ROM, one tester I worked with had very bad performance when changing the server values (not to the address above, which I think comes from the new Captivate firmware, but to the old values floated on the forums weeks ago). After experimenting, he seemed to get the best results simply enabling MS Based mode and leaving those server details stock.
I have come to believe there is not much sense in amateurs playing with the SUPL settings. The operators of the SUPL servers seem to have a relationship with specific carriers, and I think there is some handshaking that goes on. I would advise leaving well enough alone.

How's your GPS since the update? and other issues.

MINE SUCKS
I have been using the (new gps fix) and here are its issues;
When on the freeway and driving around town at twenty five miles per hour my position is one block behind my location. the navagation tells me to turn when I am way past the street I was suppose to turn on.
The GPS still loses signal constantly
The accuracy on the Google map is way off in comparison to what the GPS program says the accuracy claims. It claims 30 to 40 feet and its 300 to 500 feet on the map. You better not be walking next to a cliff in the dark
and yeah I rebooted the phone, reinstalled Google Maps, and cleared the cach, and nothing has changed
Why did I wait for the update
I no longer trust Samsung.
The phone lag is getting worse every day and I have lost the ability to go to the market unless I reboot.
The battery life sucks as well, I cant make it through a day with out recharging.
Hey but the hardware is great if it works
Unfortunately I bought this phone for the supposed functionality and this includes the GPS.
Has anybody done any testing and what are your results or issues?
Did you miss the other threadS on this?
Delete GPS data
Wipe data, reinstall from fresh flash of JFD
Disable Use Wireless Networks.
Mine sucks too. Position in Maps jumps all over the place, it's usually at the far end of the error margin, and is relatively slow getting a fix (compared to a Nexus One)
Accuracy has never been consistent (usually above 10m)
The compass is really bad too.
There were improvements with JI6, faster lock, more satellites, fixed gmt and local time, smoother compass, but still far from reliable.

Sorry heygirl, your optimism is appreciated but that solution is no more than wishful thinking.
Drive a 1000 miles and your gps is still usrless. Wait a few days, abd your gps is useless.

How do you delete GPS data?
mine is working awesome i did it last night and is working way better than before, in some places where i used to have 0 or 1 bar i now have 3 bars, the gps working without problems.
I have noticed bugginess still.
Twice now-- When turning on GPS, opening Maps, clicking the FIND MY LOCATION button.. it sits for a moment.. and then reboots my phone. brilliant, right?
Other than that, it is a bit more usable.. still not reliable like my G1 was.
When sitting still in MAPS, my blue arrow spins, jumps a millimeter, spins back... doesnt know which direction I am moving/facing.
Compass is still absolute trash.

I cannot complain about the GPS anymore. I flashed the ROM myself, formatted and repartitioned before...just to make sure. Quick GPS locks on plenty of satellites. It does seem that it works best in standalone mode on my phone.
My gps accuracy sucks (usually ~30m), but it does lock pretty quick. Subpar while driving, had me jumping around at stop lights and even lost the signal entirely for a few mins. In my opinion, not yet worthy of the title "gps." i'm on stock ji6.

My GPS seems pretty good, although it was good before the update since I used the leaked GPS fix.
The only thing I've noticed since I odin'd the official JI6 is that my battery seems to drain a bit faster than before, but I might be using it a little more than before as well, so it's hard to tell.
My only complaint is that when I turn on the navigation app it takes several minutes before the gps locks. Once that happens it seems fine.
The same is true of my Garmin standalone gps, so maybe I'm expecting too much.
Hey in case anyone is interested, GPS is working great on the Bionix 1.8 ROMS. I get a constant viewed 11 and locked 9-10 within 3-4 seconds and the tracking is very accurate.
Thought I would share if you are rooted and want to try it out, oh and did I mention it's a great ROM

I'm using Bionix 1.8 and it will take minutes sometimes to lock and then for no apparent reason the lock will drop. Mytracks still has me driving through buildings as well. It's better but not fixed (at least on my vibrant).
mine works flawlessly. All I've done is root with Ryans OCLF and never removed any bloatware. I do have the recent JI6 update.
Working great after the update..

I don't have any of those issues.
I just tried looking for my location... and it's very accurate.
Before the update, it was off by a block, and constantly moving around.
Never put in a custom ROM or kernel.
I just MOD a few things.

I totally agree with you on this, I had stock ROM, flashed to Bionix 1.8, after the initial waiting period to grab a bird, I have since seen consistent locks (within SECONDS) using this ROM with JI2 baseband (to avoid data improvement/battery issues). It is now working in my house where it wasn't before. In particular with Wireless Networks turned off, that little satellite icon locks right quick.
Can endorse the Bionix ROMs highly enough, this thing is truly butter as advertised.
Also, this is with factory GPS settings (not supl.google.com).
Salud, happy vibrant-ing!

I upgraded yesterday through mini Keis, and locked on to 9 of 11 satellites, indoors. I tested this morning while driving to work, it was accurate, and navigation App works like a charm. Loving the layers and satellite view!
Before, I could rarely even get a GPS lock.

[Q] Would you like to help me fixing the GPS?

Hi all, i'm dealing with HD2 android nand installation since 3 days.
I've been able to have everything working like a charm except the gps... that damn thing doesn't want to work in any way.
It works correctly in winmo6.5, i tried copilot and the internal gps tool started seeing satellites each by each to end getting a fix in around 1 minute. Absolutely acceptable!
Android is a whole different story.
Gingerbread:
MDJs 2.5/2.6 it doesn't work. Tried changing libs manually, renaming, chmodding, fasterfix, changing the radios 3 times (2.15/2.14/2.12).. no way!
Froyo:
Installed a CleanDroid rom (basically a CM6.1 clean build), launched gps status and no go... wait! linked! from 0 to 6 satellites linked! is that normal?
Well, i was happy anyway... finished congifuring the rom, went out, tried again with Gmaps... searching... 5 minutes... 10 minutes... gps status says no signal.
Reboot, gps status, no signal.
Powered off the gps then on again, gps status fix in 1 minute (again, from zero to 6 satellites suddenly). Then i'm trying again now and it still acts strangely.
No go for 15 minutes, then it fixed (7 sats). Exit from GPS status, waiting 3 seconds, opening it again, 15 minutes, no fix... same exact position!
It's, in a single word, frustrating.
Currently i'm on Cleandroid Froyo rom, radio 2.15.50.04 (it came with stock HTC WM6 rom), magldr 1.2. All roms installed through CWM.
Any hint that could help me solving the only problem i get with this puppy?
Cheers.
Edit: forgot to say that i don't know if AGPS date are working correctly in GPS status, every time i try to download them it says "AGSP data will be downloaded as soon as there will be internet connection" (or something like that). It goes by it self that internet connection is alway up and running (3G or WIFI).
Updates: tried with miui and desire rom, same behaviour.
Reinstalled WINMO6.5 and tried a littlebit, it gets a fix in 1 to 2 minutes but i can see the satellites in the tool. After fix it keeps the connection.
Anyone of you can please let me know how is GPS status acting on your HD2s?
I've a nexus one too and GPS status starts showing stallites slowly, one by one untill it get a fix. The few times i got a fix on the HD2 it was suddenly, no satellites where showing before. Is it acting the same on your HD2s? I'm becmoing mad 'casue by the blueprints both HD2 and Nexus should have the same chipsets and the nexus is really really fast in getting the signal (with or without agps).
Another thing, since my HD2 is brand new (it came back from HTC for repair the 4th of jan) may it use a different GPS module? Is there any way i can check it?
Cheers.
Works fine with me,
MDJ 2.5 CM7
2.12.50 Radio
Fasterfix set to Netherlands. AGPS downloaded via GPS-Status.
Get a pretty quick fix, about 2 minutes.
Didn't change any lib, since it should work out of the box with MDJ 2.5.
Also, the first time a fix will take some time longer, so just wait till you get a fix.

Thanks but i already waited very long... 15 minutes on a balcony in the middle of an open street is too much, i didn't get a single satellite showing in this time!
The nexus gets the signal in 2 minutes without AGPS and after erasing GPS data. It also starts showing satellites after 15 seconds at worst.
The 2 uses the same rom (cm6.1 froyo) and same tools, tests were made side by side.
By the way, could you please help with my other question? Does your GPS status show satellites slowly or suddenly?
Thanks.
I have no problem with 2 hd2s, 1 running mdj 2.6 and 1 is running desire hd.
Sent from my HD2 Droid HD using XDA App
There is definitley a problem with the GPS, I have pretty much the same experience as the OP, sometimes it fixes sometimes it doesn't. When it does fix it suddenly has 6-8 satellites after finding 0 for 10 minutes.
Also some other guys reported this behaviour, it doesn't show anything untill it gets a fix. I think this is due to libgps which is probably still in development.
At least i hope! Today i gave it another try, went out in the middle of nowhere and had a 15 minute walk in around 30sqmt with gps status open and leo on my hands.
No fix...
Hope some developer may look at this and help me out understand what's wrong with my unit. Also logs say everything is working correctly... but it doesn't.
Did you try to reflash the ROM?
Also I get a pretty sudden fix of satellites, it will scan, and suddenly comes up with 5 fixed satellites of 8, it was also pretty quick this time. Less than 1 minute!
i flashed like 10 roms, some of them twice...
Some good news! It seems that using WINMO + SD Rom it works every time, it's just someway slow in locking the position and it doesn't matter if i just got lock or not.
Used Cope's gingerbread rom, first got fix with winmo, then with phone in the same position switched to andorid ad got a lock in around 5 minutes with GPS status, then i switched to Maps and got another lock in around 2 minutes. Not exactly fast but it's working at least! I don't know if it will become better with usage, i'll keep you updated.
In the meantime who was stuck as i was could give it a try.
Cheers.

How does GPS work on vibrant?

Hey.
I got vibrant not too long ago, and never really got to use the GPS. I installed custom roms but I never got more than 1-2 satellites when using gpstest app, so I thought the gps might be messed up on this phone.
Well as I got data plan, I want to use gps on data and not on satellite, so I went into the maps app, and selected the location and set go, but the pointer did not move as i was moving.......or if it did move it would move after a very long time....or might have to restart app to get it working
Someone know how to make gps work perfectly with data?
Thanks.
LOL...Went for the New Thread button before actually looking at the forum didnt you?
CORRECT Hardware GPS Fix
not sure I understand the question but the data plan doesn't change the GPS per se, unless you are going to use it for step by step navigation. I have always had a data plan......
Here is the gist of how it works.
THe Vibrant and other galaxy phones do not have true GPS but rather, GPS assist. That means it use a combination of the Sats in the air, cell tower pings and in some cases data transfer over the air. The last being for step by step instructions.
There a bunch of info in the stickies and Kwkslvr posted a mechanical fix as well
Since the KB1 modem, the GPS works very well my normal is 4-7 locks and in under 40secs so that is plenty for me. Mostly the one real issue that was not software related is the fix Kwkslvr posted. Basically, the little "u"-shaped metal tab that is supposed to push against the GPS antenna (mounted on the inner side of the plastic interior cover) does not touch or does not get good contact.
So, you open the phone bend it up to make good contact and "Voila" GPS works better. Alos, get GPS test or Ulysses Gizmo to aid checking the GPS
To make it work the Best (to answer you basic question) check all 3 boxes in the location and security, then if you need or want you can download some of the added map apps if that is your desire
Hoped that help you better understand
Hey Op, was in the same boat your in. Try out the new 2.2 Bionix-V custom rom by teamwhiskey and your gps problem will be solved. Solid, fast and stable rom that really fixes your gps problems. I too was getting maybe 2 or 3 satellites locked when I'd do the gps test, now I get about 8-10..... Bionix-V... you'll love it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
very good with bionix-v-1.2 rom
ps. I had very bad result with stock rom, only 0/3 everytime.
Flashing bionix 1.2 let me lock to 6-8/13 in less than a min everytime
I complained to tmobile constantly about my gps(among other things). After my last replacement, I wanted to call and complain again, gps was still trash. After bionix v, my gps is locking on quicker and more accurately than ever. It kind of wierds me out sometimes.
Before, on older bionix roms, gps could be great but wasn't consistent at all. I'd post here that it was great and next day it would prove me wrong. Since bionix v, I've expected the gps icon to flash forever and never lock, but every time I've used it in the past two weeks it's locked on within 15 second, and within 35 meters. I hope this doesn't jinx me.

GPS not working on 2.3 ROMs

hi.
It seems now that every 2.3 based ROM supports GPS, and people say they get a very fast lock.
But I was never able to get a lock with any ROM, I have tried several versions of MIUI and several versions of CM7.
The only ROMs I am able to use GPS in, are Froyo based.
Even there, it takes around 5 minuted to get a lock.
I did the hardware fix half a year ago, it helped very much because I was using Froyo then (it took only 5 minutes vs 15 minutes to lock) but now it doesn't lock at all.
Any solution?
Thanks.

i applied that fix and noticed no improvement, unfortunately. i had great hopes for it from reading the comments others had left about success using it.
the gps on my vibrant (running CM7) is quite odd.. it seems to 'know' where i am, but won't ever get off of the 'searching for gps' message, and of course, won't switch gears to the point where it actually tells me where to go. but if i want to look at my location on my phone and follow the 'map' it displays, or read the directions, it sort of works, in a hinky sort of way.
Try a program called GPS Aids from the market - Ive had mixed results with it.

I think that you are using the AGPS function, which uses the WiFi and mobile network to determine your location. It is much less accurate than GPS, which doesn't work.
About the GPS fix and GPS AIDS, I will try later and post the results, thanks!

that makes sense.. its just getting rough position with the mobile network.. (i usually have wifi antennae off)
last night i downloaded a gps test tool from the market... ZERO satellites... and mine worked perfectly when i was running Axura. i'll probably be going back there very soon.
