1) What do I need to do so I can restore everything exactly the way it was out of the box? Just in case I need to send it under warranty or sell it or something. I understand you can unroot. What about if I change the kernel or rom..?
2) Which rom is closest/similar to the stock mytouch 4g in terms of UI? I like sense because it has Swype and maybe it looks better but i'm comfortable with it. I also don't care too much about color themes and such cause I customize the crap out of it using launcher pro and background changer app.
3) Which kernel is best for more power, better battery life and also reliability? Does flashing a kernel mean it'll erase a rom? What about flashing a rom.. does it erase the current kernel?
4) *answered*

Thanks this helps. I looked around and installed CM7 + Faux's Gingerbread kernel just to check it out. I like gingerbread better than Froyo but I miss sense.
Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations on which Sense gingerbread Rom is the best? (reliability, power, battery life, etc.) Basically I love CM7 but the one thing that's missing is the contacts/dialer feature. The contacts do not sync with Facebook and most of my contacts are blank. When I had facebook for mytouch 4g, it would sync all my fb contacts into my address book, allow me to merge duplicates and have the newest Profile picture photos for all the contacts listed. The syncing on CM7 doesn't seem to be working. Any thoughts?
Also, I like that in Froyo (or was it just Sense) that when you click on a contact, a little menu action pop up shows "SMS", "CALL", "Facebook", etc. and it seemed like a more integrated platform. Maybe i'm just missing something like an app or a setting somewhere.

I'm with you about vanilla AOSP ROMs feeling like a lot is missing. Sense is so much better in so many ways to me...it's what Android should have been from the beginning. As far as Gingerbread/Sense ROMs, there is RoyalMint, but since we don't have a good kernel source yet, it's missing a lot of functionality and isn't totally stable. If you want Sense, I would heartily recommend the one in my sig, eViL 4G-HD. It's Froyo, but is fully functional and stable.
You can still merge FB contacts with phone contacts on cm7.
With FB installed open a contact, edit, merge.
I find that most features from sense are in AOSP but there either not automatic, or not as easily accessable.
Flashing a ROM erases the kernal, well it over writes the existing kernal with the one included with the rom. Flashing a kernal does NOT erase the ROM and it is meant to be flashed ROM the kernal.
I preferred faux's kernels myself

Yes, it is a little more time consuming but it works. With the stock MT4G ROM, all contacts were linked together automatically. I thought that was very cool.

I've had some problems getting HTC apps working in cm6 latest nightly.
I get my apks from DC froyo.
First I tried an easy install which failed.
Then I moved it to the system/app folder and chmod and chowned to make sure the permissions and owners were the same as stock.
Right now the HTC internet browser opens but force closes.
How can I get it working?
Aren't the HTC apps tied to the Sense framework? If so, I don't think it'll be possible to get them working on a non-sense ROM.
I could be completely wrong.

No you are not completely wrong. You are completely correct. Sense is deeply integrated into Android. It's not like there are just some added libraries. The source code that compiles into the framework.jar and framework-res.apk, etc are directly modified by HTC. This means Sense is no mere skin. It is a complete integration into Android. Regardless, without this framework HTC apps will only run on Sense phones. Some can be ported over but it's a difficult process so most likely the apps you want will not be ported over. Out of curiosity though, which apps are you trying to use on CM6?
If you want Sense, go back to Sense.

Use DC.
Can't use HTC apps without Sense. Please check the FAQ in the future.
if you provide the applications you're trying to run, perhaps alternatives can be suggested for you.
I personally like the HTC Tip Calulator widget....
and the HTC Notes....
But you can't use them on adw.
I don't want an app shortcut, I want a widget.
I prefer AOSP thankyou very much.
I just like the option of having some apps that I got used to.
HTC_ime for example. The keyboard.
Even though I use swype.
The camera app which pwns the stock.
Got flashlight and car panel working.
FM radio and weather would be nice too.
There were some nice Widgets but the only one I miss is the clock.
Any porting tips?

i liked the HTC keyboard as well. I'm assuming that you did your due diligence and found this did not work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7429254#post7429254
4G and FM Radio is not working in CM6 yet.
this is listed in the CM6 OP.
i'm not sure what HTC browser your talking about. perhaps try installing Dolphin HD browser.
last nights CM6 build incorporated a new camera app and deathray (er...Flashlight app w/ widget). just get the nightly build and flash over what you have...i wipe 'cache' and 'dalvik cache' ...you loose no settings.
i use 'MyWeather' but then, i don't care for weather widgets. have you even looked on the android market for this? maybe try browsing from a computer on a site like www.appbrain.com
i use digital clock widget to provide my time date...many folks praise Beautiful Widgets.

tips...
- everyone once in a while...copy a nand backup onto your pc (ie: what if you SD card gets lost or borked?)
- read the entire forum for the ROM you're playing with
- use the search function liberally. (both on xda and google)

Thanks for your post, but.
This isn't about anything specific, i simply want to know how to get apps ported, without the java source.
That said, I AM using dolphin, but I prefer the copy-paste that I can only find with HTC sense, I was hoping the browser on stock sense would help.
I've come across that thread, and use Swype without much issue, but having no trackball () makes me wish I had some arrow keys.. Not available in that thread.
Since my OP I have customized ADW and i'm quite pleased with it overall.
Now I just want to be able to use any app I wish. Regardless of alternatives!
Beautiful widgets is good, but has no analog clocks last I checked.
I do use it either way, but again, this isn't about anything specific.
I want to unlock apk's so they work anywhere. Any rom. Not just with HTC apps, but even the touchwiz apps!
Don't care about 4G, and i know that there are bugs being worked out with CM6 but i'm following it closely. On the 8/11 nightly build right now.
Finally, I read too much. I know a lot more than I put on..
Been "playing" with android roms since Dream (especially CM).
The problem which I have won't be solved by simply looking around for a version of the APK that works.
I want to know how they are being ported/unlocked .
If you can help, then thankyou very much!
Otherwise, I don't need your irrelevant tips. (No offense intended)

try Beautiful widgets, the weather clock is very customizable. costs a couple of bucks, but totally worth it if you miss the clock.
i've tried the azure, but it's almost unusable without htc's stuff (no smart dialer, facebook and twitter integration with contacts)
in my opinion azure is the best.i am getting best performance than any other rom.
i don't miss htc sense ui........i am using better widgets and some twitter and Facebook widgets i manage to get my nostalgic feeling of htc sense..........so my opinion to go for azure rom...........

Froyo offers contact-linking out of the box which basically means any app can add information to your contacts. The official Twitter and Facebook apps synchronize contacts and with 2.2 you can select which ones to link (just like with Sense on 2.1 ROMs).
If you tell me you need Sense for this then I'm quite sure you didn't even try.

Thanks Ali ba for these explanations. I can understand makaze because I also tried a froyo rom, not azure, maybe a couple of months ago and I went back really fast to myprevious rom because I missed exactly these two things, facebook contact sync and smart dialing.
Like makaze , when I saw these problems, I thought it was because the sense absence, and I didnt search a lot for a way around, they just were 2 very important issues. But if you say facebook contacts syncsworks, I wil try azure tomorro!! by the way, does anyone know how to install a smar dialer like htc's? with that it would be just perfect
I like a clean rom, what I need I can install myself, when I buy a Computer, I also format it and reinstall it without the software of the pc maker.

I have same issue such as you , no life without sense !
try zeam launcher
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/zeam-launcher_guca.html
Syncing with facebook and twitter is working fine here, lets not give out false information to anyone reading this. Facebook integration is supported fine in Azure ROM (and others)!
I am going to give it a try... I guess that if we want to have the last version of android, now and in future releases, we are gonna have to get use to live without htc sense
i've installed both facebook and twitter but haven't really noticed much of an integration (eg. people photos not downloading, unable to browse their albums directly via phone like in htc's friendfeed, see status updates when opening contact...). but then again, the biggest drawback is that there is no smartdialer and i still can't understand why an smartphone operating system does not include this by default (we're not in 2001)

Dialer one I use, is nearly the same as HTC

Hello all. I have searched and have found some info on this but not sure if I am missing anything so I wanted to ask. My scenario is basically this.
I have Myn's Warm RLS4 installed on my rooted Evo with Riptides clear froyo V9 theme flashed as well. I do not use sense as my interface at all, I use Launcher pro plus. The only thing I want to keep from sense is the dialer and the applications that allow my facebook pics and info to link to my sense contacts (Friendstream and/or Facebook for HTC sense I believe is responsible for this I believe)
Does anyone have experience in what apps I can remove safely and still keep the social integration provided Sense?
I want to freee up more space for memory and apps as well as not have things load from sense into the memory banks if I am not using them. I see a bunch of sense widgets installed that I will not use anymore so I assume I can remove those, but I am just afraid of losing the contact/social integration that sense provides.
If anyone has done this before and can offer some assistance or maybe a link that I have not found yet I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any responses!!

Just FYI, the official Facebook and Twitter apps offer contact integration/syncing. In AOSP it's the way native social integration works. It probably works best on a AOSP ROM and might not even work on a Sense ROM so YMMV.

Thanks for that info. I was not aware that I could achieve the same contact integration functionality with AOSP. I would love to use an AOSP ROM instead but none of them have functioning 4g and 4g in my area is wicked fast so I find it really hard to give up, LOL
Hello Everyone,
Im using HTC Desire with AuraxTsense 8.1.1 and ive seen a few roms with the core android contacts app. I tried using mybackup pro to back this app up and install it but it says "application not installed". Do i need to download a .zip and use recovery to install this? where could i get those files from either an .apk or a .zip.
Thanks for any help guys.
i believe the contacts is two apks contacts and contactsprovider. And you cannot get them into a sense rom by merely installing it, theres some wierd issue with it if u try to replace the senseui's contacts with it...
I know what you mean with wanting this, but if you're willing, try a different rom to see what you like at the same time? Something AOSP built. If you search there are ways to adb push the stock contact app which is what you want, but that includes the dialer which you also need if you want the contacts.
If you're willing to experiment, try a different rom. I was on AuraxTSense 8.1.1 also, but the battery drain was totally annoying. So I went to Oxygen and I haven't looked back (and has the contact app which you want). Done 18 hours on my phone today with relatively standard usage and, went down to 32%, amazing tbh.

You can try to flash the "Android_Contacts.zip" file that is found on the mini-site I built for LeeDrOiD's ROMs. I have done so in the past (flashed through recovery) and both the HTC People AND stock Android Contacts seem to co-exist in perfect harmony It simply asks you which you'd like to launch when tapping the "Phone" button for example.
Of course it would be wise to perform a Nandroid backup first just for safety's sake!
Sense should allow all that harmonies in AOSP rom too. why dont they~~
Thanks for all the replys. im gona go try that website now!! ill post how i get on.
ok tried that but just got a load of force close messages before i could even start up the app. is there any .apk on the marketplace that would do this, or even a similar app. I know you can get it on sense cause i had it on one of the sense roms that i use. I just like AuraxTsense because of the power control in the notification area.
well actually i dont understand why do you want the android dialer? Sense dialer is what people want. Well at least i want it it, want it so much but sad it cant be used on AOSP roms.
Cause i love having to click a phone app and having my dialer/contacts/recent calls all in one app and just tabbed on the top. I dont care if its the android dialer but this is the best one ive seen laid out for what i want. Is it possible to get the samsung one or a similar app?
Ricochet I totally agree on that. The standard Android dialer app is way more functional and looks nicer too IMHO. Only thing missing is T9 search. I used Dialer One from the market when I wasnt rooted, however found it to be less snappy then a standard app.

I tried that and it somewhat worked. The dialer comes up but the contacts aren't there. The favorites and call logs are populated though. I'm using an HD rom though so I'm not sure it's the same (RCmixHD)
Tust found "TouchPal Smart Dialer" in the market. The main screen is a mix of HTC with Android Contacts tabs at the top. Gonna try this out to test functionality, but the layout is awesome!
Thanks man, that app is exactly what i wanted.

Why would you want to do that? There are currently 2 choices for gingerbread on the Defy.
1. CM7 RC0 (vanilla gingerbread or at least very close to)
2. Leaked 2.3.4 with Motoblur
Just pick one.

Anyway, CM7 is used from those who wants their device free of moto stuffs.
Your question doesn't make sense
Absolutely agree with carlo93.
I am for some strange reason absolutely loving the 2.3.4 MotoBLUR interface. Am I crazy?
I too wanted motoblur on cm7 just for facebook contact sync. well guess what? When u install cm7 and sign into your google account and that google apps pops up to choose things like youtube and gmail and facebook, the facebook has contact sync!!!!!!!! HUZZAAAAH. so if thats all you need motoblur for, cm7 will have it with the facebook app.

No, you aren't!
I love that interface too, even though there are some issues i can't stand ( red arrows if you disable mobile data, ultra-bright softkeys ).
By the way, when MotoBLUR syncs facebook contacts, it pulls high-res profile pictures. When the official facebook app syncs to your contacts, it pulls really low-res profile pictures (as in CM7's case).
+1 to MotoBLUR for this nifty detail!

It gives you the Moto alarm screen, with it's 'hit anywhere to snooze' or 'swipe to dismiss'. Which is probably the one reason people (including me ) like to Moto alarm app.
The capability to locate the phone when he's lost is a good thing too with motoblur...
( locate, delete datas, ... on a lost phone )
