[Q] Stock Android News/Weather widget/app on Sense? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to get the stock news/weather app/widget on the MT4G's stock sense? You know, the stock android one that has top stories and weather? I can't use the cute flip clock widget for weather anymore - it looks cool, but I like to have a more detailed weather report than just high/low temp. The stock weather has more info and a great UI, plus I'd like to save screen space and use it for my news also.
Anyway, any way to get it?

Those widgets are built on the sense framework. You must be using a ROM that is Sense based to get it.

I'm running a ROM with stock Sense, but I can't figure out which widget you're missing.

I believe you are talking about the genie widget, its the google news/weather app. I have it on my stock t-mo rom, pulled it from cm6 and just installed it like any other app.

@TeeJay: sorry I missed your post, but yes I'm talking about the one that sleepyfu is talking about.
So you can just install it like a regular app? Lol I don't know why I thought that couldn't be done...I'll try to find the apk, thanks.

Lol, hilarity ensues. Do you just like start a new account every few days? Thanks for the helpful post.

Er... The OP asked if it is possible to get stock Android widgets on a phone using Sense ROM. Most answers seem to focus on the completely opposite issue: "You can't run Sense widgets under stock Android ROM". Why? Does anyone actually read the questions these days?

Yes we read. even someone with a Sense ROM said "I don't know what widget you are talking about".... so it must be something different that what Sense has....
i wish we were all perfect like you.
And yes you can run AOSP .apk's on Sense's framework.
To the OP here it is; if you are talking about the one in my attached picture....you can download it from here.

I have Fancy Widget version 1.3 that I believe they pulled because it looked too much like HTC sense flip clock and weather widget...it's flippin' identical (pun intended). Look for Fancy Widget version 1.3 apk and that will get your clock and weather widget...when you click on the weather it brings up a 4 day forecast and gives you the option to bring your browser to your favorite weather website...wouldn't leave home without it!

HTC News Widget Missing?

One of the let downs is that the HTC News Widget that is present in the Desire rom is missing on our incredible. I've pulled it from the rom and attempted to install it but it simply will not work. Once we get root it should be as simple as pushing the app. Has anyone had any success getting it installed?
I have installed the News Genie widget that we used on the Moto Droid.
Here is the actual news widget taken from the Desire I believe.

Yeah I was able to pull it. Just no way to install it right now sadly.
I used that one we used on the Droid, like spotmark posted. It is the same thing, just not with the semi-transparent widget.
At least we have that until someone "makes" a themed one.
The one that I posted is the naked one. No framework.

Not sure what "naked" means, but that is the normal "unskinned" one (it isn't tranparent or translucent or anything).

The Inc has this widget already. If you are looking to theme the widget (or theme in general), you can now root the Inc and do all that.
EDIT: sorry, you asked exactly that ... lol ... I misread your post. I cannot delete this post though, so I guess I'll leave it.

p.s. i have the stock rom with root
You can Get the news and weather widget here. It the same apk from the nexus one and has been tested and works with no flaws on the incredible.
http://www.wjddesigns.com/2010/05/15/htc-incredible-goes-retro-nexus-one-launcher-and-apps/
1)Scroll to the bottom of the page, and download "Genie Widget".
2) Place the downloaded file on your SD Card.
3)Use "Astro" file manager or another file explorer to find and install the app.
4) you can apply the widget by long pressing the home screen and selecting the "News and Weather widget"
5) Enjoy your new Widget!!!!
Any thanks would be much appreciated and PM me for any Questions!!!!!!

Sense widgets without using sense?

I love several of the sense widgets. Is it possible to get them working on launcherpro or adw? Just curious. Thanks for the help.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
As far as I know the widgets hook into the Sense UI, but if they don't it seems like it wouldn't be hard to hack them to work with something like LauncherPro.
I don't believe modifying the Sense widgets to work with another launcher is even a legal procedure.

For starters this is not a Sense widget this is a widget skinned to look like the HTC Sense clock widget. Secondly Beautiful Widgets did this first and also got a cease and desist letter from HTC much like these guys did. This is not a HTC widget that has been ported for use on a different launcher like the guy in the previous post has asked. So your response to mine is null and void due to the fact that it has nothing to do with the topic at hand or my statement. I never said that someone couldn't design widgets to look like the HTC Sense widgets I said the widgets themselves apparently can't be ported for use on other launchers. Thank you and try again

pure music widget is a skin for our music player. I use it with launcher pro. That way when you play music it still will let you skip songs from the lock screen.

For those that don't want Sense

So the best android build so far is defintely is the Stone series w/ Sense IMO. But if you don't want the Sense home screen just install Launcher Pro from the market. Then disable Sense, click the menu (windows) button, choose Applications, choose manage application, find Sense and clear defaults. Click the home button and you will be prompted to choose a launcher, select Launcher Pro. Done.
You still have the HTC keyboard and dialer, which is what I prefer, you cannot use HTC widgets, but lose the HTC Launcher. Best of both worlds for myself.
yeah...

is there a way to install a sense build and change the apps loader to something like launcher pro and at the same time use the widgets such as friendstream and news fro htc sense?

Getting Sense UI Widgets on Nexus One, Like Bookmarks

Hey guys. I'm wondering if it's possible to get some of the very nice looking HTC Sense Widgets on our Stock, or Vanilla 2.2 Phones. I have a N1 running CM6.1 Nightly and I'd love some Sense UI Widgets.
Yes I have Beautiful Widgets, and that is nice. But I'm looking for stuff like there Bookmarks Widget, and there Calls or Call Log, and the People Widget, or things like those. Is this possible? I love the bookmarks widget on Sense, that is one of the main things I want. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Impossible to get the actual widgets on stock android...however you can download LauncherPro and pay for the plus features and it comes with a slew of sense style widgets (resizable too so IMO better)
and for ADW Launcher there are free and paid widgets u can download from the market which work well with it.
I wonder why we can't extract the widgets from Sense.. that sucks.
and I've never gave Launcher Pro an honest try, so maybe I should check it out. but ADW is integrated into CM6. I've looked on the market. There doesn't seem to be any good Bookmark Widgets out so that might be a no go. But thanks!
the launcher pro plus is the way to go...yes it isn't free but it is well worth it. LauncherPro itself doesn't support widgets, the paid version does though it is available thru the app and not thru the market.
just the extra's. I'll be looking into it now I guess. Thanks!

For every post on the forum someone will respond "USE THE SEARCH FEATURE, THATS BEEN ASKED ALREADY" - I think that was the point of his question as it was worded, "...can u lead me to" - not to mention the person who types that response almost never includes the helpful link to the question being asked - I ask "why is that?" Comeon helpful forum community be helpful - for the record I've only once used the search feature n found what I was looking for - this is way too much information to be sorted this old way - SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO A NIGHTLY BUILD FOR THIS FORUM
I use the Twitter, Facebook and Calendar widgets in Launcher Pro Plus and they're great.

This is because HTC widgets rely on large chunks of HTC framework, "melted" among AOSP code. The way to go would be to backport some of it back into AOSP, AND largely modify the widgets to make them not rely as much on Sense. Highly impractical.
If I recall correctly, adding HTC widgets was tried by people online on ADW on HTC phones, and it wouldn't work because you cannot use them outside of the HTC Sense launcher.
For the call log, get the last call widget. Tapping the left will open up the whole call log, and on the right you can make a direct call back.
For the people widget, give picture dial a try.
picture dial is the way to go...

Launcher Pro
I'm running completely stock and Launcher Pro is the best all in one solution I've found. I paid for the full version have not regretted it. There are several very useful Sense-like widgets (Bookmarks, Calendar, Facebook, Twitter, Friends [which is all your social networking feeds in one], Messaging, People [which is your contacts]). It also allows your homescreens to rotate to landscape, gives you a customizable and scrollable dock. I also find that it scrolls much more smoothly than the stock launcher.
Well worth the purchase price.
Dialer one is almost an exact replica of the sense dialer FWIW and free.

That's a pretty blunt way of saying things. You telling me you can prove he stole the code from htc and htc is taking so damn long to pull a cease and desist?
And he's currently rewriting the code from scratch so it should be a different beast altogether in the next version.

Cease and desist between two countries with loose IP laws? That's a waste of time.
Look at his earlier .apks you'll find HTC assets in the res folder that have nothing to do with the launcher at those points. *oops*

Sense Alternatives

I don't know if ICS or JB with Sense will ever come to the DHD. But the reason I have never stuck with another ROM other than Android Revolution HD is because I end up missing Sense.
When people do change to a non-Sense ROM (haha, nonsense), what are you using for:
Friendstream alternative. With FS, I get both my twitter and FB feeds in one convenient widget. And I like how when a tweet has a link, if I click on the tweet, I can read the tweet and link all within FS. I don't get that with Android Pro Widget or Launcher Pro widget.
Calendar. The HTC calendar is so clean looking. I like the monthly view on a whole screen.
SMS. I know there are alternatives but many look so cartoony, not the clean interface of the HTC version.
But probably Friendstream is the big one. What are people doing?
Thanks.

Also, I forgot to mention a key app. Mail. The mail interface on Sense is nice and clean. On some of these other apps, like K-9, it's not as nice looking. Also, I need features like auto-BCC all emails. And what I like about Sense Mail is I have two mail accounts, one Yahoo, one POP, and both homescreen icons actually tell me how many new mails there are. What's the mail app everyone is using when they switch away from Sense?

Yup - FS is hard to do without. However... check out APW widgets. The pro version has a friendstream widget which is a perfect replacement. The non-pro you have to have separate twitter and facebook. The calendar widget is also the best sense replacement I have found.
I'd stick with sense, but have a DZ so sense eats up too much RAM.
What I miss most in non-Sense roms is actually the camera. I tried and bought several other camera apps (360 camera, Zoom FX), but none seem as fast or polished as the Sense camera app. Especially with regard to focussing. It autofocusses on faces or otherwise just in the center, but you can always overrule it with tap-to-focus. I haven't found this in any other camera (yet?)
perhaps its just that I have become accustomed to that camera app.
for me, that is the only app that keeps dragging me back to sense roms.

Miui has nice style and good cam, too and runs like a kitten on crack :cyclops:
Even though,in my opinion, Miui is no competition to latest ics/jellybean vanilla feeling.
I like Sense for Calendar, Mail, and (mosttly) intuitive dialler. Maybe except mail, no replacements. Therefore, Sense ROMs.
Every time I try switching I keep coming back. The simple Email icons for my two email addresses, it shows the number of NEW messages. I tried Kaiten Mail and the ugly mail icon (looks like a fire hydrant), shows UNREAD messages. The problem with Unread messages is that for my POP email address, I read on my computer, or my phone. So my POP email on my phone is basically all Unread. So the icon shows me 99 Unread all the time. Useless. I just want to see NEW messages, and that's what my simple Sense 3.5 does. Sense is just better.
For Friendstream, if I click a tweet with a link to an article, the article opens up in Friendstream. With other apps like Android Pro Widgets, you have to click the link to the article and open up your browser. Grrrrrr.
