Getting hang-ups on boot animation when I flash theme's - Desire Themes and Apps

Hi,
Asked this question earlier in the development forum. I think it was str355 and Yorzua who tried to help me out, but to no joy.
I'm looking at the right theme's, I've got CM7 RC4, with the radio in my sig, but I can't flash theme's with getting hang-aps on the boot animation. Regardless of theme, circle mods etc, it hangs and I have to battery pull because it won't respond.
I'm using bravo-boot to partition the tables. Regardless of which way round, full-wipe, bravo boot and backup, all I get are hang ups.
What is causing this? How can flash theme's and make them work?
Any replies, appreciated.

download the attached test theme for CM7 RC4 (just a battery change using cm7 rc4 framework from UOT).
- boot into android at least once
- reboot into recovery
- flash the test.zip
- reboot
does this file also make your phone bootloop?

Yeah, flashed that and I get hangup on 'Why so serious' s-off picture.

does it boot without your SD card in the phone after you've flashed that test theme? rule out any SD card problems (fat, ext etc..)
if that doesnt make any difference i'd do this:-
- flash whatever partition table you're going to use
- flash a permanent recovery (rule out your old recovery)
- wipe everything
- install the latest CM 7-final rom (dont make any changes, no scripts etc..)
- nandroid backup
- try installing a theme made for CM7-final
Edit: noticed in the s-off thread people are having this problem. Flashing themes that worked before s-off don't work after, might be worth looking there if it still doesn't work

Go from 1 custom theme to another

I've read and found that we need to wipe and reflash the rom first then apply another theme. So I wonder why we can't just go directly from one custom theme to another ???
I have a rooted MT3G with cm 4.0.4 rom, cyanogen 1.4 recovery, and a Hero theme. I've also downloaded a few other themes (for cm 4.0.4 of course) and I'd like to know if I could just copy those themes to the root of my sd card and boot in recovery mode and Alt+A to flash each rom to try to see which I like best? ...
OR I would have to reflash cm 4.0.4 rom first then apply a theme and follow this 2-step procedure for each theme I wanna try?
thanks in advance, your help is very appreciated.
I would also like to know. I am so tired of wiping and having to reinstall everything when something goes wrong when flashing other themes.
The easiest way I think to test themes is to create a stock 4.0.4 nandorid backup, then flash the theme you want to try. After that if you want to try another, restore the backup and flash again with another theme.
Someone else might say switch rom might work better, but I don't have any experience with that tool yet.

By what you said "having to reinstall everything..." I assumed that you meant you had to reinstall all your programs and apps and stuff, right? If so, you don't have to face that hassle if you had apps2sd. That's what I have with the cm 4.0.4 rom, when something does go wrong with that theme, I only have to wipe, reflash the rom, then apply theme. That's still a 3-step procedure vs only one step of flashing the theme if we're able to do that. So get a rom with apps2sd or install apps2sd with your current rom, and you won't have to resinstall every single app everytime.
I've wiped the phones like a million times already lol-to test different roms, if I had to resinstall every app every time I wiped, I'd have gone crazy by now.
Thanks, I really didn't even realize being an advantage for having apps2sd. I need to install it, but being somewhat of a noob, every time I look at partitioning my sd I get so overwhelmed that I abort in fear that I would do something to mess up my sd or phone.

I'm a newbie in this android world as well and I'm a bussiness major who knows nothing about programming and C language. I was just like you the first time I take the look at the instructions to partition the card, but it's quite simple once you get the hang of it. Just follow every step and read every step and do it slowly, and you'll be fine. It took me about 25 mins the first time I partitioned a card, and it went down to less than 10 mins the second time. give it a try, you'll do fine.
I was wondering this earlier... so ijust tried it, and it works, there is no need to wipe, i have flashed three diff themes running cyan 4.1.11.1 and no problem so far, so just try it, at worst, it will hang and you wipe then flash as normal lol
no need to wipe if going between themes. just always make a backup first in case the theme you use has bugs in it. you can just flash the rom again, no need to wipe. or just flash the default theme template.
next, just make sure you choose the right theme for your rom. for example do not do 4.0.4 theme on a 4.11.1 rom.
for switching between themes, the best thing to do is revert to the default theme first, then apply the updated theme. the reason is, each theme modify different files, it's not always the same. so if you apply a new theme on top of and old custom them, you may have weird theme problems as some aspects of the old theme may show up on the new theme haha.
the easiest thing to do, since most themes now contain stericsons lockscreen and some have htc music, is to reflash the rom, then flash the theme. that is what i always do.
the reason you need to flash the rom or theme template first is that say theme1 has x.apk themed but theme2 doesn't have x.apk themed and leaves x.apk out of their package altogether, then when you flash theme2 over theme1 the themed version of x.apk from theme1 will still show up in theme2. now in some areas this may not be a problem, but that also applies to anything that is in theme1 and not in theme2, so it is best to flash the theme template (or the rom if you are coming from stericson's lockscreen to a the old lockscreen (which humorously enough is still by stericson) so that it will overwrite all of the new lockscreen files).

[Q] [Boot Loop] UOT Gives me a Boot Loop with LeeDroid 2.2f

first off, i don`t know whether i have to put this on Q/A section or here.. but since it`s ONLY related to Themes and UOT i put it here (Smartass, eh? xD )
Main Topic:
Each time i try to cook a theme at UOT and i flash it to my LeeDroid 2.2f i get a Boot Loop for some reason....
i did Nandroid Backup/Restore for more than 5 times in 2 days just because no matter what i do with the theme from UOT i still get a Boot Loop.
I REALLY REALLY want those awesome stuff at UOT, so i decided to go for another (last) try today, if it failed i`d go suicide
i cooked a theme (PERFECT ONE = with EVERYTHING even Windows animations) i tried to flash it. it actually was flashed (like always) but when i rebooted the Desire it didn`t stick on a Boot Loop (it booted up perfectly) BUT nothing of the UI was changed .... all remained same as the original UI of LeeDroid 2.2f
So what`s the deal why can`t i use UOT?
P.S. i tried cooking the UOT LeeDroid 2.2f Framework-res.apk : 3 Times
i tried cooking the LeeDroid 2.2f EXTRACTED Framework-res.apk : 3 Times
NONE worked...

why new thread?
most likely problem is in your rom, not in the kitchen.
did u applyed some theme before? or it is just pure LeeDroid rom?
As I stated before - test your rom (do not wipe anything):
1. choose "Flashable zip only", choose file from kitchen's list, flash result. it should not get any bootloop. if so - proceed.
2. choose SCB% type, choose any battery, choose file from list, flash result.
3. if steps above succeedded - cook something with battery and icons (from G section)
if after flashing u have nothing changed - it means u flashing it wrong (http://circle.glx.nl/how_to/)
do not use windows animation if u having bootloops.
and post your UOT files names if u having problems.
EDIT: at least - reflash whole rom, boot up phone, reboot in recovery, flash UOT, reboot to check everything works.
You pointed me over here from your post in my CirclesMod thread.
My version for LeeDroid 2.2f has been tried and found working.
I got to agree with mendozinas that there must be something else in play here.
EDIT: To clarify: I've made/flashed/used literally hundreds of mods based on the UOT frameworks. I have never once seen anything fail, that wasn't my own fault somehow
Do a full wipe and reinstall LeeDroid. (Personally I'd rather recommend you install something like Oxygen, but that's beside the point and if you want Sense, Leedroid appears to be the **** )
In AmonRA: Wipe > Wipe all user data + Wipe dalvik cache
In ClockworkMod: Factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik.
Never flash anything if it isn't signed or at least MD5-verified.

Just flashed 3 mods and now my phone wont load?

I just flashed the 2.1 update for trigger, the matte theme, and the accurate battery mod in clockwork. now my phone will load to the homepage for about 10 seconds and then go back into the loading animation (the one you get wen you turn on your phone) and it keeps doing this. what should i do? i already tried restarting.
If you'd saved a nandroid backup you could restore from clockwork recovery. Might have to have a close personal conversation with Odin3 if not.

ok so i was able to get into clr and then i did a factory reset. i reinstalled the original trigger 2.0.1 rom with nothing else. i do want to be able to install the 2.1 trigger and the accurate battery mod. this time what should i do differently?

Well it sounds you flashed all of them together. What I would do is just flash the 2.1 ROM, rebbot and let it sit for about 10min. Then I would flash each mod individually, rebooting after each flash

you cant flash a battery mod and a theme together.
You can but its not recomended, as you can see the results can leave you stuck in a boot loop.
When you flash a battery mod, it changes the entire framework-res.apk.
When you flash a theme, it does the samething, so unless they are totaly compatible you shouldnt flash both.
When you flashed the theme, you changed the framework-res.apk and then when you flashed the battery mod, it probly removed some changes made to the original framework that was changed when you flashed your theme, causing you to be stuck in a bootloop.
It was the matte theme, it's not ready for 2.1 yet.

Yeah what the above posts said... sorry guys I should be more clear on what is and isn't okay to flash for those who don't know.

this is typically indicative of an .xml-.png mismatch......if you dont have a nandroid backup, youll have to wipe and start fresh
for the future....when you are applying themeing mods (just changes to framework-res.apk) what i like to do is just use RootExplorer to backup framework-res.apk only, just in case before i mod. that way if something goes wrong, instead of having to do an entire nandroid restore (which can be time consuming if you have a lot of data, and also might be outdated depending on when you last backed up), you can just push your old, pre-modded framwork-res.apk to /system/framework through ADB, reboot...and you are good as new again, no need for nandroid

Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
Yes it's fixed indeed.
Just cook again ;-)
I'm about to give up hope on root. I think I messed something up with my lack of experience. Here's the story.
Rooted and everything went well. Installed clockwork and taboonay 2 with villian and everything was going great. Then I tried the cookbook thing on taboonay. And got a system UI failure constantly. So I decided I had made a mess of my sdcards trying to figure things out. So I was going to reset everything back to factory, to include clockwork, and start over. I used clockwork to restore things back to before I put on taboonay and villian. Then, without thinking I unrooted the tab before changing clockwork back. I moved my backups from clockwork to my computer and formatted my sd cards. Now the tab won't reroot. I tried to move my backup files back to path sdcard/clockwork/backups but clockwork says it can't find them. How do I get clockwork to find my backup files? And if I restore to a point the tab was rooted, will it again be rooted? How do I reset everything back to factory and start over?
think I figured it out. Rooted again anyway. Is there an easy way to reset everything at one time? Including recovery?
As far as I know the answer is "NO".
You may restore kernel and OS with a nand backup/retore and you can flash the recovery in tree ways : adb, zip, Acer Recovery app but not all at the same time.
First thing to do :
install the recovery
then flash kernel and rom from sdcard or you restore a nand backup.
Your clockwork backups should work if you put them back in the /clockworkmod directory of the external SD card. Did you pay attention to the directories structure ?
For Thor recovery, the path you mentioned is wrong to me.
On the external sd it should be :
/clockworkmod /backup/[date of backup]/*
The [date of backup] is like : 2011-08-26.20.00.12
(date and time)
id pay for an app that did it if anyone has any ideas.... OK. I got clockwork off. I'm going to unroot again and reset the whole thing again and start over.
I 've edited my previous post, will this help you ?
yes, very helpful. Got everything put back together, and even got the mods from taboonay cookbook working. You all are awesome. Learned more from xda in two days than two years of college. Ofcourse, that probably says something about my effort in college. Ive got another question though. Think im going tonstart a new thread for it. Ive got adfree on my tab. Every time it blocks an ad it puts the little green android picture in where the ad should be. Wouldnt it be cool if you could personalize that pocture that pops up? Is that possible?

[Telus T959D Fascinate] - Install MIUI, CM7 and More!!

Follow Steps at own Risk
MIUI or CM7 Installation:
1.) Depending on what you want to install, download either the I9000 Miui 1.11.11 Rom or the CM 7.1 Stable Rom.
2.) Download the Glitch-V13-DEV-TelusFascinate+ kernel. I chose the Medium Leakage Kernel.
3.) Move both ZIP (ROM and Kernel) files over to the Root of your Internal SD Card (USB, Bluetooth, etc)
4.) Make sure you DISABLE all Lagfixs if you have it enabled.
IMPORTANT:
Froyo 2.2.x (Not Tested):
We need to be able to boot into CWM. Easiest way to do this if you are on Froyo is to Flash the SpeedMod kernel or the Voodoo Kernel. I suggest following all steps which includes installing Darky 9.2 just to be sure. I haven't tried flashing Miui or CM7 from right from the SpeedMod CWM.
Gingerbread 2.3.x (Tested):
If you running a custom ROM that is based off Gingerbread you will be required to flash the Darky Resurrection Edition 9.2 (Froyo) via Odin. This is to insure that the proper boot loaders updated before installing MIUI or CM7. Download the Darky 9.2 package from the above URL, the ONLY files that we need from here are: Odin3 v1.3.exe, darky_odin.tar.md5 & s1_odin_20100512.pit
Follow Ficeto's Instructions below to flash Darky 9.2 and remember to backup all your stuff before starting.
-------------------------------------
5.) Next step is to get your phone into Download Mode. If you are unsure please search the forums here.
6.) Now, open ODIN and connect the phone to the computer. ODIN will say 'Added'.
7.) Tick the 'Repartition' option, and then select the following files in ODIN (from the folder you extracted the base package in):
[*]PDA: darky_odin.tar.md5
[*]PIT: s1_odin_20100512.pit
8.) Press the Start button and wait for it to finish. Once it finishes, disconnect the phone from the computer after the phone reboots.
9.) After ODIN completes procedure and the phone reboots, a screen will come on the phone with 'Android system recovery <2e>' written at the top, and the following text will be written at the bottom:
"E:Invalid command argument
--Install from package--
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
#MANUAL MODE#
-- Appling Muti CSC...
Installing Muti CSC"
Don't worry about this.
10.) From here the next step is to reboot your phone, your POWER / SELECT button will not work so you will have to pull the battery out. Once you put the battery back in and start up the phone, it should automatically boot into CWM Recovery.
-------------------------------------
11.) Next we want to do a COMPLETE WIPE (Factory), also deleting Partition Cache and the Delvik Cache.
12.) Once the phone has been cleansed, you want to make your way to the option "Select ZIP from SD Card" and select the ROM zip file located on the SD Card. Start the Installation.
NOTE: Once you start the installation, your phone will reboot part way through, then will continue the rest of the installation. The total time for this installation could take up to 10 minutes, so please be patient and do not touch the phone!
13.) DONE!! You have now successfully Flashed either Miui or CM7 on your Fascinate!.
14.) Actually, one more Step which I have ONLY tested with Miui 1.11.11:
Once you have checked a few things out, we are going to want to Flash the Glitch-V13-DEV-TelusFascinate+ kernel. So boot back into CWM Recovery and Flash it the same way you flashed the ROM.
Optional:
BASEBAND UPDATE:
I would also suggest Flashing the I9000UGJK3 Baseband or another of your liking because I had crappy cell signal with the Stock Miui Baseband. Just download it as you normally would, move the ZIP to the internal SD Card, boot into CMW recovery and flash it. Click on the Link Here and find the modem that you would like to flash.
4WAYREBOOT MOD:
I think this Mod is a MUST for anyone running Miui, it completes it!! It basically adds the additional reboot options like Recovery, Hotboot, etc. to the 'reboot' list when going to reboot the phone. Install the ZIP the same way as usual, through CWM recovery. Download the 4-Way Reboot Mod Here.
ENJOY!!!!
I will add to this post with some additional and helpful information.
Other helpful information:
- With Miui or CM7, you will want to install the ROM Manager Application. It contains a bunch of additional downloads and is a must when using Miui or CM7.
- Please do NOT USE 'ROM manager' Backup option to create a nandroid. To create a backup, boot into CWM recovery normally via ROM manager or if you have the 4-Way Reboot mod installed. Just don't use the 'Backup option' in ROM Manager
- I haven't tried Launcher Pro yet, I've actually stuck with the Stock Launcher that Miui comes with, Launcher2.apk
thanks so much! save me tinkering time
Thanks! On my to do!
EDIT - thinking about this on the way into work. Should we include a step (if the complete wipe doesn't do it) to wipe the battery stats? Could be done in CWM after flashing the ROM, or through an app like battery calibration on boot up. Also, we should note on the coming from froyo that you only need speed kernel if you do not have an option to get CWM. When I ran froyo I had a voodoo kernel so could get to CWM that way.
Also, is miui EXT4 out of the box (no need for a lagfix)? Given its next to latest GB I'm assuming it is
Just some thoughts - hoping to do this tonight, but one quick question for the group - flashing - so do you all make sure you have a full battery before you flash? I've not always done that in the past, but believe its a best practice.
NEW EDIT - almost forgot, great work as always Adam!

It definitely is good practice to Flash a new ROM when the battery is almost 100% full. Now saying that, I have flashed ROMS when my battery has been as low as 40% - 45% and never had any issues.
I think that's the best comment Adam - why apply a lagfix if one is not needed!
Cannot wait to give this a run - hoping tonight assuming my little ones all go to bed, and my wife does not get too annoyed with me
[MIUI Themes and Lock Screens]
The Miui Rom is very customizable when it comes to themes and lock screens.
The Miui 'Themes' application allows you to download, install, customize and apply all different types of themes. Which I would have to say that there are at least a good 100 + or more themes out there at the moment.
I think the best feature that the 'Themes' app has to offer is that you have the option to apply different theme components to the current base theme that you have it set to!
As an example, I currently have one of the 'Honeycomb' themes applied as my base theme, my Lockscreen is based off the 'Slide Slip' theme, my Icon Set is based off the 'Seemless Dark Blue' theme and my Dialer is also based off the 'Seemless Dark Blue' theme. It feels like the possibilities are endless now when it comes to customization.
To see the different components the way the themes are broken down, choose 'Edit Theme' from within the 'Themes' app. Within here you can then assign other theme components as long as you with have the full theme installed or just that one component.
Installation of .mtz files, (Full Themes / Theme components)
Once you have downloaded a compatible Miui theme (.mtz format), copy that file to the following directory on your phone:
/sdcard/MIUI/theme
(You can also import themes from the themes application itself, all that does it move it to that directory for you)
Then open up the 'Themes' app and your new theme will be in the list.
NOTE:
If its a theme component only (Still .mtz format) , eg. Lock Screen component, it WILL NOT show up in your main Theme list. Just click on 'Edit Theme' and it should show up under the drop down for 'Lockscreen Style'. Get what i mean?
For Miui Lockscreens, check out the link below!

For full Miui themes, check out the link below:

Also, the Theme app has an Online library that you can search through as well
Cheers!

EDIT flashing in process - factory reset at the moment
Awesome! Thanks for creating this. Just gotta wait until the weekend to take the plunge. It's not the flashing taking too long that I worry about, but the time I spend restoring apps and settings and just playing around in general. Not to mention having time to start over if I feel something went wrong. Two more days to go!
guessing it shouldn't boot loop - I'm stuck in a boot loop
looks like it cannot find the SD card - so keep restarting looking for the miui zip - the CWM error is quick before it restarts (can't see it)
EDIT : re-downloaded the zip but same effect. Anyone hit this before with cm7 or miui? trying a few things before I attempt a restore.
I get to 'checking bml' before it reboots, and then it boot loops continuously - I tried flashing and not flashing the glitch kernel first, but nothing sticks.
EDIT : giving up, attempting a restore of my nandroid I made before I started. Any tips let me know - disappointed.
EDIT : still up, backup didn't go so well - likely cause I have odd kernels - one last ditch - went right back to froyo stock, tried speedmod (bootloop), now put on 9.2, rebooting - may give it one more shot before giving up for the night.
EDIT - SON OF A ***** - that did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I might have to provide some troubleshooting tips on that one!!!!!!!!
EDIT AGAIN - knock on wood here - I'm farther than the bootloop and I'm at a MIUI splash screen - that might be as far as I go tonight ... LOL
FINAL EDIT - so not much playing tonight. Ate into that with all this trouble shooting.
SO IF YOU ARE COMING FROM A GB ROM AND GET STUCK IN A BOOTLOOP - I would go to STOCK FROYO and then flash 9.2 and then follow the instructions. Bang on job Adam! I think I just had something odd on my phone.
I'm now up - gltich on + miui.
Wow, sorry you had such a hard time man. Only time I hit a hard bootloop was when trying to install CM7 using gingerbread bootloaders. Did you eventually get it going??

yeah, see my last edits - putting on 9.2 I'm guessing didn't completely adjust the bootloaders - when I put on stock telus 2.1, THEN 9.2 - I was golden.
Didn't play much (that was after 12) but restored a few apps - but man, it is really fast. Will report some thoughts over the weekend likely.
Questions on MIUI
OK a few questions.
- downloaded google maps (navigation, etc). Start it up, but it fails miserably - bombs out and goes into a constant vibration. ANyone having similar issues with that? Suggestions?
- There's a 6 digit number in the left corner of my screen - no meaning to me - anyone know what that is or seeing something similar?
- also, pinch and zoom with the camera. Those don't seem to work - any issues you folks having with that?
- Adam you suggest a different base band - where are you getting zip - I'm only finding large tars on that link (but I"m over tired)
- The OTA updater looks great BUT is in chinese - any one have a work around for that?
Again, sorry about all the issues you had with installing and such. My very first time

OK a few questions.
- downloaded google maps (navigation, etc). Start it up, but it fails miserably - bombs out and goes into a constant vibration. ANyone having similar issues with that? Suggestions?

Weird man, I actually installed google maps a few days ago. First time I used it (Navigation) was yesterday to test out the GPS. Had no problems at all with the apps yet.

That is your Service Provider. With CM7 and Miui, I noticed it doesn't resolve the provider. Its no harm unless you don't like looking at numbers there. I did find a work around though, just install the Miui Extended Menu Mod and you can change it to what ever you want:

Pinch and Zoom? Unsure what you mean, is that just the touch-point focus? If not I haven't tested that yet.

Guess I better check my links more better. Stupid site.
For now use this one. I know your in the same geo area as me, I haven't had any issues with this one, use the one attached.
Oh, don't use the OTA updater, just use ROM Manager. Or download the Miui updater app from the market.
I'm guessing MIUI originally was developed in China, lol

OK - maybe I should reflash. I actually have ROM Mgr premium - but its telling me I need CWM installed to work (which I obviously have).
And no apologies needed - we're all guinea pigs here
EDIT - Also, on the camera - used to be able to pinch like a website on Darky's to zoom in and out. Maybe that was a custom camera but I think it was generally samsung stock.
EDIT - Reflashed (1.11.18 actually - am I the first ) and GPS issue solved - might have been tied to the modem as I flashed yours Adam (THANK YOU!!!!!!) Keeping moving forward

Might be the best thing to do. I've read that some people prefer to >> Flash the ROM first >> Flash Kernel >> Boot into Kernel CWM >> Re-Flash ROM again.
Yeah, if you do there is no need for the Darky steps anymore.
Just boot into CWM, do factory wipe, partition and dalvik cache, fix permissions, then flash miui again.
Oh, in regards to ROM Manager and CWM, just select 'Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery' >> Select I9000 (MTA) and choose version 3.
Then reboot into recovery to test.
It actually still uses the Glitch CWM from the Kernel. This is just so that ROM Manager will recognize that you have a selected CWM
Looks like Miui 1.11.18 is now out. I'm going to Flash and test it out shortly.

I'm loving Miui and the glitch kernel man. There are a few other Kernels out there that we can try as well. I maybe testing the platypus kernel out soon, it is also built for our phone too
From what I've read so far though, Glitch is one of the best so far.

when you get 1.11.18, go to ROM manager and select update ROM - does nothing happen? I have it registered now with a CWM which is fine, it shows my current version (which is latest) so when I click check for udpates nothing happens (no - 'no update available' or anything like that). Just wanted to see if it was working correctly.
