[Q] Upgrading Android ROM - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I have installed [DAF] BOYPPC-SHIFPDA GINGER V11 on to my HTC HD2, and it is great, but as the latest release is [DAF] BOYPPC-SHIFPDA GINGER V16, do I have to reinstall the whole thing, or is there a way of just upgrading?
Thanks for any help.

I use to use DAF as its connect to computer and install, but CWM is alot easier, I mean you can install it without a computer.
To install CWM is just like DAF, connect it to computer and you have do all the basic procedures like you do on DAF.
After that you go into them option list (holding power button USB flasher etc), forgot name think ita MAGDLR, then go to AD Recovery, it boots to CWM (ClockWorkMod). Oh also you have to first format your sd card and have the .zip file of the ROM first in you SD card, after that just go to flash rom sd card in the CWM by choose .zip file to flash in sd card. After that go to ROM press Call or Green button and let the magic begin .
When an update comes (I think, I just started using CWM yesterday over DAF), you just have to do the same procedure like how you flashed the ROM with SD card (the files should be called update.zip), but the difference is that you don't choose the zip to flash, there should be another option of saying flash update.zip, that is all
OMG! Took me ages to write this on my phone haha

Hi,
Check my sig....GUIDE 2.
Should be everything you need.

Your guide was very helpful thanks. I sort of knew what I was doing, coming from an IT background, but as with all new stuff, when it is something new, it is a bit daunting.
I got the HSPL bit and the Radio ROM, I got the MAGLDR part and also installed CWM, but I don't think I installed the right CWM, as per your guide, I should have used the 'Recovery for Ginger V11', when I installed V11, instead I was getting confused with Recovery Files that had the 'Copy To SD Card' directory, the more I searched, the more it got confusing, in the end I have a 1GB partition on my SD card, which I think is not doing anything.
Anyway.....
The version of CWM 'v3.0.0.5' I have on my phone, when started, comes up with 'E:Can't find misc' and if I try to do a backup, it finds the SD card, backs up root, the fails to backup recovery, 'E:failed to find "recovery" partition to mount at "/recovery" Can't mount /recovery'. I think I have the old version/old way, so..................... Can I just install 'Recovery for Ginger V16' and if so, will I lose my Android install?
Then, where does the update.zip come from? Do I rename '[CWR] BOYPPC-SHIFPDA GINGER V16 (14.Apr).zip' to Update.zip?
I really do appreciate your help with this, and your patience........... Thank you...........

Ok,let's start again.
I think you installed CWM correctly, but the net result will be:
"Note when you flash MAGLDR to your HD2 it wipes your current ROM from the HD2. So you will have a ROM less HD2 until you either flash a Android ROM or WP7 to your HD2. You can also reflash a Windows Mobile stock or custom ROM but this will remove MAGLDR from your HD2. "(as stated in the guide)
So what you need to do next is download :
Recovery for Ginger V16 and [Rom] Ginger_Sense.s_V16 \ link2.Keep recovery on desktop, put ROM zip on root of SD card.
Restart phone, hold power button on when it vibrates.
When you're in MAGLDR go to 5 USB flasher, press left phone button.when it says USB...plug in USB cable. When it says USB...USB press DAF in recovery folder on your desktop.Follow instructions.
Restart phone, hold power button on when it vibrates.
When you're in MAGLDR go to 8 AD recovery.Take out cable.press left phone button.go to wipe data, cache partition and dalvik(in advanced).Wipe each one in turn.To go back use right power button.
Then go to install from zip.navigate to [Rom] Ginger_Sense.s_V16 .Install then reboot.
For future updates you can use same method, but use update from zip...
Hope that covers it.

Just wanted to say thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated. I haven't done it yet due to Laptop issues, but once that is fixed, I shall be playing.......
Sometimes there is so much information on here you can easily get lost and a bit confused.
Thanks.....

Having a bit of an issue with NAND HD2

Hey guys, I just tried to do the whole NAND android thing on my HD2, but I've hit a snag, I flashed the radio, installed HSPL 2.08 and that Mag thing (the thing with the 12 menu options) and Clockworkmod with 150mb partition and they work all fine, In this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948&page=147
I got up to:
3. FLASHING A CWM (CLOCKWORK MOD) ROM
1. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
2. In the Clockwork Mod main menu select 'wipe data/factory reset' and then 'Yes' on the next screen
3. When the data wipe is complete, select 'install zip from sd card' in the main menu
4. Go down to 'choose zip from sdcard' and select
5. Scroll down to your CWM Rom (which you should have copied to the Root of your Storage Card) and select it
6. Select 'Yes' from the options and wait until you get a message saying 'Install from sdcard complete
Note: You can repeat steps 3-5 if you have more zips to install such as gps data or screen mods
7. Once finished press the 'Back' button to get to the previous menu screen
8. Select 'reboot system now' to restart your phone and your Android Rom should boot
9. Once Android has booted and you have gone through the setup screens, LONG PRESS the 'End' button and select reboot to reboot your phone to avoid possible FC (Force Close) problems
NOTE: The first boot of your Rom will take alot longer than subsequent boots so leave it and give it time (15 minutes max)

I did the installer through CWM, it asks me to reboot the phone, then it comes up with NAND failed or something, takes me back to the magDLR folder with the 12 selectable things (with tetris which doesnt work)?
I tried installing it a few times, same issue.
I'm trying to install this ROM:

Any help would be greatly appreciated, unfortunately at the moment I'm stuck with a phone with no OS lol.

Can I just put this on my SD card and install it through the CWM I have on my phone at the moment?
Or do I have to completely wipe my device again and start from scratch?
best would be to clear it all the way to prevent any problems
dont worry your radio looks good and the clear and restart is pretty quick
but if you really wanna save time try it through cm first maybe ill work correctly
Thanks mate that one seems to work, but now I've got this flashy X thing on my screen, is that supposed ot happen?
UPDATE:
Yay its working, awesome. I just installed it through clockwork mod, had no issues.
Is there some sort of task manager I can see to terminate programs in this version of Android?
I've got PSX4Droid on it now, I'm trying to play Metal Gear Solid but she's a bit laggy, stuttering sound and slow frame rate.
Anyone else had this issue?
there is task killer on the market
try chainfire might help

[Q] some newb questions about rom's

heya,
I recently bought a HTC HD2 and it already had a custom rom on it "TyphooN CyanogenMod 7" tho I do like it I would love to try some other roms also
tho I don't know where to start with putting a new rom on it.. and most guides I find start from 0 while I already have a rom on it..
another question would be: people that make rom often do updates. how do we upgade it? alway's start from zero again or is it possible to just update and keep everything?
Turn on holding power till black menu (magldr appears)
Choose 'ad recovery' to start cwm
Choose 'backup/restore' then 'backup' (can skip this if just playing with different roms)
Then, again in cwm choose 'wipe data/factory reset' to empty the user partitions,
Choose 'flash zip from SD card's and 'choose zip from sd', (assuming you already put the rom onto the SD card of course)
That's it.
For an upgrade it's the same, except you do the backup, then once the rom has installed and booted to the 'tap to begin' screen, you reboot into cwm, 'backup/restore' then advanced and selectively restore the sd-ext and data partitions to restore your apps and data.
This restore sometimes works across different roms, sometimes doesn't.
If the rom you want to try uses a different partition size, then at the magldr menu choose USB flasher and flash the correct size cwm partition layout.
thx already some difficult therms for a newb like me but I'll give it a try
is there a difrence in the way to work for ROM-ZIP and NAND? cuz I want a good rom with Sense and most of those are NAND.
that procedure is all about nand, nothing to do with sd android, , but cwm (clockwork mod, cwr, whatever u wanna call it) flashes roms from a zip placed on the sd card.
hmm no chance you or anyone know a good rom that is finished?
also going to use the phone for work and so.. so need a verry stable and finished rom does that exist?
Give this rom a try, it has HTC Sense, which is very different from the ADW Launcher included in CM7 roms, it is made by an experienced rom chef, and should be very stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733649
hmm gonna give that Energy Rom a try since it looks nice and schould be stable so I just folow these steps?

Magdlr is the thing you installed on your phone which permits you to install different roms on it. You boot into the magdlr menu by holding the power button upon boot until you see that menu. To do the things the poster above mentioned, you have to go to "8. AD Recovery"
most stable rom i've used so far is the original MIUI rom: http://en.miui.com/ (latest update is very, very fast too! )
Energy™ -.¸¸.·´¯ Sense 3.0 Official Desire HD [Hieros]
The new version of this rom are great fast and stable thx to NRG for this great work!!!!!!!!!
But i have one Problem. If i push the personalize button starts the internet and not the personalize surface. Now the question is it the problem from my phone or the rom?????
Cheers

HTC HD2 Stuck on Android bootscreen.

Hi,
I've got an HTC HD2 here, with Android installed on it. (NAND, I believe.)
It was bought second-hand with Android pre-installed.
Because it was still linked to the google account of the previous owner, I had to restore the whole phone to factory settings. Since that didn't work, I've just decided to install another Rom.
After some messing around, I managed to install Clockworkrecovery. (It wouldn't boot for some mysterious reason) And then I installed an Android Rom. (Energy™ -.¸¸.·´¯ Sense 3.5 Runnymede)
After some time, the phone rebooted and got stuck on the Android boot screen.
I tried to install another Rom, but now they all get stuck on the boot screen. (I have tried another Runnymede rom, and RCMix3D)
Does anybody know how I can fix this?
I wiped my Dalvik Cache, I wiped my Cache partition, I wiped my data/factory reset. I am using the MAGLDR as boot thingie, but that's working perfectly.
I have formatted my SD-card with G-Parted, on my Ubuntu-PC. (First partition FAT32-750MB, Second partition EXT3 - 1GB and a Linux-Swap of 100MB)
For some strange reason, ClockworkRecovery cannot format my SD-card. (Well, it says it can, but as soon as I stick the card in my PC, the PC tells me it's corrupted. (Windows XP on my Father's PC tells me it has to be formatted, on my Ubuntu it doesn't show up as mountable)
Thank you in advance
P.S. I don't mind losing data, there's no personal data on it. Any solution (which doesn't involve buying a new phone) will do.
Quickest solution I would try is format the entire card to fat32, and see if your pc detects it. Once it does, put the rom on it, put in in the phone, boot into clockwork format data/cache/dalvik install the rom then reboot and see if it goes past the bootscreen (keep in mind first boot takes a while, but if it takes more than 2-3 minutes theres still a problem.
Do you know what partition layout of clockwork you installed by any chance? Some roms require specific layouts in order to work correctly.
Thank you for your reply.
Unfortanetly, that didn't work.
I have installed Clockworkmod like they say on jayceooi dot com. (I cannot past links yet, but here's the step-by-step guide:
Step by Step Guide
Power on your phone and don’t let go power button.
DFT MAGLDR Bootloader will be loaded.
Use volume down button to go down to 5. USB Flasher.
Then press call button to load USB Flasher mode.
Connect USB cable from PC to phone.
You should see Wait USB…USB.
At PC, right click on DAF.exe and select ‘Run as administrator’.
Click ‘Yes’ if User Access Control prompt up.
Follow onscreen instructions to install.
Phone will be rebooted after installation finished.
DFT MAGLDR Bootloader will be loaded then.
Disconnect USB cable from phone.
Use volume down button to go down to 8. AD Recovery.
Then press call button.
ClockworkMod Recovery will be loaded then.
That’s all.)
I used the 150MB-Partition one.
Didnt work how? Does the pc detect the sd card now after you formatted?
The directions you posted are right, so maybe try a different partition layout. The roms that you said you tried use different layouts than what you have and that may be a problem. Test a CM7 rom and see if it will boot, they tend to have less problems and are overall more stable than sense roms.
I recommend Typhoons rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
Try to install it and see if it boots. It uses the same partiton layout that you have now. If it boots, thats indication that you may need a different layout if you want to run a sense rom.
Well, I could re-format my sd-card and re-partition it, but it (Android) still got stock at the boot screen.
Using the Typhoon rom, I got the same problem. The Rom appears to be succesfully installed, but it didn't really boot.
I now tried to installed Windows Phone 7, this works fine. (I don't want to install WP7 however, I want to install android)
I tried the following too: (Post by a3r0n1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18868874&postcount=14
/
At the "Using "HD2 Toolkit" select "Magldr repartition" Make sure that you are using the recommended partition size for your rom!" part, I got an error that the file was too big when I tried to choose a partition of 300MB, I honestly have no idea what the partition size should be. (I want a sense-rom, I don't have a clear preference which)
I did install the Clockworkmod with 400MB with succes now.
However, still got the same problem. Android seems to get in a loop somewhere in the boot screen
EDIT:
I noticed that the Micro-SD card always corrupts after CWM installs the Android-Rom.
I think that may be the core of the issue here.
Does anybody know how I can install Android without CWM?
Are u repartitioning the phone? That might be the problem. Hope this helps
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I manager to install an old Desire-based rom with Android 2.2 through a daf installation.
This one works fine but I still would like to install a Rom with Android 2.3 via a more regular way.
One problem I'm facing with this Rom is a very limited amount of internal storage. (about 55MB)
And I've got a big battery leak, the battery drains very fast. Much faster than my Desire HD. (The HTC HD2 we're talking about isn't mine, It's my mother's)
So does anyone know how I can install a regular Rom (preferably runnymede based) without CWM? Or does anyone know how I can resolve my problem?
@akaruna: I do not know how to partition the phone, I believe I didn't do that. Should I? I did partition the SD card. (CWM made unreadable cards for some obscure reasons, so I partitioned the SD card using gparted on Ubuntu)
Thanks in Advanced
Sjoerd
If you have limited internal storage then the main problem is the partition table is not correct. This is also why the roms you install are stuck on the bootscreen. When you install roms that require a bigger partition table than what you already have on your phone they will be stuck in a bootloop.
Go and download the HD2 NAND TOOLKIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1090783
Check out the video to familiarize yourself with the features, then repartition your MAGLDR with the correct partition table that the rom you want requires. Go into clockwork and install rom from zip.
Yes the tool kit is the best.
Yea the toolkit works wonders. Even though I still do it the original way ;p I do everything faster that way for some reason
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Oh and yes, always read the thread from that certain Tom so that way u know exactly what partition table/size to use. Usually linked also.
Sent from my Nexus One??? (HD2) using XDA App
I tried it again with this rom: "[18Dec 2011] [CMR] Sensation xl Sense3.5/2.3.5 v2.7 BETA OC & marc1706 0.1.3 kernel" (I believe I'm still not allowed to post links)
I used the NAND toolkit this time for the System Partition Size.
The only thing I actually did was clicking 350MB as System Partition Size and then I clicked repartition. And then I followed the on-screen instructions, which involved clicking next and after some installing some drivers everything went fine. (With the HD2 in USB-flash mode of course, it also said the job was completed succesfully)
I wasn't able to choose a bigger size for some reason, it told me the 400MB was too big.
Still the same problem, the phone gets stuck at the Android boot-screen.
Does anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance (Again, I'm not scared of losing any data, if anyone has any solution at all: I'm more than happy to hear it)
I tried another DAF rom and got the following error:
"Error Description: Size is too big.
Info: .\RSPL\RSPL.cpp (800)"
So I tried repartitioning the System Partition Size (MAGLDR) to 400Mb.
However, It gave me the exact same error.
Does anyone know has any idea? (For example, how I can change the partitions in another way)
(Partitioning it at 360MB works fine)
Not sure what it is but the DAF file I use let me partition to 445...... those sense time are heavy and if the partition isn't right it will bootloop or not

[Q] Having problems installing ClockworkMod Recovery 3.2.0.0

I hope someone can please help me with my dilemma!!!
I was having problems with my phone constantly rebooting, so I decided to start from scratch (not sure if that was a good idea).
I wiped my sd card and used HD2 Android NAND Toolkit to Wipe (Task 29) my phone. I then successfully installed HSPL 2.08, LEO_RADIO_2.15.50.14 & MAGLDR v1.13. I am trying to install ClockworkMod Recovery 3.2.0.0 but with no success. Can someone please walk me through how I can get CWM on my phone so I can install a custom Android ROM. Thank you in advance for all your help.

Thank you very much for the reply. I really appreciate it. But, I am a super noob... I need my hand held a little more through this process. I am trying to put NexusHD2_IceCreamSandwich_Beta6.zip on my phone (unless you can recommend a better ROM, especially w/3D UI). I thought CWM was the recovery. Also, I noticed when I start MAGLDR v1.13, before it gets to the main menu, it says ss: kernel open failed. Is that important?
I know it's tedious and annoying, but I need step by step instructions on how to resolve this.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! And have a wonderful holiday season!!!
I would probably use a rom that is not in beta as there is still some work to be done to it. I think the camera is still in the process of being fixed. If you want a rom that is running well for daily use I would try a gingerbread rom. The ics rom is a great rom and once everything is working it will be great for daily use.
Now the error is most likely because it is looking for the boot section of your android which you need to install. Make sure the rom you want is on sdcard and then install it via CWM which is accessed through magldr. In magldr menu go to ad recovery then to install zip from sdcard then choose zip and finally go down to the rom on your sd card and select it.
Oh to move up and down on the menu use the volume buttons and to select the option press the call button

Thank you very much, my friend. I was using NexusHD2 Gingerbread v2.3.5 previously and it worked fine until it kept rebooting. I'll give this method a try and see what happens. Have a wonderful holiday season and thanks again.

Problems with loading Clockwork mod and roms

Hello xda members i want to install an android rom on my hd2, as after i got the screen fixed it lost the rom I had installed and yhen i could not install new ones.. So followed instructions below and got stuck on the second paragraph
Connect the device to the USB port
Put the device into factory flash mode by booting it while pressing "volume down"
Install HSPL using the "Install HSPL" function inside HD2ToolKit - MAGLDR: Android / WP7 supports 2.08 ONLY!

Okay the problem is CWR (i downloaded the 150mb version as thought that will work with the rom) It will not install properly and I can not load the CWR menu up. 8. 'AD recovery' states in red "No sources".
Another error message I got is when I first start my phone I get this "Nand Kernal open failed"
Please help me I need to get this fixed as the phone is a present for someone.
Did you use the repartition option in the toolkit or you downloaded a separate package?
Use the option in the tool, and make sure you select the sizes according to the ROM you want to install.
Of course the device would say nand kernel failure, there is nothing in the device. After installing the recovery you need to flash a ROM, obviously.

Thanks for getting back to me,
This is the rom i tried to install but any rom will be fine to be honest!
[17.DEC.2012║ROM] myMIUI 15 B5 [MAGLDR/CLK║Dorimanx║GB║myMIUI IDE©║zipA║MultiLang]
So i did a wipe 29 again, the radio is Radio-Leo-2.15.50.14 and i googled it to download,
just to make sure the repartition was done from the HD2 tool, all stages complete and repartitioned to rom specs 200mb and 5mb cache, so repartition from HD2 tool installs cwmod then?
8. AD Recovery - still stuck saying gogogo..
Which radio do you have installed?

Radio-Leo-2.15.50.14 I dont know if your supposed to see the radio show up on one of the screens in magldr or hspl? but i've not seen anything that shows the radio loaded other than "success" after the initial installation.
It was installed through HD2 toolkit after extracting the two files to desktop.
Also I downloaded the radio from file sharing website after I googled it as the links on xda were no longer working.
thanks,
Well, I am sorry but I am no expert in MAGLDR. All I know is that the infamous Stuck @ GOx3 had been fixed in MAGLDR v1.13.
If you already have v1.13, I am at the limit of my knowledge, sorry.
You could try to re-install though.

Okay mate thanks for your help anyway it was nice of you to take the time to try to help me .
I hope someone else on these forums will help me, I guess i can still go back to the old windows 6.5. I read someone else had similar problem and ended up going back to 6.5. It's a shame because i was giving the phone as a present and wanted it in good working order with android or at least the new windows mobile system..
Maybe the old methods of installing android on the SD card without magldr would work, I would need to find the posts with guides for that as it was such a long time ago when I went through those instructions I really cant remember.
repartition again, if it not work, try this way

do this...depending on the recommended recovery size (typically 5-150-5 for non sense versions) download a recovery from here ..then restart you phone...go into magldr...go to flasher...once the usb is linked to pc run daf.exe from the recovery (extracted folder)...u will then have recovery installed

that's all I can help
You know, you could hit the thanks button for Marvlesz
Anyway, I can't see where you're going wrong here. All your steps are (as far as I can see) perfectly fine. Just to double check, you have:
HSPL 2.08
Radio 2.15.50.14
MAGLDR 1.13
CWM (from the Toolkit)
right? If so, everything should theoretically work correctly. Try downloading an older CWM version such as the one from the guide in my sig and flashing that instead.
Thankyou tried that tin1203 and I found the 250mb and 400mb (old version) but couldn't download the 150mb version..Links dead
Still stuck on 8.AD recovery.
However instead of being stuck on gogogo, AD recovery simply stated "No Boot sources"
Anything else I can try? Or know a guide to at least get the phone back to working in some form? Cheers

Yep HSPL 2.08 installed
Now how would i check the Radio? Install it again and receive confirmation once installed? Or is there another way to check?
MAGLDR 1.13 is installed
CWM from the toolkit will not load up - when installing it everything appears to work and install fine ( no errors etc) However 8. Ad recovery will not load up.
Anything else i can do to at least get the phone operational.
To check the radio, turn your phone off then on again. While it's booting up (on the first splashscreen) three lines of text will appear. The top one is something like R: 2.15.50.14 (or whatever radio you have, obviously) so try checking that line and making sure that it's a .50 radio. If it is, then everything worked fine when you flashed the radio. Also try the CWM version from the guide in my sig, it's supposed to be one of the most stable versions I think.
Hey i think i know what your problem is and since it's a present i hope that will work...there are two types of recoveries...the ones flashed on nand that can be booted from 8.ad recovery...and the ones flashed on the sd that can be booted from the 3rd option of mgldr..i think is called 3.ad sd..i really hope this will help!

Thanks for the help guys, after my previous post I decided to try installing windows 7 and all went well in terms of flashing the rom however although it appears to have loaded I have no touch screen, its completely not working
This could be due to windows 7 software or when it got fixed as I not used the touch screen since..
Oyeah thanks for helping, just need to get someone to fix the touch screen i guess.
It would be better for you if you install cwr from toolkit, just select the partition size(magldr repartition) for eg. 150 like you want and you'll get cwr v5.0.2.6.. Those recoveries that you're downloading from guide suck, didn't work for me too(ok, they worked but I couldn't flash anything even if I downloaded the 400 one).. Recommended.
EDIT: Sorry, haven't seen the second page of the thread where you already mentioned that cwr from toolkit won't boot.
