[Q] Debranding the Arc - Xperia Arc General

First of all, please accept my apology for this post - I've tried my best to read up on this, and read all the threads available, but I'm still totally confused... which is why I'm asking.
I've got the Arc from Orange in the UK, so it's full of all sorts of software that I'm never going to use - in addition to blocking the ability to use WiFi tethering (which is very annoying).
So I've come here looking for help, and from what I can tell, I need to debrand the phone, back to the stock SE rom, to get rid of it all... the problem is, as I said above, I'm just really confused as to how to do it.
I'm not too interested in rooting the phone, or gaining access to the bootloader - as I don't know what they do - I just want to get rid of the orange software (and get WiFi tethering working).
Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Thank you

Here is a little guide:
1. Download FlashTool (I used the latest Beta) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
2. Download Arc ROM from: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9IRV888N
3. Open the folder you extracted FlashTool to and place the ROM (Arc_1.0_SE_StockROM_Decrypted.ftf) in the "firmware" folder.
4. Open "X10FlashTool.exe" and click the FLASH button.
5. The Arc firmware you put in the "firmware" folder should show up and be selected. Click OK.
6. Now just follow the onscreen instructions and it will do the rest for you.
Notes: Because I had never done this before I took out my SDcard in case it did something to that (I doubt it does). My battery was fully charged. It also took ages to turn on after flashing it but I think it's because I was watching it thinking I had messed something up haha. Also I actually created the firmware file from the .sin files in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993900 but thought uploading the .ftf would make things easier.
Hope this helps.

Hi, thank you for your reply, I'll be giving that a go at lunchtime. Who was your phone branded with? And have you had any problems with it since?
I really hope I don't end up bricking my phone, because that would make me very sad

Hi, I've just finished flashing the phone (you're right, it does take a very long time for it to load up), and so far as I can tell, it's working just fine.
The best part of this whole thing is that now I'm able to share my data connection with my iPad via WiFi - so very happy about that.
Thank you for the instructions, it made it very easy to follow and understand

Sorry if someone else already asked this, but after flashing the phone will we still be able to update via SEUS?

I had the Three firmware so there wasn't really much difference apart from a load of crap games and the bootup screen.
Don't see why we would't be able to update using the SE software anymore.

Very much doubt it, as your not touching the the bootloader,
also you are installing SE firmware not custom so it should be ok,
i dont want orange bloatware, so iv done it, and its faster.

is it the .184 version that youve got now?
im considering it but im not sure t-mobile actually have any bloatware and I cant find any details of any differences between the two version :/

@diggedy
I originally had a t-mobile version, and the only difference is the Top Apps program, and the default browser homepage.
I noticed a lot of battery use by the TMOSync application (>20%!!). Returned it and upgraded via Carphone Warehouse to get an unlocked model.

Ive not seent his TMOSync application in my usage. Is it not something youve signed up for on the t-mobile website?

No, not signed up for anything. I didn't spend too long investigating, as I returned the phone to get an unlocked one.
Looks like there are other people with the same issue though T-Mobile Forum: Xperia Arc - poor battery life

Although while your Arc is un-branded your warranty is void.
However.
When you use Sony Ericsson update service you reinstall the software, in affect your phone is flashed to the original branded software. So no, as long as you re-flash your phone using SEUS if you send for repair you will be fine.

Anybody who tried debranding their phones, how much free space do you have after debranding? is the UI any faster than previous? Also is there any disadvantage of debranding? Thanks.

I had 280mb after unbranding. It seems about the same speed. Too early to comment on anything long term.
disadvantages are it may void warranty... but this isnt confirmed.

I have some questions.
- Is the rom is multilanguage?
- Is it possible to return to a branded rom, for a sav? One person said it was possible with SEUS, can anyone confirm?
- Is it still possible to get the updates after debranding?

Hey there, trying to flash but it doesnt recognize my phone any suggestions?
What drivers do i use?
Never mind, got it... installed the SEUS witch had the drivers includet...

Can someone help me?
I need to brand my arc because of changeing with another arc.
I must send it back to my shop.
I need a Firmware with TMobile branding (germany)
I had debranded my arc with the tutorial in the forum. (i flashed global customized .181)

Completely baffled

Hi,
I've just got this phone today, and have been reading through some posts gathering the mods I wanted for the phone (Xperia tweak, vista battery guage etc.).
Having realised that I needed to update my phone I tried using Sony's updater, which seems to be failing! So went on to investigate about downloading the rom and firmware update.
However, I am completely confused on A) how to install all of these mods I have downloaded
B) How to JUST update the firmware. I am worried if I update the ROM all my vodafone settings will dissappear, which means no internet etc. Is there anyway to just update the firmware without using sony's software?
Again, I am completely confused after reading countless threads in here. Just looking to be pointed in the right direction
many thanks,

When trying to update with SEUS it takes me about 2 or 3 tries to get it to run correctly and find the correct update.

Just connect your phone with your pc and copy cabs to your phone. Go with File Explorer or Total Commander to cabs and click, easy as cake..

Your vodafone settings will be installed through connection setup after updating/installing new ROM automatically (most of the time). So no need to worry about that.
You will loose contacts, sms, e-mail, etc, etc when flashing to a new ROM and there is nothing you can do. Except not to flash a new ROM at all. Only the stuff on your SD card will remain, phone memory is completely whiped when updated.
Just find a nice back-up program suiting your needs...
Thanks very much . Applications are installing nicely!
The update is still getting stuck in the identification bit, sometimes it doesn't even come up! Is it worthit to just update the phone manually? If so, do you just put the img on the phone, or sync it to the phone?
yeah you should think about using an custom rom...
they are faster, more beautiful and the whole X1 Xperience is better
but if u want to have warranty u have to flash back ur device to a stock rom
there are good tutorials about flashing an rom...
look at the stickys
Weird
Strangely I just connected my xperia to my Vista x64 Ultimate desktop without thinking and it updated perfect first time. I didn't do anything extra.

Before trying to update without using SEUS please read the sticky's in the Xperia ROM section of this forum, it is most definitely going to save you (and probably us here at the forum) a lot of frustration.
I got a few links which you can read in given order:

How to reflash/rebrand ?

Hey guys i have successfully rooted my phone however i had an awesome app that let me check how much of my phone account i was using (Optus) and is wondering how to revert back to that firmware i used SEUS to grab two files ones 112MB and the other is 16MB i have followed the method to change the files in blob_fs but when i repair my phone it deletes the files i put in and starts downloading the new firmware again is they any way to restore my phone to Optus's factory default? Thanks for the input
This is the complete way of how to rebrand your phone with the new SEUS
http://www.xperiax10.net/2010/04/14/debrand-your-xperia-x10-tutorial/
Basically, the different is that you copies the two files, just after SEUS finished with the downloads and before the installation happening. Having the windows explorer overwrite confirmation dialog waiting while SUES downloading and hit OK before installation can do the trick. No need to actually waiting the download finished, and do the copy paste, overwrite then confirm.
I'm now also wondering about the SEUS next update that will prevent all debranding method to work, as now it just a matter for them add checking for the checksum of the file downloaded and the actual file before flashing, then we are toast, we cannot debrand anymore.
I've been looking around in this forum with no luck of make it happend, about how to decrypt our own branded ROM which most of us have them in back up, just for precaution in case that we need to use our original branded ROM for whatever reason such as warranty claiming.
Would be nice to see that we always have all decrypted branded ROM for flashtools up to the latest, in case we need them. then no worry about rooting, customizing, because you can always revert back (now i'm worried to root )
All you need to do is find what website the account app linked to. I had the same problem with my Telstra phone after root. But I bookmarked the Telstra site and added the bookmark to my home screen. Now the only difference is the icon.

[GUIDE] How to rescue our bricked phone

Some people seem to have trouble with looking for info, so here it is, in noob friendly, convenient way.
There are basically four ways to restore our phone to usability, and usage somewhat depends upon how heavily is your system damaged
1. xRecovery
If our phone does not load the system (so we're stuck at SE logo on boot) and we have xRecovery, we can flash the last working backup. This is as clear as it can be, provided that you need to know something already to install xRecovery.
For those who don't know what it is: it's a boothack, which allows to backup and restore all the data stored on phone memory, install custom zips and do other cunning stuff
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878426 - here's how to install it, enjoy.
2. Flashtool
Flashtool is a software developed for Xperia X10, with later added functionality for our precious X8.
It comes in handy when two things happen: we cannot, for whatever reason, enter xRecovery and we don't want to/cannot use SEUS or PCC.
How to use?
1. Download latest version from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
2. Download ROM image, whichever you prefer:
X8 Shakira E15i_2.1.1.A.0.6_generic.ftf
X8_1.6_clear.ftf
X8_2.0.2_China.ftf
SE x8_2.1_rus.ftf
3. Download the baseband if you want to flash it (custom ROMs like miniCM or CM7 require baseband ending with "15" in order for app2sd to work):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976538
4. Place ftf file in /firmwares directory of your flashtool.
5. Install drivers from /drivers directory (if your antivirus doesn't like them, disable the antivirus )
6. Prepare yourself - plug the USB cable to the computer (NOT TO THE DEVICE YET) and launch flasher.
7. Click "flash", choose your ROM from the list, wait for instructions.
8. When the instruction pops up, press and hold "back" button on your X8 and plug the cable into it. Keep holding untill you see that flashing of files has begun, then you may release it.
9. Flashing will take a while, you may observe the progress on a bottom bar. When it's finished you will be asked to plug off your device and reboot it.
10. Tadam! It's functional again! Clean installation which you may screw up again
11. If you wish to change baseband, clean firmware directory in flashtool and place baseband ftf file in it, then go through flashing procedure again.
3. SEUS/PCC flashing
Most probably the most prototipical way to deal with it. PCC is PC Companion, soft that you obtain on your SD card along with your device, or you can download from SE website: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/pccompanion/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
Once downloaded and installed, launch it. Most probably it will download some updates. Then choose device updating and follow the instructions. As for flashing - the procedure with holidng back button is the same as with flashtool.
As PCC is heavy and buggy, we are presented with an alternative - SEUS, the Sony Ericsson Update Service. You may download it here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup.../detailed/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
Once installed and launched, SEUS will start looking for updates. Let it take its time. After a while you will be presented with a board full of phones. Choose your Xperia from the list and continue. You will be asked to flash your phone, analogically as in flashtool in point 2. After flashing is done, SEUS will download the latest SE ROM available for your device and flash it.
ATTENTION
Flashtool, PCC and SEUS will cause loss of data such as contacts, stored messages, installed apps and so on. Anything that exists in phone memory will be erased.
Flashing a backup in xRecovery will cause similar data loss. However, it is possible to flash only system or only data backup in xRecovery. Some ROMs (like miniCM) are updated by update.zip which erases only /system folder, leaving personal data and installed apps intact.
However, you need to be able to enter xRecovery mode in order to use it, SEUS and flashtool do not require enabling the phone. PCC requires the phone to be turned on first in order to recognize it correctly, so it's more update-oriented.
Hope someone will benefit. If you see any mistakes, in spelling, grammar or content, let me know and I will correct it!
haha nice post...
i guess you bricked your phone too much today lol...and decided to write a guide...
really cool.
That is correct, and it took me some time to assamble all the things I needed, especially that SEUS was crashing on update And I really see nothing wrong in making threads that contain all the necessary info in one place, as long as it's mistakes free and helps anyone I've seen similar threads on polish android boards and they help a lot, both people who need such help and board stuff, who don't need to close/combine/delete multiple threads concerning the very same issue.
This is very helpful.. thanks Man..
Do i have to flash the baseband before the ROM?

Nope, you flash ROM first, then then you may change baseband. I'll add this info to the first post

Okay thanks, but is it safe when changing the baseband? I read from the other thread about somekind of lost signal issue?
Sorry i'm a little bit noob about this stuff.
If you open the thread with basebands and the online directory with basebands and kernels you will see that there are files for E15 mobile phone divided into two kinds - E15i and E15a. i is for Europe, a is for USA. If you flash wrong files - 3G won't work.
Or at least that's how I understand that issue

[Q] New to Rooting, not sure where to start, Xperia X10

Okay, so, I have the Xperia X10 on AT&T (yeah, mistake #1 I know... blargh, wont' make that one again). Being that I'm in the US, I'm assuming it's the X10a, correct? (if not, I would like to know how exactly I check).
That said and done - where do I start with the rooting process? This 1.6 firmware is killing my phone (and me) and I'm sick of AT&T pushing the 2.1 update back as they cripple it with their "necessary" updates... I read the reference guide, but the rooting steps therein seemed to be more for European X10i's, which I heard cross-rooting causes some issues.
I really don't know quite where to start and would appreciate a gentle (or not so gentle) shove in the right direction

Okay, so:
Model X10a
Firmware 1.6
Baseband 1.1.32
Kernel [email protected] #2
Build R2CA016
... okay, now I feel really dumb as I'm not really sure where to go from here - I was looking at reading the Guide to Rooting and getting newer Firmware, except that it's an invalid link
Truth be told, all I REALLY care about is getting 2.1 on the bloody thing because the memory leak in 1.6 (as well as the other random slowdowns) are just annoying. I'm not sure atm how far I'll really go with this whole rooting thing - the more I look at it the more I realize that, without someone to really talk me through it the first time, I'm totally in over my head.
EDIT - atm, I'm following this guide: [FLASHTOOL GUIDE] HOW TO for n00bie... that gonna get it done?
Ninja-Edit - okay, woo, got it on 2.1! Now... is it worth re-flashing to the x10Generic w/ multi touch one?

when that completes you can install Xrecovery (after rooting of course) and explore the many ROMS on this site
BTW book mark the link below. it's got plenty of tutorials and goodies.

What exactly are the ROM's for? Just alternative OS's? Won't AT&T boot me off their network for that?
Yes they are alternative OS's.
I do not think that a network provider would terminate your service if you flashed another OS.
I've also heard that AT&T does not have 2.1 so you have to flash the generic version using flashtool?
I'm also on at&t, you can do what i did a long time ago. Go to the development section and scroll down till you doing the flash tool thread. Flashtool BETA 0.2.9.1, post by Androxyde i think. Its about 20-30 threads down. Read the instructions, download the x10a generic firmware, flash it using flash tool, root it with flash tool.
Rooting can be a pain, what i did... From launcher, press the menu button, settings, applications, then development. Check the usb debugging and stay awake options. keep the setting page for the usb debugging open while the phone is plugged to the computer. Try to root and if it doesn't work the first few times, wait till it restarts the root process. Then when then installation gets to the first pause/delay (i think its when its trying the rage install), uncheck the usb debugging then recheck it and click yes on the confirmation, quickly before root process continues. If you fail, try again until you get it. Won't do any harm if you miss it. Once rooted, install xrecovery and from there you can try other roms.

No AT&T won't terminate your service. I've been switching back & forth between custom roms since day 1 that I had both of my x10s 6 moths ago.
And yes, I don't think AT&T will ever have 2.1 which was additional motivation to try custom roms.

Wow really? All that just to root? Since v0.2.3 of the flashtool (can't remember exactly since I've switched at least 5 times) all I did was enable USB debugging, press root on the flashtool, let it reboot and presto. Phone is rooted.

[Q] 2.3.3 OTA update Rogers not showing?

Hi there,
Using an unlocked Play from Rogers (Fido sim), read a few posts that update was to come July 1st in Canada... I'm not seeing one. Can someone confirm updating this way? I'm pretty sure I could update thru Pc companion but I've rooted the phone and would like to keep it this way, again read somewhere that only using OTA update would allow to keep root, is that right?

Why wait for the rogers update? When you know the next update is gonna be slow. Just flash the UK(works on your play) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090 and you will always get the updates first and root as well
I'm on rogers and I still don't have the update yet. I tried doing the check for update. Still nothing.
If you install the software on your desktop and check for an update you will find it. Every time I plug my phone in it says there is an update but I don't want to update it yet.
The software I am talking about is the one where when you plug in the phone on the phones screen it says would you like to install software to the computer blah blah blah.
I was the one that emailed Sony E and they said July first. I think Rogers messed it up and we can only update through the PC. I’m going to use the UK if I can get it to work. They say it’s 3 steps but each of those steps are many steps. For instance it says “Add ftf firmwares files in the firmwares folder” I have no idea where the Firmwares folder is and it doesn’t say. I will do some research and do it. I have all my stuff on the SD at the moment and it said it will format. Does this mean I have to start over? Will it remove my contacts? LOL my contacts took me a long time to setup.
Flashing it to generic uk firmware is a really easy. Just backup your own contacts to gmail... I didn't know how to do it but all my contacts are on my sim card anyways.

Download the latest flashtools and unzip the flashtools to your desktop, in the folder you unziped it to there is the firmware folder. Just put the files from the ".184 UK firmware".zip into the firmware folder and then open flash tools and flash. When i did it, it didnt wipe my sd card just my phone apps e.t.c but it took 5 mins to reinstall them/re-setup after using ota to update to 2.3.3 and keep root
or see here for a quick guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10879528&postcount=3
I will back them up but Gmail puts everyone that emailed me in the list and it sucks. I email people to buy stuff but wouldn't want them in my contacts.
Thanks
I will give it a try tonight. I'm tired of waiting for Rogers.
You can grab all the rogers app off the market afterwards? The only one I kept was the my account one. You'll notice that the bootup becomes crazy fast, compared to the rogers stock.
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
yes you can. Search for Rogers and they all come up. My account is the first one.
I posted this in the other 2.3.3 thread. thought it was relevent here.
i hate reposted normally . but yeah ..
Just updated to 2.3.3 here in Alberta... did it through the PC companion.. took not to long. the initial boot after update seemed to take forever.. roughly 8 minutes.
After everything booted up, i restarted the phone again .. and already noticed the boot time was alot faster.. faster than 2.3.2 for sure..
I was getting the same thing where the OTA update said the phone version was current .. but the PC companion found a new version and the install was easy as pie.
Dont notice anything else differant really. other than the boot time... hopefully ill notice the battery life increase everyones talking about..
** and maybe its just me . but my predictive text in messaging seems slightly diffearnt ? i dont know how . it just does.. maybe its just me.

Bought a Rogers phone, using it on Fido as well. Updated through PC Companion with no issues.
